Mid-Mount Flowmaster Super 44 on a 2015-2023 (S550) Mustang

- Sound comparison between a Borla X-pipe and Atak cat-back in unmuffled mode and a mid-mounted Flowmaster two-chamber Super 44 muffler (Part number 8425454) in place of the X-pipe on. a Vortech supercharged 2018 Mustang GT. Similar sound to an original 40 series muffler, but better flowing. Since this is a single-muffler installation, I wanted the best-flowing two-chamber Flowmaster version, so I chose the Super 44.
Why did I mid-mount it rather than use two Flowmaster mufflers in the rear location like in Flowmaster's American Thunder cat-back system? I wanted more of a classic Flowmaster tone, and I reason that having a length of tailpipe after the muffler (like in a truck or a Fox body Mustang) would give me more of the iconic Flowmaster tone. Did it succeed? Let me know what you think in the comments.
Everyone is always hunting the OG 5.0 sound. Its easy. Super 40, True duals, x pipe, duals out. No more no less. We have had dozens over 30 years.
Any sound clips?
@@Mustang-Geek tons on YT.
@@YUT.308 I’m talking about on S550 mustangs.
Note: This is a super 44 as a crossover pipe, but he still has other mufflers out back. Not sure why the description doesn't mention this. It is greatly misleading.
The rear mufflers are are in "bypass" or "track" mode, so their affect on sound is minimal. The Borla mufflers are a straight through solid pipe when the valves are open.
@@Mustang-Geek Thanks for clarifying. I'm not familiar with all the active exhaust stuff.
@@tmwtpbrent14 I doubt the affect on the exhaust tone will be much, if anything with the Borla ATAK in track mode.
@@Mustang-Geek It seems to be really hard to de-rasp the coyote engines. I'd like to see your setup (super 44 crossover) followed by louvered resonators to some chambered mufflers out back.
@@tmwtpbrent14 Honestly, I think the factory headers are the biggest reason for the "rasp."
Damn that sounds great
It certainly sounds more "mature" than the muffler "bypass," which is just "noise."
I love it!!
I liked the sound quality, but it was a bit quiet for me.
That's the closest I've heard. Sounds really good. 3 inch pipes?
No, the standard Flowmaster 2.5" tailpipes.
Wow sounds great! Are you still running this setup? Can you post some more vids on this? How would the sound change moving the muffler back some and adding x or h pipe?
I didn't keep it on, at it was too mild for me. In retrospect, it might work better without the Borla cat-back as I think the Borla ATAK cat-back still uses the mufflers to cancel out some of the howl...even with the valves open. I need to revisit this.
Ok so you had the single flow master and a borla catback? I was thinking you had straight pipe after the flow master?
@@mojo7709 Since I only ran the valves "open" for the Flowmaster, I assume the Borla cat-back didn't affect the sound. But I could be mistaken. That's why I'd like to literally try a "muffler delete" axle-back with the Flowmaster to see if that has an affect.
Did it throw a code?
No. Exhuast modifications after the catalytic converters should not trigger any codes.
Crooked exhaust tips 🤣
Look straight to me 😵💫
gotta go with the "44's"
It's a tough choice!
Why when I look up the part number is says super 40 not super 44.
Part # 8425454. Flowmaster's website says Super 44.
Does the single muffler instead of 2 seem to be a little restrictive? Cost hp?
Perhaps, but the Super 44 has larger internal passages versus a 40-series case. I didn’t dyno test it.

Sounds the same.
The factory manifolds and catalytic converters certainly dominate the sound.
@@Mustang-Geek I have long tunes on mine. I had to replace the H Pipe with a magnaflow xpipe resonator and Magna flow mufflers. I had an Hpipe and Roush axle back and after the Long Tubes it sounded like ass. These Coyotes make awesome power but sound like ass.
@@freedom6919741 Agreed. I don't think Coyotes sound very good. Long tubes go a LONG way toward making them sound better. I bet a mid-mount Flowmaster and rear muffler delete would really sound better. Easy to try, at least!
@@Mustang-Geek it is probably to quiet now. It is super charged so when I get into the boost it just sounds like a bunch of air 😂. I guess I am getting old and don’t want to listen to the drone anymore.
@@freedom6919741 There's no drone on this setup right now. Not like a Fox body!
