Great video. It would be wonderful if you could release the entire interview with Roy. I think all us Viper owners would love to hear the full interview.
When I was a kid, the dodge viper always has a spot in my heart, such a badass man's car, no abs, no TCS, no electronic driving diaper, just to embrace that if you suck driving it's the fault on the driver not the car.
Here in Australian production car racing back in the 2000s the great drivers loved the car, and the not so great or overly aggressive drivers hated it for this reason lol
fell in love with it when I was a kid playing GT1. Every time I started a new game, I always did the same: buy a used Del Sol, run with it until I had the money for a RT/10, and then proceed to oversteer in every race afterwards lol kid me was still loving the thing to bits though, what a looker!
That car is so iconic. A friend of mine used to have a one like that in Poland a few years back. in Poland! It looked even more extreme and bizzare. Also I was thinking. Could you maybe upload someday a POV video of you just driving the viper through an interesting road? Like a longer version of that redbull snippets ;)
As a euro guy: I looove the Viper. Honestly, one of the best looking and proportioned cars of all time. And you know what? That's the great thing about creations from different parts of the world, the unique design language and approach from each region make the car culture special. With that said, fuck the haters.
Im 42 Raced a lot of fast cars. To this day nothing scared me more then the first gen viper, zero assists, torque that exploded the rear tires at any rpm. Its the only car i have ever driven where the whole time you have to focus. Ive driven newer gt500s where i can drive fast with ease. Theres is so few on the road because of this. Awesome Car If you have balls of lead.
I was 9 when the prototype came out and here in Australia, a small amount of cars came over and got converted to RHD by HSV. I missed driving an RT/10 Gen 1 in LA in January because of the rain... so watching this has brought a middle aged Viper fan a load of memories flooding back. Thank you.
worked on a 97 GTS for a while , raced it too did 11.7 quarter with headers no cats. love the bare bones design of this car that you describe at the end.

He needs to upload more regularly, but he has a full time real job I’m sure and quality takes time. I also appreciate the editing done here to make the video so accessibly short, although I’m sure many of us wouldn’t mind if it was much longer and more detailed!
I'm from the UK and know fine well Vipers were designed to handle 👍, people also make fun of how you can get the same peak power out of a turbo 4 cylinder, seemingly unaware how in a street car powerband, torque, and response are a massive factor in how it actually feels to drive.
They also forget how heavy most those turbo 4s and i6s are. They often weigh more than an LS v8 and not much less than a single cam v10 which has a much much higher tuning capability.
Big displacement V engines just hit different. They are way more rewarding to drive than a 2.0 turbo 4 pot. I’d take another Holden over an A45 or S3 any day.

Im really glad I found your channel. The quality is on par with Auto magazines and pros, but you lack their prideful personas that can be so labourious! As far as appearance- that viper is among the greats. They combined Muscle with Class so well.
You literally read my mind with every word and showed me exactly what I wanted to see or hear every time. Mentions the NSX...NSX rev...Mentions the Z1...awesome footage of the Z1 in factory! Brilliant.
I've owned gen 2 GTS's for decades and even I learned something today (about the source of the headlights and the lack of cup holder)! And having raced these cars, THANK YOU FOR CLEARING THE AIR ABOUT THE HANDLING! I've said the same thing for years about the excellent handling and the yoyo's wrecking them mostly because of the huge torque... There's nothing wrong with the cars, it's the drivers of the time only being use to 100 ft/lbs of torque and not being able to drive, especially without nannies!
It always amazes me how people ignore the landscape as it was when a vehicle first launched. The viper, the various corvettes, the original 1990 300 ZX, and just about every muscle-car from the 60s/70s were amazing performers. But to hear tell of their performance now, you'd think they were the worst cars ever made. Love to the Viper!
Once again another excellent video from you. I'm solely invested in the viper just because of you - yet I've never had the opportunity to see one in my life. I'm already keen for your next video!
He's too inconsistent, he has videos with millions and millions of views but onl post them out every few months.... Probably has a good career and not worried about TH-cam tho lol

Please make more like this! A series on you talking to the engineers and designers behind some of the icons of the automotive world would be awesome. Well done
Great job as always. Thanks for re-visiting the poor handling myth. I have wanted a viper since I saw my first RT-10 in 1993. Now that I can afford one the Gen 5's are becoming too expensive so I'm looking hard at Gen 2's but was worried that they are more prone to spinning without traction control. You are helping me understand that I can keep it between the lines if I respect its abilities and get my foot out of it when it tells me too. That plus keeping fresh rubber on it and I should be fine.
We lost a lot of SRT-4s in the early days for the same reason. People not respecting what the car could do and driving beyond their abilities. When you're only charging $20k MSRP for the second fastest production Chrysler at the time, you get lot of... uneducated... people behind the wheel. The Gen1 and Gen2 Vipers were equivalently cheap for what they can do.
Great video! I wish you had mentioned the Dodge (aka Chrysler) took the Viper to Europe and entered the FIA -GT2 series in 1996 and by 1998 the Chrysler Viper was winning all but one race in the series totally walking over the best the Europeans could offer. This dominance continued for the better part of a decade. The Viper had several class win at the 24 hours of Le Mans and also Daytona, In 2000 the Dodge Viper was the overall winner of the 24 hour race at Daytona passing the struggling to prototype car late Sunday morning. Here is a reference to how the Viper stomped on the best the Europeans could offer in their own racing series. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Viper_GTS-R
You can say Thankyou to Team Oreca for that as they were the ones that made the viper competitive. At the same time Porsche decides to stop factory support in 96 for the 993 GT2 Evo in focus for the semi failed GT1 911 to compete with the dominating McLaren F1. Which by the way the GT2 and viper was the original competition but the McLaren was so advanced that's how the GT1 and GT2 category split....... In IMSA the GT2 Evo had more success against the American vipers were not campaigned by Oreca...... But originally The vipers were terrible during the Bpr series but Oreca did so much development each year......
Jeremy Clarkson said one of the nicest things about Viper too. He said that all supercars after testing and filming for an episode of Top Gear would typically break down (on some occasions even during filming). Viper on the other had took extreme abuse, and the day after they finished filming, it started up and was good to go like nothing happened.
Bit of a stretch. A Viper team managed by the French, engineered by the English, with all European drivers. Also wouldn't exactly call it dominating European cars, considering it couldn't compete in GT1 and had to go up against their 2nd best offerings.
Nice history. Damn, I'm 41 and didn't even think that the viper was out in the 1980's. Crazy!! With Hellcats, Camaros and GT's all the rage.....The Viper needs a comeback.

I have never stumbled across your channel until today. When I read the title of your video, I feared the worst! I am not going to lie, when I read it, I thought no way is this guy going to expand my knowledge of anything Dodge Viper! I've owned over 20 Gen 1, 2, & 3 Vipers throughout the years and used to be pretty involved with the Viper Community. I've done the tours and heard all the Bob Lutz, Tom Gale, Roy Sjoberg, Lee Iacocca, Carrol Shelby, and Dick Winkles stories. From the involvement of Lamborghini Right down to the double bubble top design taken from the Shelby Daytona designed by Pete Brock. The first thing that popped into my head was, if any of the old Viper Alley Members from back in the day, stumble upon this they will have a field day because, with that title, this guy is setting himself up for a barrage of sarcasm. To be honest I only watched the video to prepare myself to read the commments! At the 25-second mark, you grabbed my attention with the funny clip but then blew me away with the fact that you sought out Roy Sjoberg and had actual clips of Roy telling you in his own words how the headlights came to be and the reason Iacocca did put cupholders in the car, two facts that I never knew! That alone is information that can now be added to yhe archives. Like you said only a handful of people may have known and likely would die with Roy when that time occurs. This may have never been shared with the public had you not had the initiative to ask. Thank you so much for this info and Video. This and the C4 ZR1 were legendary in performance, but nobody bought them, European sports car enthusiasts hated the cheap construction, and American buyers were happy with base Corvettes. Also a year later, the NSX came out, which wasn't as fast, but it was comfortable, tame, dailyable, compared to these beasts, while being similarly affordable. Nowadays though, more enthusiasts are starting to realize and appreciate how brutal, focused and pure these cars are.
Dodge Viper was THE dream car for me as a kid. Looked awesome, sounded awesome, was fast in Gran Turismo. All of those points still stand to this day. What a beast!
First of all, great video. A few tidbits of info. CAGS was introduced in the Corvette in the late 80s to make you skip gears. When it came to racing, the F355 and the NSX being lighter cars, would hang back and watch all the American cars thrash it out and then near the end of the race, apply pressure in their well rested cars with not destroyed tires. Many a Viper spun off the track as their tires let go and these guys would drive on by. I don't have a Corvette, a Ferrari or an NSX, I just watched the races. The late 80s and early 90s was a great time to be into cars. There was a lot going on from every manufacturer.
Please don’t stop making content like this. This is the best Viper content on TH-cam. I would love if you could do this with the Gen III at some point!
Since my older brothet and i bought a Viper GTS in GranTurismo 1, i absolutely admire this car. It's my all time favorite car for all it stands for and the GTS is the most beautifully designed car ever. Thank you so much for your videos of your GTS and specially for this one. We need more videos from you! I rewatched all your videos more than 10 times, so was excited to see the new content!
Great video! Gen 1 owner here in the Detroit area. Guys who worked on the program still live in the area and always approach to say hello when they see anyone out in a Viper and I've been lucky enough to meet several.
Forever a viper fan, dads got a 92 that hes owned since 93, and had a 96 gts sold it back in the day. Grew up in those things and still drive the 92 to this day. Best car ever made, cant wait to get my hands on a 93 or 94 viper as well as a 5th gen viper in my future collection
Incredible video. Roy is a legend
Great production quality on the video, incredible you were able to speak with the chief engineer of the project, looking forward to your next video!
Dodge Viper was THE dream car for me as a kid. Looked awesome, sounded awesome, was fast in Gran Turismo. All of those points still stand to this day. What a beast!
I always found Gran Turismo so biased for Jap cars performance wise, still a great game along with Forza.
Your vid’s are great! They have inspired me to start upgrading my own project car.
This video is one of the best seen so far. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing these stories! Interviews like this are what make this platform special. This is now on the internet for posterity
This channel is always worth the wait
Excellent video. Cant believe the quality of every video we get from you. Keep up the good work!
This video is AWESOME, I never knew how well the handled. Major props for being able to handle this car and drive it like it’s meant to be driven!
Just found this video. Its the best. I love the Viper even more now. Thank you!
This was a wonderfully produced video! And, I’ve finally learned why the headlight bubble level is on the car! Great work!
Pristine video man! Keep up the good work, id love to watch many more, cant get enough!!!
So cool hearing Roy speak on the development, what a great video! And wow, that silver BMW 507 at the end has me drooling...
Thank you for making this and Roy for the insider insight. He and his team built a legend.
This is really is a good channel to watch! Keep up the good work my guy.
Your Dodge Viper is sweet! The GTS is my dream car and I hope to own one one day. Well done! Subscribed.
This was a brilliant look at a classic. Well done man!
It's insane how good it stood up against the other supercars, but all people know is that "it's dangerous and prehistoric technique".
Fantastic video. Love your work. Also.. Thank you, Roy!
I too thought that this is one of the best car videos I have seen. Thank You for going the extra mile on all this cool info !
Just subscribed. Man, this is top-notch content, thanks for creating it and sharing with us!
