One of my all-time favorite overtures from the early romantic era, filled with those gorgeous melodies and surprisingly good orchestrations signature to Auber.
This the opera that inspired the Belgian revolution of 1830. During the 5th act, when the singer began to sing "Amour sacré de la patrie", people began to abandon the theater to join the multitude protesting outside against the king.
That's the duet from the second act which is still correct in terms of the inciting moment.

Quelle intensité dramatique ! je vais interpréter cet été une transcription pour orchestre à vents de ce chef d'oeuvre d'ouverture avec l'orchestre d'harmonie de Vichy OHV qui représente la France au festival international d'harmonies d'Innsbruck en Autriche.
It was in 1830 that during the performance of this opera in Brussels, the flame flared up and a rebellion broke out against the regime.
Particularly this song of this opera did it.

La Muette de Portici fut aussi le signal de la révolution napolitaine de 1830...Retour aux origines puisque Auber était normand, natif de Caen et que les Normands ont conquis l'Italie du sud et la Sicile au XIe siècle sous la houlette de Robert Guiscard fils de Tancrède, originaire de Hauteville (aujourd'hui dans le département de la Manche -50-) dont 8 frères et 1 sœur partirent pour l'Italie, le dernier, Roger II, étant devenu roi en 1130.

This was one of the musical pieces to feature in the Overture of White Star Line Repertoire. I presume it's possible it was performed on Titanic by the Band during one of the meal's.
