The song title sounds familiar because y’all did “Burn the Witch” by Queens of the Stone Age, which sounds completely different. My first Patreon request 🙌🏼
The animation is from one of my favourite shows as a child. I recognise some of the characters (Windy Miller is the straw chewing floppy hatted drunkard). There were three different shows based in the same fictional county (Trumpton, Chiggly and Camberwick Green). The Giant wicker man is not from "burning man" but from the original Edward Woodward version of "The Wicker Man" (not to be confused with the terrible Nicholas Cage remake).
The library of music videos they have is so good. Codex ,Reckoner(live from the basement) and Jigsaw falling into place would be great RH videos to do next.
The very British cultural references are strong in this video. The animation is designed to be similar to the Trumptonshire children's programmes made in the late 1960s and played continually on the BBC so most children would know it. Here is an episode from the first series called "Camberwick Green" th-cam.com/video/srtvmGUMWWs/w-d-xo.html Mixed with the classic 1973 British horror film "The Wicker Man" which climaxes with the sacrifice scene: th-cam.com/video/GRKaAiBy-Go/w-d-xo.html Mixing those genres is very creepy.
Yeah I love all these sources being pulled together. What a mix! I remember them all from childhood. When I saw my favourite band put all this together on release I was delighted.
This is modern Radiohead from their last 2016 album "A Moon Shaped Pool". This and "Daydreaming' are my favourites from this album. My take is its about the growth of polarisation and burn anyone who disagrees with your tribe. Maybe the man escapes because he is the authority figure and there is a similar end to the "Karma Police" video 20 years earlier when the oppressed man set the chasing car alight only for it to be empty. Hopefully you recall now you recently reacted to the classic "Just" where everyone in the video ended up on the floor. If you want to vibe to a song with just a lyrics video "Pyramid Song" is an atmospheric masterpiece
I love this video! And the song obviously.. Jonny’s strings taken to new levels within the Radiohead machine. I remember the kid’s programme Trumpton and love The Wicker Man. When I saw my favourite band pulling from these 2 sources it was so cool.
I like to think that they got the ‘if you float, you burn’ line from the ‘burn the witch’ scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Maybe not (I get what it’s referencing), but this is what I like to believe 😆
Hahaaaa you gotta love it and especially close tko the end the way it gets faster and the violin or actually Johnny's guitar that he's using as a violin lol getting darker while tlhe witch guy is like yayyyy ima gonna burn lol i live it and the whole song us awesome ❤
The Moon Shaped Pool album is amazing, check out The Numbers, Daydreaming and Identikit, load of other greats on it, but i guess these are my favourites for atmosphere.
They aimed this song at the oncoming backlash to the yet-to-materialize immigrant crisis (the song was released in 2016)... this sentiment took hold in Europe after the influx of immigrants in this time... the scapegoating of all society's ills onto immigrants has led to a right-wing resurgence in Europe... and this rhymes with history for witch hunts in olden times... a lesson for all of us as we have been descending into madness in the years since
other Radiohead musts: Lucky, The Tourist (maybe back to back, two last songs in OK Computer), Pyramid Song, Nude, and The Present Tense. just to name a few
Davey and goliath (70s claymation) meets wickerman meets witch general (Vincent price). Two officials that go house to house either collecting taxes or investigating witch charges
It’s based on the film The Wicker Man - the great British folk horror 70’s film with Ed Woodward and Christopher Lee. Again, they are similar sources but Radiohead definitely made The Wicker Man in Trumpton style.
At the time this song was written Europe was constantly being attacked by terrorists and large parts of Europe were turning right-wing and nationalistic in response. In the UK a lot of scummy gutter tabloid newspapers were targeting and stereoptyping minorities but mainly Muslims and really pushing this narrative that all imigrants and asylum seekers were in fact terrorists. This song is about the dangers of that, finger pointing, 'loose talk around tables', singling people out, witch hunting, being part of the crowd that does the lynching, because if your not careful and do what the popular 'in thing' is you will be the one hunted..
This is exactly it. The most notable lines for me are 'Avoid all eye contact. Do not, react.' Its that sense of... if you want to survive in an extremist environment, mind your business. In the end the inspector is the one who they attempt to kill, because he is a threat to their way of life ie. persecution. The overall message is that the government inspector sees all the warning signs, but despite being shocked by everything he sees, ignores every red flag, despite the fact they get progressively more shocking to him. They also twist the knife with the hypocrisy of what are clearly migrant workers picking fruit as the townspeople are unwilling to do it for themselves. Then by the end, his failure to address the dangers ends up with the inspector becoming one of the 'others' and they burn him (although not for to make it slightly less dark)
This is a truly excellent song, and depressingly more relevant now than it ever was - and even maybe more relevant in the US in 2024. Most notable lines for me are 'Avoid all eye contact. Do not, react.' Its that sense of... if you want to survive in an extreme politically charged environment, best to mind your business. In the end the inspector is the one who they attempt to kill, because he is a threat to their way of life ie. persecution of 'others' without any accountability. The government inspector sees all the warning signs, but despite being shocked by everything he sees, ignores every red flag, despite them becoming progressively more shocking to him. They also twist the knife with the hypocrisy of what are clearly migrant workers picking fruit as the townspeople are unwilling to do it for themselves. Then by the end, his failure to leave and report the dangers very clearly happening here, ends up with the inspector becoming one of the 'others' and they burn him (although not to make it slightly less dark)
there is a juxtaposition in the songs lyrics between the burning of witches in the middle ages & what we do now to ostracize people on the internet (particularly in social media). This is why in 1 verse Thom Yorke sings the line "sing a song of sixpence" (which is a medieval nursery rhyme) & "sing a song on the jukebox" . The whole song is refering to what psychologists call 'moral panic'. I f you want to know more about what 'moral panic' is, this scene from the show 'Legion' explains it brilliantly : th-cam.com/video/pwQqOdfc7pw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=kript96
You will not be disappointed. There is a Danish rap number called: > Djämes Braun - Fugle (Official Music Video) < You absolutely should see. Ohhh thats why it sounded familiar. This was a good one Linda, again thank you for you love and support on Patreon!!!

God the remake was awful and they had such good material to work with.
Spot on. I loved all these sources being pulled together when I saw this on release. Still do!
Trumpton.
Chigley.
Camberwick Green.
@@jameshannagan4256 "Not the bees!"
Not Burning Man, but the Wicker Man... The outsider is being sacrificed for the harvest. 🤘
Not the Bees!!!!😂
Exactly
Come, it's time to keep your appointment with the wickerman.
I like how Smokey slowly notices things are a little bit off 😂
The library of music videos they have is so good. Codex ,Reckoner(live from the basement) and Jigsaw falling into place would be great RH videos to do next.
Man, we need another RH album. Been 8 years since this song and A Moon Shaped Pool came out. 😢
At least we have The Smile though.
The Smile is booty tho…
The smile is just Thom and Johnny. I’m starting to dig them. They are in their 50’s now …
They keep releasing masterpieces. Their age is irrelevant
@@leehiro4840 absolutely they are not media favourites but they are definitely elite.
It’s actually criminal it’s been that long since Radiohead have played together. We need it.

This is one of the best reactions I've seen you do. Just watching you two get lost in the song. Love it

The style was directly pulled from the British kids programme Trumpton - but it is a similar style of claymation.
It’s based on the film The Wicker Man - the great British folk horror 70’s film with Ed Woodward and Christopher Lee.
Again, they are similar sources but Radiohead definitely made The Wicker Man in Trumpton style.
@kirkwarburton2277 remake wasn't as good. Going to houses reminds me of witch general with Vincent price and similar clothing attire
The remake is struck from my memory! For good reason!
Yes, it does pull from more influences, nursery rhymes and historical events etc..
Radiohead rules!🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊
This song got me into Radiohead in middle school

It's a tribute to the Wicker Man, which is a horror movie in which a tribute is burned to the harvest gods (or something)... :)
You gotta check out Radiohead’s song “Nude” from their In Rainbows album. It’s my favorite Radiohead song ever!
Oh yeah! I totally forgot about this song, and then forgot the name of it and so couldn't look it up. Nice!
