CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Spicoli (Sean Penn) learns that Mr. Hand (Ray Walston) has zero tolerance for tardiness.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Amy Heckerling's adaptation of Cameron Crowe's Fast Times at Ridgemont High is often considered one of the finest films of a disreputable genre (the teen sex comedy), and kick-started the careers of many future stars. The center of this ensemble film is Jennifer Jason Leigh as Stacy Hamilton. She is a young, innocent high-school student who, as the film opens, is asking for advice from her friend, the sexually outspoken Linda Barrett (Phoebe Cates). Stacy takes a liking to nebbish Mark Ratner (Brian Backer), but he is too afraid to make a move even after Stacy all but throws herself at him. She eventually hooks up with Mark's more confident best friend, Mike Damone (Robert Romanus). When not concerning itself with these four characters, the film spends time with stoned surfer dude Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn) and his ongoing feud with history teacher Mr. Hand (Ray Walston). The film includes brief appearances by such future stars as Nicolas Cage, Eric Stoltz, and Forest Whitaker.

Now I know why Spicoli ordered the Pizza. He missed the "not eating in this class" speech since he was late.
Or just to piss mr hand off lol
Or he had the munchies
@@dmac5935 yeah more like that lol
@@donaldkepple4927 Or it's just in the script. HAHAHAHA... JK
I wondered about that, lol. Thanks!
“Yeah, I’m registered in this class.”
“What class?”
Mr. Hand, one of my favorite movie characters of all time. Ray Walston, a very talented and underrated actor.
Ray Walston really nailed this part. I had so many teachers that behaved that way.
@@catvansancina4644 Agreed. This scene belongs to Mr. Hand played by the great Ray Walston who I bet put on a comedic acting clinic that day for all those young actors on set. Can you imagine what a learning experience it was watching these two experts do this bit live that day? Awesome.
Ain't nothin' but a dame!
I used to work with a teacher was the niece of Ray Walston, she said he did alot theater work.
E-A-T-I-N-G.
I like how at the end Mr Hand turns out to be a not so bad guy. He hates having his time wasted and Spicoli is always wasted, but at the end Spicoli steps up and proves he is not so dumb. And Mr. Hand kind or respects that
Spot on. He didn't hate Spicoli, he just wanted him to stop wasting time.
@@Surfer041 But, like, seems to me, like, Mr Hand jus wanted to show JEff that like with the Platt Amendment, and American revolutionaries and all, they realized that they left this England place 'cause it was bogus; so if they don't get some cool rules themselves - pronto - they'll just be bogus too!
@@RaptorFromWeegee Pretty close!
He did surprisingly well learning one on one
The more I get older the more I appreciate teachers like Mr. Hand.
Ok boomer
@@dadawg3810 It’s true though. Not enough teachers today give a damn about their students.
@Austin Edmund Agree.
I don’t he’s still a piece of garbage to me 🤮
@@smorris281 agree to a point. a lot of kids never get a break at home. never get a smile at home. school shouldn't be more of the same and Mr. Hand can often only help/inspire/rub off on those kids he finds a way NOT to kick out of his class. A teacher like Mr. Hand should beware missed opportunities with certain students, if he really does give a damn about every single one.
love the 80's....when you go to school. ...and had a part time job....and some good rock and roll
Mario Garza I know exactly what you mean,I was in 10 grade in 1986 and I partied alot like spikoly in the movie. The music and friends and partying went together great
You are SO right about that,I sure miss it 👍
People still go to school and have a part time job but the rock and roll part is awesome
IKR
I love the early 2000s where i also went to school, had a par time job, and some good rock and roll
The chemistry between Ray Walston and Sean Penn.
Magical!
The scene at the end is great, when they both know they've made a new friend.
Ray is awesome. Even the days when he had antennas.
"It's the pizza guy sir."
I love that most people know the movie just by hearing that line.
R.I.P. Taylor Negron.
Yes. He was a great actor. I loved him on Friends.

Yeah, we all saw it too. Literally all of us.
Mr. Hand is the teacher you hate in school but when you get into the "real world" you come to appreciate and are thankful for.
Rest in peace, brilliant comic actor, Ray Walston, aka Mr. Hand. Thanks for posting this classic clip.
From someone who was in high school in the '80s, this movie was high school in the '80s. The only thing - that I can think of right now - that they didn't show (I.e., 1980's high school life) was the Friday night cruise; that was our social networking.
i graduated in 2000 no internet everyone hung out downtown
jay fairley or better yet, the mall... teens could contact each other by paper messaging each other at school to meet up there. My friends and I called each other on the public phones using the phone booth's number, which we planned ahead for. Today, public phones are rarely used, and the phone companies or servers now blocked the phones from receiving free incoming calls... Bummer...
everyone hung out at the park and drank. then you heard about the stories on Monday. that was social media in the 80s.
Bullshit Jay, there was internet in 2000! Sure there wasn't social media for a few more years, and it was way slower on dialup, but I was a teen and went on AOL and fansites and chatrooms all the time. Stop trying to make our teen years sound older than they are, lol
JPMcFly1985Two #FeelTheBern You totally busted his bubble.
The sniffing was such a nice touch. For those of us too young - those were mimeographs that used methanol to transfer the print to the paper. We all did exactly the same thing when we got handed still damp copies.
Movies like this never get old and never go out of style, because they are realistic. All the way back to American Graffiti.
ffdztdr 70s had American Graffiti
80s had Fast Times at Ridgemont High
90s had Dazed and Confused
And the 2000s had Superbad :)

“May I come in?” Lol! This scene is effing perfect
You’re right, it is perfectly written, acted and directed. It’s outrageous yet entirely believable.
"That's the name they gave me" shall be my response every chance I get, Lmao
When he breaks and smells the cigarette so casually lol!
Because he was convinced EVERYONE is on dope. 🤣
Hand says just like you wouldn't me coming to your house teaching on your time ..AND he does that to Spicolli at the end!...cool teacher.
One of the best lines in the movie is when the kid says " This guy's been stoned since the 3rd grade...."
idk why but the way Spicoli is softly knocking the door is hilarious to me
The attention to detail with everyone smelling the exquisite freshly-mimeographed paper is absolute perfection.
This may be dumb but what were they smelling it for? I remember old printer paper used to have a certain smell and warmth after freshly printed but never felt that urge to huff it lol
@@tomburress4928 are we talking about the same thing...the old mimeographed paper that printed with purple ink? That paper was always cold when the teacher would hand it out, and had this delicious chemical smell that everyone in the class enjoyed. I sniffed that paper for 5 or 6 years until copier machines came out.
@@biggsterboy ahhh that’s what I was wondering cause only thing I have for context is late 90s type printer paper
@@tomburress4928 You had to have grown up in the 1970's or early '80's to fully understand that. Everything was copied with a mimeograph back then.
@@tomburress4928
Before copy machines and computer printers all the handouts you got in school were done with this blue ink called minograph fluid. I'm not sure how to describe the smell but it could be pretty strong on freshly printed stuff. I never saw kids enjoying it like that, and I certainly didn't like it.
I don't remember any of this...
Jeffery Spicioli probably all the pot you smoked man
You have a cute butt. >:)
clever!

why did you become a libtard?
This is a teen high school classic movie that NEVER NEEDS TO BE TOUCHED OR REMADE!!!!
The same with The Last American Virgin!!!!!
Both are classics from the 80s...
LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!!!!!

Same here! Class of ‘82...miss those days...
YES ME TOO.. CLASS OF 1982.. Awesome times to be in high school
Year I was born
That was my first year of high school, too.
Same here. Class of 81.
This movie helped to define an era, which will never be again. Love it!
Ray Walston was brilliant. We all had a similar teacher. He played the character perfectly
Why did he lock the doors isnt that illegal? and against the fire code?
@@mattbartolovich8228 I would imagine it is however, Mr Hand hates truancy and tardiness. So safety comes after interrogating a late student like Jeffrey Spicoli. Lol. What a great character
Oh yes defintly he did!!!
Out teachers has em closed not locked
@@mattbartolovich8228uhm an era when you could paddle a bad behaving student; and teachers had a lounge to go smoke and kids could go off school grounds for lunch; an era where no such thing as ‘make up days’ for snow days existed; an era when you could have a gun rack in your truck but never once thought about bringing a gun in; an era where you had a good long and welcomed for real summer break; an era where they mostly taught the ‘3 R’s’ and some STEM. and left the social engineering to parents.
I could go on…
Was a great time.
Ray Walston was perfect for this part. Definitely one of Hollywood's BEST character actors.
Jennifer Jason Leigh's "yes Sir" was not acting!
I remember sitting in the local movie theater at age 19 and laughing myself silly as I watched this movie. Fond memories
“May I come in?”
“Oh please! I get so lonely when I hear that third attendance bell ring and all my kids are not here.”
LMAO😂
nothing like fresh ditto paper to get high off in the morning.
It was the only way to get thru the long ass days
Ditto paper! I remember that so well. Good old memeogragh machines. If someone makes a machine that produces meme's would it be called a meme-ogragh?
Osiris Salgado There was something mysteriously attractive and addicting in that fresh smell.
Did the ink from those old copy machines really make you high?
@@pastorofmuppets325Nice yeah super high, you had to be careful you didn't sniff it too much, as you wouldn't be able to walk straight.
2:13 cracks me up every time.
Mr Hand was my inspiration as an educator I often use his line when students are late!
It is SO WILD to look back and think/know that I was standing there (really!) when they were shooting that scene of those dudes coming out of Volkswagen van. I was actually an extra on that movie and little did we know, cinematic history was being made. I would say they probably did about 8 takes of that scene. And as I recall, I got a chance to see every one of those takes (they had me staying close, in case they needed me as an extra in a related scene). My gosh, I SO wish I had been called to be one of the students that day in the class (I wasn't).

You've been stoned since the 2nd grade.
Funny thing is this is actually a really good performance by Penn. He got the mannerisms, gestures, movement, look in his eyes of a stoner down just perfect. A foreshadowing of what was to come in his career.
Penn- 40+ years of Movies and Millions and Millions of $$. You? nothing.
PiCheZvara That just prove a great actor 😊
This is exactly when I went to high school and the movie is spot on in most of its parts. The teachers were straight up with you and did not sugarcoat anything. Your feelings were not even on the radar. You either got yourself squared away, or you fell behind and flipped burgers for the rest of your life. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but I am so grateful for those old school teachers.
Not that there's anything wrong with that? Don't you hate the pay for flipping burgers?
@ I’m in California and I do. I thinks it’s ridiculous to pay $20/Hr for fast food service. If you want more money, go to school and learn some thing more substantial to gain more money. You should never ask for more money perpetually for the same thing that you’re doing.
Will somebody please give it up for Ray Walton’s performance as Mr. Hand!
He was definitely awesome as mr hand but i bet u dont know ray walton played in a movie with lee marvin and clint eastwood
Spicoli and Mr.Hand made this movie a classic.
The original stoner, Penn set the standard for this type of character. every spaced out acting role from this point on, was inspired by spicoli. Even chong himself could not match this performance. "Dude! that was my skull! Im so wasted!"
Did you know he adapted that persona from the surfers from dog town? Whom went on to revolutionize skateboarding as we know it. Theres a scene where he takes a checkerboard Van's shoe and hits himself in the head with it. that shoe was worn by Stacey Paralta. Penn narrated the documentary on them called the Z-boys of dog town.
So lucky to have been a teen during these times.
I don't know why - but I can watch this over and over and over.
"E. A. T. I. N. G" lol. I think it's hilarious how Mr. Hand treats these ids like they're 6 years old.
"Hey, I know that dude."
Awesome days. I remember smelling the freshly copied paper, it had an amazing smell.
and liquid paper
I wondered if I was the only one to notice that.
I went to highschool in the 80's and this movie touched on every reality of that time. Everyone who went to school back then can relate to something.
_"Just like you wouldn't want me to come to your house some evening and discuss U.S. history on YOUR time."_
Little did they know that that was an actual threat.
Lol, it was great foreshadowing
True I just realized that.
In what way?
@@mattbartolovich8228 It happened, just before the end
The tension in this scene though. I still remember seeing this for the first time like it was yesterday. We saw this type of conflict in real life LAUSD almost every day in Jr High and High School in the mid 80s through early 90's. It felt like 10 eternities to finally graduate from high school.
As a teacher this is great! We would lose our jobs today if we followed most of the antics of Mr Hand in that scene.
@jostia7986 : Is it because nowadays school administrators are more concerned with the rights and feelings of students that allowing their teachers to maintain discipline in his/her classroom ????
A job is not a profession/ Do you see how legalism and statism and the vast assortment of ideologies and academic dictum complicate life and impede our cultural evolution? I don't care to memorize textbook information and I won't obey the communist state/ Real education is discerning your vocation in life and learning from experience/ Life is theological, not ideological/
Antics? Strategy.
Good ol Ray Walston as Mr. Hand! I remember watching him on My Favorite Martian in the old days of television!
bubhub64 Ray Walston was also in the Movie Silver Streak
Uncle Martin!
Apparently after this movie came out he enjoyed the next generation recognizing him as Mr. Hand because he felt so typecasted as Uncle Martin on My Favorite Martian.
Mr. Hand wasn't afraid of punk students
sharkheadism Neither was Paul Gleason in The Breakfast Club!
sharkheadism He would be if he was in the movie Class of 1984.
+Douglas Chapman that movie was wild
Bet he wouldn't do that if he was teaching in a inner city school.
I think Mr hand was in the military
I was like 11 yo when the movie came out and I remember watching on cable, Spicoli and Mr. Hands are the best. RIP Ray Walston.
I remember him as Candy from the 1992 remake of Of Mice and Men.
Just noticed the orange Volkswagen van they're getting stoned in was a first generation model. Got the split windshield. I think those were probably pretty rare, even back in the early 80s when this was filmed
I heard years ago that it was Cameron Crowe's van that he moved from Seattle to LA with. That could be bullshit. Don't know how to check it out.
Some of the comments get the name of the printing technology wrong. Mr. Hand's list of quizzes was printed using a "ditto" machine. The ditto technology used a volatile solvent to transfer a waxy substance, usually purple in color, to the printed page. That solvent was what we all loved to sniff. (I was in my high school's class of 1971.) In contrast, the "mimeograph" or "mimeo" technology used plain old ink, usually black, squeezed through a stencil onto the printed page. The ink didn't have an odor. But mimeo was messy, and if the teacher was in a hurry he or she could easily splash some onto clothing. Ditto was easy and fast, and any spilled solvent evaporated quickly.
I never knew that. I'm glad you told the public. I used to wonder if they sniffed it in the hopes it had cocaine on it.
Lol for the younger people we should all agree that spicolli was really rocking the checkered vans before all of us it's crazy 😂
Smelling the worksheets was a real thing that we used to do in the 1980s. Back then schools couldn't afford copiers, they used a type of printing press. And the ink had a sweet smell to it.
Hey bud, what's your problem?
No problem at all.. I think you know where the front office is.
"I hope you had a hell of a piss Arnold"
Classic!
I think Mr. Hand is a hard man, he made Spicolli humble on many occasions.
i would like to think most of us have had a teacher like mr hand...and decades later we realize how invaluable he was....
Jennifer Jason Leigh's "yes Sir" was not acting!
😂😂There's no birthday party for me here.
Is this how his meeting with El Chapo went?
One of my favorite movies of all time reminds me of my youth spicolli made it tottaly awsome
Gooood one!!
This guy is actually a pretty legit teacher. At least he printed out the class schedule and what would be covered. I’d probably still be late though.
Th way Spicoli says “Mr hand” is so a+ it’s not even funny
You haven't lived until you've smelled paper fresh and damp from the mimeograph machine lol
Sean Penn's character made the movie, hilariously funny.
I was class of 87 and for years we always smelled the freshly printed copies, it did smell really good for some reason
00:04, one of the greatest character entrances in movie history, right up there with Harry Lime and Darth Vader. Everything you need to know about the guy right there.
I've been thinking about this, Mr. Hand.
Their interactions were easily the best part of this entire movie!
"Hey, I know that dude" classic stoner talk, this movie is awesome.
Now this is a teacher!!

LOL ... Jeff Spicoli meets My favorite Martian.
Totally ignores him and goes back to his lesson ahahaha ahaha
"This is US History. I see the globe right there."
Every class has a Spicoli 😂
Hey, bud what's your problem? hahahaha
One of my favorite moments of Sean Penns acting is that opening scene when he falls on his back stoned as he gets ready for class
I love how Mr. Hand would take complete control of his class.
Because Mr Hand was a good teacher.
Because nowadays, the students would just yell at him, and if he stepped up to a student, the way Mr. Hand did, they' shoot him.
We need more Mr. Hands in our schools.
He seemed strict and rigid, but he was not that bad at all, in fact, quite real! And the fact that he and Spicoli butted heads and he paid a visit to his home to make up for lost time, there was no hatred between them
I have ALWAYS respected teachers like Mr. Hand. They actually control the class but at the same time are fair. They are able to actually teach and are passionate subject matter experts on the subjects they teach.
Sniffing the ditto copies, I totally did that in high school too
Lmaoooo. I looked this up because I had a dream last night, and the teacher was asking me to sign him out. I asked myself what the teachers name was because I couldn’t remember and a voice inside myself said Mr. hand. And I could not remember who Mr. hand was. The subconscious is a crazy clever thing
hey👋how are you doing today?
Don't know why but the random "Hey, I know that dude" always kills me. 🤣

He genuinely looks so distraught when he has to leave at the end. Like he really wanted to make the effort.
It's what carries that subplot so well through the movie. Spicoli comes across as a punk wastoid, and he is, but he's a genuinely good guy. Hand comes across as a hardass teacher, and he is, but he's a genuinely good guy too. And in the end, the rivals part as friends.
One my all time favorite movies dude. Reminds me of the 1980s and port Richmond high school
I'd like to see a teacher try to deadbolt a classroom door today, lol
