It's like he said: the "strange" parts (as in never heard or played parts for each drummer) are the hardest because we tend to take time to internalize those details on the surface before we dive in too deep in the process of learning a song. If we're supposed to learn it and play it exactly like it was recorded, then it demands more attention and repetition. Apart from the obvious slips, which are understandably part of getting acquainted with the song structure, he absolutely nailed everything else: power, groove and time, as usual. Todd is a legend.

I find it interesting that it's more obvious than "normal" that he, being an experienced drummer, has a vocabulary of drum moves/sounds/riffs, that he is joining together. They aren't quite the same ones that Taylor used, but Taylor had plenty of time in rehearsals before the recording to choose patterns from his own vocabulary. You can hear the same thing in the rhythm tracks of many songs, particularly RHCP numbers. Similarly for all musicians, I suppose.
This is exactly WHY your mum (and everyone who knew) said "go and practice, practice, practice"! To get the sheer variety of patterns into your head.

These listening and learning exercises are interesting in that they reveal the different approaches that various drummers apply when learning a son on the fly.
Dennis' try was a little different in that he listened to the Tool track without drums and played his own version on top. Domino Santantonio and Todd had the task of learning somebody else's drum part from one listen. If I'm not mistaken, Larnell Lewis had a similar challenge with a Metallica song.
It's revealing to see the differences and similarities in their approaches to learning, processing and retaining the information.
Thank you Drumeo for sharing these insights.
