You can't really complain about them not dancing to the beat since they weren't dancing to this song. Considering the time of the performance and the more current song -- this was terrifically synched. Kudos to the editor.

Fred Astaire always did his bet to help his partners look good. He was down to earth, not flashy, considered himself an old-fashioned "hoofer". Frankly, I think his best work was solo, because he could be more inventive & show what he could do without limiting himself to what his partner could match.
Don't get me wrong, I love your reactions, but you have to appreciate the incredible editing, and patience that the producer had to create this video. I can't imagine. I watch this video whenever I spot it because it's really a little work of art.
I highly recommend "Rita Hayworth is Staying Alive". Dance clips from Rita's movies to the BeeGees tune. That was the first vid of this kind that I saw and it is REALLY good.
I have been watching this video for years. I can even count how many times I've seen it. And yes that part when Donald O'Conner, Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly are jumping on couches, it's from the movie Singin' In The Rain, is awesome. The amount of time and effort it took to create this is incredible. It's not just about the editing and the movements going in time to the beat of this song but the creator actually set it up in categories as well. They synced multiple tap dancers, dancing on the tables, dancing in a large group, dancing on the stairs, with the canes, doing the splits, etc. It is by far my favorite video on TH-cam. Good to see people reacting to it.
I am 42 and I was introduced to the Golden Era Hollywood by my grandparents. The Golden Era is still my favorite. Too bad Hollywood has gone down the dumps (with a few exceptions, of course).😀
Old Hollywood used to respect their audience(s). Today's Hollywood only respect themselves, and are only looking for the approval of their peers. Many of these old movies where made at the height of the depression or World War 2. Today, many of us live at the height of world prosperity - but Hollywood only shows contempt for the people and country which created it.
Yes, because you were forced to, by contract. People today don't realize how utterly draconian those studio contracts were. The studio ruled your entire life, you had to do the movies they got for you, and you were basically working all the time, if not on a film then on training and classes.
Dude, lets see YOU put together all of these movie clips from the early 20's on up to about the 50's and match the dance moves to the music as well. I was seriously impressed!

It's true some of the clips are off beat, but that's because they're literally dancing to music pieces with different timing measure signatures and different styles of dance. It's amazing work the way they put it together.
the woman in the top hat who was being flipped over by two lines of male dancers is Eleanor powell . the clip is taken from her dance routine to the song fascinating rhythm. if anyone here hasn't watched that then I strongly recommend it. she is a fantastic dancer.

Seriously, keep them with the beat of this song? This person has culled videos from different eras and meshed it with a modern song. The sheer talent and patient necessary to do that is incredible. No one expects it to be perfectly meshed to the beat. Sorry, it took you out, but that's a monumental feat.
The gentleman that was coming down the stairs, was the great James Cagney. He was a remarkable actor and dancer. Who took his career into his own hands, which was unheard of back in those days. You were owned by the studios. And he refused to me owned.

I remember watching some of those old musicals with my momma when I was a little girl. And Shirley Temple was my favorite. She danced with some wonderful dancers. Love tap dancing. @Vicki Lee I think what he meant was the dancing didn’t sync perfectly with the beat of the song. It doesn’t matter, the dancing was perfectly on beat with the original songs. I was thrilled to see Fred Astaire so heavily featured, he's one of my all time favorites. 💕
Sorry guy, usually love your reaction when you discover new stuff that you like but you need to realize the incredible effort that someone made to just make this video. Most of those clips were from the 1930's and 40's. Tremendous job just to get it synched. So some weren't perfect to the beat.
Actually it looked like some were from the 50s also. That means there was almost thirty years of movies to choose from and musicals were very popular during that time so there was no shortage of clips to chose from. The hardest part would be deciding which clips to use and finding digital copies. Or maybe just finding digital copies of movie and then just picking from those. That and waiting for it to render. With the software, clipping fractions of a second here or there to fit in clips is not that hard. And the creator gets to decide which change ups to highlight with which clips. I'm sure this didn't take long after getting enough dance clips to cover four minutes. I'd be surprised if they took an hour doing the editing.
Most of these people were dead long before Uptown Funk was even a thought. What fun. Tough editing job using old film from many eras. It’s one of those things you just enjoy!!

You should look them up to see the full performance. That may be the greatest dance scene ever filmed.

The black guy dancing on stairway with Shirley Temple was Bill Robinson. Otherwise known as “Bojangles” A lot of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire on there. I think I seen bing crosby and Danny Kaye. Used to watch these with my mom. Movies were so good back then.

Yeah, Fred Astaire was fabulous. One of the early moguls described him by saying, "Dances a little, can't sing," or something like that. Guess whose name is remembered.
Those old movie star/dancers like Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly and especially Shirley Temple, remind me of watching those OLD movies with my mom. She really loved dancing. Even as a teenager, when my friends would come over, she would dance with them. They loved her for it...
There's a story I heard about Gene Kelly having the flue during the famous dance scene from "singing in the rain", with a high fever and still pulled out one of the greatest dance sequences in history.

Got it. You're so right. My dad was a ballroom dance instructor and I learned how to dance by standing on his feet when I was very very young. He said to be able to dance well, you have to feel the music.

Did you recognize the blonde woman between the two men jumping on the sofa? This was from the wonderful movie "Singing in the Rain." The woman was singer, actress Debbie Reynolds, mother of Carrie Fisher (Star Wars). Their devotion was so strong, they died within a day of each other.
Those guys jumping were the Nicholas Brothers - two of the greatest dancers in history. It's worth looking them up and watching that whole routine. The fact that it's done to Cab Caloway's orchestra just makes it that much better.
What a great video, timing just right, and the the last three guys, jumping down and doing the splits... then getting up and continue to dance. Wow, I could not even imagine how wrong that could have gone!

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor were the ones who did the sofa scene, and the one dancing with the cartoon mouse was Gene Kelly. The little girl dancing with Bill Bojangles Robinson was indeed Shirley Temple. Many of those were well before the 60s. Some were in the 30s or the 40s. Great discovery; great job!
Yes, I love this video and I also couldn't believe those two not only doing the splits down the stairs but then off the balcony! An interesting thing about Shirley Temple and Bo Jangles in that there were those in the studio (back in those days) who didn't think she should hold a black man's hand and from what i understand, she pretty much demanded that she was going to hold his hand and that was that. There are some great dancing sequences with the two of them that have gone down in history.
the story I heard was that movies like this where there were black performers were shot so that the scenes with black performers could be edited out of the movie any it wouldn't effect the flow of the movie. YMMV

Bojangles (seen dancing w/ shirley temple) choreographed hundreds of dancers & movie films. Shirley Temple movie moguls hired Bojangles 2 teach her. The studios had 2 beg him 2 b in the movies. He liked shirley & she liked him that's why he is in so many temple movies. They r said 2 have had fun dancing when not filming ....how's that 4 watching TCM 4 a year!
a little Hollywood trivia - starting at the 3:17 mark here features a scene from "Singing in the Rain" with the lady and 2 men dancing, rolling, jumping over the sofa/couches. That lady is a young Debbie Reynolds in her 1st film as a main female lead character. A few years later, she has a daughter named Carrie Fisher, who would grow up to play Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. :-)

That was fun!!! If you take out the technical stuff it was great to watch. FYI this came out when my daughter was in seventh grade so being the silly Mama that I was I came up up a white Mama car Dance to do while driving. So you can imagine just how GREAT it was! LOL 🤣. My daughter said" PLEASE don't do that if any of the kids I go to school with can see!". If she got in the car with an attitude I would threatened to do that dance where everyone could see. It worked everytime!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The little girl, Shirley Temple and the black man did MANY movies together. She later became an American Ambassador.
The black guy dancing on stairway with Shirley Temple was Bill Robinson. Otherwise known as “Bojangles” A lot of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire on there. I think I seen bing crosby and Danny Kaye. Used to watch these with my mom. Movies were so good back then.

Awesome video. Loved this one. Fred Astaire is in most of the clips. He was a Great dancer/singer/ actor. He's the one that got me started on watching old movies when I was a teen. :)
Yeah, Fred Astaire was fabulous. One of the early moguls described him by saying, "Dances a little, can't sing," or something like that. Guess whose name is remembered.

Those old movie star/dancers like Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly and especially Shirley Temple, remind me of watching those OLD movies with my mom. She really loved dancing. Even as a teenager, when my friends would come over, she would dance with them. They loved her for it...

There's a story I heard about Gene Kelly having the flue during the famous dance scene from "singing in the rain", with a high fever and still pulled out one of the greatest dance sequences in history.
That is true..he had pneumonia..100 degree lights and constant water on him..he was really I'll when he did that dance sequence
Definitely no 60s, 70s or 80s in that video, 30s and 40's, possibly early 50s.

The one at the end they are referring to is the before and now clip of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire shaking hands. The ‘now’ being 1976

Got it. You're so right. My dad was a ballroom dance instructor and I learned how to dance by standing on his feet when I was very very young. He said to be able to dance well, you have to feel the music.

Did you recognize the blonde woman between the two men jumping on the sofa? This was from the wonderful movie "Singing in the Rain." The woman was singer, actress Debbie Reynolds, mother of Carrie Fisher (Star Wars). Their devotion was so strong, they died within a day of each other.
Those guys jumping were the Nicholas Brothers - two of the greatest dancers in history. It's worth looking them up and watching that whole routine. The fact that it's done to Cab Caloway's orchestra just makes it that much better.

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor were the ones who did the sofa scene, and the one dancing with the cartoon mouse was Gene Kelly.
The little girl dancing with Bill Bojangles Robinson was indeed Shirley Temple.
Many of those were well before the 60s. Some were in the 30s or the 40s.

Yes, I love this video and I also couldn't believe those two not only doing the splits down the stairs but then off the balcony! An interesting thing about Shirley Temple and Bo Jangles in that there were those in the studio (back in those days) who didn't think she should hold a black man's hand and from what i understand, she pretty much demanded that she was going to hold his hand and that was that. There are some great dancing sequences with the two of them that have gone down in history.

the story I heard was that movies like this where there were black performers were shot so that the scenes with black performers could be edited out of the movie any it wouldn't effect the flow of the movie. YMMV

Bojangles (seen dancing w/ shirley temple) choreographed hundreds of dancers & movie films. Shirley Temple movie moguls hired Bojangles 2 teach her. The studios had 2 beg him 2 b in the movies. He liked shirley & she liked him that's why he is in so many temple movies. They r said 2 have had fun dancing when not filming ....how's that 4 watching TCM 4 a year!

a little Hollywood trivia - starting at the 3:17 mark here features a scene from "Singing in the Rain" with the lady and 2 men dancing, rolling, jumping over the sofa/couches. That lady is a young Debbie Reynolds in her 1st film as a main female lead character. A few years later, she has a daughter named Carrie Fisher, who would grow up to play Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. :-)

That was fun!!! If you take out the technical stuff it was great to watch. FYI this came out when my daughter was in seventh grade so being the silly Mama that I was I came up up a white Mama car Dance to do while driving. So you can imagine just how GREAT it was! LOL 🤣. My daughter said" PLEASE don't do that if any of the kids I go to school with can see!". If she got in the car with an attitude I would threatened to do that dance where everyone could see. It worked everytime!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly are two of my favourite dancers of all time!!. Glad they included Judy Garland, the Nicholas brothers, Ginger Rogers, Eleanor Powell, sooo many wonderful dancers, way too many too list.
