If you’re wondering why text is gone. 4kids made their dubs with the intention of using as the basis for other dubs in other languages. Instead of changing the text to suit each language, they just removed it entirely for the sake of making it universally understood, even if the text was already in English
Here’s something that may infuriate you when it comes to 4kids.
They completely took out Laboon. They figured it was a filler episode and they cut it out.
Meaning that a certain skeleton crew member would’ve had a little more difficulty connecting with the audience if they cut that out of his backstory.
You gotta wonder how 4kids would've censored future arcs. Like Fishman Island the arc full of sex appeal. Or Marineford the arc full of violence. How would they censor things like Robin's backstory? Or Brook's famous iconic quote? After the timeskip would they just give Nami a giant sweater to cover her revealing top? Zip up Robin's jacket? The questions are limitless
Zoro would lose half his character by not losing hundred liters of blood in each of the later fights.

8:28 Apparently 4Kids acquired a bunch of animes in the same batch, One Piece being one of them.
The reason why there is so much censorship is because they didn't bother to research about One Piece and now they have to do damage control.
I think Eric Stuart (the voice of Kaiba and Brock) was about the only person with concerns about doing the series.
For those wondering why they got rid of Ace's arm tattoo, it's because the 4Kids dub changed his name to Trace and they wanted to cover up any hints at his name being different.
Also at 4:41 the "Dead or alive" text was removed from Luffy's wanted poster.

The stupidest censorship in the video is when Zoro is kicked by unicycle man, they remove the detailing on his sword, because I guess if it has no detail it's not a sword anymore and can't do any harm with the actual sharp, deadly blade at the end
Yeah they didn't know One Piece would be so violent when they acquried it so they tried their best to edit out all "offensive" stuff but eventually they figured it wasn't worth it so they let the show go.
God forbid we let children know that people BLEED.
one genuinely good line from the dub, there's a gag where everyone stops for teddy the mountain man, a bear that ate the old mountain man in the drum kingdom:
"why is everyone stopping for that bear"
"sometimes he's mean, sometimes he's not, you never know"
"ah, he's a bi-polar bear."

The ASCE tattoo on Ace stands For Ace, Sabo, Crybaby (Luffys nickname), and Edward Newgate. The most important people in his life and Sabo has an X because he died.

The A SCE thing was originally ASL for Ace Sabo Luffy
(The L was changed into a C)
Ace didn't get that tattoo until after the incident, that I won't say due to spoiler reasons, but that's the reason the S is crossed out. Otherwise it's just his name.

I'm pretty sure 4kids Sanji is just the same actor as Tristin from the Yu-gi-oh 4kids dub.

You missed the 4kids Dub era, especially the Marines chasing after pirates with their oh so scary Super Soakers. Or whatever contraption Helmeppo had, the "Hammer Gun", or Lucky Roux with his Cork Gun.

It's interesting because a lot of the censorship that 4kids did was because of the TV broadcasting networks that hosted the shows. Those guidelines for kids were pretty strict and 4kids really didn't have a choice but to make some...Questionable changes for them to even be able to broadcast it in the first place
And I think it was already mentioned somewhere in the comments but yeah they never wanted one piece to begin with

For the Ace one, the difference was Ace's tattoo was removed and also for some strange reason, the detail on his belt from the front was changed.

2:44 I understand if you watch dubbed because of the fact that you don't want to read the text, but personally I barely glance at the text while watching and can still read it fine by having it in my peripheral vision.

So, I don't know how far you are in One Piece, so I'll keep this spoiler free, but about Ace's Tattoo: The crossed out S actually has a meaning, and the rest is just his name, ACE. 4Kids erased it cause his name was changed to Portgas D. Trace in the dub, cause Ace is a playing card, and gambling bad I guess.
On the Ace scene with Luffy's bounty, they removed the tattoo on his arm and the DEAD AND ALIVE text on the bounty.
I also heard that 4kids was trying to get the license to a few other shows and ended up getting one piece as a package deal and had no idea what it was or what to do with it.

Hot take I actually kinda like the Smoker change because it makes him look a bit more intimidating when he's just billowing straight smoke out of his body towards the gang like most cartoons have the smoke from the ears for anger but from the mouth kinda gave it a personal underlying seethe just beneath the surface

The way the mouth is always open with his crooked teeth feels so lazy.

Another explanation is just the Ace didn't know how to spell his own name and had to cross out the S lmao
7:59 I know this answer! xD 4kids didn't actually want One Piece but they were forced to take it. It's because they were drunk off the successes of their other female-led shows like Winx Club and Mew Mew Power and wanted Ojamajo Doremi, which they planned to make into Magical Doremi. But Toei wouldn't give them the rights unless they also agreed to buy and dub One Piece as a package deal. So in order to be able to dub Doremi, they had to take One Piece as well.

When it comes to dub vs sub in One Piece. I think each one is the best in some moments and the worse in others. Some scenes the dub is better, sometimes the sub is better, sometimes the manga is better. Really depends on how you like it but disliking something doesnt make it bad
4kids zoro dub is the only voice actor that gives a damn in the dub.

4Kids One Piece is a blight on humanity... and I love it so much because it got me into this amazing story that I'm caught up today. I bought all the censored (and uncensored) DVDs and love to rewatch East Blue in the worst way possible that brings me back to my childhood, it is peak comedy and I'm thankful for it everyday LOL 📍

the text from the show being editid out was just 4kids editing out text in any form even if it was english and safe. also the unfortunate and i guse brilliant but dumb at the same time thing is all the editing is them making censors for multiple country's to save money by making one version. which is also why cards in yugioh where edited to not have text on them and look different from the real world ones because in amarica its counted as a show that is used as a comercial and thats bad (even thou thats all kid shows but ok)

If a dubbing company that mainly specialises in children's shows acquires an anime/cartoon but then spends a LOT of time doing nothing but censoring it, maybe juuuuust maybe, that anime/cartoon isn't for kids. So stop trying to make it for kids.
I am aware that 4Kids just happened to get One Piece in a package deal but still... the above can definitely apply to MANY of their deliberately acquired shows.
Ngl as a kid would watch 4kids version and actually enjoyed it at time but eventually tried to watch it again and couldn't do it.
