      technically the drill is still round, it's only mounted in a floating head that has the shape of a square. So it basically behaves as a constrained router. So technically it is not a "square" drill, drills make per definition round holes, because it rotates but you can move the drill and create any shape.
      There are square (or any shape) punches but that only works on iron, because most wood would shatter, tear, splinter when put under that much force. Also even those punches do have rounded corners. Those things are scary because the torque bolt sometimes breaks when you tighten it to cut through the steel and your knuckles slam against the project you are working on.

    • @JasonHoogerhyde
      @JasonHoogerhyde 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yea he did, you can hear it struggling, and see it in the cut too.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Jason Hoogerhyde Not the first time the "teacher" on tested needs a teacher (you could watch him cut in the wrong direction too). His technique of putting his hand DIRECTLY OVER the bit spinning under the material is putting a lot of faith in the wood not flying apart under his hand and running his thumb right into the bit... Not just dumb, but dangerous, techniques shown on Tested.

      Maxwelhse I have to agree with you here. That cut made me so nervous. Definitely not one I would feel safe making.

      Concerned viewers are put in a bit of a tough situation; while we can acknowledge that Will and Norm are novice woodworkers and power-tool operators, the commendable idea of showcasing their gradual "learning process" falls a little flat when inefficient or dangerous techniques are rarely called out or used as teachable moments. It's hard to imagine what particular audience these videos could benefit educationally, considering beginners probably deserve more direct and careful instruction, and more experienced individuals can only gawk at improper procedure. The most pronounced pattern in these videos is that their education about these tools is largely circumstantial. Will and Norm have a goal, and tools are suggested to help them reach it. Without a more broad understanding of what these tools are (and are not) capable of, they tend to force things, work inaccurately or inefficiently, and just nearly avoid safety issues. I'd really love to see them receive, and thus share with all their viewers, the teaching they deserve.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anyone who works that carelessly (the teacher) would be escorted from my shop or re-educated on the spot. At the very least it's a huge insurance liability to work like that. The tough position isn't for the viewers, it's for Norm or Will when one of their poor teachers gets them hurt. I'm sure the guy meant well, but good thoughts don't put digits back on. I do agree that it would be interesting to see them document going through a PROFESSIONAL woodworking course. Even the stuff Adam does is terrifying and he's had hundreds of stitches to prove it.

    I'm very surprised that Adam doesn't have an adjustable hole cutter in his shop. It's THE tool to have when cutting holes that are above the average medium to pro Forstner bit set. IMO.

    @x9x9x9x9x9 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A chisel is a thing for cutting out squares. Also it sounds like that router is set too high or the bit is super dull. I'm going to guess the dull bit but incase you didn't know you want to rout stuff out a little pass at a time.
    EDIT: I spoke too soon. He just plunged that fucker in. Dammit. I had high hopes for this guy.

    These ten minute videos are just - frustrating.
    Please make them longer, because there's alot of just standing and talking, and not doing actual work imho. And that's not interesting for me to watch in ten minute bites at a time.
    Ofcourse I could just wait for you to finish the entire series, and watch it all in one long go, but I sense that you're splitting up the videos to get extra video hits for adwords.

    Invest in a 1 1/8" spade bit for those button holes. It irks me to see those buttons loosely fall into those 1 1/4" holes.

    Alternatively you guys could have mounted the joysticks flush on the bottom without routing, and then simply purchased longer joystick shafts (which are available for those types of joysticks). So the end result is that the joystick comes up out of the wood the same distance as what you did but you didn't have to do all the routing to get the depth right.

    • @tested
      @tested  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you do that, the joystick is going to feel kind of loose and not quite right.

      Selecting the proper thickness material for the cabinet from the outset would have worked just fine too.. Why on Earth did you choose 3/4" just to turn the majority of it into 1/2"?

    @Tested Are you going to stain and lacquer this cabinet or maybe hi-fill and paint in 2 pack (automotive) paint? Great build Norm. Look forward to seeing the finished product. Onya

  • @rdoetjes
    @rdoetjes 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow they don't use calipers?!
    Doesn't Adam have a cnc-router in his well equipped shop?
    Or is it a conscious choice to use relatively cheap power tools so everyone can see how it's done with out cnc.
    This thing would be very easily be drawn up in CAD and send to a cnc-router and it would be very precise.

    Another option for cutting the hole for the trackball would be to use a fly cutter. These are inexpensive and work well for hole sizes that are larger than a hole saw but too small for a router and circle cutting jig.

    norm you know that square drill bits are real right? The Harry Watt square drill bit.
    works like this: mathworld.wolfram.com/ReuleauxTriangle.html
    I remember when I told an apprentice to get one,he thought it was one of those old jokes like a skyhook. Couldn't convince him I was telling the truth until he saw it working.

    Would be nice if the project would proceed more in one video, because if there is one video a week and only thing that's done is making two squares with a router, it's just not that entertaining to watch.

    This is a fantastic adjustable hole cutter. I've used it in both wood and metal. Though to be fair, that is pretty thick wood and you'd probably need a longer cutting bit than I've ever used.

      Whoa, that's a cool hole cutter. I have one of the more traditional versions meant for wood, but I don't really trust it (as I've blown one up that got bound up in a deeper hole, and am not a fan of flying metal). I think I'll try to make one of the ones you showed there.

    It's painful reading the comments on these woodworking Tested videos. Every guy and his grandmother comes out of the woodworks - pun intended - to blurt out in a borderline autistic manner how he's better at this. If you have useful advice, fair enough. Provide it. But the whole "This made me cringe" or "Don't they know better?!" or "Everyone knows this, duh!" comments are both unwanted in the making community and very unproductive.
