Ok, but here's the _real_ question: who would win in a game of the Pokémon TCG? Neither knows the game, but Yugi/Atem has the advantage in knowing how card games work, but Ash knows the Pokémon better, _and_ it's canon to the anime that the types in the card game actually count (e.g. Rock-types are explicitly a sub-type of the Fighting-type, in the anime, which is why Brock was able to enter Geodude into a Fighting-type Pokémon tournament), so Ash might have an advantage there, too.
Easy win for Yugi. Knowing another card game has more skill crossover than knowing Pokemon battling, especially when the card game doesn't reflect regular battling to any degree of closeness.
@@Celestia282 yeah, but the Pokémon card game has very different rules from Duel Monsters, and watching any episode of Staple or Stinker (or other shows with the same concept) will show that knowing one card game doesn't necessarily translate to understanding a different game, an effect can be absolutely broken in one game and absolute crap in another. For one, Yugi has never dealt with type weaknesses, which Ash actually does understand, and the card game's rules _are_ designed to at least approximate battling, albeit with resource management (which Yugi doesn't have experience with, so there's no advantage to him with that) and having to draw the right cards, and Ash _is_ good at Pokémon battling, being a literal world champion. The only reason I could actually see that Atem definitely wins by default (without at least having to spend a lot of time analyzing their characters to determine exactly what deck each would build) is that he literally has bullshit anime protagonist powers that let him manipulate probability and always draw the right card. But then, Ash has insane luck that makes Joey's look bad and would probably draw all the right cards, himself, just on sheer chance, unless there's some kind of lesson he needs to learn about losing in a game he's never played.
@Rabbles the Binx Productions In my experience watching those videos, the smart people generally do well, actually, and most of the wrong guesses were cheap tricks by the host where they put in a bad or mid card that was only good due to specific meta.
Also, I completely fail to see how Ash would have an advantage for the type mechanics when weaknesses and resistances are literally printed on the cards. Also, many of the interactions in the game are complete nonsense compared to regular Pokémon due to the way the card game combines types, and that could confuse Ash. I'd say this is a wash.
While you do have a point about the resource management, Ash also has zero experience in that regard, so I don't know why you're counting this point in his favor.
Ultimately, the main reason Yugi has the advantage is that he understands general deck building philosophy and using cards that synergize well with one another. Ash would just throw together a random pile of individually strong cards while Yugi would have a functional, if basic, strategy.
Lastly, I do not at all believe that generic luck is remotely comparable to literally stacking the deck with magic. If we include the Millennium Puzzle into the equation, then Yugi wins every time, full stop.
Yugi’s King of Games moniker has never just been for Duel Monsters. Yugi (or more specifically, Atem) has the massive advantage of having an innate knowledge of card games, let alone one that Ash straight up doesn’t know.

Okay but let's be honest here:
Ash isn't always the best when it comes to being smart with type matchups. He may know about them but he also has a tendency to forget about them occasionally throughout the series and I'm sure Yugi/Atem could figure out how they work pretty quickly. Plus at least in the original I'm pretty sure that duel monsters wasn't the only game they played so they're clearly capable of learning how to play multiple games.

People forget that 4Kids Entertainment weren't the only Dubbing company during the late 90s early 2000s.
Saban and FoxKids were another dubbing company who also did Anime for the western countries.
There was also DIC during the 80s and early 90s where they would dub Anime like the original 2 seasons of Sailor Moon from the mid 90s until the latter part of Season 2 proved that even they felt like it was too much for them.
Harmony Gold was another Dubbing Company who used to do Anime Dubs for the Western Countries as far back as the 70s with Space Battleship Yamato, Voltron, Robotech and even that Little Mermaid film from Toei from the 70s.

You can call 4kids dubs bad all you want but the Pokémon dub ironically fell off for a lot of people after TPCi took over.

Surprisingly enough, the only thing these guys have in common nowadays is that their card games are stupid complicated. But even then, they're complicated in different ways. Pokémon has a lot of rules, but thankfully they do set rotations so they don't have to worry about some super obscure card from 2007 reshaping the meta. Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't do that, so they DO have to worry about obscure cards destroying everything, which means they have a lot of complicated and obscure rules and conditions for card effects.
Edit: Pat, that Charizard sucks, he's got no protection for a 2 monster cost. Just doing a raigeki is not that good, expecially when he takes two cards and isn't immune to any card effects.
Especially cuz he's a Pyro monster (get it? Cuz Charizard isn't a Dragon-type) you can't even splash him into a dragon deck that can properly power him up.
