Propane hours can be calculated. Assuming that your bottle was filled to the proper amount then you should get maximum 105.25 hours run time. A 20 pound propane bottle holds about 421,000 BTU's. Divide that by the rated appliance.
For instance your Big Buddy should give you:
    421,000 / 4,000 = 105.25 hours
    421,000 / 9,000 = 46.8 hours
    421,000 / 18,000 = 23.4 hours

You are a bit low. Each pound of propane will generate about 21,548 BTUs of heat so a 20 lb. tank will produce 430,960 BTUs of heat.

    • @jimdent351

@@richardl6751 Yeah you're probably right. At the time I left the comment I knew it could be calculated but wasn't exactly sure how many BTU's in one tank so I googled it. There were a few different numbers so I chose the one in the middle. Some filling places will only fill to 80% so that would only give you 344,768. When I calculate for an outing I'd rather use a conservative figure and come home will gas left over than to go with a high number and run out before it's time to come home

I just bought one at Tractor Supply with the filter and 12ft extension hose. I would highly suggest reading the instructions because it covers burn times and the factors that determine how long a tank will last. The Big Buddy has two heating panels and I thought that both would be on anytime the heater was on but two panels are on only at the high setting. If I hadn't read the instructions I may have thought the unit was defective. There are also two propane bottles and there are facts on how they work. Just saying. Thanks for the instructional and your efforts to make it.

I used mine to heat up a 16 by 80 foot trailer home when our furnace elements went out. It cost a lot to use it on high but how much is keeping your family warm and alive worth? I ran the house furnace fan also to move the heat around and it worked. The house wasn't hot but we had blankets and made it through a very dangerous problem. I used mine for 3 days non stop full blast. I have tubs of those 1 pound bottles that will be getting refilled later for something like this again. It was -10F outside. This was a freak front that moved through and caught us all off guard. One problem I had was the one pound bottles would freeze up with ice covering them and would only get 3/4 the use out of them. I would replace them with new ones and use them up after it did it again to the new ones. Back and forth for 3 days getting very little sleep keeping an eye on this thing like a hawk. Got to say it worked awesome.

I'm looking into your system like this and I've been studying from my understanding is that they are safe for inside. As for your tank I don't think it's that big of an issue. Because if it's cold enough to need the heater in the house it's more likely going to freeze the tank for being outside.. bear that in mind

It's not hard to answer. The regular 9000 BTU Buddy heater hooked to a 20 pound cylinder will give you 92 hours on low. 41 hours on high. This assumes that you have a full 4 gallons of propane in the tank. The Blue Rhino type sellers usually under fill their tanks, so you may get less on a convenience store propane tank. The *Big* Buddy heater can produce double output - 18k BTU versus 9k for the regular Buddy heater. So if you have a Big Buddy running on high, you would half the 41 hours. You'll get about 20 hours on high. Low setting is the same for both. Big Buddy medium setting would be 41 hours. It's the same as regular Buddy high setting.

I use a Big Buddy with the quick connect 12ft hose and regulator at the tank (tank is outside, with the hose run to inside). Been my primary heat source for years and I track the run time. On a Blue Rhino, AmGas etc swap tank (short filled) I consistently get 40-hrs on Med, 61-hrs on Low. On my personal tanks (fully filled) I consistently get 59-hrs on Med, 69-hrs on Low. The numbers for low seem wonky, but I don't think these heaters burn very efficiently on low. I run on Med for the most part, hardly ever use High except at start up to heat up the unit fully, then kick it back to Med. I also suspect that the swap tanks are not filled consistently, which has an effect on the numbers. Guess we will see this winter...with fuel prices so high, I bet they will be shorting those (already short filled) tanks a bit more, lol.
