LAKE DISTRICT FELL RUNNING | GREAT LAKES FELL RACE | FINDING NEW LINES

  • In this video I take in some classic Wainwrights of the Southern Fells while out doing a recce of The Great Lakes Fell Race.
    The Great Lakes is organised and run by Ambleside AC with this year's race is taking part 29th June.
    Category AL 21KM / 2130m
    It's a beast of a race and one of my favourites.
    I ran this race last year and in this video I'm doing a recce of some different lines. Mainly the line off Scafell Pike down to the bottom of Foxes tarn Gully which is a check point.
    The other is a different line off Slight Side down into Great Moss. The general concensus is to head south, clear Horn Crag then turn East and drop into Great Moss. I'm trying to find a more direct route off the side of Slight Side.
    * TRAINING UPDATE*
    Weather this week is atrocious (again) so the high fells are unmanagable. The key to a successful training plan is flexibility. Adapt and overcome. I'm focusing on strength work in the gym and low elevation miles while the weather is crap.
    Additionally, I've a place in the Isle of Jura fell race so my attendence for the UTS100K is 50/50 at the moment, more on that later.
    Hope you enjoy this
    Thanks for watching
    John

    Cheers for another excellent film John, I’m running the Lakeland 50 and 13 Valleys later this year and as I live too far away I’ll be getting my Lakeland fix through your films 😁👍🏻 keep ‘em coming mate

    Thanks for a run through the hills. Langdales are a very scenic area. Currently banned from running, awaiting a scan on my knee......

    Superb effort - that last edit through the gate, at around the 35:00 min mark, ticked all the boxes.

    Evening John.
    We are at the end of another NHS week and catching up on our favourite youtube videos.
    Thank you for bringing one of tbe favourite areas of the lakes to our living room after the challenging working week.
    Just watched a brilliantly put together account of the route.
    Stunning. Thank you. 😊

    I really do look forward to these vlogs. They are brilliant and like being in the Lakes. I admire your courage finding those lines off the back of Scarfell. I did laugh a lot a the “Swin-stickle” - I’am am still laughing😂😂😂. Has all the snow now gone? Appreciate all the effort that goes into getting these out. I do like ‘shoe talk’ jacket talk would be good. I have ordered the 360 socks as always have wet and cold feet when venturing off the paths. Looking forward to the next one. Top man 👍🙌

    Cracking video Joh. The irocks are working their magic (& waterproof socks doing their job!)
    Intrigued by this line off SP to FGT. Wonder how much is in it?
    Some tricky route finding on a chunk of the route if in the clag on race day...
    Pike O'Blisco is like the blooming Bermuda Triangle for me, it's always at the end of a race and it is a complex hill if your mind is tired. Found some lines I never want to repeat 🤣
    Sterling work 👍

      Tbh mate I’m not so sure about the waterproof socks.. your feet get wet eventually and I find them less comfortable than a good pair of mid weight wet socks.. but then they’re slightly warmer when wet especially in snow.. they’re trial and error ☺️

    Heya John. I have a little experience re BGR's. From that I would say The Lords Rake is the quicker of the two ways of getting to Sca fell summit definitely worth a test on one of ur recce's

    • @lakelandtrailrunner
      @lakelandtrailrunner  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha this jacket is new! I had it less than a week before I snagged it 😂 waterproof socks are more like a wetsuit sock. Your feet will get wet eventually however, they’ll be marginally warmer than if you wore normal socks 😉

    I keep debating about waterproof socks,but they are so expensive.
    Did your feet remain dry through the streams/river crossings?
    What's your recommendation for brand?

    • @JS-JackSparra21
      @JS-JackSparra21 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have a gazillion pairs of different flavours (although the 360s are new to me). My main take on these is that they aren’t waterproof (for long). Where they do come into their own is in the prevention of grit particles from getting to your feet. No matter what you run through, your feet will remain squeaky clean and won’t suffer from friction/hotspots/blisters caused by dirt ingress. When you do get wet, the socks act like a wetsuit in keeping your feet relatively warm. If you match them with proper gaiters, you’ll stay relatively dry fording deep streams, but many models will also let in water at the top. Those that don’t usually have a silicon band at the hem that can actually cause “wellie rash”, which is a particularly sore experience in the post-run shower 🙄

    • @lakelandtrailrunner
      @lakelandtrailrunner  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JS-JackSparra21 yeah I second this.. they end up acting like a wetsuit for your feet. Feet will eventually get damp/wet but they’ll stay warmer than without. However I have noticed on longer runs they’ll start to chew my feet causing blisters etc whereas if I’m wearing a good quality normal sock I.e a mid/light weight hiking sock I don’t get blisters regardless of how wet my feet are.

    • @lakelandtrailrunner
      @lakelandtrailrunner  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The jacket is a montane featherlite windproof, trousers are Ronhill something.. can’t remember the model 👌🏻🙂
