Two things: the standard veggie topping for authentic roast pork is broccoli rabe, but John’s refuses, using spinach instead. And Stock’s, sliced and toasted…sorry, just dropped my phone… 🤗
Lastly, authentic Philly water ice is lemon or cherry, if you wanted what it used to be. That’s not to say other flavors aren’t great…

Look at you Nicola! Eating tomatoes there and in the tomato pie! OMG I'm craving a hoagie now. For the roast pork, I used to work 5 minutes away from a place that made Italian Roast Pork sandwiches. It's not even a taste that you can describe, but you crave it. It's like nothing you've ever tried before. I miss it! As for the price you can tell that Philly is a worker's city. They do food that sticks to your ribs and it's comfort food. It's going to keep you going for hours. It's also big enough portions that you can share or save half for another meal. It must be so fun for you to visit all of these different areas and compare the foods that were shaped by the culture and what was available 100-150 years ago. They've taken these foods and learned to cook them to perfection. This looks like it was such a fun trip for both of you. Thanks for a great video.

I don't know the brand of strawberries, it came in a can and had a nice sauce/juice with it. The pound cake was SaraLee. All topped with whipped cream. I am so glad you guys got to sample other foods in the Philadelphia area. Water Ice or as the local say "wooder ice" is amazing. It's a summer staple in the Philadelphia area. You could have gotten a good water ice at any Rita's. Rita's is all over and I think they are going nationwide. My wife screamed at the screen when you got her favorite tomato pie without cheese. I can take it either way but it's a no deal for her without that cheese. I screamed at the screen when you went for condiments at John's Roast Pork. Thankfully you tasted the sandwiches before ruining them with ketchup. My family revered the pound cake. Mostly the ones from Sara Lee. It was served after dinner with either coffee or tea. Sometimes if the evening was really special my mom would top the pound cake with strawberries. When the woman behind the counter said that the rolls in the case were "snow flake" rolls I got a special warm smile inside because my father would take my brothers and I to the bakery every Sunday to get a dozen snow flakes. Soooooo good. The Hog Island story for the hoagies is the one I'm familiar with from my childhood. Just like my comments about your cheesesteak video you can get a great hoagie at any mom and pop pizza place from anywhere in the Philadelphia area but I've got to admit the one you got from Riccis looked fabulous. Great video and I look forward to seeing your next adventure.

Pound cake is delicious toasted for breakfast. As you said it is great with coffee or tea. Easy dessert for a crowd: slice up a store bought pound cake and plop a scoop of ice cream on eachslice. That tomato pie is amazingly inexpensive! I've spent more on just a regular loaf of sandwich bread. It looks more like focaccia than pizza.
I really appreciate the research you do when you visit a city. You find the best, most authentic places, rather than just go to the tourist spots.
If you ever make it to Hawaii, you should try shave ice. It's another version of ice with syrup, but the ice is scraped off a big block by a special machine. This technique gives it a light, fluffy texture, almost like snow. They sometimes serve it on top of things like sweetened azuki beans and fruit.
    Thanks!

You're first 2 stops were fantastic and I had to jump on and say that Stocks original with vanilla icing is a perfect thing. It is a thing that transcends pound cake or cake in general. It's just incredible on a Christmas morning with a big cup of coffee...just perfect. And JRP is top 1 or 2 cheese steaks in the area. Angelo's in S Philly being the other 1 or 2. We are very fortunate to have these 2 spots. Pork roll is the meat in that 2nd one. Pork roll is the grandchild of Spam, it is a very popular breakfast meat in New Jersey/Philly area

I am also surprised at the cultural journey that you take us on every week. Such rich cultural influences from so many immigrant groups that came here over the years. Nichola, the best way to eat a hoagie, for those of us with small mouths, is to take bites from each side until you get to the bottom. Then two bites takes care of the bottom. Then return to the top of the sides, taking alternating bites. This also works for the cheesesteak and the roast pork sandwiches

In Connecticut we call water ice Italian ice, the most popular flavor is lemon ice, followed by chocolate and watermelon and vanilla ice.

@@thebritstry lemon and vanilla are the original flavors and at most weddings around here especially Italian ones it's what they serve as the Inter-mezzo.
