Hey Shane I would like to thank you! I was constantly being bullied by a group of kids at school when I was in first year highschool (13 year old back then). I was small and timid, and didn't know how to defend myself. Every day, I would come home with bruises and scratches, and my confidence was at an all-time low.
One day, my older brother saw how much I was struggling and decided to help. He showed me a series of your videos on how to box, punch properly etc.. I would like to stand up for myself and fight back against my bullies. I was skeptical at first, but I was desperate for a solution, so I decided to watch your videos and give it a try.
Over the next few weeks, I practiced the techniques I had learned from your videos. I worked on my posture, my body language, my stance, my jabs and my verbal assertiveness. Slowly but surely, I began to feel more confident and self-assured.
One day, when the bullies were picking on me as usual, I decided I had had enough. I stood up for myself, using the techniques I had learned from you, and much to my surprise, the bullies backed off. They were taken aback by my newfound confidence, and they realized that I was no longer an easy target.
From that day on, I was able to stand up for myself whenever I was bullied. I became more self-assured and my confidence soared. And as I grew older and stronger, I became a leader among my peers, helping other kids to stand up for themselves and fight back against bullies.
Now, I'm 20 year old 3rd college and still watching your videos keep it up! Thank you for fighting for the underdogs!

For me, my 4 tips would be,
1: practice your entrance and exits. I took some punches to learn how to properly enter.
2: Always practice offense with defense. Whenever I would shadow box or hit the heavybag, I would practice my defenses. That way it was in my mind to do it. It made sparring easier.
3: Practicing kata. I never realized what you could do with it until I decided to make something up. It made me think what these moves mean together. Making up a kick boxing combo feels weird but good.
4: sleep. Get your sleep people. I've sometimes went to practice without getting much sleep, and I felt terrible.

    • @kaitosevski3881

Disagree with the kata part. Personally I became a better fighter when I ditched kata completely and used the time I was wasting on it for more sparring or conditioning

For the Muay Thai part of mma I definitely benefit from mobility exercises like:
Standing on one leg lift up, back, side.
      -
This might not be what “Kata” means, since I haven’t trained the traditional martial arts, like kung fu or karate.
      -
I have 1.5y experience in mma (wrestling, Muay Thai and bjj).
Recently started combining Gi bjj (traditional), with No-Gi bjj (mma)

    • @HeartlessKnave
      @HeartlessKnave ปีที่แล้ว +1

I read Jeff Cooper's principles of personal defense and worked on each aspect he teaches for a week (rereading the aspect before actual training) then moved to the next. When done tried everything at once but that was too much to think of especially while fighting, so I combined two at a time. Then worked slowly at all of them.
You don't need to remember all of them and work on all new things at once. Like any technique where you break it down into steps until you can do it all fluidly as a single movement.
Write down (phone or paper, whatever works for you that you'll actually check and use) what you want to work on in a log and select certain things and slowly they all will be engrained in you.
I was screwing around and working on kicking on my BOB and decided to do too many adjustments at once (kicking higher, faster, with more power, a better guard, and just better form in general, all at once) for a roundhouse and I slipped on my carpet and slammed hard directly on an injured shoulder. Now I just am working on it piece by piece.

Excellent intro, but probably only for an advanced and all-round fighter. Good for seeing the whole picture but less instructive for beginners even for intermediate, who seldom are able to judge the distance, worse in seeing angles and least capable of timing. I strongly agree that having a good ability to ALWAYS keep your eyes on your opponent at all times is prob the best ability in combat.
I myself have been training Muay thai the past 7 years and ongoing; jiu jitsu before that for about 2 years or so. I rely a great deal on blocks; and on deflection with my forearms(or gloves), and things like the wing guard/helmet guard. I also like the "wedge guard" as joe valtellini calls it; where you bunch up your lead arm and put it in front of your face, it doesn't totally obscure your vision, and its great for stopping most punches to the head(besides left hooks). I like watching my opponent closely, jabbing them fairly regularly(even if they block most of them I still accomplish my goal just by landing on them, even on their arm), and giving them false readings of both my intensity and where I'm gonna throw next - and I keep a very tight defense, a tight high guard specifically. My defense is very similar to the fighter Gabriel Varga's defense. I like watching my opponent throw at me, blocking their shots off my high guard/forearms, and retaliating when they are withdrawing their fists and not fully ready to defend themselves.
I hate to say it but Im not very good at head movement, maybe cause, as far as striking goes, I've been doing Muay thai for so long, and you don't really NEED great head movement in muay thai - it can actually be a detriment esp if you rely too much on it, and duck into a knee strike right on your chin, or get kicked in the head cause you ducked when he was kicking, and so on. I like to keep firm in my stance. I do use quite a bit of body movement though - that is to say, I move back and forth side to side quite a bit in my spars and fights, for evasion and also to get the best range to land my own shots. I esp like using a step in-left lead hook when they dont expect it to close the distance, and begin a hook-heavy combo usually ending in a leg kick. And if someone DOES have better hands than me; I will teep them away from me, batter them with kicks and knees while keeping a firm defense for my head, while closing in and boxing them up when I feel they are sufficiently focused on my kicks/knees/lower body strikes. You don't gotta have better pure boxing than someone to box them up, you just need to know how to use all your tools in muay thai(or kickboxing). Clinching works well too; the muay thai clinch is much more effective than a pure boxing based clinch.
That said our muay thai gym does have us do pure boxing sparring sometimes(about once every couple weeks to a month; depending on what our coach thinks is needed for some of our members -or all of us) and i also find that VERY fun. I take a slightly different approach to pure boxing - my stance barely changes but my approach to fighting does change, and I throw WAY more body punches(a setup strikes) and I time my punches and my distancing much more carefully in pure boxing since I don't have kicks or knees and so on to use to cover up any imperfections in my boxing like I can under muay thai/kickboxing rules.
    great video as always.

Shane, do you have any tips or advice for guys of a certain age, who while not quite falling apart yet, would still be at a severe disadvantage against someone in their early twenties?

Recovery is just as important as training -- rest, epsom salts baths, ice, massage, stretching, etc.
I also suggest relying on strategy and proper technique over raw aggression/athleticism/speed/power.
Finally, just listen to your body and have fun with it! It's important to push past your comfort zone, but it's a balance of also giving yourself breaks when needed 🙏
