    I have the Rev and I am very happy with it, I am a service technician and I carry it with me so that I do not have to go to my van to get tools for every small job.
    It seems like the Rev was designed specifically for that.
    I use the ruler to measure bolts, I like to use the package opener, the screwdrivers are fine and the pliers are perfect for me.
    A technician also hates springback pliers by default (we use our little finger for that).
    So yes the Rev is 100% perfect the question is just for what kind of people.

    I used the rev for 2 full years as an EDC, always found it reliable & useful. The pliers on the rev, with the overbite on the Wirecutters seemed to me to be better than the cutters on the sidekick or the wingman.

  • @David-ey3mk
    @David-ey3mk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +337

    The rev is great. People succumb to your opinion way too much. Something you missed is that the wire cutters actually cross on the Rev, like the Wave. The wingman and sidekick's wire cutters don't even meet. So you didn't demonstrate the cutters. That's a biased test. You can see space between them. That seriously affects their ability. I had a hard time even cutting snare wire and paper clips. It's a breeze with the rev. Next, I have edc-ed the Rev, and the opening isn't all that bad. I think it looks cool, and if you practice, it becomes much more dextile. Finally, that pocket clip detail was useless. Another biased and untested opinion. I carried the wingman for over a year, and the pocket clip had gotten so loose that you could rotate it easily. I've carried the rev for a couple months, and it is strong. I think that you need to actually carry a piece of gear for half a year or so, so that you don't have these untested opinions. As a gear reviewer your opinion should be based on facts or unbiased opinions based upon duration testing. Bad review of a great product. And change your title to, "Leatherman Rev: Why I Hate It".

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      If you like it more power to you. The price/value/performance ratio is not there for me. As a gear reviewer to test something for half a year is impractical. I would post a video month or even less. The testing and use we do on this channel is some of the most tough and consistent around. But at the end of the day its just my opinion, you can agree or disagree.

    • @rekozma
      @rekozma 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I have all three and my opinion is the same as yours. I find the Rev. is in my pocket far more the either of the others. I feel it's a great multi-tool and I picked mine up for 29.99 well worth every penny. most the time he's spot on but please remember when you don't have to pay for stuff and you have hundreds of dollars worth of gear run throw your hands you can " bitch" about things that are not at all a problem. for 50% of the people he is saving them money. for me and you we just got lucky we actually got one to find we like it. there are others out there that will also see it and pick it up. they to will find that for them it's the right one. but I don't see it as the worst multi-tool ever. have you ever had a Gerber. they make some really good and quite frankly they very worst multi-tool out there

    Thanks for the video. It convinced me to buy the REV. It is the closest to the retired SIDECLIP which was my favorite from years ago. For old guys like me that just need a quick tool and do not plan to fall-a-tree or file-thru-prison-bars with my pocket knife, the REV is great. As for the lack of a spring in pliers I guess none of my other pliers have springs so the REV is more familiar in actual use. The different wire-stripper will require more attention to applied-pressure, but the other two look like that would work only for 14 gauge romex. The box-opener is most useful in opening electronics boxes which is 90% of what I open-- no danger of cutting a cord or nicking a screen. Oh, BTW, on most denim jeans like the ones you are wearing, the pocket-watch pocket has been deepened to accommodate pocket knives which save on wearing-out the pocket lip and probably keeps the knife higher and less likely to pressure up-and-out when sitting.

    Hi,
    My first reaction was to dislike the video from the start but you do not deserve that treatment. You do good reviews of products and I value your opinion. However I do have some remarks. Before I tell you my remarks, here's some history; I have used (only) the original Learherman since the early 80s and I was satisfied with that. My house burned down 3 years ago and my Leatherman was lost. I needed a replacement.
    I bought the wingman. I did not pay attention and I do not like the serated blade. Furthermore my pocketclip is not steady; it moves.
    I needed another one. I looked at the Rev. (I got the scissors on my victorinox) I bought it. It has been my edc for about 3 years now. The clip is still solid. It does everything I need (like my original Leatherman). I actually prefer the pliers not to be spring loaded.
    For a while I had interchanged the blades thinking that the springloaded pliers would be a bonus. I reverted back.
    At the moment my Wingman is in my "mecanics purse" on my bycicle and the Rev is in my pocket.
    I am convinced that a Wingman or Sidekick does not outdo my Rev. I am convinced that e.g. a Wave would outdo my Rev but knowing that I can buy several Rev for the price of 1 Wave I doubt that the Wave would outdo me in the long run for the same price.
    Anyway, that's my humble opinion.
    Kind regards,
    Alain

Maybe, but police don't want you to open it with one hand, if possible not at all in public. Leatherman is just adapting to new markets with products like rev.

      Leatherman recently came out with the bolster which sells for $50. It is identical to the Rev with the exception that it does not have the package opener it has a small serrated blade instead. It is the package opener that I value more on a multi-tool that's already got a good plain blade than having a serrated blade to go along with it.

    The hole in the blade was likely moved toward the tip to increase strength, following up with complaints of broken blades. They should have added a checkered area there to make it grippy. I think you can buy replacement blades and swap it out. The pliers probably have to be ground shorter so they can fold into the legs without hitting anything in the smaller tool. I agree that it's silly they traded the labor of grinding the pliers shorter with the labor eliminated by leaving out the spring. They should have kept the spring and the pliers the way they were and just made the stamping bigger.

  • @jimmelnyk7506

    Great review. In my experiance, the one thinner side does actually make carrying a bit more comfortable. it doesn't bite into my leg as much as the wingman. I love both but I currently carry the rev for that reason and because of the plain edge blade. And it was $20. Can't forget that.

    I was in Lowe's today, and while browsing tools, I came across this Rev, for $11.96. I immediately assumed it was mislabeled, or a bait and switch operation. However, after closer inspection I saw it was true. Grabbed three, and then proceeded to check out the other Leatherman multi tools. The next cheapest I found were the Wingman, and Sidekick at $50 each. That is 4+ times more expensive. No doubt you sacrifice a couple tools choosing the Rev. However, the quality of manufacture of the tool is the same. And for me, it pocket carries almost invisible, being that it is slimmer, and lighter, than any pocket clip tool I have carried. I am very happy with my choice, and think those I share this with as a gift, will much appreciate it's quality, as well. I think it comes down to perspective, and expectation. For me, basic tools is what I am looking for. Not a tool box folded up in my pocket, or hanging from my belt. But rather something light, to use for quick repair jobs. Otherwise, I will make time for a project, and assemble the proper tool set I will need to get the job done. I think this whole multi tool genre, has spun way out of control, and become quite irrational, with some multi tools pushing $200, now. Really? Maybe, its time to step back and take a break from all this madness?

    I watched your video twice and found that if you tightened up the pocket clip, this would be the tool for you. Your negatives weren't actually Leatherman drawbacks, but rather your personal preferences. After watching I came to the conclusion that you should dump the two other tools and stick with the rev if budget is your actual motive. You are probably more like the rest of us and are really glad to own (or almost own) one of each that comes out. Great to have you out there providing your opinions and giving us your perspective though.

    I've been impressed with my Rev. Very smooth with no slop. The clip wiggles a bit on all of Leatherman's budget models. Not a big deal as it stays secure in the pocket. The Rev is made in the USA & has MUCH better fit & finish than the two Sidekicks I've had (one I had to return because it was virtually impossible to get some of the tools out as well as having other issues). The Rev also has the upgraded wire cutters the Wingman & Sidekick lack.
    While it doesn't have the scissors in the Wingman or the saw in the Sidekick, being thinner & lighter with upgraded wire cutters makes the Rev a legit option & a fantastic budget EDC/work multi-tool, IMO.

      This whole review with "thumbs down" is a lot of BS, some flaws mentioned are advantages for many. Also claiming that one side is smaller "makes no difference" is awkward at best - have he not seen how his jeams pockets are shaped? :) It's really a decent model, it has no major flaws that other models don't have.

  • @interdec
    @interdec 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've only watched up until4 mins 30 seconds; the rev is, in my humble opinion, far superior. The blade is supposed to be released using the fingernail of your opposite hand. The positioning of the slot on the rev increases the leverage and makes that operation much easier. I therefore opine that rather than being a detraction, it's an evolutionary improvement, and the wire cutter is actually also a significant improvement.

    I just bought this 2 years later needing a budget multitool for a car bag I keep with basic things.The review is close the pocket clip on mine is actually pretty good could be luck of the draw, and wish there was something useful on the other side of that file.Also the knife notch does seem to be better on other models. However I have used this on a few camping trips and recently on switching out the car battery and I will say for the money it isn't bad their are some leathermans that I would love to have over this one but are bigger cost more and considering it's a back up type of tool for me would probably not justify the cost difference. not sure if this is of any use to you 3 years later, but it is intended as a wire stripper. you rest the wire in the notch, seat it firmly, and twist 360 degrees and it cuts into the sheathing surrounding the wire. with practice and the right pressure I find them extremely useful in multi tools.

    Sometimes, I believe, you try to push your point and just miss it. 1. The quality is the same. 2. The main use for the majority of us are the pliers and the wire cutter. The pliers work equally to the others and the wire cutter lips overlap making it the best of the three. 3. It is lighter and a tad less bulky. You always can spend more and get more. The "rev" is what it's intended to be for the price it has.

    The Leatherman Rev is great. I've owned several Leatherman tools, and the Rev is my favorite. Have used it for 5 years. Very low cost, light weight, compact, I like the blade lock, attached clip, removable hex screws (not riveted). All action is very smooth, nothing is loose, very well made. Only complaint is that the can opener broke at some point.

    Well Aaron first of all i really love your reviews but i would have to disagree on this one. Yes, there are some flaws on the Rev however keep in mind that the plier head on this multitool is a little bit superior compare to those two. It uses a "scissor" type wire cutters where the Sidekick and Wingman uses a "pinch" type of cutters. This will cut wires more cleanly and probably last a little bit longer. And i think that Leatherman built this multi tool for those types of people who just wants to have their very first multi tool or for those who does not know what a multi tool is so this will be a good starter multi tool for them. And for the market price, i think its still worth it. Just my two cents from your fan here in the Philippines! 😊

    Good points on your review. I fail to understand why the Wingman's price has almost doubled unless it was because it was very popular and they wanted to cash in on that. The Rev lacks what is for me an essential 'office' use multitool feature, the scissors. In an office environment with coworkers who are knife shy, getting scissors out is much friendlier that opening that blade. For maintenance around the house, I will go with my supertool or regular tools.

    It’s a great Leatherman, I disagree with this review, but everyone is entitled to their opinion, for the price, the quality is Leatherman, it’s just budget friendly and also these are meant for a quick solution to tools, not intended for heavy use, so it is well worth the price and for that price it’s perfect.
