My late mother met Liberace in 60s her work entailed meeting and greeting this man . He was wonderful and after never forget her birthday .. amazing man and very kind
THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL INTERVIEW OF LIBERACE! I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED IT! I CAN SEE AND TELL HE IS A VERY NICE KIND GENTLEMAN AND VERY MANNERLY. NOT BAD LOOKING EITHER! :D
I'm not sure what the difference is between a guy like liberace doing this with young men and another guy somewhere else doing it with young women (which is common and was especially in decades past). I'm not here to judge peoples' lifestyles in situations like this - he's miles different than the Weinstein kind of person, and he was genuinely generous and a genius in reacting to almost any question from an interviewer. And a masterful pianist, despite people suggesting there are other better classical pianists (sure there are, but he wasn't purely that, and his state act is something - along with the musicianship- that wasn't bettered or duplicated).
David W there’s no difference it’s equally unacceptable for old men to date 16 year old girls. It’s borderline paedophilic and just weird and predatory. Taking advantage of young impressionable ppl and ruining their futures. It’s fucked up man.
David W he wasn’t that amazing of a pianist.. seems quite tacky to me not much substance. But even if he was a good pianist it doesn’t excuse his actions.
What a nice interview. Not only was he an accomplished artist but also a humble soul that wanted to keep his private life private. Most likely the people that are critical of him in regards to his sexuality have never achieved anything in life and are bitter and envious. His music gave much pleasure to a multitude and his style of performance was a gusto to many. I am still enjoying some of his performances here on youtube and would like to thank all the nice folks that are sharing what they can with all of us. The bitter lemons like Negao Doutrinador, see comment below, do nothing to diminish the talent of Liberace and his legacy. May he rest in peace.
Thank u for those lovely words I tell everybody a d out it in the net that behind the candelabrawas grossly exaggerated Scott Thorson is in jail fur life. Now he us even saying he had 5 year affair with Michael. Jackson ,god bless u xxxxxxx
Scott is a liar he says in his book he was 18 not 16 when he met lee he us now in prison for life also pretending he had, slept with Michael Jackson @Freedom 2020
I never really studied Liberace in an interview..........what strikes me is how honest and down to earth he seemed......quite a pleasant personality..........he appeared to be very comfortable in his skin. Excellent interview. Bravo to him, RIP.
Such an honest person. Completely real. What a pleasant person! A unique interview. Introspective questions. The way Lee answers questions is very compassionate. His foundation helped budding young artists develop their skills through their education.
Years ago, I visited the "Liberace Museum", Las Vegas. It is long closed. Sad. You really have to love this guy. Showmanship? No equal. Style? Well he had it. He was giving the public what they wanted. A GREAT entertainer. He brought classical music to people, in way that nobody has done since. Popular music? That too. there will never be an equal anytime soon.
Such a sincere and honest interview which brought out the best of Liberace and raised my perception of him. Although I already bad great respect for him as a person and performer. A great and simple man who was sadly lost to us far too soon.
Something I notice in the interviews now. Someone will ask him something really caddish, or hurtful, or insolently personal, and it registers on his face immediately, and then he finds a way to very kindly and cordially, gently, respond without getting in a strop the way anyone with that much acclaim and attention normally would. I have to keep this in mind. It would make me a better person.
When asked about the feminist movement notice how he carefully chooses to word his answer. Unless he's talking about himself he doesnt just give yes or no answers, nothing is black and white. I can tell he's not comfortable being asked questions about women, and how he prefers them, and things of that nature. I wish people could've just left his personal life to him but with any mega star we have to put them under a microscope.
Helen Lauer Liberace absolutely had a marvelous gift of diplomacy. I so wished this gentleman would have had a permanent partner to share his private life with. People who are gracious are often taken advantage of.
Oh yes, watch the clip of him on an early David letterman show, LETTERMAN was such a duschbag. Liberace mentioned his brother George’s passing and letterman was ignorant idiot.
Yes, I just saw this clip for the first time and I noticed that on his face when his real name was brought out. He was stunned and just wanted to kick that ladies ass 🤣😂. “He said my friends call me Lee, so I would like for YOU to call me LEE.... Mavissssss. But that stupid lady still didn’t get it. He was mad under that face😡.
Liberace. I know maybe you can’t physically see this. But i know mentally and hopefully your soul can see this. You are. Just wow. I mean there are not human words for you. I just found one of your records from amvets and if i can be honest without getting in trouble i was ready to clock out. If you know what i mean and the soul and beauty and soul you put into your piano. Reminded me that life is just so beautiful. Thank u.
I saw him once. Thank God, in Vegas. Not my choice but I remember his show at the Hilton 45 years on and I am so pleased to say I saw Liberace live. He was truly remarkable. One of the best. A great man and a great Showman
@Freedom 2020 During the early 90s, from 1989 through to 1994, I stayed in Liberace's Palm Springs Villa as a guest of his surviving family and friends. I similarly stayed in his LV mansion. I knew his manager, his house-keeper who was like a second mother to me, his sister Angie and anyone who knew him for the kind man that he was. I also know the truth about Scott. I am assuming you are basing your opinion on the HBO film which was based on Scott's book. Across the years I was in Palm Springs and LV, I never saw anything to support Scott's claims and I was privy to much, including videos of private parties held by Liberace where he appeared as always the gracious host placing the needs of everyone before himself. I never heard anyone, not even local shop owners in the area, say an unkind word about Liberace, and most people who knew him wept openly recounting his many kindnesses to them. As for myself, I was treated with such unconditional love by his family and friends that those days remain the most cherished of my life. Scott once said in an interview some decades ago that he had found God and nothing of what he said about Liberace was true. At the time, Scott was working in a homeless shelter. I can also tell you that the portrayals of everyone I knew personally in the HBO film were nothing like the real people. By the way, Scott was older than 16 when he first met Liberace. He was actually 18 years of age as was verified by him in his own words on page 4, final paragraph, of his book the HBO film was based upon. Neither was anything he wrote about Liberace's housekeeper true, the same housekeeper who was like a second mother to me. Her name was Gladys Luckie, and she died at 100 years of age on my birthday, always grieving the loss of Liberace who she loved deeply. She did not approve of the HBO film because she knew Scott better than most people, having lived with him. If anything, I would suggest that Liberace was Scott's victim. I believe he is back in prison, or he was the last news I heard of him. Not to judge Scott, because everyone is worthy of compassion, but I think you will find Scott has proven his own worst enemy and that is sad. Thank you Freedom 2020 for your comment. I will leave it at that in the belief that everyone is entitled to their opinions. Blessings!
@Freedom 2020 I was never convinced it was Liberace's idea he undergo the surgery. I do not know. As for Liberace's life-style, the LV home was part of his showmanship. The Palm Springs Villa where I mostly stayed, was his private haven. Liberace the private man was much more reserved in demeanour than his stage personality. Whenever he was in residence at Palm Springs, every Friday he would cook meals for the more underprivileged people that would gather at the local church directly across from his home. He not only cooked for them, he served the meals to them. There are so many stories of his kindness and benevolence that is not known. Incidentally, the house that was used in the HBO film was Zsa Zsa Gabor's Bel Air home. It was not Liberace's. I met Liberace here in Australia when I was 13 years of age. The meeting was only for a few minutes but the memory of it has stayed with me a lifetime. I also knew of a nun who met him at a gathering here. She had been badly burnt in an accident. The gathering was in aid of the Australian Opera and held at Lady Fairfax's mansion. When Liberace was made aware of the nun, he asked to meet with her. Liberace took his lunch with her in the library of Lady Fairfax's mansion, so that he could speak with her away from the jostling crowd and press that were there to cover the event. When the nun came out of the library after having dined with Liberace, a reporter asked her what was it like to meet him? She replied: "I have only one person left to meet now!" When the reporter asked who that person was, she said: "God!" That is a true story, and one I recounted when I played at a birthday celebration honouring him in Las Vegas in 1994. My memory of him, and my memories of times spent in the company of his family and friends proved to me but one thing, he was graciousness personified. I believe it was not for nothing that Phyllis Diller said to me when I once met her here, that he was "an angel of a man." Once again Freedom 2020, blessings and best wishes!
Doubtful. Firstly, theres way too many gay showmen, and also he would have been cleaned out with his divorce. Also he lived off of the gay innuendo and gossip. His gayness would be too normal and boring today.
I never appreciated Liberace when he was alive. I remember being 36 years old when he died on Feb 4 1987 and thinking about it as I was going on a ferry to Vancouver with some friends to discuss a documentary idea with CBC Vancouver. It was a big news story. We never discussed it in our meeting with the Hesd of CB Vancouver. It’s only seeing interviews and parts of his performances on TH-cam that I really started to appreciate him as a warm, polite, thoughtful snd kind human being. TH-cam is fantastic for allowing us to learn about things and people we never knew well or were before our time. No other generation of people in history has had this opportunity.
I have been watching a lot of these types of interviews with him lately. He does seem to be a very sweet, kind, talented man. I wish I could find out more about his charities. I know he was generous but wanted to hear some on the charities he gave to. It was sad to know how/why he passed since he tried for so long to keep his personal life private.
Too bad he couldn't tell the whole story the way it really was but I like his honesty, cleverness, dedication, sensitivity, talent and overall touching and inspiring personality. Lee was rare and precious, one of a kind really
+Desmond Riddle Pervert by whose definition? True that he died of disease, but then again, people die from eating too many cheeseburgers, breathing in radon and shaking hands too. So what?
+Desmond Riddle You seem to spend a lot of time thinking about gay sex since you come back to comment on the subject with some frequency. It would appear you have some fascination with the subject.
+Desmond Riddle You just suggested I "come out of the closet". What other reason could there possibly be for someone like yourself to take such a keen interest in the sex life of a male stranger?
+Desmond Riddle Well let's look at the evidence, shall we? Not only did you click on this video of a well-known homosexual performer, but you have continued to visit periodically to leave comments, almost all concerning Liberace's sexuality, and now, you are suggesting that strangers "come out of the closet". Since you do not mention Liberace's musical talent or showmanship, and instead focus entirely on his sexuality, it is clear you have a fixation on gay sex.
+Desmond Riddle You are the one with the obsession, remember? This is why you came to this video in the first place and can't help but comment on irrelevant acts over and over again. This isn't that strange, as many homophobic people are secretly aroused by homosexual imagery or ideas. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8772014
I think he is the first celebrity I hear say that he drinks and smokes moderately because to much would affect him. Especially back then. He is (well was) such a kindly man 😊😊😊
It's an interview, what is she suppose to ask him? What time it is, how many costumes do you own.. Everything everybody knows, He's there to plug a book, celebs do interviews when they have a book, show or new album out, they do the rounds. With nothing to sell or promote they aren't talking
If you are reffering to these questions about women then there should be no consideration..people who believe in him may well wonder about just those questions.. The fact is that Lee declared himself a straight heterosexual before a judge and even got a news paper forced to pay him damages because it claimed he to be a homosexual.
Ash Richards Those were different times. It’s not like today that everyone is coming out of the closet. He couldn’t just do that then. He would have been destroyed in those days. She was definitely somewhat intense with the lady questions though.
@@afvro75 what you say is true but he did not ignore these accusations but did the opposite by seeking publicity and sue a newspaper... It is my belief that when somebody purposely seek justice the truth should be sought...he was there to lie..that is not of good moral values. He should have ignored it and move on..
You can see him become extremely uncomfortable when she starts asking him about women.. hard to watch that part. He must have been sweating bullets during that part, What a shame he couldn't have just been himself back then.
@@scrappypooh1515 Yeah, me too, Liar! We didn't know what gay was at 7 or 8. Get real, apologize to this board and forever regret what you have said. You obviously hate very well, it shows. Now be gone.
Awww Conversation flowed so beautifully until she brings up women. Then you see him struggle . Interviewers could never let that part go. They knew the rumors. Cruel. Loved him. 😢
My mother and her friends loved Liberace and when I was a little kid if Liberace was a guest on a talk show like Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas she would always tune in and even though the interview was always respectful I remember one time he was asked if he was hurt by some people who made fun of him and he said "Sometimes I cry, I cry all the way to the bank" which proves that often, living well is sometimes the best revenge
Too many wonderful words describe this beautiful man and the enormous contribution he has made to both the music and entertainment industries especially at a time when broadcast television was in its infancy and recording tools were much less sophisticated. Many ugly people tortured Liberace his whole life regarding his flamboyant lifestyle and lavish extravagance and despite the hate he often encountered, he still gave us something beautiful that we "music aficionados" can treasure forever. And the hate goes on even to this day though Lee has been gone for the last 32 lost years for all of us who really did know who he was! Listen carefully to his playing - I have never heard him make a mistake (except in one Batman episode, of course). It's time to let Lee rest in peace. . .he deserves it. Truth has spoken!
Someone said in another youtube documentary of Lee that he doesn't think that Lee would be remembered for his music because he doesn't see the cd's in the store. I have a comment for that - that's because the kids all want the cd's with explicit lyrics parental advisory and music cd's to take drugs to or to commit suicide. Maybe we would have saved some lives if they would have been able to listen to Liberace.
Good entertainer who introduced many people to the joys of Classical Piano music. Forget all the bad comments about him, he was gay, so what, so are many in the world including many in the entertainment business. His over the top shows were entertaining and , brought joy and made people laugh so overall he did a good job.
Liane Layman Agree, great showman and he made many people happy watching his over the top antics but played the piano so well, my mum loved his shows !!
It did, I seen the movie about a week after I made that comment, and I totally agree it did paint a very different picture of him, but in all the real life interviews and shows he genuinely comes across as a kind and caring man :)
Such a gentleman....and Michael Douglas didn't even come close to capturing his voice in that vile movie!! If Liberace could read some of the comments he would know that he is beloved and respected gay or not...what a legacy he left and is currently creating. I was revolted by that film but it made me search out videos, iTunes, and some history of this wonderful man who gave so much to the world. RIP Liberace...
Liberace was the epitome of the word "gracious." His life story is the American Dream: using hard work and determination to overcome obstacles and earn success. The amazing level of talent he had is a dramatic contrast to many of those we call "entertainers" today.
Liberace was a master at managing and projecting a carefully crafted persona and hiding his real life. He exuded charisma and love and got it back 1000 times over from his fans.
Getty married at 13:20. Liberace was still keeping his sexual orientation under wraps. I read several of his books. He would usually say his past relationships with women never worked out due to his long concert tours. Lee came from a time when being out as gay would have ruined his career and the female fan base. Johnny Mathis and Barry Manilow came from that same era.
He looked great...healthy with expressive eyes...he so didn't need plastic surgery of any kind...wasn't he in his early 50s here? I love his voice in this interview..Liberace was in a league of his own and while you didn't mention 'The Movie' I consider it to be a total insult to a genuinely nice man!
LONG LIVE THE MAN . GREAT SHOWMANSHIP WHO OPEN UP HIS LOVE FOR THE PIANO AND HIS AUDIENCE. HE LOVED LIFE YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE AND SINCE SEEING THE BEHIND THE CANDELABRA MOVIE THIS OPEN UP HIS PERSONA AND LIFESTYLE TO HIS FANS
I enjoy not only when he plays the piano, even when he talks. He sounds such a nice pesonality and kind person. Such a legend..
Wow. What a guy. So much grace and dignity. Rare these days.
He chose his words so carefully. Lessons to be learned.
He was a natural period !!!!
He is constantly marketing himself. Incredibly intelligent
Indeed.
My late mother met Liberace in 60s her work entailed meeting and greeting this man .
He was wonderful and after never forget her birthday .. amazing man and very kind
This is an intelligent interview, that helps us see the genuine Lee. Who could not like this person.
What a gift he had! Always loved his face, that nice European nose, plus he smiled so much and had such kind eyes. May God rest his soul.
Gisele Marie it's 2018 now, and that's considered racist!!
David James it’s 2019, I’m Polish also, how the fuck is that racist lmao...

Such incredible talent. A real star, and never without a smile on his face. What a lovely man.
Yea too bad he was lonely off stage.
He was a pervy old queen who lured young teenage boys into his life then kicked them out when they got too old for him

I think he is the first celebrity I hear say that he drinks and smokes moderately because to much would affect him. Especially back then. He is (well was) such a kindly man 😊😊😊
Excellent interview ! 😊
Yes, a very gentle man
I just love him ❤️
A gentle soul
Fantastic guy.
This man was an amazing performer, pianist showman and personality. There's not been anyone like him since. God bless you Lee 👍❤️🇬🇧
I agree he was very unique and special. He seemed so sweet too and had a great personality
Wish could have seen museum
he smiles with his eyes, ohhhh cute
A true Gentleman
charming , humble , excited about life person...
Great interview.
What a torture....Leave the man alone, I really like how he handle the questions. Regardless of his personal life I admire and respect him.
The sound quality is unusually good.
Stunning Mavis great interview
Art in his body mind and soul
Its sad that he never made 80 like he said
Such a unique lovely soul...
Aww he seemed like such a nice guy :)
You can see him become extremely uncomfortable when she starts asking him about women.. hard to watch that part. He must have been sweating bullets during that part, What a shame he couldn't have just been himself back then.
I notice the exact same thing, interesting observation.
notice he kept saying "the people" I've dated... etc...
I did that before I came out lol
mike smith I'm not sure why he never married. I guess he was just shy around women
I remember seeing him in tv when i was about 7 or 8..and even as a child i knew he was gay His lifestyle killed him..how sad.
One very well mannered man.
Lovely man!
Fabulous post. I was only 10 when he died but what a wonderful genius Liberace was.
God bless his soul ...
Good entertainer who introduced many people to the joys of Classical Piano music. Forget all the bad comments about him, he was gay, so what, so are many in the world including many in the entertainment business. His over the top shows were entertaining and , brought joy and made people laugh so overall he did a good job.
Yea he really could make people happy with his entertainment.
Liane Layman Agree, great showman and he made many people happy watching his over the top antics but played the piano so well, my mum loved his shows !!
@@lovemetu pim
It did, I seen the movie about a week after I made that comment, and I totally agree it did paint a very different picture of him, but in all the real life interviews and shows he genuinely comes across as a kind and caring man :)
Liberace did an awsome job on his 1966 batman apperance
... I was beside myself, and so was he.
Liberace was great on Batman! His two episodes were the highest-rated in the entire series!
amazing dude
She put him on the spot about his personal life
he's amazing ...so ahead of his time. Always heard his name. But never really knew who he was until I saw Behind the Candelabra
I thought exactly the same
I did know some of Liberace but the book and the movie sure was an eye opener to the real Liberace.
If all you have for reference of this Great Man is that awful movie, you sadly, still really do not know who he was!
Great interview 👍 She did keep pushing the wife question which was not needed. That's the 70's
Love him!
I've been framing my suits on my walls for years....I really like this man's imagination. I wasn't alone.! 😎
It was vile.
Liberace was the epitome of the word "gracious." His life story is the American Dream: using hard work and determination to overcome obstacles and earn success. The amazing level of talent he had is a dramatic contrast to many of those we call "entertainers" today.
I wrote a book about Richard Wattis who played his Butler in the Liberace Show in the late 1960's at ATV studios in Bham !!!!
Liberace was a master at managing and projecting a carefully crafted persona and hiding his real life. He exuded charisma and love and got it back 1000 times over from his fans.
Amazing artist. Unique.
God given talent! Handsome, generous, smart, witty and laughed at himself. Wish he could have lived much longer! ❤ 😢
He was amazing very gentle ,k8nd interesting and of course talented.watching and enjoying in 2023.
The outfits were part of a stage act. It is common place for entertainers to wear costumes when they perform.
I saw him in concert three times. He was Mr. Showmanship.
He is such a sweet man. I did prefer the early part of this interview.
A perfect gentleman. God bless his soul 🙏🏻
Very educated and lovely looking. Epitome of love thru a human. Love Liberace.
