McDonald’s used to have “gold standard” fries until 1990 - that’s when they went from frying in beef tallow to the current vegetable oil… The best fries today are found at ma & pa places! Cheers!
%100 can't agree more than both of these statements. Checkers fries are my gold standard, and the chili-cheese tater tots at sonic are a close second in this category!
The best fries in my town are at a burger/dog joint that is not a chain restaurant. Their fries are perfectly crispy outside, fluffy inside, and just greasy enough. Every order is fried while you wait, so there are no old or stale ones.
So guys, I would call Five Guys my go to best fries since they are made from fresh potatoes and cooked in peanut oil. But the best fries I ever had are from a place called Thrashers on the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD, fresh potatoes and peanut oil with a bit of malt vinegar and Old Bay seasoning. They are in Delaware, too. Shake Shack crinkle cut fries are very good, too. Great job, guys, keep on trucking and trying.
As an American my advice for something like what happened at Sonic is to call them out on it. "Excuse me, do you weigh them? Because I'm wondering why I only got half a box?" Or, "we're doing a comparison of fries in the area so put your best foot forward." On the other hand, a fifty year old working the window is likely his second job because this is CA and doesn't give a sh*t.
Well I just have to say fries from lamb Weston, the really thin long extra crispy fries they have in the frozen section are my favorite. Sorry they're just great. I bake them in the oven till they're really crispy and then I dip them in sauces. They have a lot of flavor, very crispy and cheap. I like to keep them in my freezer because it's a very quick go-to. That company specializes in different types of fries. So the ones I'm talking about don't taste anything like any fries that they make for McDonald's. McDonald's is still doing the cooking.
I LOVE the crinkle fries at Arby's and the fries at Dairy Queen - but I prefer squishy fries to crispy fries. I also love Whataburger fries with Whataburger ketchup. YUM!!
In Indiana a small fry at most of these range between $1-$3 depending on the chain at most of these. Yesss Rallys fries are the best, they are so good! You used to get really big portions there too but now its pretty small.
You're absolutely right! Prices can vary quite a bit, but Rally's fries definitely stand out. It's a shame that the portions have gotten smaller, though!
Pro tip, when you order without salt you're sure to get them hot and fresh. Of course they won't taste the same until you add salt but I've been to some places where they put too much salt on. What the waffle fries were missing was Chick-fil-A sauce. It's so popular they now sell it in grocery stores. Also available in stores in the frozen section are Rally's fries and Arby's curly fries. I often get a bag of the Rally's fries and eat them when I get home with hamburgers from other places that have fries that aren't as good like White Castle. White Castle has great sliders but their fries are almost always undercooked and soggy.
And youre making the fast food workers pissed off when they have to make your special fries, only for you to just add the salt afterwards anyways....plus you're holding up everyone else in line behind you for 5 more minutes. Please stop being an entitled d bag
I always loved Checkers fries. No Checkers in Oklahoma but you can buy them frozen in Walmart. Chic Fil A waffle fries with their Honey Roasted BBQ sauce are great too.
@user-wr9ej6xe4j True I live in East Tennessee, however if I tried those things maybe I would know more maybe one day, my husband is a truck driver and before he gets to retire years down the road he wants to take me out west and see the places he loves while he was a truck driver he loves the dessert and the snow that sometimes he has seen his favorite part is the sun raise or setting in Utah and around or near Arizona and he wants me to go out west and for one more time and then he'll retire from trucking industry he has been local for a while now but when we date he used to go to California and Arizona and other areas out west I've never been to west I've only been to PA and the Carolinas I'm originally from NC so I will keep them in mind to try
Omg. I literally have to force myself to eat fries whenever I order a burger. I do eat them perhaps out of habit or association, (you know, burger and fries, biscuits and gravy, cookies and milk, bacon and eggs, peanut butter and jelly etc.. lol.) But they taste so much better when you make them at home. I always order fries with no salt, that way they have to make a fresh batch. Works every time. Just ask for a packet of salt on the side so that you can season them yourself. There weren't a lot of fast food places near me when I grew up back in the 70's so I never quite developed the habit of eating fast food too regularly. I'd easily choose a sandwich or Chinese fast food over burgers, burritos or pizza. But it sure is fun watching you two Brits make the rounds across the vast and varied food landscape of America. You bring us smiles every week. ♥ Mila and Rich in Seattle. ♥
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Mila and Rich! It’s interesting how our food habits shape over time. Making fries at home is definitely a game changer!
Popeyes and Checker's/Rally's have the BEST FRIES, bar none. My mom LOVES Checker's/Rally's fries. She is not big on fries either. She buys a chili dog, soda and fries EVERY time she goes to Checker's.
For me, when hot and fresh McDonald’s will always be #1, however Chick-fil-A waffle fries definitely with Polynesian dipping sauce (delicious )is #2. Checkers ( Rally’s) has nicely seasoned fries unfortunately we no longer have them in our area. My least favorite for any fast food is Sonic. A little advice for the future, if you do another fast food taste test please download the apps before purchasing especially with the high cost of fast food in California. For example fries on the McDonald’s app are $1.49 for a large fry, there is also Free fry Friday.
We don't eat a lot of fast food, but Sonic is on the way to Home Depot, so the kids and I always stop for onion rings and Cherry Limeades if it is happy hour.
@@miamired1 I've literally never had a bad batch of fries from Checker's in the 30+ years I've been eating there. My guess is your local spot or wherever you are eating them from, is just a bad spot specifically. Everyone I know loves Checker's fries and would agree they are the 2nd best fries in the game (Nathan's fries will always be #1 for me, hands down).
Hey...I think you didn't give Sonic a fair chance. They have more than the crinkle cut fries...they also have regular fries and the most popular tots. Figure that you tried both versions at Arby's you should for Sonic. Love you guys!
Good evening y'all. I hope you're well! I haven't even watched the video yet but I can tell you as a fast food expert. Rally's or some places they're called checkers fries are number one. Arby's curly you have to add a cup of cheddar on number two. And it goes downhill from there for me 😁😀😁😀 love your videos! ❤
Yesterday I had KFC fries with the KFC sauce and I loved it. Once every two weeks I will get that. The fries are coated, crisp, and tasty. The KFC sauce instead of the ketchup elevates it.
At chicfila, fries are used to dip into the many unique and delicious sauces they have. And honestly no one is eating fries from anywhere without dipping them into something. Be it ketchup, mayo, chifila sauce, mustard or bbq sauce. etc
The AI ordering thing at Rallys..which kept messing up my order, is precisely why I moved on and ordered from a competitor. P.S. it was lunch time and no one else was in the drive thru line...wonder why?
I agree, Five Guys fries are the only ones I like. They are cut and cooked on the premises, nothing precooked or frozen. Yes they are more pricey, but they're worth it.
Baker's french fries taste very close to the old McDonalds fry's. But Baker's are only in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Just 1 county over. 🤔🤗😉
Arguably the best fast food fry experience is the Animal Style Fries at In-N-Out, although that's judging not only the fries but the cheese, the caramelized onions, the animal sauce...
The pricing seems about twice the price we pay in central Missouri. I live in a small town so the choices are limited but Harfy's seems to have decent fries. Of course I I bring my meal home, so I pop the fries in the air fryer briefly to get them hot and it also crisps them.🤷♂️
The reason fast food, in California is so expensive, the current legislation to make the fast food industry pay a "living wage" is causing the food prices to go up almost 100%. Along with the ev mandates and gas prices. I'm sure there are a few other factors if anybody knows them.
Small fries at Wendy's in SLC, UT are .99 cents before taxes. Five guys little fries are 4.99 before tax here. Chick-Fil-A is 2.49 for a medium. I'm pretty sure California fast food minimum wages are why the cost is more.
Arby's crinkle cut fries definitely have their own unique charm! It's interesting how the quality can vary from store to store, but when they're hot, they're hard to beat!
I recognized the location or each restaurant you guys were at but you guys forgot Jack in the Box, Carl's Jr, Del Taco, and the Habit. The Habit has both sweet potato fries and regular also their fried green beans are awesome 👌
Sometimes I just watch to hear Nicola laugh- when she laughs, she makes my hard days better. The only fries I absolutely love enough to wait in line are Thrasher's fries and those are East Coast beach fries- Ocean CIty, Maryland. As for price, I have never ever bought just a small order of fries by themselves and not in a combo with a sandwich or burger, so I cannot tell you about the value. HEY- have you actually never had a Cherry Limeade at Sonic? And I thought of this before Andrew just said you had never been to Sonic- GAAAAH. GO TO SONIC. I love their onion rings and chili cheese cony combo. (I answered that way too fast.) People don't go to Sonic for fries- choose onion rings and/or tots.
Rally's and 5 Guys cajun are both for sure the best. It's a little sad more people dont have Rally's/Checkers around. I'm in Cleveland, our fries (and everything else) are about half the California price. But these places are all ripping people off now! Inflation my ass! Theyre the same french fries. Their ingredient cost may have gone up about 5 cents for these places!
Hidden gem alert: Dino's Gyros/Dino's Mediterranean. Not only a hidden gem, I personally rate them #1 above everywhere else and it isn't particularly close. I was happy to see that the one that I used to frequent in San Diego is still there!
Absolutely! Any fries 😂😂 Thick fries are definitely a favorite in the UK. They’re the perfect combination of crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside!
I don't get fast food hardly ever anymore compared to when I was younger, so I'm a bit out of the game, but I can't imagine Massachusetts fry prices being a whole hell of a lot different from Cali, which is infuriating. Ang as for my favorite, I'd have to go with McDonald's. When they're done right, they're still pretty good. But as someone else pointed out, they don't hold a candle to the 80's and early 90's McDonald's fries
So,are you adding on a wheel alignment to each drive thu order price?Shrinkflation is a real thing in a lot of areas.A lot of echo freak cities are zoning out new drive thrus in their local building codes.A lot of the fry suppliers count on the sauce to help deliver the taste. You need a by itself score and a sauce /ketchup score from each place too
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s interesting to see how drive-thru experiences are evolving, and your ideas on scoring sauces is definitely worth trying to plan!
I love you dearly 😘!! Your videos are always amazing and fun for me 😂!! Wendy's has a good fry to me. I don't eat much fast food, but Wendy's chicken sandwich and french fries are an awesome choice,a couple of times a year
and in california (thank you gov newscum) the minimum wage at fast food places is now $20/hr..... i had a hamburger fry and drink at wendys the other day.. $15... outrageous......and no Jack in the Box down in San Diego????
My local Checkers didn't used to put salt on their fries because they were pre seasoned & I loved that. Lately, they've started dumping salt on them, making them taste like everybody else's fries. I've quit ordering fries from Checkers because even ordering them with no salt, they still come out salty. 🤮
You didn't try In-N-Out, but they don't usually get top rankings for fries. They're probably the most "potato-y" of the fries, the least greasy, and the freshest. They're also lower-priced than other chains, so overall a good value, especially if you really like the potato flavor. There's also Jack-In-the-Box and Carl's Jr. None of them will beat Five Guys, but worth trying.
You're absolutely right! In-N-Out's fries definitely have their own unique charm, and it's always fun to explore the different flavors each place offers. Thanks for watching
@@thebritstry By the way, I only recently started watching your videos thanks to TH-cam recommendations. I continue watching because you two have such great chemistry and enthusiasm. Nicola especially has such positive vibes and energy, but even better is how both of you compliment each other and finish each other's sentences. It makes it a pleasure to watch you both. Besides that, maybe in the future you could make a video explaining how you both can eat so much yet manage to stay slim 🙂.
Love your sweatshirt that says Wifey 💜. I don’t really have a favorite French fries from a fast food restaurant and there are some I haven’t tried. But I love dipping McDonald’s fries I their BBQ sauce. And people are probably going to get mad at me but I like dipping my Chick Fil A fries in their honey mustard sauce.
I don't like Sonic for anything except for a cherry limeade with nerds and jolly rancher pieces. Or I might get their jalapeno cheddar peppers dipped in ranch. Heard their loaded tots are really good however I have never had them.
Wendy’s used to have great fries up until a couple years ago and I think it was right after the pandemic they switched to a battered type of french fry, which is just not good. I actually thought Wendy’s had better fries than McDonald’s at one point.
McDonald’s used to have “gold standard” fries until 1990 - that’s when they went from frying in beef tallow to the current vegetable oil… The best fries today are found at ma & pa places! Cheers!
Also check the ingredients of McDonald's fries there's barely any potato amongst the chems nowadays
Julia Child commented on that same fact as well haha
California is the most expensive state for just about everything
Rallys/Checkers has my favorite fries, I go to Sonic to for tater tots.
%100 can't agree more than both of these statements. Checkers fries are my gold standard, and the chili-cheese tater tots at sonic are a close second in this category!
Back in Texas at least Sonic had the best onion rings in town, when they were done in fresh oil.
The best fries in my town are at a burger/dog joint that is not a chain restaurant. Their fries are perfectly crispy outside, fluffy inside, and just greasy enough. Every order is fried while you wait, so there are no old or stale ones.
Five Guys you have to ask for double cooked fries so they're crispy.
I get my Five Guys double cooked for crispiness.
Nahh, no way. Checkers KILLS 5guys in the flavor and crispy department lol
I'm glad to see everyone saying Checkers/Rallys in the comments. The best fries are from a Detroit coney island with coney sauce on top though.
It's always great to see everyone sharing their favorite fry spots! Coney sauce on fries sounds delicious-we'll have to try it out in the future!
Rally's fries are also in the freezer section of the grocery store. They are the best of the grocery store fries. Oven baked.
As an American my advice for something like what happened at Sonic is to call them out on it. "Excuse me, do you weigh them? Because I'm wondering why I only got half a box?"
Or, "we're doing a comparison of fries in the area so put your best foot forward."
On the other hand, a fifty year old working the window is likely his second job because this is CA and doesn't give a sh*t.
I'd have gone right back & asked if I could get the rest of my fries. I've had to do that at several places.
fun fact: McDonald fries are made by a company named Lamb Wesson, a brand you can find in your supermarket freezer section.
Well I just have to say fries from lamb Weston, the really thin long extra crispy fries they have in the frozen section are my favorite. Sorry they're just great. Rallys/Checkers has already been reigning champions for years for their seasoned fries, and curly fries!
Your right! They were surprisingly good!

We need Checkers & Weinershnitzel. Used to be a Weinershnitzel in Del City, but 😢 it hasn't been there in forever.
Wendy's fries are best dipped in the chocolate frosty
Thats cause you dont have a Rally's/Checkers near you lol

That's the first time I have seen crinkle cut fries at Sonic. I prefer the tator tots. Also must have been the jr. fries.
Sonic is good for the Chili cheese dog and the banana split. 😊
NO trip to Sonic is complete without a Cherry Limeade!
Rally's fries are fantastic! Try a big buford!!!
I've never seen a Sonic with a drive-thru before.

5 guys does have the more wholesome fries and they're known for putting extra in the bag
Yes they have giant portions! Thanks for watching
Best fast food fries , Rally's / Checkers!
I agree with your winner 100 percent! 5 guys is the only place I'll go to just for fries.
It's hard to argue with those fries-they're truly in a league of their own! Glad you agree!

They were very good!
Each time I have had fries at Checkers, they have tasted like they were fried yesterday and refried. Everyone I know agrees with me on this.

The best fries I've ever had is Wienerschnitzle ❤❤. It's amazing! ❤❤❤

I can see how the AI ordering could get your order wrong. I struggle with AI on the phone, it never seems to understand what I am saying!
I agree five guys got a superior fry. The price is also helped because you asked for a small and 3 to 4 people can eat off of it. 😂 thank you
I agree, Five Guys fries are the only ones I like. They are cut and cooked on the premises, nothing precooked or frozen. Yes they are more pricey, but they're worth it.

Ah. The American staple. Fast food fries. From just a fast food standpoint I'd go with Arby's curly fries and CFAs Waffle Fries
Arby's curly fries are my weakness. Maybe it's because it's the only fast food I really had growing up but they just hit the spot every time.

Thank you for sharing your love for Dino's Gyros! We will definitely give it a look up and give it a try!😊
@@thebritstry Clairemont Town Square, right by the movie theater 😉
All of these fast food places are so inconsistent that you can never be sure what you’re going to get!
Thats the real shame about fast food! thanks for watching
so many to choose from. lol so many styles. you guys like thick fries right?
Absolutely! Any fries 😂😂 Thick fries are definitely a favorite in the UK. They’re the perfect combination of crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside!
Love Nicola's shirt! Cute!
My favorite fries are FIVE GUYS fries. But with Wendy's get a chocolate frostie to dip your fries in
Oh yes! That sounds delicious!
Checkers...all day er day.
3.50 for a small fry at McDonalds is CRIMINAL! Wow.
Your so right! Thanks for watching
I don't eat much fast food, but Wendy's chicken sandwich and french fries are an awesome choice,a couple of times a year
Thank you for your very kind words 😊
Always asking for fresh fries at any fast food restaurant! Actually ask for everything that u can to b make fresh/ready to order!
and in california (thank you gov newscum) the minimum wage at fast food places is now $20/hr..... i had a hamburger fry and drink at wendys the other day.. $15... outrageous......and no Jack in the Box down in San Diego????
$2.09. In Newberry SC
My local Checkers didn't used to put salt on their fries because they were pre seasoned & I loved that. Lately, they've started dumping salt on them, making them taste like everybody else's fries. I've quit ordering fries from Checkers because even ordering them with no salt, they still come out salty. 🤮
You would think ordering them with no salt, would be the answer. It sounds like the fries are pre salted before going into the fryer.
@thebritstry I believe they are just taking them from the fryer & dumping them on that tray that's full of salt that they don't wipe clean.
Your place is messing up the classic Rally's fries. Probably some dumb and high teens making them
Next time you come to Philadelphia, you must go to Nifty Fifty's. It's an amazing burger joint.
Thanks for the recommendation! We would love too revisit in the future! we’ll definitely check out Nifty Fifty's next time we are in Philadelphia!
Sonic: chili cheese coney, onion rings, hot fudge milkshake.
We will have to give those suggestions a try! Thanks
Five Guys burgers and fries cajun fries
I have never had a restaurant that has been french fried.
Salt comes in packets. 😊
Thanks for the detailed response! The sauce can definitely improve the experience
Checkers is the best,Wendy's never let u down and there's something deceptively addictive about McDonald's
All great points! Thanks for sharing
Havent had arbys in a while but i love their curly fries. Popeyes also has great fries imo.
Your right the curly fries are really good. Thanks for watching
Unlike the vast majority, I like the fries from In and Out. You guys have the best energy on your videos. Enjoy them!
Freddy’s Steakburger has the best fast food burger s and the best fries-skinny and crispy and accompanied by fry sauce.
Thanks for the recommendation!! we will have to look them up!
