Custom Raspberry Pi Arcade Cabinet- How to make a removable control panel. Episode#4

  • This video is to show how to make a control panel for an arcade cabinet that can be used in the stand up arcade cabinet or removed from the cabinet so you can take the control panel to a friend's house and plop it on their coffee table, hook up a HDMI cable and plug it in and play! It is a portable arcade with everything needed to play inside the control panel.
    I decided to show every little detail of the build so anyone can follow along and understand how to build it and learn some tips such as use of tools, machines, layouts, design, and tricks of the trade. One of my pet peeves about tv shows about projects is that they cut out a lot of the difficult parts and leave you with the feeling that you missed out on the build. I sped up most of the build video x600 to x1000 to help keep it interesting though. I hope you find it interesting and feel inspired to build one yourself.
    If you have any questions about the build, please feel free to comment and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
    If you would like to keep up with behind the scenes info,pictures, and videos, follow us at / way_of_the_wrench
    If you enjoyed the video or got something out of it, I would appreciate a like and a subscribe so I can be inspired to create more videos and continue to make better content for you guys! Thanks for watching and if you hit the post notification bell, you will know when our next videos are out!
    I hope that these videos can help someone if they want to create their own arcade cabinet and if you would like to make a similar version as mine, go ahead. I will be posting all designs and plans throughout the build videos and a final video showing build costs and plans.
    If you have any ideas for the theme or look of the arcade cabinet, please leave a comment down below!!
    The next video will be about how to design a stand up cabinet to support this control panel using Google Sketchup online. If you missed the earlier videos, start here • Custom Raspberry Pi Ar... for episode#1.

    Nice. I would've went the pedestal route though. It's portable when u add wheels and u can keep the PC and hdmi cords connected for use on any TV anywhere.

      Yeah I like those pedestal designs too, I'll probably make one of those in the future. This control panel is part of a bigger cabinet in this case. Thanks for the watch!

      LOL...Yeah it happens every Movember as I support cancer awareness (shave my beard and grow a hideous moustache) and collect money for cancer research. I am a cancer survivor and have been fighting cancer for 27 years. This year it is even more important because my best friend of 26 years just died from a very quick bout with stomach cancer. So fully expect that baby face in videos this November. Thanks for the watch!

    Your forstner bit was dull when you were cutting out the button holes. Also, if you're not drilling all the way through, why hang out if the edge? The flex wasn't helping with tear out either. Next time, sharp bit and sacrificial wood underneath.

    • @wayofthewrench

    Also, do you mind sharing what type of router bit you use at 49:00? I'm trying to fit joysticks but need to rout space for the mounting plate. Originally, I planned to buy a flush trim router with a top bearing, create a template, and clamp it over the bottom side of the CP. I'm just wondering what the alternative router would be if I did it "free hand."

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's just a straight router bit and I used the outer diameter of the base against the plywood jig to make a template. Hope that helps, thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel. Enjoy the series!

    At 6:30, you put something like a 10-degree angle on the top edge of the front piece of the control panel box. (I think this was to match the slope of the cp box sides.) Did you do the same with the top edge of the back piece of the control panel box? Or the two pieces adjacent to the front piece? I put bevels on pieces for my own CP box design, but it was a huge pain trying to get them all aligned.

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes I would have put an angle on that. On any pieces that had compound angles it was crazy hard to make them match perfectly so I hand sanded them to suit with a sanding block. In the grand scheme of things matching those angles was very minor and probably not even seen, it was more for it to sit flush. When you're done making your cabinet, send me some pics or a video. I'd love to see it! Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

    Nice build, in the planning for my own and wonder if glue alone will do the job. Is screws necessary?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically yes the glue is enough but it will move slide around a lot unless you have it clamped or something like nails or screws to hold it till it dries. Good luck on your build!

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome glad they helped ya out! Yes, I either measure from center to center or one side of the bolt to the same side of the other bolt. I used a digital vernier caliper but if your careful you can just use a ruler.

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can set the angle on the table saw for the one angle and then just hand sand on a block to blend the angles to suit with a sanding block. Thanks for the watch!

    Do you think birch/maple ply would be an ok option if ok with the cost difference? I'm thinking it might be worth it to have a lighter cab if possible

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh for sure, that works but really make sure that your plywood is straight/flat because nothings worse than building with warped panels. It will be lighter but you probably wouldn't notice as the end weight is still pretty heavy. Thanks for the watch!

  • @nevetskcaps
    @nevetskcaps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you believe the screws are required? Couldn't you just glue the side panels to the batterns?. I'm worried that the screw holes will be a lot harder to deal with then pinholes from the pin nailer.

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Screws are not required but allow assemblies to be disassembled for a dry fit of everything. The brad nails and screws are there to hold things in place until the glue sets. The screw holes were not a big deal to fill but a bit more work than filling brad nail holes. Really use what you have in your shop. Cheers!

    I attempted to use MDF and as soon as I lifted it off the stack at lowes I said "hell no!!" Then attempted to get melamine. And agian..."hell no!" I I had to pay double the price for maple plywood.

      @wayofthewrench  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that stuff isn't the lightest but nowadays I can't even believe the pricing on wood. I just payed $240 for 2 sheets of 3/4" cabinet grade plywood for my virtual pinball build....yikes! Thanks for the watch!

      Just a flush trim router bit. The bearing follows the template I made and only cuts flush with it.
