Manny Pac is a living legend. Over a long and exciting career, Pac has thrilled and inspired countless fans with his unique, aggressive style of boxing. Along the way, he’s become the only boxer in history to earn a championship belt in 8 different weight classes.
Pacs journey as a professional fighter began at the age of 16, when he stowed himself away on board a rickety ship, looking to land his first fight. Having grown up in extreme poverty, Pac’s mother could no longer afford to feed him, and he was intent on making his way in the world as a boxer.
Pac soon grew a reputation as a ferocious Jr Flyweight, who dominated his opponents with sheer aggression and will. Despite his blazing fast speed and incredible left hand, Pacs lack of experience regularly landed him in compromising positions. It was in these instances that his true nature showed itself. Like a wounded animal, Pac was, and is to this day, most dangerous when in serious trouble. Where many would have faded or wilted under pressure, Pac has always fought fire with fire.

The Modern Martial Artist you mentioned how Pac sometimes doesn't rotate his hand when he punches to squeeze through oppo's guard. I just wanted to add that a punch like that can be slightly faster and more powerfull were it's is a much more natural movement for our bodies, also because all the force is going foreward as opposed to some muscle rotating instead. The trade off of course is it's you're less defensive were you're shoulder and elbow are lower not covering as much of that side of your head. At least that's what I've learned. Great video so far!

Also sometimes he throw his jab from side stance position which reminds me of Bruce Lee's back fist, Pacquiao is the greatest that had ever box inside a boxing ring. His accuracy and speed and power is out of this world, plus his iq too.

    • @o-wolf

Trying to copy his style is honestly a pointless fruitless endeavour.. it seems to be tailor-made for his specific physical &mental traits.. plus it's very unpredictable/unorthodox
It's ironic that Mayweather is kinda the same.. except his "Philly shell" style is a more orthodox "predictable" technique that's still impossible to master in quite the same way Floyd does without having his unique skillsets.
Two sides of the same coin which funnily enough cancel each other out

@El Guapo Hahaha. Not landing clean punches you say? I dare you watch the entire fight in slow motion and count. It doesn't seem like Mayweather is winning. The only thing there is, is that he was able to accomplish his main goal to chicken run in the ring hoping not to get any knockdowns because he knows that if it happens, he cannot rob Pacquiao and the judges will have trouble in making him winner as they were paid by him. Real talk!

    • @ICCraider
      @ICCraider 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@El Guapo It just means that defending is more costly. In Mayweather's case, the only thing that made the option of going for knockouts almost impossible is his small hands. Which broke quite a few times when he was young. Young Mayweather was really aggressive. He always went for knockouts. He stopped being aggressive because of his limitations(frail hands). If you bless Mayweather with the hands of Roberto Duran he'd be a lot more aggressive.

Manny Pacquiao is a complete boxer whose skill level may not be equaled by current and future boxers. He mastered head movements, foot work, fast combinations, freights, traps, offensive and defensive boxing skills. He is able to hit opponents moving forward or going backwards. Hit without being hit. Hit then move. He has displayed that ability numerous times. That is s testament to his skill that has lasted him over 30 years in this very physical sport. Most of his opponents have been taller., longer reach advantages, out weighed him. But his skill and ring smarts served him well. Most notable opponents have been Margarito, Cotto, de la Hoya. When he retires, his skill as a boxer will be missed. He is a ferocious boxer inside of the ring, but a nice regular guy outside of the ring. He never thought he was better than anyone else and never bad mouthed or trash talked about anybody. He just went into the ring and did his job and never harbored any bad feelings toward anyone. Good luck Manny Pacquiao and best wishes.

His awkwardness was difficult to comprehend and confuses his opponent thus makes his moves unpredictable. That's one thing common fans don't understand about his moves and that makes them all think he is just punching and throwing his fist but in reality, he has his own style and tactics that makes him land his jabs and open opponents' covers. Pacquiao has speed, power, and stamina. He is a GREAT fighter. One of the best. But his style causes him to get hit. This is how Marquez put him to sleep. And even in many of his victories, he gets nailed quite a bit. Floyd RARELY gets hit with a big shot. Floyd is like Barry Sanders, very elusive. Sanders rarely took a big hit. He'd always make a small, subtle move, at the last moment, to avoid taking that big shot.

To be fair, textbook boxing is more of a guideline that should generally work for everybody and it is good enough for you to become a boxer, but not an exceptional one. It should be the base but not the end-all-be-all and boxers should adapt their style to their own strengths like what Roach and Pacquiao did to their style (and yes, it is as much as Roach's style as Pac's). This video is a good breakdown of all the things Roach and Pac did to their style that flies in the face of conventional wisdom but works because they have something to compensate for it (e.g. speed, athleticism, and a spring-loaded calf).

Even watching Manny fight live over the years its crazy how much of his technique you can miss just because of how much of it he dishes out in the ring. The slow mo in this video does a great job of capturing not just what his fast hands are doing but just how much his footwork has been literally powering his career. Being a bit of history buff I've discovered that a lot of boxing's finer points and techniques have been underutilized or lost altogether in the last 70 odd years. Manny has made himself into a more complete package than most fighters, old school techniques like the vertical fist and the foot/weright shifting while punching (Used by Dempsey, Fitzsimmons etc), physical fitness uncommon for his age, and a mature mind inside/outside the ring. In his latest fight with Broner, Manny was able to set up a few of his classic combinations on a guy who is billed as an excellent defensive fighter in his prime. IMO whatever Broner's reasons of not throwing more punches were, Manny still showed us some of his wealth of experience and the limitations of Broner's defensive techniques.

One of the most interesting factors in fighting (and sports in general) to me is how their styles to a degree are determined by their bodies (physiologically speaking). Like for instance Pacquiao's style is a lot of bouncing around, knockout power- and he has some huge wrists for his size, as well as calves. His body physically lends itself to his fighting style. Same with Mike Tyson but his bouncing was more of a quad dominant movement to his quads were huge.

Not to mention the guy actually has brains. I didn't vote for him when he ran as president but the guy knew economics. During the debates he talked about finding ways to generate national revenue that are not tax based, about how to increase GDP, reduce bureaucracy, devolution of functions to the local government, etc.
He earned his bachelor's degree while serving as senator and received his master's in public administration later on. His ability to learn, unlearn and relearn is amazing - he's like a child always eager to learn new stuff. When he started out as a boxer people laughed at his English, not knowing he already spoke 3 languages at that time. Today he speaks straight English which despite his heavy accent is very understandable - he even spoke Spanish to latin American media. He always tries new stuff, learns new things and applies them to his life. And the dude is fucking generous, literally a saint. He sent thousands of students to college, built homes for people and launched the career of other people. A total straight A individual. Fucking legend.

My dad grew up fighting and boxing, he fought briefly in the amateurs as well. We've been fans ever since I was young, and we used to train just to stay in shape and for me to learn how to defend myself. He would always stress two things, especially when we'd put on gloves and headgear and spar: don't sleep on the jab, and angles, angles, angles. Pacquiao is one of our favorite fighters, and every time we'd watch him fight, my dad would gush over all the crazy angles he would employ to send punches coming from seemingly every direction. The guy felt like he could almost be in multiple places at once. It's something that's always stuck with me and made me appreciate fighters who use angles to their fullest effect to mix up their offense and defense, guys like prime Lomachenko. Always a treat to revisit videos like this!

1.5k likes to 5 dislikes has to be some kind of record. AMAZING content man. This is how you build new boxing/mma fans. By instilling knowledge that they then can use in spotting the great new fighters coming up in our era.
