- Happy Pride Month squiddos! And today we're covering the reason why Splatoon 3 is able to do the thing Call of Duty, Overwatch and other teams shooters aren't able to do: retain a sizeable LGBT+ audience. Lace up. It's gonna get wild.
Also, keep in mind, this video is made by a straight cis male dumbass who's still figuring this stuff out. Just know I intend to speak positively and express my support for the LGBT+ communities, and if I make any missteps I hope y'all can explain them so I may correct my wrongs.

The self-expression capability in Splatoon is great. There's nearly endless possibilities from only the three gear slots alone, and when combined with everything else there's almost quite literally infinite possibilities. It's a quite robust system, and that's a big part of the charm of the game. I can be literally whoever I want as long as I have the gear pieces.
I’m glad Nintendo did this in this game, I know it sure wasn’t safe for LQBTQ+ back then if things were they way they are now Calliemacn would of never stopped being a splatuber

The very concept of Inklings & octolings, is like relatable to nonbinary people, probably not intentional, but the idea of being a shapeshifting squid person, where things like gender is purely expressive. Is like very appealing ..

The developers did actually do this on purpose sort of. It's in one of the interviews.
Fun Fact: In Splatoon 3, Captain 3 isn't decided on past games! (Same with octo expansion tho if you did play the original that may sway you a bit) While still in the crater if you go up to Cuttlefishes lil tent you can see a drawing of 3 he made and it allows you to change their look- So my captain had the more masc hair

Captain 3 is based on the agent 3 from the expansion or is just randomly selected based on your gender (I think).

I think it's like that since for all the trailers the mc was shown as a female (3 sorta changed this tho)
@@ST2DJOctavio you have to transfer your save data, the same way you get 3 golden Sheldon licenses, rank C- - B- (which u can play) from level 1 and some money I believe.
@@ST2DJOctavio they always show the mcs as female so they're probably dominant in the Inklings species...that's kinda weird to think about considering they don't even have genders now supposedly but voice sfxs....

Captain 3 is just a blank canvas for people to add their personality to. They are supposed to be you. Just like the other custom characters in the game. My Captain 3 22 y/o straight woman with her boyfriend being agent 4. So it really doesn’t matter, as all the characters are whoever you want them to be. That’s what i love about splatoon

Note:
You can customize Agent 3 regardless of whether or not you've played Octo Expansion and linked your Save Dada with Splatoon 3, but you can only do it in the crater and it's rather hidden.
Also, Captain 3 isn't actually mute, with Marie constantly relaying things to Neo 3 (explicitly saying "oh Captain 3 said so-and-so") and such (which makes me wonder why they didn't just make Captain 3 talk if they were gonna consistently have them use Marie as their spokesperson)
Captain 3 doesnt talk because they are the player of splatoon 1 and in that game they dont talk, plus there is a personality issue. Everyone who played will have played differentally and had a different personality so it isnt fair to make Captain 3 have only one of those infinite personalities from people who played splatoon 1.
I think agent 3 would be considered "selectively mute". Meaning that they feel comfortable talking to Marie because they know them, but couldn't talk with people they're not comfortable with. That would make it so Marie would then be the person to relay messages to neo agent 3, because captain 3 doesn't feel comfortable enough yet with the player.
I like to think that Captain either whispers, uses sign language, or simply uses physical expressions to tell Marie what they're thinking, and she just does her best to relay the information in a coherent, understandable way. As for what goes on in Site 1 when talking to them, either Marie just lies about them saying anything, or Captain has some weird telepathy sort of power, the latter of which is highly unlikely.
@@lazdahumanMarie asks if the player can understand what the Captain is saying, which would suggest that they know some kind of rare language that not many know.
I believe Marie mentions at the beginning of the game that the silence is nothing personal, they're just really shy.
splatoon has had the most accepting fanbase ive ever seen in terms of outside the game. As someone who never really played many multiplayer games growing up (s3 being my first step into pvp actually), its still frustrating from time to time after only playing games like pokemon and other pve's. but knowing that on the other side of the game is someone like me and just has a sheer love for this game, makes all my gamer rage worth it lol.

THANK YOU for acknowledging that within the game Agent 3 is only ever referred to with they/them! It's something I feel like doesn't get talked about a lot, but it's very special to me.
I think it's less of the game being gay, but more of the fanbase being gay. Either way happy late pride month.

the thing I've noticed is people who played splat 1 are mostly straight and people who played splat 2 and up are mostly LGBT
The main reason Agent Three has they/the pronouns is because you can customize them to be a male or female. You can do this in Octo Canyon by interacting with a poster of Agent 3. Your character is also not specified to be male or female to be more accepting of LGBTQ.

honestly i disagree with the fact that when you come out you have to be as over the top about it as possible, you had a pretty good reason but it just isnt true. its totally valid to be completely chill about your gender identity and/or sexual oreantation. you CAN be over the top about it, although you might be a bit annoying. just saying that was a bit of a misconception.

I love Pearl and Marina, their relationship is so wholesome and I love customizing my octoling based on OCs and a new self insert who themselves are queer.
Also note it doesn't have traditional communication methods like other shooters do. Smaller in comparison, but you're far less likely to get called a slur for, say, having a feminine voice in a game that doesn't have easy access to synchronous spoken communication, which makes it friendlier. You can turn off voice in other shooters, but there is sort of a standing expectation that voice will be on, where there isn't such in Splatoon.
And I also absolutely have to attest to self expression, too. I'm transmasc, for instance. The originally "masculine" haircut with one tentacle in a holder with one tentacle coming off the side like a bang is one of the first gender affirming haircuts I got in real life - & the first hairstyle with which I was ever referred to as "he" by strangers - and the hairstyle I prefer today is still heavily inspired by it.
I love splatoon cause it so gay. I love the plaza posts w lbgtq stuff on it, it makesme feel more happy knowing others like me play that game. I love knowing how acepting the community is. I love all the customizing options. I love the gameplay. I love pearlina. All in all I love the game

If you have the Nintendo Switch Online app on your phone, you can access SplatNet. There you can manage your gear combos and the share link will send the image to social media or your storage space.

As far as im aware the only ship in Splatoon that's both straight and doesn't involve player characters whose gender can change is Hironika 😂 and that's quite possibly the smallest ship the series has unless there's one between manga characters.

I personally like the flag simply because it’s an Ally flag, whereas the straight flag was used to hurt our cause the ally flag is in support of gays . Although I can see an argument for it’s redundancy like “if you support us then just wear our flags” (sorry that I’m kinda bringing you back into this months later)

I absolutely ADORE Splatoon. I’m gay, trans, and autistic- Splatoon happens to be my special interest! I love the idea of a world where you can just… be whatever. The recurring theme (especially in the third game) of free self expression is so beautiful to me. AND THE MUSIC. OH THE MUSIC. I just love this franchise so much. I love seeing that being fruity and nd is a lot of more common in this fan base than I thought lol. Sure, there’s a lot of weirdos (and people who just hate gay and autistic people who are pretty much the majority of the fandom what’s up with that) But it makes me happy that there’s so many people like me here too. Even the characters. I fell in LOVE with Callie and Marie at first sight. I projected onto them HEAVILY lol- As a kid, in my mind, Callie and Marie were always Asian-Latina, Callie had ADHD, and Marie was autistic. HEAVY self projection, sure, but for some strange reason these characters made 10 year old me feel so seen. And, yes, incredibly cliche, but as an envy I heavily project onto Shiver. Technically uncanon, at least in the American localization, but the idea of a cold, sassy, vigilante enby character makes me so happy. As soon as i heard Harmony refer to Ryan as “they,” I felt like it wasn’t real- was I dreaming? Surely they wouldn’t… but nah, it’s true! I then heavily attached to them even though they’re an incredibly minor character. And Acht! Acht makes me so happy! I love them. This franchise has and will always be a part of my soul. I’m always ecstatic to meet someone with a similar interest in Splatoon.

Splatoon is actually the least gay shooter there is. Other shooters like COD, Overwatch, and Fortnite are made by super-woke companies and occasionally host LGBTQ+ events.

Idk the only problem with Lgbtq stuff is me not able to know who is is a boy and who is girl. Mainly bc (for example) boys in Splatoon 3 can now have girl and boy hairstyles from splatoon 2... i dont even know if this even has to do something with lgbtq......
well when you think about it, do you really need to know? I mean I just use whatever I feel like. they're not gonna notice, it's an online game without voice chat. you could also learn to use they/them instead, which I do half the time anyways. it *kinda* has to do with the LGBTQ community because typically, men who wear long hair, or women with buzz cuts are considered queer, even if they're straight, or not even trans. but ultimately, it doesn't matter what their gender is, doesn't it?

They stopped hairstyles from being gender-locked and replaced gender (inkling boy/girl) with style to be more inclusive to non-binary and non-conforming folk :)
