  • A truly phenomenal performance, Liberace plays some of his favourite Gershwin, his technical ability, particular in the last minute of this clip is outstanding. Enjoy.

    A great showman who ever lived and played the piano like no one else. I would see him perform on TV or guest appearances and each time it was excellent. He showed a warm, friendly personality, as well, which was natural and came easily. Liberace had a long illustrious career and these videos capture those times and bring back memories.. .

    I recently watched a documentary about Liberace. People seem obligated to say he was great show man, but not great pianist. I don’t play piano but come from musical family, I was exposed to beautiful music at early age. I have never heard anything less than great from Liberace, just because he is flamboyant in his presentation, should not negate the wonderful response his music elicits for so many. A person does have the freedom to listen to Rubinstein or Horowitz, if that is their preference. I just wish they would stop insulting those who prefer Liberace.

  • @sanjosemike3137

    I assume Liberace did all of his own arrangements, and this had to include writing the charts out for the orchestra and his conductor. He was a wonderful pianist, and his self-deprecation was NOT deserved. In order to get this to hang-together, it took hours of rehearsing with the conductor and the orchestra. Not unlike performing a "separate concerto" which he put together. I can play the Rhapsody. He was clean in his hand-crossing. And it was completely memorized. Don't for a minute sell that short. It required enormous concentration. He was a wonderful entertainer. I do miss him.

    Liberace's blue sparkling suit is out of this world and perfectly chosen for this magnificent performance. I also would like to point out that Gordon Robinson's conducting could not be better. You can see his silhouette a couple of times. The orchestra is 100% together with the piano. At the last note it seems as if Liberace can feel the downbeat of Mr. Robinson without looking at him. 🎵

    I think this is wonderful. I was actually just reading up on Liberace's past and I can't understand why critics were so tough on him concerning his piano playing. Based on this performance, all I can say is he seems brilliant!

    • @mutsuhanma7807
      @mutsuhanma7807 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +StrangeAngel03 You can't understand because you lack the same knowledge those critics have, and lack the base in which they judged him. But if you enjoy it, then no critic can ever take that away from you.

    • @rodsreel
      @rodsreel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Mutsu Hanma I've read so many bad critics reviews that I came to my conclusion they cash in on a personality and so help keep themselves in a job in their own small minds and small circles. Liberace never played "for the critics" he was an entertainer so the critics really had no place there. Critics don't like to be outside the box they hold so dear, because if people start to ignore them they cease to exist.
      I suppose critics only matter if you value a critics opinion. So many top musicians could be said to play very differently from a taught student of music. It seems if you are taught you never quite find yourself musically I've heard this from some very impressive taught musicians. However a taught musician can impress the critics!!! Interesting all in all. We need all sorts of musicians.

      CRitics are expected or at least were and maybe so and still in some venues to be elitist . They are often wrong of course and sometimes just downright stupid. One of my favorite movies of the 1970's was The Sting and you wouldn't believe the Garbage these penand ink hitmen wrote about it.

    Just decided to look up some of his playing on a whim. Actually don't recall ever hearing him play before and have to say, that is mightily impressive. Rhapsody in Blue is generally a grade 5 (out of six) piece on piano if I recall correctly and what there was of it in there (this was a medley) was extremely well done. From memory.

      The problem with Liberace's personal life is that it led to his premature death.
      I quite enjoyed this vid. but also recognise the truth of the above.
      Another very important point is that if moral judgements are not made then we end up with the excess present in today's world.

His boldness with his clothes etc. was daring in his time, but so was "Aids".If only he hadn't meant Scott, he probably would still be alive today, who knows. I NEVER think of the "bad" about him, but "HOW MUCH GOOD" he did for this world when we needed "good" music. +Alan Durkee Just so you know, you don't just HAVE brain capacity for music. You make it and train it. Kinda like making cement, you water it, turn it and lay it down. And when you rest it hardens...and when you want to expand upon it, you have a good base from which to start building.
      Again, you train in music just like you do in any other profession. It doesn't just COME to you, but there are CLICKING moments in which things just make sense after you've practiced a long time. And THAT requires you to think outside the box.
      Also being the greatest pianist of all time requires you to be judged alongside ALL pianists. And we all know there are people forgotten who could have had legendary technique that surpasses Bach, Liszt, or Chopin that were playing in a brothel and didn't live long enough to be remembered.

      Listen to some Arthur Rubenstein. Carefully. Then you might re-evaluate your "Greatest Pianist of all time" thought. I fully agree that he was extremely talented and musical, but his genius was in showmanship, not transcendent interpretations of the deepest creations of classical composers.

    People mistakenly believe Lee "played by ear." He did not. He carefully crafted music to his own amazing style and committed every piece to his incredible repertoire...by MEMORY. Best of all, he was ALWAYS stunningly capable of translating the "emotion" of each piece correctly and without reservation. He was a Gift from God.

    • @jonathansmith9235

      He certainly wasn't a Michael Feinstein or Leonard Bernstein. He was a Barnum showman/entertainer/grafter/grifter pianist. But, he was one of the best of his trade/genre. The intellectuals would go more for a Victor Borge. Liberace appealed to the masses and purple hair old ladies.

    The critics of the time when he had his 50s Tv show used to diss Liberace and the Public loved him. Of course the Public was right ! The phrase " I cried all the way to the bank " is said to have began after he read a bad review of his show on TV ! Anybody who talks ill of him has to remember he was a piano prodigy as a child but he chose to go the entertainment route and not the Academia one which can be repressive and stuffed shirt !
