    the pedestal build would have been fantastic, if you had made like a cabinet for the monitor with speaker grills on the sides...
    it would also have added asthetics to the whole machine. :) other then that, very nice man :)

      great idea! Maybe even make the cabinet curved to hold the plexi curved but the screen flat inside, that's gotta be a pretty cool effect, I'd use lexan or a dark plexi, It's probably tricky but the look would be amazing. For the gRills I'd use that perforated sheet, I think it's aluminum, looks really cool and it can be cut at any size.

    nice build, why dont you use a vinyl wrap? and how did you design the 2player cabinet? did you use a pattern? thnx

    • @theweekendsocialpodcast5577
      @theweekendsocialpodcast5577  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wanted to go with a classic black to reduce cost and give it a more functional look. I don’t have anything against vinyl wraps but given I made this custom a wrap would have been a bit more expensive than I would have preferred.
      And yea I did use a pattern for the two player cabinet but it wasn’t 100% precise. I have a link to the template in the 2-player build video- heads up that you’ll have to make some adjustments if you go that route.

    Any tips on installing the raspberry and downloading games?

    • @theweekendsocialpodcast5577
      @theweekendsocialpodcast5577  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! There’s a bunch of videos out there for installing the software to run the games. I think this method works really well and is the easiest I could find (th-cam.com/video/E5MfSlRwYGI/w-d-xo.html). Once you get your raspberry pi set up, you can connect wirelessly to the pi on your home network and installing games is as simple as dragging and dropping. I love it! But I've gotta ask: what are you going to do when that table saw kicks back on you? My personal opinion is that it's almost impossible to be careful enough with that tool. As your workshop grows, please prioritize table saw safety features, because losing fingers makes it really hard to play bar chords!

      Thanks so much and glad to hear, Lewis! And your message can’t be said loudly or often enough- safety is NUMBER 1. I know I don’t talk about it often (and that’s my fault, will do better going forward) but before I cut anything I say to myself “where is the blade? Ok, now where are my hands? Am I wearing eye and ear protection?” That one time you forget to check is the one time you show up in the ER and are hoping the doctors can sew something back on!

    Hey, I'm interested in installing LED buttons. Just wondering how you power them? Do you need a separate power supply? I'm not using a PC and not using arcade1up. I do have a USB on my TV. Thanks for any info. Like your setup!👍

    • @theweekendsocialpodcast5577
      @theweekendsocialpodcast5577  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The LED buttons are lit via USB power. So if you’re using a PC or a raspberry pi (or a smart TV in theory), it SHOULD light up the buttons. There are several videos out there on how to wire the buttons and as long as you have the controller board with a power port, you’ll be good to go.

      I appreciate the feedback- for a first build, I am happy with it but agree there are some improvements that could be made in a future build (especially with the screen). The big square base is necessary, unfortunately, to stabilize the arcade with all of the weight from the control panel and the TV screen. But it would be interesting to see what else could be done instead! Thanks for watching and for commenting Rob!

  • @parceromaniaco9667
    @parceromaniaco9667 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Very cool watching you making the brace for the pedestal. I used to build my own arcade sticks way back and restored and converted a few arcades and tried all kinds of paints for projects like this. If you're willing to experiment for the next one, try flat paint, when doing basic painting like you did, it comes out way better, looks cleaner, paints easier, also use a foam roller as opposed to the fabric rollers. Foam rollers spread out super fine on all wood. Wood filler also works well and you don't have to chase it as fast like with bondo.
    Just an idea, not sure if viable, look into dox matrix signs, I think there are some nice ones that go well with the arcade and can mount to the top of the screen, or in marquee, there are ways to make them show the title of the game or custom graphics. I like the main design you follow, you keep it classic and straight. What I like the most is that the games get played, preserve the love for the games.
    If you have a router, look into doing some T-molding, it's easier than you think and it really dresses up the arcades, T-molding is fairly inexpensive and well varied. Also, smoked plexiglass is not much more expensive than regular plexi and makes the games look good, just up the contrast a tad if you have to, gives you a cleaner look. You could also spray paint the plexiglass for if you wanna make a bezel or have a second one and sandwich artwork to give it that arcade feel.
    Great video, thanks for sharing!

    • @theweekendsocialpodcast5577
      @theweekendsocialpodcast5577  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What an awesome comment! Thanks for the suggestions- I might try flat paint for a future build…. I just wanted a glossy finish on the machine but you might be right.
      I LOVE the idea of a dot matrix sign at the top. I’ll have to try that out…
      I’ve done T-molding on other machines… because this build used 1/2 inch plywood, I decided not to do it but I agree, it is a nice touch!

    You can use cabinet vinyl to cover surfaces. You can even use a laser printer to print images on the vinyl (size limited). Or go to a vinyl shop to print larger. Then cut plexiglass to place over controller surface and sand edges.

      I had not even thought about using cabinet vinyl. That’s a super good tip! I actually talked to a neighbor who has a large vinyl printer for his job I could get him to print custom detailed graphics for my next build… looking forward to giving that a go.

      @@TheDainerss I really thought hard about whether I wanted T-track on the pedestal style cabinet. I ended up going without it (mostly because I didn’t have any 1/2” t-track handy) but if I do another one of these, I could definitely see it making a nice cosmetic difference.

      @theweekendsocialpodcast5577  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for not mentioning that! I got them off of Amazon- they are pretty inexpensive ($10 for a two pack, $18 for a four pack) and super easy to install. Here’s a link: 2Pcs Plastic Car Cup Holder, Car Drink Holder, Adjustable Folding Cup Holder, Folding Car Cup Holder with Screws for Universal Car Truck Boat Van www.amazon.com/dp/B095YMZ61X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_Z9P6M9AMXKD59MT3R5MT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
      Something to consider, though- they aren’t super durable. I broke BOTH of the drink holders on my sisters machine when moving it over to her house. Fortunately they are easy to replace and inexpensive!

    You got any openings for an extra sibling? On a serious note I really want to get into woodwork but I have no tools and no experience. Any tips on a good starting point?

    • @theweekendsocialpodcast5577
      @theweekendsocialpodcast5577  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Matthew!!!
      Just so you know, I just started doing woodworking myself. I am by NO MEANS an expert and I am learning as I go.
      The best starting point is just to do it. Here’s a couple of things that I wish I had known going into it:
      1) Buy tools only when you need them. I’ve got tools sitting on my shelf that I’ve never opened thinking they’d be useful. You can get by pretty well with a circular saw, a ruler, a power drill and some glue.
      2) Watch as many how to videos as you can. There are some really talented people on TH-cam and you can learn how to pretty much make anything.
      3) Home Depot and Lowes are convenient but you can find great tools for much less- Harbor Freight or Tractor Supply Co. have amazing deals on tools. Just know what you want before you go (see #1 above).
      4) It seems so obvious to say this but it’s the most important thing I could share: ALWAYS THINK ABOUT SAFETY. I have bruises on my hand as I’m typing this because I wasn’t paying attention while hammering.
      Feel free to reach out anytime if you want to bounce some ideas off someone or if you have any questions at all!

    Not sure the point of having your kid in a mask and let alone putting him on camera..

    • @theweekendsocialpodcast5577
      @theweekendsocialpodcast5577  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First off, thanks for watching the video. Secondly, my son was actually more involved in the process than might have been shown on the video. That’s out of respect and caution for him. Third, my wife and I caught COVID (hence the mask, his choice being cautious). Fourth, I want all of my kids to take pride in not only the creative process but the ability to share it with the world. Safely.
      I usually don’t reply to comments like this, but I’m proud of my 14 year old and I’ll defend his choices until I’m in the ground. And I’ll haunt the haters after I’m buried.

    Absolutely amazing build. Couple tips tho: a piece of cheap acrylic over the control panels makes everything pop. Also if you overlap the control panel on the back, then you can use a piano hinge on the back and it makes everything nice and hidden.
