"I'd rather lose by a mile, because I built my own car, than win by an inch, because someone else built it for me. Your car is your story, so don't let someone esle write the book." - Moog (Budget Street Cred (Season Finale))
Awesome sentiment, but love how he was so taken with VTEC that the rivalry between that and the Miata was all that mattered. (Sorry, came into this 4 years after the fact, but it was new to me and I liked it, so don't given me any crap!)
I think its amazing that Moog took the time to hype up vtec and Honda... I drive a suzuki so don't really care but its awesome that Moog takes the time to take down stupid barriers with cars. Marty is the purist but Moog is the every man
Never has 22 minutes passed so quickly. Another excellent episode. Guys, I feel like I know you both like friends at this stage. Be proud of what you're both doing. This is car culture gold.
one recommendation i have for you guys... quit looking towards your opponent during a race. you get distracted and you get the issues you experienced. not gonna spoil, so ya. focus on your time, nothing else ^_^
I'm sure you guys are all over this. But having just done a clutch replacement on my '90 NA I wanted to share a couple things which made a world of difference. Replacing the flywheel bearing is probably a good idea, since it's a pain to get to and replace after putting it back together. Also, resurfacing and re-balancing the flywheel while you have it out is generally a good idea. My biggest recommendation is Motorcraft Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid. Part # XT-M5-QS I think. It's night and day in that transmission. So much quieter, smoother, everything. It's a bit expensive, but it's proper full synthetic stuff which will stand up to the beating of track days. Love the show, hope I've contributed something new and useful to your huge bank of knowledge! Keep it mad.
I used to have an S2000 and it's still the best car I have ever owned actually. Some cars have powerful engines, some have good handling, but the S2000 is the complete package. It has terrific handling, brakes, engine, gearbox. Everything is quality.
Having a good Honda doesn't include an old banged up Civic with a big stupid fart cannon on it, cut springs, and grey primer for a paint job. Just sayin'
jench78 Yes, sure, ummm, they are different cars in their approach and character. The star of the GSR was the engine, it had high RPM and high compression, and with a few minor engine mods was very very exciting to drive. The transmission also was much better, it would shift beautifully(mechanical linkage opposed to RSX's cable) and super quick at full RPM while RSX's struggles more like an average car gearbox. The RSX is as fast, both 0-100km in 7s, but the delivery is 'softer' and didn't really continue the acceleration past ~125km/h unlike the GSR which really wakes up at 2nd gear/ 70km/h. The RSX however, is a much nicer, prettier and more liveable(2 bikes in the back, no sweat) vehicle, however, what you gain in liveability you loose in driving excitement and pleasure. Also the RSX's VTEC is not the same, but the one in the GSR was something special, it's roared and kicked you in the butt and rewarded you substantially more the harder you drove it. You could sum it up this way, The RSX you love it everyday and it loves you back. The GSR, with that engine, chassis and some mild mods, you lust after and can't wait to hit a country road or track.
nice, man. thanks. I was shopping around for either, though I didn't really think I could afford the RSX. cards always tend to get bigger, heavier, and nicer, and that's what I thought about those two. I know the K20 has a lot of potential, but so does my b18c1. thanks again!
jench78 Oh, you got the B18C1! That is a sweet little engine, it's more exciting for sure than the K20A3. Not sure about the K20A2 or K20Z1. They really are different cars though, the RSX has been my favourite by a good margin, but it never gave me the same thrill as that B18C1 at full RPM, maybe like 70% the thrill. Also the RSX does not burble on gas liftoff as much as the GSR with as decent exhaust, but that can be fixed with Hondata. I would say stick with it for now till you can get a RSX and cash for tuning, I'm sure you can get it to a similar approximation in terms of thrill factor. Oh and a technical note, the K20A3 is not a true VTEC, if you note the cam lobes you will see that it is in detuned/efficient mode when off and regular engine power in VTEC. And it does not have differing lobes on the exhaust. Keep this in mind! The B18C1, K20A2 and K20Z1, however, are dual lobe style, regular and aggressive, intake and exhaust.
Having watched a few of your races, I've got a simple tip for you, Marty. Stop looking at your opponent and concentrate on driving, that's why you keep missing gears!
I love both of these cars. Used to have a MK1 MX-5 and currently own an AP2 S2000. They both have their perks, but the S2000 is certainly the better car. And this video is a great example of why getting a car that's fast in stock trim is a better idea than getting a not so fast one and trying to tune it. Enjoyable video.
Kudos to the MX-5 for trying. Lets not forget the Mazda, is one of the "happiest" cars to drive, and a great track tool. I would love to own one of these. But. Honda has just put every tiny bit of Knowledge they had, on that amazing masterpiece. And damn they had some knowledge...! I WILL upgrade from my Civic to an S2000 one day.
That R35 was so nice, sounded incredible! Hope you guys got some footage of it :D Sad to see Marty lose, I wanted that little MX5 to win :( VTEC does sound pretty badass when it kicks in though.
Hello MCM, I'm from Brazil and I follow your show for a long time. I would like to leave here my congratulations, because your work is very well done. Greetings from the other side of the world!

You're not lying. I remember I had a pt cruiser gt and I thought I'd never own it nor did I really think I would enjoy it. By far though one of if not my favorite car amazing and fun. Plenty of other cars I can't wait to go for and yeah

I drive a 97 prelude and i must thank you for defending us moog, and showing that not all of us are like the kids that drive crappy old civics. and did you make the credits music.
Don't listen to haters. The prelude still drives a lot better than most new tech-laden numb steering vehicles. Let fatasses behind the keyboard talk all they want. If you enjoy what you drive and feel involved in the process, then the platform and badge dont matter. I'm not a JDM guy but I respect Honda's engineering and their bulletproof vtec systems and manual gearboxes. Real automotive enthusiasts treat cars like music and find good in all genres, rather than being closed minded like moog stated in this video.
***** anyone that calls a car a turd just because of one aspect is completely hard headed. No it can't drift. but it can go fast as balls, a hell of a lot faster than a stock civic. and they are one of the best looking cars to ever come out of japan. They have just as many fans if not more than both the cars in this video. There are prelude clubs world wide just like there are for S2Ks, miatas. and supras. And next time someone says something about their own car, no matter what it is, I suggest you keep your bullshit inside your mouth. Because that might be the person to make your face look like a turd.
LoL you are hilarious. It has nothing to do with drifting it has to do with sideways motors and crappy little transmissions. Preludes aren't fast and everything is faster than a stock civic. If you think they are one of the best looking Japanese cars you haven't seen very many Japanese cars. Just because a car has clubs doesn't make it a good car. Next time you feel like making threats I suggest you do it in person, it will hold more weight that way.
My 2 year old just said chopped after round 1. I was watching with my headset so he can't have even heard it! lol My 3 year old then chimed saying chopped as well! lol
That Miata would of won all those races if it wasn't for the clutch/shifting issues or so, it appeared and to be honest, I was rooting for the Honda, I do like Vtech!! lol Now, install a LS3 engine in both of those cars and the real fun will begin, the trap speeds will be 125mph+(210KPH+)!
***** LOL, I would never buy a either of those 2 cars, it's not my style but, how can someone not like saying VTECK....It's one of the best LOL's ever made and we have been laughing because of it since the 90's! You know you like to say VTEK....say it!!!! VTEK!!! Instead of saying 1000 unicorns it should be a 1000 RAINBOW PONIES!!! VTEK!!!
I actually thought the MX5 would win because it weighs less and has considerably better torque. High-revving engines also tend to have poor torque. Looks like I was wrong.
if there was any sort of uphill incline, you would see massive difference because of torque. Also, having a passenger with Moog, would slow him a lot more than a passenger with Marty. Torque helps compensates for weight
charlay23 No. Just no. You're confusing low-end torque with top-end torque. Power is a product of torque and revs. If you have more power - provided you have accessibility to that power - and the same weight, more power will win (depending on gearing, friction due to drag, etc...) The MX5 will get off the line better due to the low end torque (and thus increased low end power) created by the turbo, but the S2000 will take it in the end because, once it is within the powerband, it has more power. The S2000 doesn't need high torque to create high power because it revs to the clappers.
Paul Optional Siegfried No, you always need torque, the reason Marty lost isn't because of the high end HP of the S2000, its the fact that he makes power in the mid range of the motors max RPM, meaning the gearing was setup for the car to rev to 7000 and instead it's reving to 5000. He's having to shift earlier than Moog into a gear lower gear ratio, in essence taking his mechanical advantage over Moog away. Say in first, Marty has 197 wtq at the top end and Moog has 150 wtq. Giving identical gear ratio's (yes, I know they aren't) at 5000 Marty shifts to 2nd and loses mechanical advantage and now has 160 wtq. Moog still in first shifts at 9000 and drops to 130 wtq, Marty just shifted to 3rd and is now at 130 wtq as well, and it carry's on from there, hence why Moog is pulling away at the half way mark. Given the same gear ratios and equal HP at top end (with as smooth a HP curve as possible), a N/A will win vs a turbo car. Now, if you change the ratios to take advantage of the turbo, it's a whole new ball game and is a reason why a lot of high powered turbo guys will actually start in 2nd over first (longer gear, as well as the fact you can actually put the power to the ground, instead of in smoke, if you aren't spinning first this would give you slower times though).
Speed Junkie To bring gear ratios into the argument is a later chapter that is not needed and not relevant in the basic concept of power and work over time. Of course it affects a car going down the track, but so does air resistance. As I said, HP is a measure of work over time, if power plant A has more horsepower than power plant B, no matter how much TQ power plant B has, A has the ability to perform more work over time (i.e. getting a car down a track in less time). Why do you think all engines (even in things like heavy machinery, aircraft, small engines) are rated in HP? TQ figures are not even published in a lot of cases. Now what really boggles my mind, is if you have a semi truck that has 400HP and 1100FT LB of TQ, and then you have a Hayabusa engine making 400Hp with 180FT LB of TQ, It can pull trailers around just like the semi!
Marty is a sore loser lol. Even if the mx5 wins, there is no honour beating a bone stock s2k. The s2k will always run lapsaround the mx5 if built equally as the mx5. If they knew the clutch was gonna be a problem, why not change it? I'm far from a jdm car fan but i felt Moog's victory and was happy for the Honda. Having driven both cars, the s2k was definitely a better all round car. Awesome race MCM and great episode. Sucks to eat that tofu !!
Kieran Whoriskey i agree on this ... a car you bought on the street or dealer that has a value of around 10-13k s2K vs a car that you can find on the street for 3000 or less... which one would you rather mod ? dont get me wrong the s2k is a beautiful car ... but with the price to get one ... ill just dump it on this Mx5..also not fair .. its like comparing a Mx5 vs a Porsche...oh wait...
Money is definitely a factor, the the actual base chassis of the car is important as well. Equally modded, I still feel the S2000 has the better platform.
MazdaBp26 There is also a depreciation value you need to consider. All the mods he has spent his money on and still counting (it is far from done). Will only increase its value a bit. Lets say he gets 6k for it when he sells it, compared to Moog getting almost the same amount he bought it for (depending on how long he owns it, etc). That means Marty did not exactly get as much "bang for the buck" as it might seem. You also need to remember that the mx-5 is not all that great in comparison, since it was not specifically design for performance like the s2k. The s2k is the superior car in straight-line, track, drivability, luxury, platform, reliability, value and is a LEGAL car. I do not know how turbo conversions work on legal part in Australia. But I am guessing it is not insured or registered as a turbo car, which means insurance might not cover him and it will not pass inspection. I'm not saying you should not mod your car, I just want to point it out because it is a common mistake to not consider this. Remember also that he has been very lucky with that mx-5. He has gotten professional help throughout the build, had parts lying around, vice versa. I am done with engine swaps and heavy modifications to cars for a while. I am looking into buying an Integra Type-R or S2000 when I have finished my cars… Both are great cars and they both seem to enjoy them, which is all that matters. Cheers
You're right mate. The s2000 would be expensive as it is a newer car. That MX5 is like what, the first gen. We got those here on Canada for like 2-3000 grand for average ones. The s2k's seem to be climbing up in value, kinda like Toyota supra's fetching like 30 grand now. I definitely agree with the money factor. Cheers !
If you don't rev your motor past 7500 every time before you shift, life is not worth living. Somebody once said "it's all about top end flow", and I think the guy was talking about life...
So a basically 25 year old MX5 was on par with a much newer S2000 worth considerably more? I'd say that was a damn good effort from the MX5! Loving your MX5 Marty!
Hondas are awesome, my mom has a 2007 Acura (Honda) MDX, she was once going to my sister's school to pick her up, on the way a Camaro tried to pass her in the freeway and my mom just pushed on the pedal to full throttle and left the Camaro in the dust.
aint no way that's half true. If it is either the Camaro doesn't bother to win or you mom's MDX is turbo to like 20 psi. Ask anyone who know cars if that's possible.
***** well if that's the case the only possible explanation is that the Camaro driver is using the 6th gear in low RPM. In normal situation I think even 4th in a Camaro is enough to smoke a MDX.
I 100% know what Moog is talking about when it comes to Honda's because I use to be a huge Honda hater until I bought my first Honda. My first was a manual 99 Integra LS which wasn't exactly what is considered a fast car with a mid 7 second 0-60 but that's pretty damn good with only 140hp. The car felt really solid and I never moded it because it felt perfect for what it was designed for from the factory. Later on I bought a 100% stock 01 Prelude with a manual of course and that was my first taste of VTEC which I really enjoyed. That car was a blast and in my opinion a DOHC VTEC Honda sounds better than any other 4 cylinder non exotic engine. To this day I really regret selling it but it drank gas like a V8 while in VTEC (which I was addicted to), it wasn't practical at all when it came to space and it drank premium fuel. Since then I got a WRX wagon which of course is faster and I now own a 2011 335i but there was something special that I miss when it came to my Honda's.
14:30 thank you Moog finally some one that instead of being like every one else(that call themselves car enthusiasts) and just hating on hondas you gave them a shot and now u see the crazy potential they have i used never thing id get into hondas considering i used to own a old 86 5.0 and like u said one day my friend let me drive his crx with gsr motor i was hooked from then on ......now i have a 96 BB1(si vtec or h22a1) probably gun put it in a del sol or a crx not sure yet just love to here that V TEC V TEC CRAKED yo
I'm not sure why Marty was surprised he lost, or that he was missing. His stock clutch was crap. Should have swapped it, before racing. Excited for next episode. Also add a lighter flywheel :)
Remember if you can not to post spoilers because some people read the comments first!
Spoiler alert: Marty and Moog have a race
LMFAO.....Got snapped reading the comments first....
thank you for posting that i was about to scroll down!
you guys should turn off comments for a bit on these suspenseful videos and then turn it back on later.
I instinctively scrolled down to read the comments and you saved me from spoiling it with this comment! Thanks :)

a big turbo and youll be around 500whp on stock internals.

Old MCM slaps just as hard as the new stuff, thanks for all the years of awesome videos boys 🔥
hks released the supercharger kit that can instantly bring your s2000 to 400hp maybe you can install that in the next video clip
One reason Honda owners get bullied is because a lot of them are idiots. And I'm saying that as a guy with an Integra.
jench78 Agreed, I've had a GS, GSR and an RSX, great cars(especially that GSR engine), but soooo many irritating fanbois in the community.

I loved the s2k pull on the last race when he hit third. I like both cars
it wasn't a pull Marty's clutch slipped.
Yea know I don't think it came across right I just meant it looked like he pulled hard
That was an great episode! I'm not even a car guy, but your entire show is great to watch
This has to be one of the better episodes. Really enjoyed it and love the new rivalry guys! Keep it up!

I was watching with my headset so he can't have even heard it! lol My 3 year old then chimed saying chopped as well! lol
*****
I had totally forgotten this! Thanks for bringing the memory back! :) :) :)
DE Nichols reminder of your awesome kids
Marty, do a 2jz swap in the mx5!!!
now thats gonna be nuts
You guys are hilarious! i cheered SO hard when Moog smoked Marty's car! (even though Marty's clutch was being weird)
This is a fun video. I had some fun races with my S back when they just came out and no one knew what they could do.
Respect to Marty and his built mx-5, but I'm so glad Moog won. Hondas get so much undeserved hate.
01:42 That Sierra is awesome.
VTEK!!!
Marty with the light-colored helmet and shirt, and Moog with the dark helmet and t shirt - genius.
Marty and Moog are the best
Why do i keep missing gears? Lmao look ahead and focus on actually shifting clean.
Marty bro... you gotta learn to shift better haha much love for both the cars tho guys!!
Next time on Mighty Honda Mods: We show you how to install a clutch!
Best excuse ever.. lol
really now....
strykrchaz
Give him a bloody auto to shut him up :P
What are the name of the songs plz ?
20:20GTR drive by. Love the sound
Where was the "Too soon, Junior"?
SWAT CAME INTO MY HOUSE! DISRESPECTED MY ENTIRE FAMILY!
***** And you know what? IT WAS YOU!
HarryzjEEE I NEVER NARCED ON NOBODY!!!!
I didn't get it at first but now I can't stop laughing
This guy Marty can't drive
Still impressive that a miata with just a couple grand in it keeps up with an s2k 20 thousand dollar car. Miatas are pretty impressive.
I love my s2K! thank you MCM for showing its glory!
man that skyline sounds amazing in the background at 20:19
It's not ar34 its a r35
I actually thought the MX5 would win because it weighs less and has considerably better torque. High-revving engines also tend to have poor torque. Looks like I was wrong.
Its HP that is a measure of work over time bud. more horsepower = faster
if there was any sort of uphill incline, you would see massive difference because of torque. Also, having a passenger with Moog, would slow him a lot more than a passenger with Marty. Torque helps compensates for weight
charlay23 No. Just no. You're confusing low-end torque with top-end torque.
Power is a product of torque and revs. If you have more power - provided you have accessibility to that power - and the same weight, more power will win (depending on gearing, friction due to drag, etc...)
The MX5 will get off the line better due to the low end torque (and thus increased low end power) created by the turbo, but the S2000 will take it in the end because, once it is within the powerband, it has more power.
Speed Junkie
To bring gear ratios into the argument is a later chapter that is not needed and not relevant in the basic concept of power and work over time.
What if you spend the equivalent money moog spent on the s2k on mods for the mx5. Thats the whole point of tuning. faster car for less money! :P
I am looking into buying an Integra Type-R or S2000 when I have finished my cars…
Both are great cars and they both seem to enjoy them, which is all that matters.
Thanks Moog for racing for me and my Honda!
cant wait for next video always wanted to watch one of those but i wanted it to be from you guys
So a basically 25 year old MX5 was on par with a much newer S2000 worth considerably more? I'd say that was a damn good effort from the MX5! Loving your MX5 Marty!
So...When does the S2000 get some turbros?
Some so like twin that's about 850 whp
Sounds like fun
marty and his excuses LOL!
That was a really awesome episode!!!
Can't wait for more!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH MOOG!
Ask anyone who know cars if that's possible.
you could clearly see the camaro driver's face al like "fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck"
***** well if that's the case the only possible explanation is that the Camaro driver is using the 6th gear in low RPM. In normal situation I think even 4th in a Camaro is enough to smoke a MDX.
With Camaro's 0-60 over 2 seconds faster than your MDX, are you sure that driver was aware of the race, or just simply going in his own pace?
OhFishyFish You could hear the engine and the shifting
Marty, that's what you get for hatin' on farting V-TEC unicorns, The Nissan Unicorn Union, and Flurpy's whole family. EAT TOFU!
Shame on the MX-5, BRZ, and FRS. S2000 all the way!
MrRangerZr1 FUCKKK YOUUUU
Oh damn my comment took 4 Year’s to load
great video - highly entertaining as always. I felt the tension.
clutch and diff = win. or get an RX-7 instead
would have been better off to keep the cressida! Next on mighty car mods the Mx-5 gets a GM v8 swap!
Fools runnin an S2000
The excitement levels in this video are just out of control
There is 1 simple answer:
Hondas FTW!!
Fucked it Marty!
The Honda S2000 looks really good with the hard top.
I would agree.
great race! awesome episode. new to the honda scene myself got a 94 integra rs thing is so fun to drive couldnt be more happier.
14:30 thank you Moog finally some one that instead of being like every one else(that call themselves car enthusiasts) and just hating on hondas you gave them a shot and now u see the crazy potential they have i used never thing id get into hondas considering i used to own a old 86 5.0 and like u said one day my friend let me drive his crx with gsr motor i was hooked from then on ......now i have a 96 BB1(si vtec or h22a1) probably gun put it in a del sol or a crx not sure yet just love to here that V TEC

Cuz V-TEC is 1000 unicorns farting.. Yolo
It's actually 1 million
k
I've got mad respect for S2Ks and NSXs, but I just can't like a Civic. FWD bores me too much.
I'm not sure why Marty was surprised he lost, or that he was missing. His stock clutch was crap. Should have swapped it, before racing. Excited for next episode. Also add a lighter flywheel :)
I really get a laugh out of this MX-5 v Honda rivalry, GREAT episode.
Don't do a burnout with street tires...
