Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2021 😎 UPDATE: I just released a new DRUM LESSON PACK! -> bit.ly/CobusLessons. 5 lessons, 90 minutes, for 27 bucks. It will make you better at tuning drums, mixing drums, I'll show you my practice routine, my worst habits as a self-taught drummer, and teach you one of my favourite linear licks. Thanks for being here!
"Too loud! You gotta chill!" Says everybody every time I even attempt to practice this song. So sad how some people have fallen ignorant to the qualities of rock music.
+Juan Miguel Sanchez Please, don't give up and play as loud as you can. I'm drummer to and what more i play in worship band in my church but they wont break me anyway ;) so keep strong.
+Mates Mrozek Thanks man, I have since found my own time in the music room to play as loud as I can without disrupting. I play drums on worship songs too, just havent played in a full band yet.
dude.....u sound exactly like me. hell it took me a literal year just to be able to practice on my church's set without getting harassed every second to either get permission from someone and/or get off of it. for crying out loud, the set didn't even belong to the church but one person(the drummer himself who's name was tod)!!
This is literally one of my favorite covers of any song on that I've seen. It's a top quality drumming performance coupled with the awesomeness of the Foo Fighters. The overall quality, your skills, the music of the Foo Fighters, and your enthusiasm and energy make so entertaining to watch. I won't exaggerate, I've watched this cover like four times in one sitting in a row. Basically, what I'm saying is, I love you Cobus in the manliest way possible.
That was amazing...i have been watching Cobus for years now and he has grown as a drummer so much...he is exceptionally quick now and his technique has become really really good....the thing i see is this kid spends a huge amount of time on his kit....he knows very well where each piece of equipment is and he can.play freely without having to think as much....his chops are becoming world class.
I have always had this thought going through my head when I've watched your covers. I love the energy you put into the performance. You're not covering, you are performing. I love the energy and passion. Especially, in the Kings and Queens cover.
Being a hardcore Foo Fighters fan and considering The Pretender to be one of the best from them, it was still refreshing to hear this different "spiced" up cover. Nicely done!
Can't believe the stuff this man can do with a song, adding in his own personal touches in places I wouldn't imagine it would fit :S I found some inspiration in this cover in the making of my version of the song, and would really appreciate if anyone who sees this would take a look!
He was missing fills towards the beginning and that disappointed me because that's one of the best parts of the song....but overall he definitely made the song his and didn't just copy it
try cutting the high shelf to take out most of the cymbal characteristics. try cutting the low shelf to take out the resonance from the bass drum. and try to play the song note-for-note to match up with the original drum part, thn just boost the external drum part you played. hope this helped.
Cobus, I am a great fan and you probably don't take requests but this isn't a request so much as a recommendation; the band tool (drummer danny carey) have some insane tracks and I believe that you would enjoy them very much, and I you want to, it would be great if you did a cover
Honestly, not the best Cobus cover. This makes me appreciate Taylor Hawkins so much more... it's so hard to mimic his sound. Technically, this song is not super difficult, but no one drums it as well at Taylor (who Dave Grohl considers to be one of the best rock drummers of all time). Most of Cobus's covers elevate the drumming, but this one not so much.
tjdrummer90 Taylor Hawkins is indeed an absolutely amazing drummer. One of my big idols when it comes to drumming. He has such an original style of drumming. Cheers :)
tjdrummer90 Taylor is GREAT! If I was a kid in my 20's I would be all over his style and passion. Never overplays, amazing energy and stage presence/look...created to play drums in a rock band seen by millions and can sing really good too.
Nailed it on Hawkins...most can't see past technique and miss completely feel and energy...Hawkins IS rock n rock energy! Funny how drummers give the AC/DC guys a pass but with Taylor, they are critical...absurd! Jealously is ugly...
Not sure they give the AC/DC guy (Phil Rudd)a pass. I have seen him in a number of worse drummers ever, but I now what you mean. Some drummers have IT. Some don't (Presentation, style, fills. etc).
I didn't like the cover. You are an amazing drummer, but this song doesn't need that much fills and little tricks. It doesn't add anything, and the vibe of the song isn't great. In this song, the fills should be in the final chorus. This gives more variety in the song, and a build-up to the songs progression.
Totally agree. He also messed up the bass drum pattern in the first verse. The bass drum should play *with* the rhythm guitar, not in between the rhythm guitar's notes.
I love Cobus, but there are times when the drummer needs to calm it back just a tad. Taylor did that, Cobus added some intacacies that I felt were unneccasary
he doesn't, he just mixes his louder and compresses it so that you hear his playing over the original. (plus he's playing along with the original drums to a point, which means he isn't "fighting" whats already there, just adding to it, which is where his mixed & compressed tracks take precidence). (that's according to a response he gave to a video a while back, from what I can remember).
I was just going to say I dont like it, but here is why I was going to say that: If he only had 39 views and 2 subscribeers, I would say 'Well done, man!'. But with so much views, hes almost got a civic duty to be spotless and throw people in the right direction. What he is doing is doing a sub par performance with mainstream production values to it. The good old TV trick.'( It will make a star out of a shmuck kind of thing) Artistically speaking, his playing is all over the shop, and nothing goes with nothing, he is not adding anything to anything except one thing: Publicity, income (views + subs), promotion for DW (cool dudes that rock play DW). I love the guy and want the best for him, but I hate mainstream shit that sells cheese toastie as if it was caviar paste on french farmhouse bread.
Anything, but shallow. I'm just being honest to what I thought and shared it to see if it would ring true with some other folks. Don't mean to offend or take away Cobus' merits in any way.
It's not about views dude, we're musicians after all. Having said that, I'd love to make a fortune off youtube and pay off my house and loans. However, I dont get views, but I get gigs and respect. I'm a much better drummer than Cobus and you all, and that makes me a rich man :) how about that for a shallow view?
I sure wish I was as good as someone that I took the time to comment about how he is not as good as he is painted to be. Sure, that makes sense. I'm the one talking bullshit. I wish I was as good as Steve Jordan, man.
Great cover but the volume mix is awfull, way to loud kick and Toms. The snare doenst really cut through, and your overheads are too quiet, at least that's my opinion
Solid fill at 4:07 lad. Very original. Don't see that kind of off-beat fills too much these days. Well played good sir. You and T-royst need to hook me up with a lesson or two. im stuck on metal as my main playing style right now
Oh wait, I did not notice the date until I saw I already liked this video and realised that was probably 10 years ago!, it still is a great video! This probably showed up in my timeline because of the passing of Taylor Hawkins. What a loss, he'll be missed a lot. This cover does right to his playing
Zogztube Is that so? Probably every song he has covered sounds better with his drumming added to it, and it's the exact same thing with this song! It sounds great, and besides, what's so crappy with pop music? Pop music can be challenging too if you just want it to be. You can turn a completely standard pop song into a progressive pop song, and same goes for any music genre really. I bet you haven't even noticed that Cobus is doing ghost notes on quiet a few "pop crap" songs? That is, if you even know what a ghost note is. Go puke your poop out of your mouth somewhere else or just shut the fuck up! Because you don't know anything about music!
Hello, It was a good couple years back, i can't remember. Cobus has a very good talent in playing drums, but as i was young it made me think i wasn't going to get anywhere, but i think he has changed a bit since then. I just think everyone should be respectful to each other, no matter what standerd you are at playing, thanks. Kieran.
I had to play this song like a year ago, my teacher insisted on me trying to play all of that with one bass drum pedal. :/ I can't imagine how much easier it would be with a double pedal! Ur awesome! :)
Hey man im from S.A. too and i just wanna say congrats on making it this big it gives me hope that we're moving forward and i just wanna say that your drumming is "vrek lekker"
Cobus, you are the best drummer on TH-cam. MeytalCohen tried this song and she was solid at best. You have this tendency to somehow make your drum covers unique and original and I strive to be as creative as you. Fantastic cover.
hey COBUS I was wondering how you get the real drums out of the tracks.. i know for some some tracks there are play-along tracks but for others i really cant find the play alongs... what you do to get the drums out of the song.. so you can boost the volume of your own drums...
The kick sounds beautiful, and the toms are just tuned perfect! I don't know what type of kit you like, but if you think this kit sounds awful, I can judge the one you like as terrible..
Dude you rock. I don't care what anyone else says your an awesome drummer. Makes me want to pick up a pair of sticks again. Love all your covers man but could I make a request? Do a cover of Help is on the way by Rise Against or any song by them. You would rock it dude. Keep up the rad videos!
bro - if i could afford you someday i would love to have your amazing drumming on some of my recordings. great work, and very passionately played. absolutely solid.
One of the main reasons he is a good drummer and one of my favourites is that he doesn't compromise the songs quality by putting in crappy stick flicks and trick!
cobus my name is Alex, i am Brasilian. My dream is to see you playing helloween - eagle fly free. I'm your fan carra and congratulations for your work, improving more than that out of perfection. And woe is capable?
I have been following Cobus ever since his dual cam series. Back then I knew he multi clipped it together and honestly, it didn't bother me. Back then, he had so many supporters who just wanted to hear some good music. Sure, he may not be that good if he has to edit a whole clip out but it's entertaining as f*ck and that's what a video is meant to be, entertainment to distract you from mundane everyday life. And, as a drummer myself, his technique is not shabby and timing is good.
Hey, i don't care about the views or any of that, i'm telling the truth, i came home from a gig one night with my mum and dad and i saw the comment from cobus about 2/3 years ago saying that i was rubbish, i admit that cobus is a brillient drummer, and has a lot of talent, all i'm saying is don't get to big for your boots, and to be respectful to any drummer espesially drummers that have started like me 3/4 years ago.
wow the cymbal roll at the start should be in the actual song it would sound so much better :) also when is the release date for FF's new album in the uk?
cobus hey how are you? Venezuela'm a musician I like your videos ... 're a great drummer with style and excellent technique ... I would like to see some cover songs rock greats like the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith ... would be great to give that touch that you give such great songs
Nice Vids bro! Question, are you taking the drums out of those tracks or do you have a engineer for that? Your backing tracks are alot cleaner than most I have heard. And i'm thinking about doing a few myself, so just curious on how yours are so clean.
Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2021 😎

Watching it now Cobus and playing it along🔥
We love your masterpiece.

2022 now and still watching!!!
July 2024
11 years later, I still come and watch your videos. I hope you’re doing well, brother. Thank you for being a huge inspiration to always keep playing.
Same my friend. Over a decade later and I find myself back here
"Too loud! You gotta chill!" Says everybody every time I even attempt to practice this song.

Luis Suarez plays The Foo Fighters
what did you say ? hahaa, suarez play football
Revo Wardhana it's a joke pal, on account of him looking like Suarez
David Murphy hhh nice joke
David Murphy Actually he looks more like Alvaro Morata
+David Murphy How dare you say that !?..
Cobus is actually good looking, plus he doesn't have those horse teeth xD
This is literally one of my favorite covers of any song on that I've seen. It's a top quality drumming performance coupled with the awesomeness of the Foo Fighters. The overall quality, your skills, the music of the Foo Fighters, and your enthusiasm and energy make so entertaining to watch. I won't exaggerate, I've watched this cover like four times in one sitting in a row.
Basically, what I'm saying is, I love you Cobus in the manliest way possible.
This cover is absolute perfection. Super talented and skilled, brother!!
Needs slightly more energy, but the actual playing is amazing.
This guy not only plays the drums extremely well he also entertains with the drums, thats a talent double up....jaw drop to watch.
Rest In Peace Taylor Hawkins!! Incredible drummer, this song really showcases it
That was amazing...i have been watching Cobus for years now and he has grown as a drummer so much...he is exceptionally quick now and his technique has become really really good....the thing i see is this kid spends a huge amount of time on his kit....he knows very well where each piece of equipment is and he can.play freely without having to think as much....his chops are becoming world class.
Every years, so many new channels doing drum cover. But I'm still return here, to watch legendary and unbeatable Cobus.
Same here!
i love how it looks as if you are just freaking out on the drums and it turns out to be perfect
3:27... This captures the feeling I have everytime I sit behind the drums at home... This is the best cover I feel Ill find ever!
Your playing always brings a huge smile to my face! Cobus for prez!!!!!!!!!
Those cymbals at the start really killed it
What if I say i'm not like the otters
I almost spit out my Miller High Life on my monitor........lulz!
hahahaha
I never bored watching this
Absolutely Tight as! .. & them extra drum roll fillings all around the kit in between the snare & hi-hat & all the cymbals .. Abso Fab
Cobus!!! 🙌🙌🙌 I’m so glad you covered this song!!! RIP Taylor!
Dude how long it took you to learn to play drums like that.
Forevahhh...
Putamerda! 7 anos depois e esse cover continua sendo um dos mais fodas.
The cymbals in this series were mixed WAY too low, especially the crashes and china. The 18" MDM crash is almost completely inaudible at some points.
Will Bainbridge maybe he wanted to emphasize the snare and toms more?
I was thinking the same thing. Think they forgot to mic them up lol.
No idiot, just a mistake
incredible job! What makes you my favorite drummer is how you expressive you are in your playing. It makes it much more entertaining to watch
I don't get why all these people are hating on you cobus, you're a great drummer and I'm still a fan, keep drumming man, you're great!
Can you do some more Avenged Sevenfold soon or some Slipknot?
That would be awesome now considering he has access to much better equipment and his drumming skills has improved so much more!
Can't believe the stuff this man can do with a song, adding in his own personal touches in places I wouldn't imagine it would fit :S I found some inspiration in this cover in the making of my version of the song, and would really appreciate if anyone who sees this would take a look!
if you haven't yet, you should do Everlong
Today I covered this song at school, playing guitar. I like playing in as a band so much! Why arent you in a band jet?
I have been watching your videos since middle school, yet you never cease to amaze me! Well done!!!
3:40 That face!!! XD
xDDDDD
LMAO AHAHAHAHAHA
It's 3:38...

You have to play Red Hot Chili Peppers, my friend...
4:40 The way he says years, sounds like when Donald Trump says: "Huge".
Thanks for making my day :P

read the description below the video, he explains why this cover was not as good as others
It has become a trend to dislike Cobus' covers cause nobody in the right mind could legitimately not like this:P
Im not a drummer but can still sense that this is one difficult songs to drum at. Impressive stuff by Cobus
I didn't like the cover. You are an amazing drummer, but this song doesn't need that much fills and little tricks. It doesn't add anything, and the vibe of the song isn't great. Luis Malvessi he has his own band and plays in gigs aswell , still dont know why your talking all this shit other than you wishing you were this good
I sure wish I was as good as someone that I took the time to comment about how he is not as good as he is painted to be. Sure, that makes sense. I'm the one talking bullshit. I wish I was as good as Steve Jordan, man.

This probably showed up in my timeline because of the passing of Taylor Hawkins. What a loss, he'll be missed a lot. This cover does right to his playing
Sub-fucking-scribed
Kind of ruined the song for me with all of the unnecessary fills and exaggerated showmanship.
but then without them it wouldn't really be a cover
This man is very passionate with what he does, and he does it well.
YOu can't cover and Change a song already perfect. Sorry It sounds awful... keep covering pop crap music you are best at that
Dousch. Nothing else to say
Zogztube Is that so? Probably every song he has covered sounds better with his drumming added to it, and it's the exact same thing with this song! It sounds great, and besides, what's so crappy with pop music? Pop music can be challenging too if you just want it to be.

I don’t know why anyone would give you a thumbs down... typical people always have some shit to complain about. You did awesome man!!
you are a great drummer congratulations ... witty way of playing!!!
I love you for correcting his grammar but Cobus has said in a previous video he doesn't remove the original drums. And to @zackattack94 *Doesn't
You play very well, powerful and precise at the same time!!! Many compliments! :)
Cobus = best internet drummer alive.
Cant wait until you preform live

Well not sure why I never searched Pretender drum cover until now but happy to find this albeit 8 years late but damn awesome rendition.
amazing what advice would you give to an amateur
Dude you rock. I don't care what anyone else says your an awesome drummer. Makes me want to pick up a pair of sticks again. Love all your covers man but could I make a request? Do a cover of Help is on the way by Rise Against or any song by them. You would rock it dude. Keep up the rad videos!
Very good cover! What kind of cymbals do you use? They sound amazing, just like you!
It's great to see 4 cymbals all swaying at the same time!!!! Excellent, as always!
Those toms do... They sound amazing
what the name of your headphones\earplugs in this video?
thanks, great skills buddy
Excellent Cobus!!! what's your drumset?? TAMA??
What can I say? That was a joy to watch...real pleasure. I'm happy to see such talented people outside there:-)
bro - if i could afford you someday i would love to have your amazing drumming on some of my recordings. great work, and very passionately played. absolutely solid.
That was fantastic. You should do more Foo Fighters.
The intensity was incredible!!
LAUS DEO SEMPER INDEED!
Great vidieos, been watching since 2009 cover on "Salvation is here" Hillsongs!!
Keep up the great work!
Mad Cowbell Covers Reactions was here :) 👏👏👏. Great playing and video energy man! You’re featured in our video today at 19:56. :). Cheers mate !
I can't get the audio to sync up properly with the video here. Audio is about a sixteenth note behind. It's this just me?
Great cover - love the double kicks throughout! esp at the finish. Awesome!
And, as a drummer myself, his technique is not shabby and timing is good.
the camera work is awesome! such an amazing drummer :D ive watched some of the lessons hes in by 'Freedrumlessons' such a cool guy!
Great job playing that song!
What drum heads do you use for this song?
cobus hey how are you? Venezuela'm a musician I like your videos ... 're a great drummer with style and excellent technique ... I would like to see some cover songs rock greats like the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith ... would be great to give that touch that you give such great songs
HEY! i just looked at all your vids. i cant find one comment made by COBUS, yes a few negative ones. but NONE by COBUS,
How does he play the bass drum off the beat of everything else? I find that so hard. Can someone give me a link to a video teaching that? Thanks.
Nice Vids bro! Question, are you taking the drums out of those tracks or do you have a engineer for that? Your backing tracks are alot cleaner than most I have heard. And i'm thinking about doing a few myself, so just curious on how yours are so clean.
he mixes the drums over the song after so he only records the drumming then overlays them over the music
COBUS YOU ARE A PERFECT AND GREAT DRUMMER!! RESPECT FOR YOU MY FRIEND!! SUPPORT FROM BELGIUM.
