Burn the Witch is a grower. The more you listen to it the more you hear. I’d suggest A Wolf at the Door. A superb closer plus it’s epic live too especially with Thom prowling the stage whilst ranting!
I'll give you this. Your reactions are not fake. However, it's a bit hard to have these songs that many of us love so much to be so poorly received. I share the sentiments with your dad. If the future of music is going in the direction of Imagine Dragons, help us all!!
I am 16 years old, and have multiple friends that love radiohead and other bands as much as me, maybe because we are musicians, but at least there's some of us...
"Burn the Witch" is a great song. One of my favorites off of "Moon Shaped Pool". I'd love to see some songs not in the studio albums. Songs like "lift", "Man of War", "Polyethylene", "Talk Show Host", "Gagging Order", etc. Some of these singles and B-sides are even better than a bunch of the songs on the studio albums in my opinion. Even "In Rainbows Disk 2" has some good songs that we all can appreciate.
I Love the Penderecki-style strings on this one. The typical loud chorus is not sth commonly found in Radiohead's post the bends discography. IMO it's for the better. The amount of tension they were able to build up in burn the witch without complying with this age-old convention is a good example why.
It's interesting. I grew up listening to albums and never really songs on their own. I understand that this is a different format and bears with it a whole lot more material. If I were to throw a song or two out there, and obviously there are many to choose from, I'd probably say Morning Bell or (Nice Dream)
Thanks for doing this one. It is, as you say, a powerful song on several levels - the very currently relevant lyrics, the insidious tension running through the song and growing almost before you realise it, the abrupt, executory ending. I like that your younger son has put a moon on his picture for a change to empathise the sinister feel and I love the expression on the parboiled witch. Starting to feel, though, as if this quest is making Jakob more and more sure that Radiohead is not for him. Hope you’re giving them a second (and third) chance off camera, as most of them are growers. Oh and King of Limbs really is excellent, both studio and live versions.
While the chord progression is quite simple, it's a very complex arrangement, both the strings and the beat, that together creates a really interesting rhythmic pattern. I don't expect a gen z person to comprehend all that at first listen, but I believe you (gen x father) have got to help him (gen z son) notice those kinds of details to make him understand the greatness of Radiohead. If that is what you're trying to achieve. I mean that's what you're saying; that you want to convince him that Radiohead is the greatest band of all time. I really enjoy your videos though, so this is not a critique, but rather a Radiohead-fan getting frustrated when hearing someone say that Burn the Witch is "nothing special". That is simply not correct haha.
Absolutely hear that. I came down a little hard on him earlier for throwing away beautiful composition so am trying to let him go at his pace (why I don't yell at him for giving the sung a 6). I hear a lot of people say that Radiohead are masters of simplicity. But you and I know that what they hear as "simple" is actually massively complex, made to sound simple to the ear. If I miss this complexities, don't hesitate to point them out. He reads the comments and we can get him from every angle. I hope that doesn't sound abusive 🤔😄
I mean it depends from person to person. I appreciate the arrangements in this song, and know how beautifully complex it is. I'm not a musician or anything. I'll turn 19 this month. I got into Radiohead in 2020. Made my lil brother (14y.o in 2021) listen to them last year, and to my surprise he got into them. He was KSI/rap only kid in 2019/2020. It probably got him interested in music composition. He's trying to get better at it, and he's pretty decent already. While we still have a very different spectrums of music we like, Radiohead is our Top 3 artist for sure.
It's interesting to see what's picked up on and how differently you guys listen to music. I think dadman appreciates musical details while sonman listens more for a song as a whole. Interesting and best regards to you Would you guys react to our audience suggestions? If so, make it a separate thing and perhaps do a bunch in a row once you have a few suggestions. Also you should expose your son to their weirdest stuff. Spinning plates or amazing sounds of orgy, I love that side of their sound
I love this song but on my first listen I was pretty much on the same side as the son. Nothing very remarkable. It definitely had to grow on me and now I'm more on the dad's opinion.
I thought the first 3 videos got progressively better. Love the format since! Yall know I'm here for it 😁👌 BTW, are yall keeping tally so yall can total it when you're through?
Burn the witch is a really good song. If you are doing the KOL album, then you got to try out there "in the basement" live version. I feel like that is the version that they feel best about.
To be honest the way you have done it , your kid will never listen to Radiohead , your pushing all this knowledge on him so fast , it’s overwhelming, you have listened to Radiohead for 25 years probably , and to be honest I think your sons reactions are very correct ,

All great suggestions. All have to be done

How's this a simple intro?
My first thought, too! It's an aggressive, violent onslaught by a full orchestra, and unlike any of their other intros.

Great song, best RH video ever!

Such a intense and good song. On the top of my head suggest Jigsaw falling into place

great vid!
let me suggest two of my favorite songs.
1. you and whose army?
2. scatterbrain.
You and whose army did such a killer job getting reverb in the vocals using an ondes martenot diffuser. Shout out to the ondes martenot!
The king of limbs and amsp are my favourite two albums, unusual to see someone who likes those albums
I love this song but on my first listen I was pretty much on the same side as the son. Nothing very remarkable. It definitely had to grow on me and now I'm more on the dad's opinion.
Yeah, I do wonder if after time he will cringe watching his earlier reactions.

Scott reminds me of George Castanza from Seinfeld lol. Seems like an awesome dude.
I have a suggestion. Face each other for the entirety of the song. Full awkward unblinking eye contact throughout. Bet you didn't think of that
That's true. No way I could stare at someone, even my own kid, for several minutes.
You have to make him react to Fake Plastic Trees and Nude
Put the kid up for adoption.
U remind me of sam herring from future islands when ur mimicking

Try TOOL
this dude certainly prefers his simple straight forward normie music.
