WHAT an epic song. Whoa. It's one of those songs I can't touch without putting way too many throws tricks in, haha. By far the most air I've ever gotten out of a throw, you might even see the disbelief on my face as i catch it :)
I've read places where people have labelled this song as anti-Christian, referring to the lyrics "To the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah: This is war". Most of you guys know what I believe and what my convictions are, so I would never do a song if I believed the message to be anti-Christian, or pretty much anti any religion. The way I interpret the song (and that specific line) is a warning to anybody reducing the relationship we can have with God to just another religion, a warning to the false prophets, hypocrites: that THIS IS WAR. And that's something I can wholeheartedly agree with.
Just as a sidenote (for the audio engineers and mixer who might be wondering) NO replacement or triggering was done in this mix. Every single stroke you hear was just eq'd, mixed, and compressed; I didn't layer or trigger or replace anything.
This was the last song in the last setlist of this series' recording, and ultimately the last song I recorded in the church in Bloemfontein where it all started in 2006.

To this day, that upstroke at 4:41 is one of my favorite moments watching videos on youtube of all time. I still get goosebumps
I am currently a film major and while filmmaking doesn't have much to do with music, it has a lot to do with filming drum covers and let me tell you: this and all of Cobus's videos has a lot of what I'm learning incorporated into music. From 4:26-4:36 there are about 6 cuts (just in the span of 10 seconds!) showing different angles (each highlighting different drumming grooves) and that all increases the tension building up to the climax of the song. Before that, the pacing of the cuts was steadier and slower. And the cuts are usually on beat, which is also very impactful. He's not only exceptional and passionate as a drummer, he is also very clever and strategic in the way he films himself and edits his footage. Talk about interdisciplinary art forms! Good job, Cobus!
Man, I appreciate it so much when people notice the edits! I spend a ton of time on the edits and trying to make the viewer feel the way I did when I played the song. It’s awesome that you notice, thanks for posting this!

LykABoss he made me start drumming almost 5 years ago! he is my inspiration and I've been playing by ear ever since... 7th grade which was almost 5 years ago!!! I watched his Bat Country cover and Let Get It Started and got hooked since!
Let me explain something. I love this cover. It shows what music can really do. I'm sure most people caught it but at 4:11, 4:24 and at 4:47; you see the smile? What he just did was absolutely amazing and inspiring, and he knows it. The same goes for me when I play guitar. Playing music makes you feel invincible and it is probably the most amazing feeling ever. So I hope that everyone is exposed to playing an instrument or singing at some point in their life just so they can feel that same sensation.

Damn, uploaded 2010, soon 7 years ago. I still remember when Cobus released this cover, I was so excited! I still watch it every now and then, and it always brings a smile to my face and makes me feel awesome! Such energy, such passion.

This is my favorite drum video on youtube. I can watch it on repeat for an hour. I just watched it and the scene from Fast and Furious where they jump the car from one building to another in Dubai. The drum cover made the scene that much more intense.

I just love the raw emotion and PASSION in this cover. You can feel it. 4:35-4:43 is the reason I keep coming back to watch this. One of my most favorite drum covers on the internet definitely.

Honestly, I think Cobus is a much better drummer than Luke Holland. They are both incredible drummers. But when I watch Cobus drum, there is always emotion and you can see it. When Luke drums you just see a machine, and he over complicates things. Sometimes the beauty of a song is just how well the drums are structured. Cobus adds those fills that blend. Luke's just sound forced. Especially the new Word Alive single.
Couldn't agree more. Although I would say Cobus' style isn't that he does things that are incredibly hard (but definitely NOT easy) but that he does them with such passion and flow that it's one, seamless piece of perfection every time. You can tell he takes the time to study what he's covering in that he harnesses the "feel" of every song perfectly. Excellent as a result.
