Two new devices from Dell have put me in probably the oddest position I've ever been in as a reviewer of tech devices. For the first time ever, I'm forced to tell general consumers across the board that a device isn't a good fit for them. The strange part is these Chromebooks aren't bad and aren't average. They're probably just not for you.

These devices are meant to appeal to CIOs & those in charge of IT operations, not consumers. So your title is accurate.
Normal Chromebooks aren’t available in 50+ countries, don’t have upgradeability/serviceability in their design, & don’t have the global support options these do. That’s why you’re paying extra, for those elements of utility. These are essentially a 5000 series Latitude, just running Chrome OS.
The comments around the keyboard & trackpad are fair, but if you’re working in virtualized environments, those elements will come in handy (especially the F row keys).

In case anyone is wandering what you're talking about: NordVPN was compromised, knew about it for a while, kept it secret from their customers until the story broke and they spun it to seem as if nothing major occured

These Chromebooks are really really good if you need to access virtual desktop for Windows because of the F function keys. And, these laptops are sold on eBay, where I got mine, with really low prices around $300-$500. Great prices if you ask me. They are totally upgradable. However, 99% of the time, you would find 720p HD screen 5400. So, I spent another $80 from Amazon for a 1080p screen, and what an awesome Chromebook it became. I definitely recommend to upgrade to FHD screen. The HD screen is just awful.

It seems to me, and I could be wrong, that they just took an old Latitiude shell and threw a NVME hard drive into them.
Any Chromebook I've ever owned NEVER had the Ethernet port. I always had to use WiFi or add an Ethernet dongle if I wanted to be hard-wired.

Well for a nerd like me that rocks a Latitude 7400, it's a perfect companion. Sure, these things are not cheap. Not cheap at all. But we are talking about an i5 little quad core cpu, 8gb of ram and 256gb of storage.. and a 1080p screen all running essentially a browser. It's not just fast and powerful, it's a tank with massive flexibility. But is it for most people? lol.. no. That I agree. But if you demand power and lots of it this is a very good option. It's just a very expensive option. I wish Dell would release a XPS like chrome device. I would pay a premium for it. This isn't a bad screen but the reviewer is absolutely correct about the screen in that this is a 5000 series device, your not going to get a super fantastic screen. It's not too far off my 7400 that has the low power IPS option, but it's certainly not the same screen.

A great video as always just a shame manufacturers produce chrome books for enterprise only. Everyone including the public appreciate top notch security these days and rock solid build... who wouldn’t want that?

How fast should the battery health of a Chromebook diminish? Is in normal to go from 98% to 82% in less than 2 months of regular use?

i could see a use case for these Chromeboks with a software developer running IDEs such as Android Studio in crostini where the extra processor performance and fast ssd read / write times would be a real benefit. But I agree this is not your average consumer and it is also a pity the product is let down by a poor display.

Thanks for the review. There are far more affordable, mil-spec rated, enterprise-grade Chromebooks available. The Lenovo Chromebook 14E for example. Available with touch or non-touch displays, backlit or not, etc. We recently began deploying the Lenove 14E in our enterprise.

I'm noticing that CHROME UNBOXED is not answering any comments, so this goes out to other YT commenters in this vid... what WOULD BE the best top of the line Chromebook for a power user? I would like to do some full-featured MS Exel work (writing macros in VBA) but that's about it on the Windows side.

There's some interesting merchandising going on with the US Dell.com page where he's getting those numbers from. If you go to the UK site or just call up a sales rep (which is how most commercial deals are done anyways) you'll see the starting price for these is actually around $599 for the 14" clamshell & $799 for the 13" 2n1; which is actually a bit cheaper than their Windows variants.

Screens screens screens..... every chromebook review seems to be the same: underwhelming screens. I refuse to buy any more chromebooks unless and until they have good screens. A screen quality the same as my Galaxy tab 5se would be fine. No, it seems the makers think chromebook users like dull screens. Go figure.

Omg I nearly spat my coffee out when you said $1500 ! My Dell 7000 chrome book 2 in 1 I bought on your recommendation was $450. I have found moving to chrome a bit of a challenge. Even just connecting to a brother laser printer made me want to smash it to bits. It just would not work through the USB A / C. I had to buy an app to print pdf and other stuff. I'm looking at the new Samsung QLED laptops. Is this something you might review ?

    • @MaisonPulaski

Not sure if you were aware of this (you probably are now): printing from ChromeOS / Chromebooks is not available via a wired connection. You cannot plug a printer into any Chromebook. You use Google Cloud Print to print through ChromeOS. Apparently there have been some updates and printing is supposed to be better and you may not even have to set things up using Google Cloud Print. I finally gave up on ChromeOS as my main operating system a few years ago and just use the Chrome browser on macOS. It has been a much better fit for my needs. Here's a decent article on prining with ChromeOS: www.theverge.com/2019/4/17/18312056/chromebook-printer-digital-pictures-how-to-connect-cloud

    • @BeckyAnn6879
      @BeckyAnn6879 5 ปีที่แล้ว

It's not your Chromebook; it's your printer. Brother printers are a complete NIGHTMARE to connect to anything. I tried to help walk an ex-friend through connecting her Brother printer to her Linux mint system wirelessly and it was dang near IMPOSSIBLE to do so. She finally gave up and just uses it through USB.
We have an HP 3830 wireless printer and any Chromebook we had (and the Linux machines we have) pick it right up and work flawlessly.

I have the C434 and the pixel book go. Here (in Edmonton) I got the C434 for 549$ and the go for 879$ (without counting taxes and env fee). The C434 is heavy, trackpad is wobbly, touch screen is too rough to scroll, speakers suck. The pixel book go has superb speakers, seamless touch and trackpad.
C434 I like the keyboard more than the PBGO's hush keys. Battery on PBGO is stellar. C434 is also good in battery but got around 6-7 hrs on typing constantly. Brightness on both is meh. But C434 is plenty a time cheaper and build is so sturdy. Except heavy to use as a tab.

Should I remind you? The spying from Google kinda keeps reaching more horrendous levels the more you use a Chromebook. I have these new books for testing them out to see if I can use them for university all day without charging. But kinda makes me wanna buy some small spec laptop and install linux and use libre since typing is all I do. Only thing keeping me from using Linux is I am only accustomed with Ubuntu and even there if some driver problems show up it's strenuous to solve them hence making it a headache.

@@kristiandawe85 that is Chrome OS I'm not sure if you actually went to the page and read it:) -- The company Neverware that "builds" this version of Chrome OS is authorized and endorsed by Google. Again this is for you to use almost any pc to install Chrome OS on.
For all those who don't want the cheap Chromebooks because they need more power or for the power user who needs still just a little bit more performance, that's the point of Neverware building their version of Chrome OS. Your not losing anything only gaining. Hope that clears up any misconceptions. Please take time to look at their website and videos.

Ok, you're still advertising Nord VPN and not even commenting about their security breach and cover up. At this point, it's pretty much unforgivable and I'm going to have to unsubscribe. I love your content, but in my opinion it's completely invalidated by your continued pushing of a compromised and unnecessary service on your viewers. It means that you can't be trusted to provide reliable information any more.

Great review, although I will never buy Chromebook as it is data collection tool for google. Using Thinkpad t450s which I bought used for very low price and just put linux on it. About Your "sponsor" - 2000 users of Nord had their data recently harvest from compromised server so saying they keeping data save and secure is a bit not exactly truthful, which is changing my opinion about certain TH-camrs. (I did just unsubscribed, sorry)

"Dell's new Latitude Chromebook Enterprise Devices Weren't Made For You"
Isn't that why "Enterprise" and the target market is part of the name?
This is like Car & Driver coming out with an article tells us why a Cube Van is made for you....the average consumer since they are not going to be using a Cube Van for what it is really for.
Love the videos, but was this a legit video? Or did you have to come up with something so you could get one out on a schedule?

Car & Drive also reviews Lamborghinis and 95-9% of there reader base can’t afford one. So yea. Their are consumers the buy enterprise grade computers thinking that they will be better than consumer grade computer. Sometime that is true, other times, like with this one, it is not.
