Can you guys go over *why* I need to apply sunscreen every two hours? Like what happens to the sunscreen to make it ineffective after 2 hours? Why doesn't this happen in the bottle? Are there ways to make it last longer so folx who can't afford to go through a bottle of sunscreen every week can still protect their skin?
Good question, been wondering myself. I don’t know if the ingredients themselves stop working after two hours, but I imagine other factors like sweat, sebum, varying weather conditions, and clothes etc touching the area, could result in loss of protection throughout the day.
It is mostly if you are active, swim, sweat, in rain,... it wears off. Some sunscreens are more water resistant than others. They mostly insist on this because you can`t always trust how it gives full protection under all conditions. It is hard to reapply under all circumstances, but if you can reapply sometime around noon or soon after, you will likely be fine. The second application is said to make it all last longer, but I have not seen that many scientific reports on this.
The idea is that if you are exposed to direct sun for that time, sweating, getting wet (pool, lake, etc) the protective benefits wear down or wear off. If you’re sitting in an office 8 hours a day, I would say you probably don’t have to reapply. Now, if you’re going for a 2hr run after work and it’s summer or live in an area where UV is high (hello my fellow Southerners) then maybe. Most of us aren’t doing that though realistically.
I think if you're not directly in the sun for an extended period, it is ok. But last time I went to the beach I loaded my face with spf, after spending the whole day there tho, I still got tan (I'm the type that tans instead of getting red but it's essentially the same effect on the skin)
What a PERFECT video, in merely ten minutes! I take exceptional care of my skin, but always had looming questions about mixing stuff. You guys are the BEST!
My rule... listen to your skin... I have used them together but usually I divide them between my morning and night routines not to overload my skin. One must have enough time for all those products too. Thanks for sharing, your videos are a big help, I learned a lot 🙏
I’m so thankful for the channel as well as other dermatologist based channels who actually know what they’re talking about. Random people with no background will go viral telling you that you can and can’t do something in skincare. That’s not only annoying but just dangerous form of misinformation 🙄
@DallasNatureLover I think it depends. There are also loads of Dermatologists who have been sending their patients to Estheticians, because they don't know what to do for them. And they're supposed to be better at Skin Care than us, but many of these Esties have took these patients and gave them great products that help with their issues. Let's not generalize as if every Derm knows what they're doing(not that im saying every single Estie does, there are some who arent that knowledgable either), these 2 just happen to be extremely excellent at their job. It really depends on the person and where you're seeking care.
Thank you for talking about this! I once told someone Salicylic Acid wasn’t really a BHA and they looked at me like I was insane. I thoroughly enjoy you guys so much.
Finally! The answer to the question I've been asking and thinking about. I'm glad my experiment will not harm my skin coz I didn't know if I can put Salicylic Acid face wash, BHA toner and Retinol in one routine. So far, my skin is okay and my skin is a lot better. ^^
Thank you for this!! I was so confused and scared of starting my skin care bc of so many products and what you could or couldn't mix, this video totally simplified it!!
Thanks for breaking this information down 🙏🏽 I’ve used some of these ingredients together and I’ve never had any issues, but my skin is not sensitive. 🥰🙏🏽😎
Thank for correcting those misconceptions. I was always not convinced with the information that the influencer share as a fact regarding the skin. Everything really depends on the skin. I did use a lot of active separately like one active for a period of time, but I was not getting the needed results like other people with day this magic product changed my skin. That’s why I started mixing active in the same routine while checking for irritation and listening to my skin. Everyone has different skin with different tolerances to actives.
Nothing has been as effective as my mix of moisturiser, retinol and salicylic acid serums. I immediately see the difference if I miss more than 2 nights in a week. Niacinamide is often mixed in there too, as I find that base works well with my skin. Day time is sunscreen only.
For me benzoyl peroxide spot treatment is the only thing that gets rid of acne for me but now the acne is gone I’m going to mix in a retinol salicylic acid combination for the scars at night
I love their nuanced take. There's so much fear mongering out there, and claims are just made with no nuance. I've even seen dermatologists fear monger online, so we need more people like these two doctors!
Omg! Thank you for making this video! I got a new moisturizer that has hyaluronic acid in it, I use during the day but I have not been using it at night because I thought you weren’t supposed to mix it with retinols. And ever since I seen your video Previously about why you might use vitamin C at night, it makes so much sense! And while I’m at it, I also want to give a big huge thank you to both of you from a long ago previous video that you did about psoriasis and salicylic acid and recommending T sal from Neutrogena, and rotating it with the T gel, which I have used in the past, and never felt like worked, … this has changed my life! Lol my scalp has never been better and my hair has never been better and I’m not embarrassed anymore that someone’s going to see a huge white patch coming out of my hairline, because it no longer exists! So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! You guys are the best!
I use Cerave SA cleanser at night with my compound prescription with retinoid, vitamin C & kojic acid. In the morning skincare I use adapelene with soothing ingredients. I just started slowly like they recommended in other videos and now I use them every night. I make sure to observe my skin as my skin is combination & sensitive.
I am on my third year of using tretinoin. I built my tolerance this year and can now comfortably combine Salicylic Acid toner and Tretinoin at least once a week in the same routine. My skin "shines bright like diamond" the next day. 😅😅😅 Dont get disappointed when the answer is "it depends" because patience is a talent (never a virtue) 😁
I used to be able to use tretinoin with other acids but then had a time when I didn’t use it so now need to build tolerance but first snake skin time 😂
I have a nighttime skincare routine featuring Inkey List SA cleanser, followed by Vichy Vitamin C, No.7 1% retinol, and Cerave PM lotion. I was initially unsure if this would be excessive, but I introduced each product slowly to observe my skin's reaction. It's been effective for my oily skin with light hyperpigmentation. I don’t have a sensitive skin. I also undergo PRP microneedling or pico laser treatments biannually. And, of course, I diligently use sunscreen every single day, also reapply it a couple more times throughout the day. I've received numerous compliments on my skin texture and its healthy glow. ☺️
THIS WAS SO USEFUL! THANK YOU. I just bought CeraVe's Blemish Control cleanser which has Salicylic acid and I already have in my skin care routine CeraVe's retinol, and they're actually both from the same line, that's specific por acne-prone skin so my head was spinning thinking they messed up putting in the same line two ingredients that people say you cannot mix!
Uh…I want the book! I love love LOVE diagrams. And there’s so much info on what never to mix and this cleared up a lot for me personally, so thank you.
for me retinol or exfoliating actives around the eyes is very helpful because if i don't used it, there would be a mini pimple around there. and sometimes im layering exfo+retinol as spot treatment for my acne because it heals faster, but only for night time routine of course😂
I’m 53 and have very dry skin and was diagnosed with psoriasis at 10 years old. I currently take Otezla to help it. So far I’ve aged pretty well despite dry skin. I’m scared to start a skincare routine to prevent aging on my sensitive skin. Please do a video on skin care just for people with dry/sensitive skin.
This may be too late but have you tried Krave Beauty? They have some great products for sensitive skin. I have dry/sensitive skin and also get eczema and psoriasis. I really like their cleanser and the great barrier relief. All their products are fragrance free!
I stopped coloring my hair over a year ago due to severe skin irritation. My skin reacted worse as I got older. I wonder why 🤔 Do you guys know? My grays are coming in nicely and I have received numerous compliments from the young to the very old lol. Wish I could’ve been braver yrs ago lol Your grays are coming in nicely too Dr Shah! I love seeing ppl embracing their grays 💕😁
Thank you so much for explaining this! I see it all over don’t use this with this but no one ever explains why and I’m a person that needs it explained. Also glad you guys said there are no’s in skincare because I agree 100% skin care is personalized for everyone. We’re all different so whatever works for you go for it 😊
This video came out at the perfect time! I have VERY dry skin and also live in a very dry climate that gets extremely cold in the winter time (we're talking like -30C/-22F at times)... while also being one of the sunniest places in Canada. So I'm starting to rejig my routine in anticipation of that. I started dabbling in a very low potency retinol serum from The Ordinary but found using it on alternating days with 10% Lactic Acid was still too drying (and I'll likely drop the LA back to 5% once I run out). I believe it was in one of your videos that I saw a suggestion that using a retinol cream could be better for us dry folks so I'm currently waiting on an order of Paula's Choice Resist Intensive Repair Cream to kind of get me back into the retinol world. I appreciate the debunking of some of these more extreme "myths' or overgeneralizations, while also acknowledging that I'll probably still need to use retinol and lactic acid on alternating evenings as my skin can already feel a little tight on a rotation.
Id also recommended a higher healthy fat diet. I used to have insanely dry skin. Id pile on moisturizer- some really expensive ones at that- and Id PEEL like crazy. When I started eating a ton of almonds, and avocado my skin completely changed. Id go as far as saying I'm combo to oily now.
I have been using salicylic acid and retin-a together at night to fight my unbelievably stubborn acne since June of this year. In my 15 years of dealing with acne my skin has never looked better. I'm so glad I stopped listening to skin care influences who kept saying you couldn't mix these actives.
I don't think you mentioned it, but you can also use Azelaic Acid and Retinol. Also, if you have been sensitive to retinol, I've seen a few dermatologists saying that after using azelaic acid for several months, your skin might be able to tolerate retinol without any adverse side effects. But I suggest you research this on your own instead of taking my word for it. And just to be safe, wear sunscreen when using actives as many of them can increase sensitivity to sunlight, causing more sun damage, which just counteracts what you're trying to achieve with actives. And I hate how underrated Azelaic Acid is. It is a very, very good alternative to retinol, especially if you have more sensitive skin, rosacea, etc. The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% - Try it out. I believe it is also (from what I've researched or heard about it from derms online) less sensitive to sunlight but you should still apply sunscreen and reapply
Bha (salysilic acid) + retinoid = yes, depends on if it irritates you Vitamin c + retinol = evening routine, preferably 1 product that has them together and let them set/dry Don't use retinol in light = yes and no (must be light stable) What about copper peptides??
Thank you for the clarification. I’ve been struggling with this problem. Basically, most people on the internet say not to do it or not to mix it, but it has worked for me for a year now. So when this started popping up on my FYP, I got really worried. HAHAHA. For context, I used: LUXE ORGANIX: Retinol + Bakuchiol GARNIER: Bright Complete Anti Acne Serum (This contains Vitamin C, Salicylic Acid, Niacinamide, and AHA) - basically, all ingredients that are said to be incompatible with retinol.
I'm glad you all said that skincare is personal because you also have TH-camrs who don't have sensitive skin and they shave every day or they can use three different types of exfoliants in one routine. And some people like me can't copy their routine because if I did my skin would have a fit.
The only thing i question here is the retinol and vitamin c one.. so as far as i know the reason they're not to be mixed is not because they react to each other but because they work at pretty specific pH levels and theyre not the same. This is referring to ascorbic acid specifically because it requires a rather acidic pH to be stable whereas the retinol (or tretinoin rather) needs a slightly higher pH. The place where this would then not apply would be with, say, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate because that form of vitamin c is oil soluble therefore doesnt have a pH to begin with so that becomes irrelevant. I sometimes use tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate with my tretinoin for that reason but not typically. If you even see this comment could you clarify on this specifically regarding the pH issue?
Wow, life changing, honesty 😅 so many dermatologists say not to mix those, not so many say why. Also my adapolene product contains a warming in prescription about not mixing it with salysilic acid and turns out it's not about some chemical reaction between those 2. Those 'cautious ' combos also confused me in your other videos and now I have the reason to trust you and try some of them as I see my skin tolerates adapolene but acne not going away fully 💔
With my sensitive skin I get lower irritation doing Glycolic and Tretinoin on opposite nights. So I still do superoxide dismutase, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, sunscreen in the morning, but at night I alternate AHA/BHA (e.g. glycolic, mandelic, lactic, azelaic, tranexamic, salicylic, mali, tartaric, kojic, etc., etc. ) + peptides then Rx Tretinoin 0.5, + peptides on opposite nights. Although I have used the gentler azelaic/mandelic/lactic and Tretinoin together without issue before. Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, and ceramides are basically in everything these days (!!) so that's on point. Lately I'm digging the Prequel Vitamin C , and the Epilogic peptide cream. REALLY looking forward to the Doctorly book!
Thing is for me when I started using Retin a, I don’t need any other active ingredients. Just antioxidants under sunscreen. You really don’t need much when you have Tretinoin- Gold skin care ingredient.
2:08 i do use retinol and triple peel formula of khiel’s. I just have to make sure i apply moisturizer in between. But my skin is still as fine and dandy. 3:10 i used vitamin C in the morning(the stabilized formula) and retinol in the evening. My skin is still fine and dandy..
OMG THANK YOU! For finally saying more than "you can't use it". Why? there are so many people who watch youtube vidoes who are not the beginners in skincare anymore and appreaciate more advanced skincares and 90% of the content is for the beginners with super sensitive skin types ;D I use l-ascorbic acide, wait 2 min and apply tretinoin with no irritation but that is because I am into skincare for years and my skin is acclimated. But there are more people like me who want to maximize their routines instead of " keeping it simple" and we are curious how to combine actives. Question - regular peptides (not copper) - okey to mix with anything? :) Also, what about copper peptides plus other antioxidants ? (ordinary says not to use their copper with antioxidants because you can get an orange hue on the face, because of some chemical reaction, I wonder does it make it ineffective then>?)
I recently started learning a lot more about different skin care ingredients and upping my skincare game now that I'm in my 30s. I love your videos and your friendship! You mentioned something that I have been curious about--how long would you recommend letting Vitamin C or a retinoid sit/absorb in your skin before moving on to the next step?
I have very oily, acne prone skin. I used to do this routine that had my skin glowing. It had allllll the actives. My skin has never looked better, but ppl kept saying it was too much, too many actives, and I’m not seeing the damage now but it’s there and I will see it in the future. So I tried to alternate actives, but then that was too much trouble, and too high maintenance, so it was hard to do it consistently. You can tell the difference- I have texture, occasional pimples, and the accompanying discoloration. I am going back to my all out, all actives routine! Thanks for the tips!
I use Vitamin C and retinol together. I start with vitamin C and leave a time-lapse of at least 30 minutes (for skin pH rebalance) and apply my Retinol followed by a moisturizer 20 minutes later. PS. know your skin tolerance first
I suggest to you make a video clarifying what can or cannot mix because for example vitamin C there are many types (ascorbic acid, tetrahecyldecyl ascorbate, ascorbyl glucoside...), retinoids (retinoic acid, retinal, retinol, retinyl), many types of acids (AHA, BHA, PHA) and others active ingredients (niacinamide, peptides...)
I absolutely love you two. When I found you guys I shared your videos with my wife and now we watch "every" video. Whoever does your video editing is amazing! I think the balance of serious information that helps so many with out being overloading along with your natural charisma, sense of humor, and abilities to poke fun at each other is the winning formula. P.S. Dr. Shah cannot move anywhere that prohibits the both of you from making these videos together. That's a firm RULE. P.P.S. Why did Dr. Maxwell not partner with you on "Remedy"? He just couldn't spare the budget from his surfing and sun tan lotion budget? 😂
I'm really glad to find out alterno is light-stable! I'm more consistent with my routine in the morning, so being able to use it then is gonna be great!
I use Tretinoin ( Retin A).at night, and after about 20 minutes, I use a moisturizer. Usually Aquaphor or Cerave. I've not had any problem with peeling. I do have dry skin
@@gabrielagregory1017 yes. I know this because I have asked my dermatologist as well as DRMTLGY the company. There are copper peptides in their Needle-Less serum. You can’t use them at the same time because the copper peptides and vitamin c became less effective or erase all their efficacy.
this !!!!! sooo many people don't know that you can't mix certain things!!!! and if you start using not well known products like tranexamic acid per say, it can be really hard to find the answers online to see what you can and can't mix. also they'll be articles that contradict the next article. so it can be sooo difficult figuring out how to incorporate your skincare products
Question for Dr. Luke Josiah Maxfield: Can you tell us what exactly you are doing with your skin, now you look so much younger when I discovered your channel a few years ago.
Learned it hard way - started to apply altreno tretinoin to my eyelids- got extremely dry eyes almost instantly. Although applying it to my under eyes doesn’t seem to irritate or do any harm
Haha! Here I was, thinking you shouldn't mix certain things because it would cause an explosion on my face 😂 Like if you mix certain household detergents it can be dangerous, I thought mixing skin products was also dangerous 😂 Now I understand better
I stand wholeheartedly with Dr. L.J with what he said at the beginning of the video. It's absolutely brilliant and I couldn't have agreed to it better ❤
I use carrot seed oil and mix it with a bit of rosehip seed oil on my face every morning. I let it sit for about an hour while getting ready then put a regular light face cream that has a bit of irish sea moss to firm it up, then a bit of sunblock powder. Have been doing this for over 10 years. I'm in my sixties and it works really well at reducing the signs of sun damage. Some skin care experts would say no but it works for me. Basically if it works for you go for it.
I am using Face fact retinol serum which is formulated with vitamin C daily. And yes my stubborn hyperpigmentation skin has been improved with that formulation
I’ve been using AlphaCare, alphahydroxy cleanser on my face for years, plus Curology with trentinoin, niacinamide, and transamic acid. I might be spell it wrong but you know what I mean. And I’ve been fine and I have very sensitive skin. I feel like I need the AlphaCare cleanser in my tea zone big-time I’m 60 years old.
I think education is always your best mentor. Learn your skin, learn the products, learn the science, learn the how, when, where, how much, how little, how often and why?
@parth5848 Eating healthy and exercise I somewhat assumed would be covered by my point on education. As for not studying the science, I respectfully disagree.
Would you guys do a video on Methylene Blue in skin care? I would love to hear what you have to say about this ingredient. You guys are brilliant and gorgeous too
Regarding retinol and light induced degradation, does the type of light matter? For instance, LED from a lamp / bulb vs overhead fluorescent vs sunlight? Assuming sunlight is the worst, with home and office lighting, how’s the impact on the degradation? And what about impact from blue light from backlit devices like TVs, monitors, tablets, smartphones? Do colored light bulbs matter for this? Yes, I know I’m overthinking it, and the rabbit hole can go deep, but I think it’s a valid question. I don’t spend much time outdoors, and use room darkening curtains, so most of the light exposure I do get comes from various lamp sources.
My skin is totally happy with a SA cleanser, 1% retinol and 2% salicylic acid in my evening routine, in fact it's helped so much with my acne and my skins never been better.
I used inisfree repair retinol ampoule and Anua Niacinamide 10% +TXA 4% Dark Spot Correcting Serum 3 times a week and it makes my skin look glowy right on the next day.
Does castor oil react with tretinoin? A solubility study showed that tretinoin is best soluble in castor oil (0.60g/100ml), followed by isopropyl myristate, maize oil, Miglyol 812 and olive oil, respectively, 0.35, 0.30, 0.29 and 0.22g/100ml.
Can I layer niacinamide and vitamin c together? There's too many myths about mixing them together and if I can what should I apply first vitamin c or niacinamide? Also can I use vitamin c during my nightime skin care routine?
Vitamin c is preferable at night since the sun can reduce its efficacy during the day. If you use vitamin c in the morning make sure you put a tonne of spf on.
OLAY has niacinamide plus vitamin c in one bottle and im using it during daytime because im using retinol at night...but yes im using spf50++ even im just inside the house
I noticed that the vitamin C that I have peeled off the dead skin just like the retinol does. I wouldn’t want to use both because then my skin would definitely peel badly and it would definitely burn if you go in the sun. I barely use the retinol and prefer the vitamin C and I love my cosRX BHA and AHA alternating them.. the best moisturizer I have tried has been the snail mucin by cosRX…k beauty products are so good!! I just had to do a lot of research to find the perfect regime.
Skincare companies are to blame for a lot of this, like The Ordinary - telling people to not use certain products together but not stating whether the issue is possible irritation or is that one product will cancel out the other. After doing a lot of research online to see what cosmetic chemists and scientific papers show, I use a 10% glycolic acid serum before tretinoin 2-3 nights a week, and a copper peptide before tretinoin the other nights.
@@suzmik I use The Ordinary Copper Peptide product. I don’t use any HA serums because 1- a lot of products already have hyaluronic acid in them and 2 - glycerin seems to be better than HA when humidity is low. Moisturizing products, whether with glycerin or HA or both, are best used after using products with active ingredients like tretinoin so they don’t interfere with absorption by the skin of the actives. After the tretinoin has fully absorbed I mix a few drops of squalene oil with La Roche Posay Double Repair Moisturizer in my palm, then apply to my face. In winter when the air is even more dry I use CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream after the tretinoin as I need a heavier moisturizer when the heat is running in my house. I think it’s important to be flexible about my skincare routine based on weather (humidity) and just how my skin is feeling. If humidity is high I don’t mix the squalane oil with the Double Repair Moisturizer.
It's not all about the ingredients, but also how it is formulated. In my opinion to give a fair chance to a product, you have to follow the given instructions. Then experiment at your owns risks.
The Ordinary has gotten bad press in the past from people jumping into high potency products with little knowledge or preparation. I remember Buzzfeed posting an article several years ago about a young woman who used one of their higher retinol products and it destroyed her skin. Really gruesome stuff... but also user error. It seemed unlikely that she had ever done any patch testing or gradually worked her way up to that potency. I've found that historically, their product descriptions were NOT well-written for a general audience and it often felt like you need a chemistry degree to decipher half of what they wrote. It's gotten much better but I'm not surprised that so many people felt confused by their website.
thank you ! I am mature man, well, I started to use the facial products, I have tired to use it appropriately but sometimes I am confused. thanks for your videos, if I have questions about it, hope you can tell me. thanks again.
I’d love a video on some skin care tips for midnight shift workers. It’s so confusing. Some of the info about the time you should use certain ingredients seems to be backwards for people who work at night. Like, if I sleep in a room with sunlight should I wear sunscreen to bed? Or if I work at night but work in front of a bright computer screen which ingredients should I not use? It’s all so much to keep up with or try to find information on.
no need to wear sunscreen while you sleep during the day, it'll just wipe off on your pillows and sheets. as long as you have a curtain and aren't sleeping directly underneath a window you should be fine with just a simple routine including cleansing, any actives, and moisturizer (making sure they have enough time to absorb into your skin before you hit the bed). if you'd like you can use your retinols and a sunscreen that protects against blue light during the night while you're working on your computer. hope this helps! signed, a skincare obsessive
@@marissabee1376 Thank you! I always wonder about when I should use retinols and vitamin c because my days are backwards from most peoples. It’s hard to find dedicated videos on skin care for overnight workers and it’s all so confusing!
Can we layer Vit C and snail mucin in the morning routine? I love the glow when both are layered. I ask this question because Snail mucin seems to have some copper peptides in it ( not sure if it’s true and if yes, to what extent)
Make sure apply snail mucin on damp skin and vit c on dry skin. So cleanse, let it dry, vit c, let it dry, thermal water/mist then snail mucin, other serum if you want, moisturizer, sunscreen
@@CC-px6ikHmmm. I’ve been applying the snail mucin first, then the vitamin C. Is there a reason, that you know of, that is should be the order you suggested?
@@TrishAA82 I was talking about l ascorbic acid / pure form of vitamin c which is a bit finicky. Its unstable, easliy loses potency when exposes to light, air, and water. So apply on dry skin after washing is best. And wait a few minutes before applying other products.
I use neutrogena’s retinol and spf day cream. I’m rubbish at putting anything on my face at night. I’ve tried for years and always end up forgetting or not being bothered! So a retinol to use in the day is good for me.
I have used prescription tretinoin around my lower eyelids and side area of eyes, on my face, neck, chest, hands and forearms and hands every night for over three years. I never miss a night.
I use SA and Retinol in the same evening, in fact I also mix SA with Panoxyl during washing my face, and I barely get irritated, so I'm one of those people who can tolerate it.
Makes sense that retinol and vitamin c can be used together. Am using a serum/cream that has retinyl palmitate and ascorbic acid. I suppose its ok I use my vitamin c miceller cleanser in the evening right before my retinyl palmitate cream?
@@lindabenson1764 I guess it depends on who you listen to because I've heard other experts say if you wait 30 minutes it's ok. My skin looks so much better when I do it. These Doctors also say there are really no rules, everyone's skin is different.
I would like to know the recommendation about vitamin c and benzoyl peroxide. I use my bpo in the morning and I'd like to incorporate a vitamin c in my routine.

Skincare is so personalized! Thanks for sharing your take on the “no rules” just know your needs and goals.
Give your editor a raise, I'm impressed with these transitions and lil notes in the corner lol
I love their nuanced take. There's so much fear mongering out there, and claims are just made with no nuance. I've even seen dermatologists fear monger online, so we need more people like these two doctors!
Love watching your videos. Not only do you not seem to be burnt out but you even seem excited still about skincare and the Derm world.
Thank you! I’ve been using bha and retinal and it seems to work fine! I love nuanced convos about skincare and this was super educational, thanks!
ماهو العلاج الذي قمت باستعماله؟
I used to be able to use tretinoin with other acids but then had a time when I didn’t use it so now need to build tolerance but first snake skin time 😂
Same. On my second year, Miss Skin tolerated vit C. On the third, my fav glyco toner✨✨✨✨✨
@@kat284What do you mean snake skin time?
@@osamabinladen824It peels or purges at first but in time it stops.
Nah babe patience is a skill, you build it. Talent is something ur born with. And believe me I was not born with patience, I toiled on building it!
In other words, listen to the DOCTORS instead of TT Twits! Thank-you to the real experts: Dr. Maxfield & Dr. Shah!!
Listening to both of you doctors have helped me want to take better care of my skin.
Wish I could’ve been braver yrs ago lol
Your grays are coming in nicely too Dr Shah! I love seeing ppl embracing their grays
💕😁
Me too! My scalp got more sensitive and I had to eliminate fragrance from my haircare
Going gray is amazing!! Best thing i ever did was stop coloring. Scalp is so much happier and hair is so healthy!
I'm so glad I stopped listening to skin care influences who kept saying you couldn't mix these actives.
true same for me as well! my skin looks great
I don't think you mentioned it, but you can also use Azelaic Acid and Retinol.
I've also read advice about not mixing products (I forget which) because of pH rather than the potential for irritation
Bha (salysilic acid) + retinoid = yes, depends on if it irritates you
Vitamin c + retinol = evening routine, preferably 1 product that has them together and let them set/dry
Don't use retinol in light = yes and no (must be light stable)
What about copper peptides??
Seconded! Copper peptides!
Thank you for the clarification. I’ve been struggling with this problem. Basically, most people on the internet say not to do it or not to mix it, but it has worked for me for a year now. So when this started popping up on my FYP, I got really worried. HAHAHA.
For context, I used:
LUXE ORGANIX: Retinol + Bakuchiol
GARNIER: Bright Complete Anti Acne Serum (This contains Vitamin C, Salicylic Acid, Niacinamide, and AHA) - basically, all ingredients that are said to be incompatible with retinol.
I needed this video so badly. I was so confused about what I could and could not mix with my Retinoid
I'm glad you all said that skincare is personal because you also have TH-camrs who don't have sensitive skin and they shave every day or they can use three different types of exfoliants in one routine. And some people like me can't copy their routine because if I did my skin would have a fit.
Yes! I have sensitive skin, so If i copied them 3-exfoliat-youtubers, i probably wouldn’t even have any skin left to speak of.
Again, very individualised, especially for people who use tretinoin for acne - it is often not enough as the only treatment modality.
Can you guys please speak on the efficacy of sunscreen sprays! Love for you guys to try the nakedsundays one!
THANKS for breaking it down for us! So many skincare products out there becomes darn confusing!!
If formulated well, vit c and retinol can be great in 1 product. Im having a lab make one actually
I heard about the retinol sandwich... To avoid peeling, you can layer with moisturizer and any type of retinol over it.
I use Tretinoin ( Retin A).at night, and after about 20 minutes, I use a moisturizer. Usually Aquaphor or Cerave. I've not had any problem with peeling. I do have dry skin
My Favorite Dermatologist. I followed and watched all yours videos now my skin is so good and almost glass skin. ☺️ +weekly I go to face spa
Please explain copper peptides and layering it with other actives ❤
Second!
Can you use Vitamin c in the morning and copper peptides at night?
And my dr gave me tretinoin+ vitamin c to mix and apply at night...and seriously my skin drastically changed in only 15 days the whole new skin
Thank you for the link to affordable products in your description box. Gonna give these a try
Lol same here. Thought I would melt my face off or something
Me toooooo 😂😂
And my skin tags started diminishing
I have dry acne prone skin w/an oily nose. I like to keep it simple and simply not mix. My skin is happy. 😊
I use a retinol and a bha, but I'm acne prone and oily. Seems fine for me.
I have put tretinoin on my eyelids and around my eyes for a long time now with no irritation
Loved this video. Great information, as always. Thanks!
Thank you guys for all the amazing info!
One thing that I always wonder in regards to light when we speak about retinol, is it just sunlight or even indoors light?
Would you guys do a video on Methylene Blue in skin care? I would love to hear what you have to say about this ingredient. You guys are brilliant and gorgeous too
I'm not young, still have oily skin, almost wrinkle free face and I pile on everything. Haven't tried sand blasting yet though.
Where have you two gems been all my life? I’m so glad I found your channel! Such amazing info accessible for everyone! Thank you!
Thankyou both so very much ❤, this was a fantastic guides for the future xx
I noticed that the vitamin C that I have peeled off the dead skin just like the retinol does. I wouldn’t want to use both because then my skin would definitely peel badly and it would definitely burn if you go in the sun. I barely use the retinol and prefer the vitamin C and I love my cosRX BHA and AHA alternating them.. the best moisturizer I have tried has been the snail mucin by cosRX…k beauty products are so good!! I just had to do a lot of research to find the perfect regime.
what vitamin c do you use?
Skincare companies are to blame for a lot of this, like The Ordinary - telling people to not use certain products together but not stating whether the issue is possible irritation or is that one product will cancel out the other. After doing a lot of research online to see what cosmetic chemists and scientific papers show, I use a 10% glycolic acid serum before tretinoin 2-3 nights a week, and a copper peptide before tretinoin the other nights.
Are there specific brands you use for GA serum and copper peptides?
@@DallasNatureLover thank you so much! I’m going to give your routine a try.
I must have super tough skin as I mix and layer lots of stuff but ALWAYS seal with Squalane and Argan Oil
Great video and useful diagram. Thank you.
Can we layer Vit C and snail mucin in the morning routine? I love the glow when both are layered. I ask this question because Snail mucin seems to have some copper peptides in it ( not sure if it’s true and if yes, to what extent)
After I put on Vit C I wait 30 minutes and then I do Copper Peptides and the rest of my routine.
I love the snail product
I use retinol 0.1% in the evening, but i use the ordinary retinoid elmusion together with vitamin c in daytime
I love this video! Can you do a video on vitamin C products? I’m so lost
Another derm said Retinol can be worn during the day if you use sunblock
8:47 please do a video explaining this 🙏🏼
I have used prescription tretinoin around my lower eyelids and side area of eyes, on my face, neck, chest, hands and forearms and hands every night for over three years. I never miss a night.
Seal the treti with any moisturizer or occlusive and put a pair of cotton🧤on😴. You' re welcome, good morning😜.
I use SA and Retinol in the same evening, in fact I also mix SA with Panoxyl during washing my face, and I barely get irritated, so I'm one of those people who can tolerate it.
Please make a video about pregnancy safe skincare! What is forbidden, what's recommended...? Thank you!
Right on time! I was literally googling this last night and confused myself again lol
Skincare is such a barrier.
Makes sense that retinol and vitamin c can be used together. Am using a serum/cream that has retinyl palmitate and ascorbic acid.
I suppose its ok I use my vitamin c miceller cleanser in the evening right before my retinyl palmitate cream?
what could be combined with copper peptides???
I use tretinoin then wait 30 minutes and then use copper peptides. Do the same in the morning with Vit C and copper peptides.
Paulinevisuals: in another video, the Doctors said that it was likely that Vit. C & copper peptides would deactivate each other.
@@lindabenson1764 I guess it depends on who you listen to because I've heard other experts say if you wait 30 minutes it's ok. My skin looks so much better when I do it. These Doctors also say there are really no rules, everyone's skin is different.
THANK YOU. It's so annoying how ubiquitous "never! because irritation" is.
I would like to know the recommendation about vitamin c and benzoyl peroxide. I use my bpo in the morning and I'd like to incorporate a vitamin c in my routine.
I needed this. Thank you, docs. 🇯🇲
