I managed a McDonald's in the 80s when they had the fried apple pie. At the end of the night, if there was any pies left, I'd put one in a cup and put soft serve on top. Warm pie and cold soft serve...so good. 🍏 Most people don't remember that McDonald's also had a cherry pie. 🍒
KFC was incredible when I was a kid in the 90s/early 2000s, same with Pizza Hut. I haven't eaten at either in over a decade because they're a shell of their former selves
When I was much younger KFC was amazing!! But like ALL of the other companies PepsiCo has purchased the quality has been replaced with profit and gimmicks. I don't eat at establishments owned by PepsiCo anymore.

Popeyes...hands down! It doesn't need fancy sauces. It's that good! Beans and rice is a very regional dish. It could be File powder spice used in gumbo. Its sassafras.
I've tried the ghost pepper and its delicious! Not really too hot! But then again I'm a spice head! Also you should stir the rice and beans before tasting as the gravy may be on the bottom.
I don't even care what food you are trying (try some Dutch/the Netherlands ones though if you get the chance) but your energies and laughs make the vids! 🤣
i worked at popeys for about a year. they didnt add enough bunn water or it sat for over 2 hours...in which case they shouldve added a splash of bunn water and stirred before serving or thrown away. you only need water and about 5 minutes for the potatoes and red beans. bunn water is just water that is a few degrees from boiling from the bunn (brand) dispenser. we also used that to clean the floors. on my break i would get a side of red beans and rice with some hot sauce. they really are good lol
Also, they usually don't taste like plastic. I'd say that was probably one of the employees fucking it up. That's tye ussue with popular chains. The quality is inconsistent at times.
Do you remember when people were forming queues around Popeyes for their chicken sandwich? When I finally tried it out I was severely underwhelmed. I was expecting angels to be dancing in front of me.
You know how we used to make the gravy at KFC when I work there? From the crackling and the leftovers from the deep fryer machine that did the original recipe chicken.
Y'all making me hungry for some fried chicken, even though I had Popeyes a couple days ago, but my favorite will always be Jollibee's chicken joy, chicken sandwich and chicken tenders, and everything else on their menu!
Both these companies copied Chick-fil-a in terms of the packaging, toppings and presentation of their chicken sandwiches. They're both crap compared to the original I used to buy in my local mall 40 years ago. The funny thing is, Chick-fil-a's menu is almost the same now as it was in the 1980s, both in the menu selection and the taste.
They live in San Diego, CA. While there are Chic-Fil-A locations in San Diego, there are no Bojangles locations in California at all. So it isn't likely to happen unless they do the head-to-head on one of their out of state travels.
Chic fil A is the definition of over priced and mediocre. The service is always good though however in no way does that put them in the same league as Bojangles. I
Also, another positive would be the waffle fries but that is all I can think of. Heard good things about their pimento cheese chicken sandwich but I havent tried it because it is just way too much to pay for a sandwich.
As someone who worked at KFC years ago, unless they've changed, it is a dried flakes mashed potato mix in a bag. So you guessed right on that. I've never tried Popeyes, but there's one close near me. Maybe someday. The coleslaw is one thing I had to make. Hated doing it because I hated the smell, tried it once but once was enough to never want it again. I like breaking the chicken up in the mashed potatoes and eating it that way. The KFC biscuit looked odd to me. Ours we made were always light and fluffy.
When you got to the pie and mentioned old school McDonald’s Apple pie I wanted to weep. It was my first part time job as a freshman in college. It was 1989 when they swapped the beef tallo out with vegetable oil and stopped frying pies and baking them. It’s never tasted the same since. It was that ‘health craze’ time. I mean it’s McDonald’s, not even the salad is healthy. Eat healthy at home! Fast food was always a treat when I was young, not a daily food option. I miss those pies. Only Hawaii in the states (and Asian countries) have fried pies still.
Great review!! Both KFC and Popeye's compliment each other because you can get tired of one or the other rather quickly and need a refreshing change. One major difference that always gives KFC the edge for me is, that after the chicken goes cold, whether or not you heat the chicken back up, the Popeye's always tastes like shite. Even cold the next day in the fridge, KFC chicken is just as awesome.
I recently discovered fried chicken from Walmart of all places. I was extremely surprised at how good, juicy, and flavorful it is. And its only a fraction of the cost of KFC or Popeyes.
Did you tell the restaurants that you were doing a video? I ask because the tenders that I am getting from KFC are very small - between 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the ones you got. You should compare the spicy tenders from each.
When I was young, not going to say the decade (80s), my favorite things from Popeyes was the red beans and rice and biscuits, it was what I always got. But if Church's Chicken is still out there (no clue), try that too!
Popeyes is far better than KFC these days. Another think great about Popeyes is you can get any pieces you want in a multi-piece order with no upcharge. The red beans and rice has changed a bit over the years and used to have a more spicy flavor and kick to them. IMO they used to be better but it's easy enough to zing them up when you get them home!
I’m really torn because the like the crunch of Popeyes chicken but I also like the 11 herbs and spices of KFC. No thank you for either biscuit. Great video!👍🏾
Way to watered down for my taste. Most all slaw made commercially just has way too much mayo or the cabbage has sweated from the salt and everything is just swimming. We really love making a fresh jalapeno slaw with just enough mayo to hold it together.
My grandmother used to make mashed potatoes that looked exactly like KFC's. For what it's worth, Popeye's sodium content is higher than KFC. That's something to keep in mind. I only eat fried foods maybe two or three times a year. I eat Popeye's chicken sandwiches or KFC's meal.
Hamburgers and Fried Chicken as well as pizza are 2 items that fast food restaurants try to replicate but don’t quite get there ,so the quest to find the real thing is never ending.imagine if you had fast food barbecue and then compared that to Terry Blacks? So for real hamburgers Louis Lunch New Haven Connecticut (also the home of Frank Pepe’s pizza) and for real fried chicken ……. That’s a never ending quest best sought in the southern USA😊
I could tell you the winner before you took your first bite. Another chain that kicks KFC is Bojangles. While it's got a limited menu, Raising Canes has the best chicken tenders IMO.
I think red beans and rice is more of a Louisiana dish! As a Texan I like red beans and rice. So I think that is where the least favorite comes in. Popeyes Cajun gravy it's kind of like the start of gumbo! You start the dish with Trinity (onions, bell peppers, celery) and of course some Cajun seasoning! KFC's has a original version, and a extra crispy version of chicken! So to compare KFC's and Popeyes together better you would need to get the crispy chicken. And a little secret on both KFC's and Popeyes, if you go to a high volume location! The chicken especially the biscuits will be better! And you always, use your biscuits to dip in the mashed potatoes and gravy!
Popeyes > KFC on every level. It's not even a fair competition. Although I have to say the spicy chicken sandwich at KFC was on point when I tried it. It's about the only thing I will order from there. You need to put Popeye's up against Bojangles.
I grew up with KFC and have tried Popeyes chicken sandwich with my wife a few years back. We don't frequent any fast food so clearly not the demographic of either restaurant. It seems like giving both a try again is worth a go.
November 9th is National Chicken Sandwich Day. Almost all places have specials. McDonald's $2 McCrispy. KFC free with purchase. Popeye's free with $10 purchase.
When I've tried the rice and beans at the Popeyes near me, the beans are always on top with the rice on the bottom, so maybe that makes a difference? Also, I can understand why coleslaw is not your favorite. I had the coleslaw at a KFC in Birmingham England and there was SO much mayonnaise that I couldn't eat it, and I love coleslaw. The US version is better. Thanks for another fun video as always. BTW I agree with your winner. KFC is good, but a lot of why I like it is because it's familiar and nostalgic. I love the crispiness of Popeyes.
It's better, but not 10x better. KFC does some things just as good if not better than Popeyes. However, Popeyes has better desert and sandwiches, and of course the fries. I don't see how anyone likes Popeyes biscuits better though, sure they are buttery but they are as dry as the Sahara, KFC's are so soft and delicious, even without a lot of butter.
I do agree. Maybe it is just the KFC closest to me but it can be very hit or miss as far as quality (chicken too greasy or dry at times ) I’ve never had a bad meal at Popeyes and I love their chicken sandwiches especially. I’m going to try that hand pie now seeing how much you guys liked it
I agree on the cole slaw...it's the citric acid they put in it as a preservative to keep it from turning brown; however, it imparts an off taster. Rather make my own !! Overall, I prefer Popeye's !! Winner winner...Popeye's chicken dinner !!!
KFC just recently started advertising that they have "Comeback Sauce". That name sounded familiar to me. I know at least one other chain already had "Comeback Sauce". Perhaps it was Raising Cane's? If so, and if the other chain had bothered to copyright their sauce name, we might just hear about a lawsuit soon.
@thebritstry You can only get biscuits at breakfast because they are a base for the breakfast sandwich. I would do a breakfast sandwich challenge. For me, McDonald's breakfast sandwiches are not as good now because Chick-fil-A's are so fresh in comparison.
KFC got rid of their potato wedges which stood out from the other fast food chains to replace them with fries just like every other fast food chain. Stll sad about that. 😢 McDonald's got rid of their apple and cherry deep fried turnovers in favor of baked pies which are considered a healthier option. Other chains followed suit. I think Jollibees is one of the few that still have turnovers.
I also strongly prefer fries that don't have seasoning on them. Popeyes and Wingstop have ones that are just fine, but I always wish they didn't have them at all.
You should try churches chicken and white castle and Harold's chicken in Chicago 😆 oh... and portillo's you gotta try portillo's make sure you order the cake shake😆
I used to be a KFC man, but their quality is not what it used to be. I definitely prefer Popeye's over KFC for a lot of the reasons that you guys mention in the video. However, I would not have given KFC as high of a score as you did. That being said, it was a good video and keep up the great work.
I'm throwing in my 2 cents before watching. I gotta admit I go to popeyes at least once every week or 2. Been getting the ghost pepper chicken sandwich. The piece of chicken is huge and has great seasoning and crunch. KFC I haven't had in a long time. Last time I went it was drenched in oil and even the oil didn't taste fresh. Maybe it was just a bad experience. I'll try them again.
Popeyes is elite status and I love the red beans and rice 😂 The honey is usually for the bisket and I recommend the blackened ranch for the tenders next time.
Not even a competition. Outside the U.S. it’s a favorite. Hadn’t been that since the beginning of the 80’s. Here it’s an overpriced last resort. I’ll fry my own rather than get anything from KFC. The sides are disgusting.
Great point on the chicken to breading ratio, Nicola! I was thinking that before you even tried the Popeye's chicken tender. I love a crispy piece of chicken but if the breading is too much, I'm not happy. The chicken should be the star of the show. Popeye's might be larger but their tenders are thinner. I don't eat Popeye's because that seasoning gives me heartburn. I don't eat the sides at either place. KFC mashed potatoes is instant potato flakes and I just can't, lol. I like texture in my mashed potatoes so I would probably like the Popeye's more but again, their spice combo doesn't like me and I'm happy to pass them by, lol. You need to go to Bojangles(based in NC). You'll have to come back to the southeast to get it (no locations passed TX and you've yet to visit the east coast) but you'll lose your mind on their biscuits and they have great chicken. KFC biscuits aren't made fresh in house if I remember correctly so Popeye's would win against them but all lose when Bojangles is in the mix. For KFC you have to ask for Extra Crispy for their regular chicken. My mom is original recipe all day. My sister and I are extra crispy KFC people. My brother loves all things Popeye's. Andrew, I'm with you. Coleslaw is NASTY! Yes McDs still does the apple pies BUT in the US, they don't fry them anymore...MAJOR disappointment.
Thank you for the suggestions! We will definitely have to find a bojangles in the future! We didn’t know about the extra crispy kfc option but now our mouths are watering to try it😊 thanks for watching
@thebritstry always. And trust u will like it way more then the other places. Buttttt if ur gona do filipino foods. Even fast foods. U got to know how to do it. U will need to ask. Gravy goes on everything except deserts. Everything is mixed before eating and some U add stuff to it. Like polubuk u add lemon and mix mix mix.
NO!! Do not try the Ghost Pepper one. Even if it is supposed to be a very mild version. You certainly won't like it if it is not mild. I'm with you on their coleslaw. It is way too sweet.

Thanks for sharing the wisdom. Next time we will definitely try the dip test😊
Popeyes > KFC on every level. It's not even a fair competition. Although I have to say the spicy chicken sandwich at KFC was on point when I tried it. It's about the only thing I will order from there. You need to put Popeye's up against Bojangles.
For me it is KFC chicken, mashed potatoes
Popeyes biscuits and mac and cheese.
I grew up with KFC and have tried Popeyes chicken sandwich with my wife a few years back. We don't frequent any fast food so clearly not the demographic of either restaurant. It seems like giving both a try again is worth a go.
We were surprised go good they were ! Let us know what you think if you do try them?
I agree and would probably come about very close to the same numbers!
Thanks for watching😊
November 9th is National Chicken Sandwich Day. Almost all places have specials. McDonald's $2 McCrispy. KFC free with purchase. Popeye's free with $10 purchase.
Thanks for sharing the information!
The only good fried chicken comes from local restaurants, not chains. Even better, chicken fried at home by a southern style can’t be beat.
Good point. Well said! Where’s your favorite place?
I unfortunately don't have a Popeye's in my city. It's a crime. But I have had Popeye's, and it's 10 times better than KFC.
@slapEEEE . I must be biased then, but you talked them up. Add more butter to your biscuits 🫠🤔🤌✊️
@@andrewp1537 I don't need to add butter because I always eat mine with honey or dip them in mashed potatoes & gravy.
Bojangles easily clears them both.
I agree, spot on review. Next Cane's vs Guthries!
Thanks for the suggestion ! We will try and organize another head to head.
I love Popeyes Red Beans and Rice over potatoes.
Chick-fil-A biscuits are a 10.
What else should we try with them?
@thebritstry You can only get biscuits at breakfast because they are a base for the breakfast sandwich. I would do a breakfast sandwich challenge. For me, McDonald's breakfast sandwiches are not as good now because Chick-fil-A's are so fresh in comparison.
KFC got rid of their potato wedges which stood out from the other fast food chains to replace them with fries just like every other fast food chain. Stll sad about that. 😢
McDonald's got rid of their apple and cherry deep fried turnovers in favor of baked pies which are considered a healthier option. Other chains followed suit. I think Jollibees is one of the few that still have turnovers.
Popeyes hands down the best chicken and sides
POPEYES GRAVY IS JALPENO GRAVY
Durning the fries round you mixed the fries up KFC comes in the box where Popeyes comes in a bag
All that grease is what makes it 'finger lickin' good'.
I used to be a KFC man, but their quality is not what it used to be. I definitely prefer Popeye's over KFC for a lot of the reasons that you guys mention in the video. However, I would not have given KFC as high of a score as you did. That being said, it was a good video and keep up the great work.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and watching
Popeye's potato gravy has bits of green bell pepper in it.
Thanks for sharing! We will have to try that ghost pepper sandwich in the future! Let us know what you think if you give KFC another try?
I agree. Popeyes takes 1st place for me. Try beans and rice again. I love them.
We definitely will! Thanks for watching
Popeyes is elite status and I love the red beans and rice 😂 The honey is usually for the bisket and I recommend the blackened ranch for the tenders next time.
Thanks for the tips! Good to know, thank you
The winner should take on Chick-fil-A
KFC in Canada now sells a "Famous Chicken Sandwich" that beats all of the competition. It's both thick and juicy and full of flavour.
We might have to come and try that! Thanks for watching
I agree. Popeyes all the way!
You should’ve gotten the spicy chicken thighs and not the regular. It’s not spicy, but sooo flavorful. ♥️
I don't know if they still have them but I used to love Chickadilly Chicken when I was younger. Not the Cafeteria.
We will have to look it up and see if we can find one! Thanks for sharing the recommendation .
Raising Canes is a fantastic place for chicken tenders.
You gotta split that biscuit in half and put honey on it. Delish!
I knew that Apple Pie from Popeyes was going to get the highest score. Its the best fast food dessert if you ask me!
So True! We were not expecting it to be so good! Now a want another one!!! 😊😊
you will find as many different kinds of biscuits as people they are individual by hand but those both factory made tfs
Jollibee's
Thanks for the suggestion!
I eat the biscuits from these places with my potatoes an gravy. Spoon it onto biscuit an they both go good together
Oh ! Now we are hungry…. That sounds delicious. Thanks for the tips
I love Popeye's Red Beans and Rice, but the one you had didn't look the best.
We will definitely have to try them again! Thanks for watching
NO!! Do not try the Ghost Pepper one. Even if it is supposed to be a very mild version. You certainly won't like it if it is not mild. I'm with you on their coleslaw. It is way too sweet.
Thanks for the advice!
Biscuits are best with butter and dipped in gravy and mashed potatoes ;) Eating them plain is just too dry
I couldn't agree more! Butter and gravy really take biscuits to the next level. Thanks for watching
NEVER KFC, it's "food" gives me the runs! 🥴🤢🏃🏾♀️ I've not had any in over 30 years! Popeyes is my go to since it's so difficult to find a Church's Chicken 🤤 now in Philadelphia. 🫤😪
Thanks for watching!😊
