Sounds of Auber, mixed with Rossini, and a touch of Offenbach, here, but a little earlier. You can hear how they all influenced one-another Thank-you.

@@jawasick Wagner came after. Mayerbeer went to study music and composition in Italy, guess who was at the time the most famous in the county 😉 in this ouverture you can hear, at the ending, some parts that are identical to the ouverture "La cambiale di matrimonio" and other ones of the Italian composer.

A recital was given by Robert Fenton Fowler at Manual Arts High School in March of 1912 (two years after the school opened); the recital included "Addio Terra Nativa --(L'Africana)" by Meyerbeer. It was described as "exceptionally fine..." Just an interesting event in Los Angeles, California at Manual Arts High School. Great selection.

Nineteen (19) Grand Operas, and I do mean GRAND. And here I am, age 70, and I have never seen nor heard a complete opera by him. Overtures and vocal excerpts, of course. As far as the French were concerned, he was a German. As far as the Germans were concerned, he was a Jew. And who has the titanic resources required to put on these operas nowadays, even assuming you can find enough top notch singers to work together? So his works fell into oblivion. And I hear this overture and wish I could here one complete opera of his before I die.

Harry Andruschak There are all kinds of complete performance of Huguenots, Prophète, L'Africaine all over the place. I'm trying to find the old 1970's revival of Le Prophète at the Met with Marilyn Horne as Fidès.
