It looks like chromebooks are ten times better than they were two years ago. At this rate windows are going to be a thing of the past in a few years since chromebook or so much easier to use.
I purchased a used Acer 516GE (1st Gen) that I've now owned for several months and I was able to get the free 12 months AI Premium Plan. So you don't need to buy a new Chromebook. Any existing Chromebook Plus laptop is eligible. In fact, the 516 GE wasn't even a Chromebook Plus model when it was first released a year ago. It was deemed a Chromebook Plus by Google well after.
I picked up the same device a few months back, mostly so I could use Xbox Flight Simulator 😁. Well I did use it for that, but find myself using it for so many other things. Somehow I missed the 12 month deal because I didn't initially accept it, not a big deal still enjoy the device.
@@LonSeidmanIf you don't get it automatically on an older Plus, simply powerwash it and you'll get the new features. They seem to track the activation, not the date of purchase.
@@thomasraukamp I’ve read the same thing too. In fact, at first I thought I couldn’t get it. So then I power washed my 516 GE and it worked. That said, I realized that you had to scroll an inside text before I got to the bottom of the section where you “submit”. Was it there before I power washed it and I just missed it the first time? I don’t know. But either way I was able to get it after I power washed my device.
I'm a fan of Chrome OS, but the change in Manifest v3, which reduces the functionality of ad blockers, is a real blow. Additionally, if there's no opt-out for the AI, that's a deal breaker for me. I'm very sorry to see the AI frenzy take over all of computing.
My only real reservation with Chromebooks these days, which have been getting really interesting, is what Google Chrome has done with manifest V3. Because the mobile versions of Firefox are the only ones available on a Chromebook and they don't run nearly as well as you would want in a desktop setting. But there are no desktop versions of Firefox. So now you're stuck with chrome but ublock origin loses a lot of its efficacy and functionality because of the changes to manifest v3. It's a shame because if I was choosing to buy a Chromebook that would probably be the biggest annoyance... Am I not going to be able to run the proper ubo? I hate the fact that Chromecast such a huge market share and I, I'm kind of bummed out that Firefox stopped making the desktop version of the browser on Chromebook.

Text transcribe from the microphone? Yes- but the one demoed here from the audio system I believe is limited to plus certified machines. The new photo features require plus but do also work on some android phones. Key remapping is on other Chromebooks but recording is not

What's the purpose behind these companies such as Apple and Microsoft who are so slow to implement such basic features to their products? Something as simple as a laptop having a touchscreen in 2024 is pathetic and not being able to use a USB controller for a game on a laptop? I don't care what kind of laptop it is if you're having to deal with annoying little trip ups all the time.
AI will have arrived for me when I can tell TH-cam to remove every use of the words “actual(ly)” and “itself” from the audio of every video I open!!! I once heard a guy say “I put the actual lens on the actual camera itself” and my brain nearly broke. 😂
Jif?! I'm hovering over unsubscribe 😂. Nice video. This makes the Plus models a little more worth it. Unfortunately in the k12 space, they are not obtainable in bulk at MSRP. I got quoted $60 over from cdwg.
I picked up a chromebook plus from costco for $300 a couple months ago. Great little machine. Highly recommend for those with modest computing needs

chromebook plus is starting to interest me.
Thanks for the new features update.
I love Chromebooks! I just wish the charging system and the trackpad were more robust.

Awesome! They mentioned at the press event that it was going to be new activations only but great to hear it's been expanded beyond that.

I am hesitant to powerwash. Maybe worth it for a clean start after 10 years of use.
Hey Lon!, Thanks for posting this video

I always told you Chrome would include a maple syrup brother that confuses his tech brother with tech plus syrup stuff.
my current chromebook which isnt eligble for chromebook plus has live audio transcribing too
Under rated pc.
I have been installing ChromeOS Flex on non Windows 11 laptops with 120GB SSD for cheap from Amazon then donating them with my Local Rotary club.

Google is charging $19.99 a month for the AI features, you only get them free for 12 months with a new Chromebook Plus purchase.
The OS level features remain after the subscription. The ones specific to workspace apps require the subscription.

there's never been a "desktop version of Firefox on Chrome." You can run the Linux version of Firefox if you turn on Linux.
I run Brave and Librewolf (hardened FF variant) in the Linux container.

Google really dropped the ball with Pixelbooks.
Too bad these improvements are not coming to Duet 5.
I love my Duet 5. But Lenovo underpowered it sadly.
