Early 80s I was at a club in downtown Vancouver BC on a Tuesday night. There was some girl band playing and they weren't very good. I was about to call it a night and a guy gets up on stage and starts singing. Everyone was mesmerized on the dance floor. Turns out it was Dan McCafferty, lead singer of Nazareth.
I worked security on a concert tour of Western Canada with Nazareth in 1987. These gentlemen are some of the coolest, most intelligent and fun people I have ever met. And yes, they can ROCK!!!
it was a cover of a joni mitchell song.. I didn't know that for many years, but after hearing it I can't believe they made a completely different sounding song. I Love Nazareth's one, but not a fan of the original.
True story. Naz were huge Joni Mitchell fans and met her when she was touring in the UK. They played her their cover of This Flight Tonight and asked her opinion of it. The following week she played a huge gig in London. She walked onto the stage and told the audience, "I'd like to open tonight with a Nazareth song."
RIP Dan McCafferty (lead singer) and Manny Charlton (lead guitarist) who both passed away recently (Dan in November and Manny in July). Nazareth formed in 1968 and have been performing and recording since then. Dan's singing was inspired by primarily Little Richard. He went on to create his own screaming, raspy sound that inspired numerous 70s and 80s bands, including giants like AC/DC and Guns N Roses. Listen to Dan shred on uptempo rockers like This Flight Tonight, Bad Bad Boy, Telegram, and don't miss the timeless rock ballad Dream On. Long live Rock N Roll!!!!
This was their song that got me into their catalog back in the '70s via the old Columbia House record club. How many of you guys remember that old mail-order album company?
I sure remember Columbia House I got ordered twice from them two times and guess what I never paid I got this like the 12 or whatever you know for a penny or something and then I'm supposed to buy the more I never bought the more and I did it twice hell I was just thirteen what the fuk was like
I woke up to 8 inches of snow! So I did my chores and then sat to listen to some Dr. Hook, a couple of videos in I saw you reacting to Dr Hook videos. I immediately picked your videos. I love watching you hear this music for the first time. When this video popped up on the side and I saw you scratching your head I knew exactly what part of the song it was, so I clicked to watch and was not disappointed.
Love Nazareths music. Got to see them in concert in 83. So many great songs. Dan has a unique raspy voice. Please do more. This Flight Tonight, Expect No Mercy, Kentucky Fried Blues. I could go on and on.
yeah, I have been through some very difficult times after a break up of someone I fell for and they tore my heart out. the lead is so simple yet, rips you to pieces. and yeah I have cried many tears when I would hear that lead.
I first heard this done by the Everly Brothers when I was a little kid and I liked it, but Nazareth changed it to a completely different song and I think they own it!!
Your reaction channel is by far the best. You allow the song to play, uninterrupted, and then comment on it. Most of the other channels are so frustrating as they will interrupt right when the song is hitting a peak, just to make some comment that they could have made after the video. Thanks for doing it correctly!
One of my ALL time favorite bands!! The singer Dan McCafferty...one of the best voices in Rock....just released a new album..he is now well into his 70's and can still belt out a heavy rocker or sing a beautiful ballad! I hope that you look into some more Nazareth..they have a wide range of songs...A good classic rocker in "MORNING DEW"
@@manomyth11 Yes, I remember hearing about it the day he passed. It was a sad day for sure. My original post was from 3 years ago and I did not suspect that he would be taken so soon.
An old favorite of mine. This is one of those songs that when it comes on the car radio as you're about to pull in the driveway, you take a few trips around the block so you can hear the whole thing. And all these years, I had no idea it was a cover!
Good day MRM! I'm a child of God that was blessed to be born in the 60's! I absolutely love this song! I'm so glad that you react to a wide range of MUSIC 🎶! Especially the OLDIES! May the Lord continue to bless you and your family!!
I was only 7 years old when this song got my attention. This song simply reflects a emotional difficulty in a broken relationship. This how some can see and feel about it. Dan McCaffery (Lead singer) has a new song :Tell me. And this song he convey a new understanding about love
Written by Georgia native, Boudleaux Bryant. He also wrote the Everly Brothers hit, "All I Have To Dream". He and his wife Felice also wrote "Bye Bye Love" and "Wake Up Little Susie"
Holy-snapping-duckspit YES!! One of my absolute favourites, also my fave version of this song (they really made it their own, not just a copy). Love Dan's voice. Nazareth had so so SO many great songs, along with this one my very faves are I Want to do Everything for You, Bad Bad Boy & Holy Roller.
This version was big when I was in high school in the 70s. There's also a good cover of it by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, recorded shortly before Parsons' death. I saw Nazareth live in 1993, and lead vocalist Dan McCafferty could still scream his lungs out, but he was also like the genial host of a little Scottish pub, leading the audience in a singalong to Hair Of The Dog.
I know right, but I think it was because they were ahead of the times, & from what I heard, would not compromise their artistic integrity !!! Loved them in the 70's, and still love then now!!!
Great video reaction. Back in the day eg the 50s 60s 70s even the 80s there was so many great songs writers who managed to right so many great songs with so much inspiration but with todays music all the magic has gone and has been lost 😢😒😔
Lol Ty: "iits always a unique thing to me when guys sing in that high range"... Proceeds to sing in a high range! :-) I love this version Nazareth sings, grew up on this music! Love your reaction! Blessings & love!!
The couple who wrote this song, Felice and Bondleaux Bryant, also wrote "Rocky Top" the University of Tennessee fight song, "Bye Bye Love" and "All I have to do is dream" by the Everly Brothers and "You're the Reason God made Oklahoma" by David Frizzell and Shelly West.
This was my favorite song when I was 12. 41 years ago. Man, I'm gettin old. lol!! Still love the song. Pop the CD in quite often (Hair of the Dog). The whole CD's good. But this song..... The memories attached.....♥️♥️♥️
They used to have one song Three different gropes at the same time. This song had a few different reincarnations over the years. There are other versions out there `Nazareth, 1976 Everly Brothers 1960 Roy Orbison, Emmylou Harris & Gram Parsons, Jennifer Warnes, Cher, Rod Stewart, The Osborne Brothers all recorded it. If you Ask me Nazareth owns it.
Now this brings back memories of going cruising with my boyfriend as well as slow skating with him to this. Great song, great melody, puts you in a mellow mood. Great pick💕
Roy Orbison covered "Love Hurts" in 1961 and issued it as the B-side to "Running Scared." While "Running Scared" was an international hit, the B-side only picked up significant airplay in Australia. Consequently, chart figures for Australia show "Running Scared"/"Love Hurts" as a double A-Side, both sides peaking at No. 5. This makes Orbison's recording of "Love Hurts" the first version to be a hit.
Awesome sauce 👍. This came out when I was 6.....sad part is for decades I didn't understand words (he wasn't so clear with his words ) but doggone I sang it anyways 😁. Never heard any other versions 🤔
What a great song..gosh so many memories hearing this again..long hot days when young and time seemed endless..Great vocal so much feeling in it and wow that hair..5 cans of hairspray now we know why the Ozone layer is thin 😄.TY as always Keep Well Keep Strong My friend
I imagine others have let you know this, but a quick scan of the comments didn't show any, but - both Nazareth and well before them The Everly Brothers were doing a Roy Orbison song when they recorded 'Love Hurts', and while they're both fine covers, Roy Orbison simply had one of the most stunning voices in all of Rock history and was massively admired by musicians well after his prime. There are several of his old (early/mid 60s) radio hits that are stand-out classics, including 'Crying', 'Only The Lonely', 'Oh, Pretty Woman'.
Song was First recorded by the Everly Brothers in the 60's. Cher covered Love Hurts in the 90's. Her [Official Music Video] has one of her young boyfriends in it at that time. Rob Camilletti aka "Bagel Boy" that's a story by itself . I love all 3 versions.
@@sarahkinsey5434 That's right Roy did cover it. Come to think of it, so did Joan Jett. Good songs get covered a lot. It's like Big Joe William's song "Baby Please Don't Go" has been covered since the 30.s
This is part of the soundtrack of my middle school years. Oh the first time your heart gets broken by your first crush....Nazareth were the only ones who understood you.

Dan's voice is SO good in this song. I love it. Another of Nazareth's songs that i really like is " This Flight Tonight"

The Nazareth version of this great tune is incredible.
Best version i think of LOVE HURTS. My favorite song as a little kid..guitar solo is my favorite
Yeah, that guitar solo is ideal. No need to take away or add a single note.
I totally agree with you Wendy! The contrast of Dan's raspy voice with the heartfelt lyrics is just - well...perfect!
yeah, I have been through some very difficult times after a break up of someone I fell for and they tore my heart out.
the lead is so simple yet, rips you to pieces. and yeah I have cried many tears when I would hear that lead.
I so agree Wendy! The guitar solo has such a melancholy sound that fits the song perfectly. Absolutely Love it!
I first heard this done by the Everly Brothers when I was a little kid and I liked it, but Nazareth changed it to a completely different song and I think they own it!!
Probably one of my favorite songs of all time. Love, love, love it.
He put so much emotion into this song that you can feel his hurt. I'm going to guess that if taken a vote, this would be the #1 break-up song ever.
