@@guyvandermire4146 Actually, I DIDN'T know that. I was just responding to the OP's post, and what type of acting that requires. If Penn did that, and I have no reason to doubt the OP, then that's pretty cool. @@danielc1978 I had no idea but as most of us have been saying the movie was really very much like highschool. We dealt with breakups and teenage pregnancy. Iron Maiden and Ozzy were probably the ones I remember seeing most. But ZZ Top, Def Leppatd, Rush, Journey, and yes Chip Trick were see daily. Many of us worked at some burger joint we hated, but there was not a lot of other jobs for 16 year olds. During the summers we did other jobs though..
I remember going to see this movie in 9th grade with a buddy of mine. We snuck into the "Rated R" movie at 14 or 15 hears old and we thought we were doing some serious stuff! LOL. I don't think they were smelling Xerox photocopies as they weren't that common in schools in 1982. It was the purple-ink mimeograph papers that were still cold to the touch and had a pleasant, unique, chemical smell that can't be described in human words, but is similar to that if you ever opened up camera film or a disposable camera's packaging.
Only people who had smelled the paper after being freshly copied by a mimeograph machine could understand that reference, when every student gets a whiff.
This movie is dear to my heart because I graduated the same year this movie was released (1982). To all millennials and younger; remember, we were cool and immortal during our teens and twenties also. Learn as though you are to live forever, live as though you are to die tomorrow.

I grew up in santa cruz. At the high school I attended in my freshman year was a guy who was exactly like Jeff Spicoli. This was 1974, long before “Fast Times”. He was only there for a semester but when I saw the movie years later, the image of that student jumped out. I believe that there was probably a Jeff Spicoli in every high school near the california coastline.
The school district, the parents, and the teachers will no longer tolerate the much-needed Mr. Hands of the world, as society itself is disintegrating right before our eyes.
@@JoseSanchez-zo5tb There is never simply one cause for anything to happen. Fatherlessness is a big part of it, and that leads to kids coming to school without respect for others and having few boundaries, which causes all kinds of problems in the classroom. Further, this generation of parents and principals supports their kids' misbehaviors in the classroom, attacking the teacher who is trying to hold the line. Everyone BUT the teacher is supported, so the teacher is forced to either leave the profession or to back off and let the kids run amuck in the classroom and just collect a paycheck.
Ray Walston stayed at my apartment complex back in 1980 when he was doing summer stock at the Globe theater in San Diego. I played a few games of pool with him.. he really didn't like to lose. I love that he noticed one student missing and makes a point that the student return to his class. It didn't matter how difficult the student was, it was Hand's job to teach him.
What I probably should’ve mentioned in the post is that I have a friend who looks just like Spicoli, he even dressed up as him for Halloween one year lol
I had a student get mad at me in class, I asked him if he was done, he said yes and I said "Good, now go sit down Spicoli." He had no idea what I was talking about until he came to class the next day and told me he watched this movie. He thought the movie was great and said he did look like Spicoli.

@Mark Miles I'm a teacher and you're 100% right Mark. The students are totally checked out but to your typical trump-fellating internet reactionary the fact that Mr. Hand postures as upholding old law-'n-order is proof he's some great pedagogue.
Yeah, but that is real life too. I had a crush the early part of freshman year, and her name was McDonald. I don't think she noticed me however. Come senior year, she was married and sitting right beside me. But you get four people, when you call three, if like in this class, two people share the same name. A cheerleader in the front row had a thing about me, and would glance back at times, and her name was McDonald as well. Interestingly enough, I got a call some years back for one of our reunions, and it was the freshman crush McDonald girl (a cheerleader too), and she left a message, including her hyphened name about the reunion. Back in high school, I didn't know whom she married, but the name she left on the answering machine, was the name of a football player who sat beside the other McDonald girl (they weren't sisters) in that class. He seemed like a really cool guy, but as we sat in different parts of the class, we never got to talking.
This one time, in US History class, some stoner dude ordered a pizza right in the middle of class. Can you believe it? Haha the teacher was all like, “what do you think you’re doing having pizza delivered on my time?!” Stoner dude was like, “well, since I am here too, it’s really our time.” The teacher said, “you’re right. It is our time.” Then he took the freshly delivered pizza away from stoner dude and offered it to the rest of the class, making sure that stoner dude did not get any of it. The teacher took the last slice for himself and ate it right in front of stoner dude. It was real funny. 🍕
You know eating helps the learning process by alot kids tend to have an easier time getting taught something when they are relaxed this rigid school structure we have today was never the way
That simple line is my favorite of all his memorable lines. I always wondered if he improvised there. It was just so off the cuff, the kind of thing you might think when you walk into class or the cafeteria and you’re looking for a familiar face.
In 79 I was a softmore in Phoenix, Arizona. My buddy, Rick would put his school books in his locker and take out his bong for lunch. Wed go the the park and get stoned, then he'd put his bong back in his locker and take out his books after lunch. He didn't give an F IF they found his bong or not..hillarious
Spicolis scenes made the movie. The rest of it is ok, but his scenes (especially with Mr. Hand) were epic. Mr. Hand: Just what in the hell do you think you are doing? Spicoli: Learning about Cuba and having some food. Lol.
Yeah, Spicoli stole scenes, but this movie is incredibly well done. Too bad they didn't include the scene where he crashes the football player's car "Bo Derek's tits" "I like sex"
Lei Ying Lo that was a good scene. I thought the funniest part was when he told his friend his dad could fix it because he was a tv repairman. But the best part was the genius way he covered up the wreck.
I was in high school in Southern California in the mid 70's- This movie covered all bases. It's a perfect representation of what suburban high school life was like back in the day.

Who didn’t know a spicolli in high school. He is a classic. Stoned every day in high school. I still know a few of them, didn’t amount to much but didn’t amount to bad either, still doing what hey want on their terms so who is wrong.
that wonderful pause at 5:22 was the result of editing. according to the director, Amy Heckerling, there was no actual pause between the end of mr. hand's question and spicoli's response. penn responded immediately. but during editing they decided to mute hand's dialogue, while keeping it entirely on ray walston's close up. so, when penn appears to be taking a few seconds to think about how to respond, he's actually just waiting for walston to deliver his line. aahhh, the magic of editing. it helped make sean penn a STAR!
Absolutely like Mr. Hand's way of getting through to air head Spicoli. Sean Penn beginning to show his future acting abilities. His voice, body mannerisms and affect are spot on. Really grandl to see an actor developing into a great artisan of their craft

I had a teacher like him. 10th grade, Geometry. I owe that man a lot. He was an officer in the Navy for 19 years, so he was very organized and focused. He was tough, but you could tell that he genuinely cared about his students. He is one of the best teachers I ever had. And on top of that, I was one of those care-free class clowns, so I was a bit of an obstacle. However, it didn't stop him from getting his job done. Eventually I started going to extra help for the class during lunch, where he would re teach a whole lesson to me if I misunderstood it. I ended up passing that class with flying colors. He was great, and a rare find in the modern educational system. God bless him.

@@guyvandermire4146 Actually, I DIDN'T know that. I was just responding to the OP's post, and what type of acting that requires.
If Penn did that, and I have no reason to doubt the OP, then that's pretty cool. Better than someone, say, Daniel Day-Lewis in either "Gangs of New York", or 'There Will Be Blood" (Day-Lewis is KNOWN for his method acting, with insane tales by his co-stars and others), or Heath Ledger in Batman: the Dark Knight, where both actors went down some really dark roads, with Ledger actually succumbing to his madness and mania. I'm sure the madness probably pushed him to the drugs. I don't think Ledger ever had drug use in his background, prior. So better that Penn took a "happier" (or "chill") take on things. 😀
When Spicoli says, "I don't know," I think he's just being straight-up honest.

Rock t-shirts were worn at least a couple of times a week. Iron Maiden and Ozzy were probably the ones I remember seeing most. Our school lol! See what it did to my brain.
