STRENGTH TRAINING FOR MOUNTAIN RUNNERS | WHAT I DO

  • A simple bare bones video of a small strength & conditioning circuit done in the gym.
3 superset exercises for 5 sets.
1.) Barbell back squat with a short pause at the bottom. 5 sets / 75Kg
    2.) Mace 360 swings. 20 reps / 11.25Kg
    3.) Cable pull downs 15 reps / 35Kg
Often I'll only be able to make the gym once or twice a week so I'll generally do compound exercises that hit multiple muscle groups. The idea being to maximise the time I do have.
I do have equipment at home which I use throughout the week but the heavy squats I can only do in the gym.
Additionally, I didn't want to hammer myself too hard in this session as I'd planned a big route on the fells the next day, the video of which will follow shortly.
    Thanks for watching.
    John.

Cracking video John. I am in awe of your gym sessions, makes my newfound S&C stuff look like something a lame baby dormouse might do. I just wish it was May and race season now! Looking forward to GL recce video, have a top day out 👍

Cheers for this John! What's the benefit of the Mace swings? Looks like a sick workout for both strength and mobility! But I've gotta convince myself to buy one 🤣

Hey man thanks for the msg. I personally like them for developing core strength, endurance, balance and coordination. They’re basically a kettlebell on a stick, so all the benefits of kettlebells but different if you know what I mean. Plus you feel like a badass being the only weirdo in the gym swinging one of these about 😉 they’ll improve shoulder mobility and posture too 👌🏻

Hi John, know your based up north, but you should come down south and give Dartmoor and exmoor a crack, maybe you could do a trail/ fell run in every one of the UK's 15 national parks. Love your content already tho

I imagine he’s seen enough of Dartmoor to make him never want to go there ever again 😂

Haha it’s been a while since I was on Dartmoor.. it’s far enough in the past I reckon I could revisit with there being sideeffects 😉

That’s a brilliant idea for a kind of challenge, a 15 miler in 15 parks or something like that 🤔 glad you’re enjoying the vids 🙂🤘🏻

Ha! I knew it! Looking forward to that next vid John, really enjoy this channel, especially the 'waffle'. Been back and watched every video. You've got me out running again after being 'thredders'😉 with niggling injuries. Hope to see you on the fells.

I think Brain fart pull ups is a better name for chin ups anyway 😂 👍🏻

I always take poles on hilly runs and have yet to figure out the best gym training exercise for that. Strangely enough after long flat run’s I’m achy in the shoulder blades. There must be some exercise that tackles both.

This is something I’ve been thinking about too mate even tho I don’t use poles quite as often now. They’ve Concept2 SkiErg’s at my gym which I might incorporate into a workout.. if you wanted to scale up the weight tho you’d have to use a cable machine to simulate the same action I reckon 🤔
