When *"You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"* was released in 1974, we knew it was supposed to be stuttering. Not jazzy or R&B style of singing. Since Bill Withers *"Ain't No Sunshine"* was a hit only 3 years (1971) earlier. Also huge Country Music singer *Mel Tillis* was big in the 1970's. Had a severe case of speech impediment (stuttering)) that did not effect his singing. He also made fun of it. Once on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Mel took out a small bell & put it on Johnny's desk. When he couldn't get the word out, Mel hit the bell. Then he got the word out. *It was really funny.*
*Burton Cummings (ex-bandmate with singer/Guitarist Randy Bachman with The Guess Who)* did a hilarious cover of *"You Ain't Seen Yet"* on his 1976 solo album titled *"Burton Cummings".* Where he sang this song as one of those lounge singers would *with the stuttering parts.* He did that as a joke also.
Even I have a stuttering problem up till the 1990's. Still have minor (every once in awhile) one today. Back in 1974, it was bad. But I got the joke of this song.

Since then I was able to see BTO in concert about 10 times and I own two drum sticks autographed by Robin Bachman (the drummer). Now, Randy Bachman, Robin Bachman and Blair Thornton (playing the lead guitar on this and many other BTO hits) have gone on to other things while Fred (CF) Turner (bass player) has retired from making music at all. At least I still have those great memories, a set of Robin bachman drum sticks and some other BTO bling Robin was kind enough to send me, as well as my extensive BTO collection on CDs.

His brothers Robbie Bachman (drums), Tim Bachman (guitar, vocals), and Randy Bachman (lead, singer, lead guitarist), added Fred Turner (bass, lead vocas) to form Bachman Turner Overdrive. Randy is also known for founding the band, The Guess Who, which he left in 1970.

The piano in Taking Care of Business by a pizza delivery guy. No Sugar Tonight from crossing the street to avoid a group of scary looking bikers. And Undun is the result of being taught jazz chords by the incredible Lenny Breau

I learned from an interview with Randy Bachman years and years ago that he wanted BTO to be a rhythm based rock band. But I didn't know until very recently that they were sharing a dressing room with the Doobie Brothers in New Orleans during Mardi Gras in the first half of the 1970s when he worked out some of "Let It Ride" and the Doobies then based "Long Train Running" on his guitar noodlings as he ironed it out. That is astonishing and good to know because the Doobies are one of my all time favourite bands! Randy said in that interview eons ago, back in the 1970s IIRC, that he wanted a band that was rhythmically similar to CCR and the Doobies. Killer rhythm was the thing back in the 1970s and is much too absent from today's music. And BTO has so many excellent lead guitar solos! 😉🎸👌
That "70s sound of guitar" comes from there not being many guitar pedals to alter the sound of the guitar at the time. So if you were going to be an excellent guitarist you had to have "touch" in your fingers. There are plenty of good guitar players around today but also way too many that bury the actual tone of their guitars underneath a ton of effects pedals. The really good guitar players around today will tell you to develop your own signature "sound" with your guitar before drifting off into "guitar pedal-land" and obscurity because you just sound like some over processed thing that no one can get next to in their heart and mind.
The lead guitarist in this song was Blair Thornton from Vancouver. 🎸🎸🎸

You are absolutely right in that while it may have started out inspired by Randy Bachman having a little fun with his brother's stuttering the reality is that "Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" really became a style of singing the song. Randy is a gentle guy and not someone who is inclined to mock others so I think he gently used the stutter but it soon morphed into an approach to singing the song which totally worked. I saw Randy perform this song a year or two ago and he still sounds great to this day. Always a religious decent dude who has great talent and very sincere he became one of rock's great songwriters and performers. By the way, I never heard the comparison with Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshine" in terms of both songs being sung in a style but damn you nailed it and I think you got it right--it might have started from a joke but morphed into a style of singing the song! Well done!

Also good is BTO's Takin' Care of Business, Let it Ride and Gimme Your Money Please. Saw a reunion tour of The Guess Who a few years ago. Randy did some BTO songs. It was great. In effect two great bands for the price of one! Randy Bachman also hosts Vinyl Tap on CBC radio. He is a goldmine of rock history with personal experiences!

BTO was one of those underrated bands, that never really got the credit they deserved......they slided a little to the funky side, so they fell in between the rock and funk genre.....love this song, and brings back such positive memories 💝💝💝

When I was 15 my mom, my brother, and I moved to AZ where my father lived (I hadn't known him for long). One day he drove my brother and I to school in his maroon 90's something Thunderbird and they played this song on the radio, followed by "Bad To The Bone". My brother and I knew those songs, and when my father started singing along it was a really cool bonding experience for me, that I remember every time I hear those songs. Unfortunately, he decided to end his life a few months later. There are a few songs that make me think of him, but these 2 in particular make me smile, even after almost 19 years. Anyway that's my connection to this song. =)

You're right. Most people never noticed and just thought it style related at the time. They did some other songs that were traditional-jazz influenced,so it kinda made sense. The backstory came out after it became a big radio hit and then everyone knew. Check "Rock is my life" & "Looking Out For #1".

My favorite memory of when this song was on the charts is driving to school on winter mornings in my 1965 Chevy Impala. The heater was so weak, it didn't kick in good until I was pulling into the parking lot. The song came on the radio almost every morning and my teeth chattered so hard, I could sing along perfectly with no effort at all. Bbbbaby, it was cold!

I had no idea about the stutter story... That's hilarious. I've always loved this song.
But you're right, the stuttering part is what gave it its style. It was the hook and it was a great hook that they happened on accidentally. Btw this band has a lot of great songs, such as "Taking Care of Business," "Rolling Down The Highway," "Let it Ride".

I was 11 or 12 years old when this song came out in the mid-1970s. It got a lot of heavy airplay on the radio. My older brother, Danny, loved this song, and tried to play it on his electric guitar. When I went to school on the school bus, this song was playing constantly on the way to and from school on the school bus radio.

Randy Bachmann. Guitar and vocals. Huge talent. He's the number 2 selling songwriter from Canada. Gordon Lightfoot being number 1. The Guess Who was less hard rock. Randy is an excellent jazz player too. Check out a BTO song called Looking out for number one. I liked these guys in high school. You could be a little overweight and be a rock star. LOL. Let it ride is a great song with great harmonies

Still don't have my computer hooked up. I'm on my phone! But I thought about you tonight, and came to see what you've been listening to lately. You have not disappointed. I'm not gonna suggest anything, because you may have already played it. Hope you have a blessed and happy new year. I'll be back. 😊
