Got this grinder some month ago and loving it. After probably putting 5 pounds of coffee through it, it is becoming very consistent with grind size. Such a great upgrade from my Rancilio Rocky
I had its predecessor, the DF83. I had huge problems with grind consistency and swapped it for the Niche Duo, with which, I have no issues. This model does seem to have addressed the problems of the DF83, though and this was a balanced review, thank you.
I just got one for my birthday. Coming from the Sette 270. I cupped two espresso shots and on each grinder and was surprised I could easily tell them apart. Luckily I really enjoyed the DF83V better.
I’ve had mine for 3 months and extremely happy with it. I purchased it with brew burrs and SSP LS (Lab Sweet) and it makes perfect pour over. I get zero retention from it and BONUS the Weber Blind Shaker fits perfectly. I have the new Lagom 01 102mm blind burrs heading to me very curious how it compares. Josh you nailed this video about this grinder it’s truly a solid piece other than the looks of it
@@russb3n hey! How do you like the SSP LS burrs? I got the espresso burrs since I do both spro and pour over but I’ve still been using my hand grinder for pour overs. Have you tried the lab sweet for espresso? I’m thinking I might get a set of LS to do both.
Would be great to hear of a D64 with HU SSp vs the df83v with stock burrs. As myself and others in market for a espresso(no care for filter) want to get chocolaty great espresso, yet dont want to spend 700+ Then buy new burrs. but if Df64 with ssp burrs, which is closse to being equal prive would make for a interesting match up.
This is better by far 🙌 Faster, cleaner, smoother, better tasting. I couldn't necessarily say this in regards to the DF64 vs DF83. But the upgrade from DF64V to DF83V is noticeable.
Fellow Ode gen-2 burrs are amazing! I wouldn't say purchasing a DF83V and Brew Burrs is a massive increase in quality of flavour - but performance wise - the DF83V is quicker, cleaner with a more precise grind adjustment 👌
It's personal preferences - IMHO I do like a bit of balance with some texture - so Light roast beans with a Unimodal burr set like the SSP MP - will punch out some juicy and super clean, transparent shots - though these wont work for every coffee - and I'd miss a little body, texture and lingering aftertaste in it - ESPECIALLY if adding to milk. I'd be looking at the SSP RS or the Cast Steel Lab Sweets for a balance 👌
@@AlternativeBrewing I was wondering if it was supplied with an adapter that could accommodate a portafilter and a dosing ring. I suppose if it did you would have mentioned it. It does look like there's enough space for a bottomless portafilter and a dosing ring though. Wonder if the 3d printing crowd could knock something up? 🤔
Still waiting for the grinder I ordered that said it was going to be delivered in May. You guys make good reviews but the customer service has been pretty garbage and there is no way to actually get in contact with anyone outside of logging at ticket.
Hey there, I'm so sorry you've been kept waiting! Is it this grinder specifically you're talking about, or another? I know many grinders have had ETAs that are unrealistic - we aim to pass on the most up-to-date timeframes - but occasionally - this get blown out; ie: the Timemore Sculptor. If there's anything I can help with, let me know
noted ! Ive known some filter burrs to brew for espresso - but you're entirely right - I shouldn't waste yours or my time showing things that don't work but exploring more of what it can do 🙌
The grinder is a espresso grinder at default, why are we mixing and confusing and really muddying the cup with cross referencing brew burrs. Even the Niche is not a Zero and we are doing brew on a grinder that doesnt come with brew burrs, it comes with espresso burrs, and what many people will look for. Does the espresso from the DLC espresso burrs SUCK that bad? Most anyone buying an espresso grinder is going to make......wait for it....ESPRESSO! Make a alternate video for brew burrs as a purchase option for whoever thought its perfectly normal to spend $800-900 for a pour over drip coffee grinder. I have subbed you because you do many great things in your videos.... I mean even this one, you are covering things we need to hear about the grinder, doing tasting, as well, but.... This one happens to be the one I need to hear you put through the paces...for what it was made for....espresso. Cheers! xoxo BTW, what does "#50" or #70 signify? I didn't understand that. I know the grinder espresso points are around 12-15 maybe to 17, as you mention. I doubt you skipped espresso tasting entirely?!!! Also, I think showing the grinds at different settings was GREAT, just to be clear, both cups were the same, just split into 2 cups to see more of its consistency , I take it?
Thanks so much for your sub and I appreciate the feedback 🙌 I wholeheartedly agree that it'd be rare that anyone will be buying a grinder this expensive just to be making Filter coffee at home. The numbers 50, 70 and so on is reference to the grind dial. And Yes - both cups used were the same - sorry this was an inaccurate Broll of another cup I used during takes.
@@AlternativeBrewing People might be spending lots on grinders for filter coffee, IDK. My point is, its a espresso first grinder, Lets try and make espresso with it. The espresso range is around 12 to 17 on it. None of your taste cups are anywhere near espresso. they are all for brew. Thats the only point I am making. Cheers!
Df83 is poorly designed. The exit chute and declumpers are hopeless from factory. Hope this is better functioning. Aesthetically this looks ridiculous though.
Yeah so much better 🙌 Got to wonder what the OG-DF83 would have been if it had this style. My belief is the vertical burrs are so much better at this. 64mm can get away with horizontal burrs -- anything bigger - go vertical

Yes 🙌
Not seasoned burrs i take it

You're welcome ! 🙌 this over the Df83 all day. And the Niche Duo is a beautiful grinder 100%
thank you for your perfect video like always . so helpful ordered one today !
Awesome! Thank you! Glad it was helpful & enjoy 😀
Really enjoy your channel...good review...Hope you'll review both the time more 078 and 078S someday
I hope so too! 😃

Great to hear! good choice on burrs 👌

What a wonderfully vague comment
I'm curious to know your opinion on this vs the Mazzer Philos.
I am too - helpfully I get my hands on a Philos soon 😀
Nice video ! How is DF83V in comparison to timemore078s you reckon ? Which one would you recommend more ? Thanks !
You’ll have to wait for that comparison video 😂 I haven’t fully completed my assessments

Help! DF83V or Varia VS6? Will be using between espresso, pour over and cold brew. Which one do you recommend please? Thanks!
I’d go the VS6 at this stage. Good amount of adaptability to go forward with. 83mm category is a bit stale rn
OMG another grinder hahaha! Just take my money Josh 😂
hahahaha 😂 It's not slowing down either ! Ive got at least another 4-5 grinders to review in the studio rn ! ... time for a comparison vid probably
is there a better-cheaper option for espresso only?
I'd go the DF54 in that case 🙌
why would you cold start the rpm isn't constant
How dose it compare to Df64v?
This is better by far 🙌 Faster, cleaner, smoother, better tasting. I couldn't necessarily say this in regards to the DF64 vs DF83. But the upgrade from DF64V to DF83V is noticeable.
Hey Josh. How does the brew burrs compare to say the fellow ode.

What do you think about 83mm ssp MP burrs for light roast coffees?
It's personal preferences - IMHO I do like a bit of balance with some texture - so Light roast beans with a Unimodal burr set like the SSP MP - will punch out some juicy and super clean, transparent shots - though these wont work for every coffee - and I'd miss a little body, texture and lingering aftertaste in it - ESPECIALLY if adding to milk. Yes! I’m thinking of going the lab sweet burrs. It’s just a big money step on the 83mm burrs.
Does it have the capability to grind directly into a portafilter?
No
no - it is clean grinding - though not really setup for the portafilter to rest under chute easily.
@@AlternativeBrewing I was wondering if it was supplied with an adapter that could accommodate a portafilter and a dosing ring. I suppose if it did you would have mentioned it. For sure. Anything is possible with 3d printing 🙌

Why do reviewers try and use filter burrs for espresso. This should be like a last minute, Just for the heck of it type of play.
