I think a lot of the issues is from coming at the game as a platform puzzler rather than a puzzle platformer. Everything is designed with the intention of being a puzzle first with platforming elements rather than the inverse The movement is designed to be slower paced and more deliberate to enhance the puzzle elements. It wants you to treat every action you do as important and intentional. I think a lot of the fun comes from the natural flow that can emerge from this as getting the perfect set of moves creates something that looks and feels great (Many of the issues you can see come from being a little too impatient. For example getting hit while having the hammer wasn't because of a bad hit box but because the hammer doesn't make you invincible and you have to hit enemies with the head which means spacing is important. The rope issue may be the same thing although it looks more like moving before Mario actually grabbed the rope but it's admittedly hard to tell and I may be wrong. Still there were a lot of issues that seem to stem from treating the game more as a traditional platformer instead of a puzzle. The final boss fight being the biggest example. The small platforms between the long ones is meant to wait for an opening by ducking or jumping but in all the footage they weren't being used which lead to getting hit. There's nothing wrong with that playstyle of course, but it's just very different from what the game is aiming to be/play like) But it also means this isn't the type of game for everyone. As I said before its not as much of a platformer as it is a puzzler and that's intentional but it means if you're more used to platformers or prefer that playstyle it's not gonna click I'd encourage looking into other puzzle platformers or its slightly older sibling, the cinematic platformer and comparing with games like the original Prince of Persia where the gameplay would feel even more stilted compared to other platformers but its all by design to encourage intentional deliberate but slow paced movement to create that very specific flow that I think this game falls into at times Basically I think this gameplay style thats much slower and deliberate might just not click with everyone and if this game is the first exposure to it its fun but probably not the best showing as well, especially when it harkens to other Mario games as a reference that play wildly differently, with an almost completely opposite design philosophy. But again I'd encourage looking into cinematic platformers and things like that to see if the gameplay style really is or isn't to personal taste (And again Recommending the original Prince of Persia, its a fun little game that tends to not get as much attention as it should imo these days)
Honestly just seems like an unironic skill issue, the present minigame can be won with skill and you can time the arrow it’s just tricky. This game is not meant to be played like a regular Mario game and certain stuff like the ropes require patience as it seems most of the examples were from rushing a bit. The game punishes you for being too hasty at times because it’s focused on puzzles first. As for the music imo it’s great it’s just very compressed which tbh was normal for all gba games
I get that it's a puzzle and that line of thought might be the core of the game, but it's MARIO! we all know from playing all of his good games that Mario does not suck the way he does in this game so it feels very odd that's he taking fall damage and struggling to platform (EVEN IF IT IS A PUZZLE) so I think your take is good (this time)
Oooh, I think I really like this channel! Someone actually playing a game and - gasp! - talking about how they actually felt! I'll always find that infinitely better than someone that just echoes the common opinion for fear of being disagreed with. Mario Vs. Donkey Kong was my game when I was little! The sound effects when you hit the switches are burned into my mind forever, and I remember being on that Final(*) Boss for so long. I still haven't played the remake, but I really want to at some point. Despite that, I enjoyed seeing your thoughts about the game. Sorry if it wasn't really your thing, but thanks for not being afraid to say that.
I'm considering picking it up for sure; I never played the original game but I actually did grow up playing Donkey Kong '94 on the Game Boy, I loved that game man. I know this carries forward that gameplay formula so I'm sure I'll love it
This game is fun, but... yea I think DK 94 is just better, especially with the music, and controls. I'd rather that one be remade but hey at least the sound should be improved in the switch version of mario vs dk so that's something
I’m not gonna buy the game but that’s just because I’ve already played it because I bought it on my Wii U. If you haven’t played it, I highly recommend it. It’s really fun. I wish they had made more of these types of games than the stupid toy Mario ones
I played Donkey Kong 94 for the first time in 2019. So it's safe to say that I don't have a whole lot of nostalgia for the series. That being said, I absolutely loved the game so much, that I was actually bringing my DS with me everywhere to play it! In 2019! (By the way, I was playing it on an R4.) When I saw that Mario vs Donkey Kong not only had the exact same gameplay, but controlled the exact same as well, of course I instantly fell in love with that game also. Your dislike seems to stem from the fact that you've misunderstood the game. You complain about the jank resulting in a lack of control, despite it being there to GIVE you more control. The game is very specific on frames, hitboxes, and button presses. The game is essentially a proper 2D version of the amount of control you have over Mario in Super Mario 64. To put it another way, it's like if Tony Hawk's was a platformer. It has a high skill ceiling, but when it clicks, everything just goes together so smoothely. And it's obvious you missed that, when you completely disregarded the most useful move in the game, which is the backflip. Mastering that move, practically lets you skip entire levels. It's nice that you could recognize that it was a good game though, despite it not being a game that like liked. Most people can't tell the difference between something that's good and something that they like. Which is one of the reasons why I love watching your videos. Now, all that being said, I really don't think the game is worth anywhere near $50. I mean, it's a niche GBA game that's been remade on the Switch. It's worth $30, maximum! Maybe if they included the entirety of Donkey Kong 94 as well, then I could see it being worth $50. But that's about it.
They did put new content and added a casual mode or easy mode including with the normal mode so I say wait until the game releases and give it a chance
Question: in the GBA one, if you grabbed onto a moving rope while on a static rope, did the ropes... keep moving? Because that didn't happen in the original Gameboy game. In that one, if you're holding two ropes, neither of them move until you let one of them go.
Good video, but can you please use the mic normally? I don't know why but it bothers me way too much 😅 I know it's some weird meta thing to use mics like that, but it adds nothing to the video and just looks stupid. Otherwise, keep up the good work!

The rope thing is you being bad. It plays like DK Jr.
I think the ropes were maybe programmed to work like DKJr. but I could be totally off

ah yes mario vs. donkey kong, the appetizer for the main course that is the remaster of ttyd
There’s like 4 Nintendo games releasing this year so I have to review what I can lol

To me, if it's just a Remake, even if it has a couple of new worlds, $30 is the most I would pay for it.
Very valid take!

Woo! Almost to 10k subscribers!

The gane is just too Short
Edit: wow... Gane.... Thanks autocorrection. Thank you
50$? Good god...
Shoulda been dk 94 the superior game
Feels like pokemon ruby was a bad choice for a music comparison. I think pokemon sapphire would have been more apt
The sequels kind of ruined the series
Sorry but Get Good
Is it worth $50 if you’re good?
Sorry but get laid, but you wont
@@starerik this is about skill not pricing.
this entire video is a MASSIVE skill issue.
Wow you look like pikmin 2.5 pikmin
Huh?
The $50 price is absolutely criminal but that's what piracy is for ;)
