I was born in Brooklyn and remember the pizza shop of my childhood (way back in the early '70;s) fondly. Giant slices of cheesy goodness - 30 cents a slice.
As a native New Yorker, those cheese slices are so good. Rule number with pizza in NY is never, ever use a folk and knife. Doing so will tell every New Yorker that you are not from NY. Now these people learning why so many NY style pizzerias exist through out the US. Folding the pizza keeps all the toppings on the pizza. Every time I return to NY I have pizza almost every day.
Eh, most New Yorker's don't really care. Who cares if you're seen as a tourist, the city is filled with tourists. I've lived in NY my entire life and I don't fold my pizza. I have many many times, but I prefer not to. The only pizza I eat with a knife and fork at stuffed pizzas or certain specialty slices that are too messy to eat with your hands.
Do not eat pizza everyday it will clog your arteries and give you a heart attack. I had two stents put in my heart doctor told me that the worst things you can eat or fried foods like french fries or fried chicken and also Pizza especially pepperoni pizza and pastries and donuts. Those are the worst foods for heart disease😢
The New Zealand family recently ate pizza all over New York City and then ate pizza all over Italy and they rated New York City Pizza as being better than Italy pizza❤
@@jeffhampton2767 I mean, my gpa has stents from like 10 years ago and he still smashes pizza, it doesn't seem to had adverse side effects on the stents or his heart. New Haven has the edge over NY pizza, but those are whole pie restaurants, and not quite compatible with the slice places they were visiting. If they went to John's of Bleecker Street, then they could make more of a comparison.
Really loving your pizza tour. I. Originally from Detroit so i hope my hometown style wins but........i think you missed out on good Chicago thin crust.i lived in Kenosha Wisconsin for 25 years and can honestly say its my second favorite.
Connecticut has recently been names "Pizza Capital Of The USA" mainly because of the New Haven style "apizza" (ah-beetz ) which is the way Italian Americans meant it to be over 100 years ago. My fav in Manhattan are Grand Street Pizza & Il Piccolo Bufalo on Mulberry in Little Italy.
I live in NY and had to pause this video halfway through otherwise I'd be tempted to go out and get a late night slice. But it's almost 11pm and I have a wedding to lose weight for in 3 weeks haha

Hello 👋. Since you live in San Diego have you two heard of the huge San Diego Comic Con? It is the largest collectibles convention on the west coast. It takes place this year in July from the 24th through the 28th. It’s held in the convention center by the harbor. It is massive. Tickets are sold out but there are numerous displays & events outside around the convention center. Lots of people will be In homemade costumes. I hope you have time to walk around on the outside of the center during the convention. You can walk behind the center on the harbor & lookout over the ocean. Awesome 👍👍👍.
I grew up in New Jersey, and lived a long time in both Chicago and Detroit. I have an opinion comparing the 3. I guess I might have a bias because lived in NJ until I was 11 which is pretty formative. I would rank "real" NY/NJ style pizza first because I feel like you could have it more often. Detroit Style I would rank next because it has the most Umami, in a way it is the most craveable, but I don't feel like you could eat it once a week. I also love a Chicago Style Deep dish which is satisfying in its own way. I want to be able to have all 3 at different times will have a craving for each.
Thank you for the suggestion! That's a great idea! we'll definitely consider those places and seeing if there is any difference in the pizza at sit down locations! .
Loved watching you both try all 3 cities! Chicago deep dish will always be #1 to me, Detroit just behind it. New York pizza is so overrated to me(I know, New Yorkers will attack me for this). Looking forward to what you guys do next!! Love to you both from Atlanta
New York style pepperoni is my favorite. I think it tastes better when you don't fold it.Mama too looked the best as well. It looked like it had that New York Pizza bite, cheesy bite where you can just sink your teeth into crust that is well married to cheese and sauce.
@@thebritstry I think pepperoni is the number one topping in the United States especially on a New York Pizza. You might get hooked on that and never go back to plain cheese again.
mmmm all these pizzas look great, I love pizza 🙂 Glad that you guys flew from place to place, it would take forever on the ground! Nine hours driving or about 20 hours on the train....Sometimes people who haven't been the USA yet will say "I'm going to fly into New York and then drive to Chicago and then drive to the grand canyon....", you can go from one place to the next in a few hours, but it takes the speed of a jet aircraft to do so. 🙂
Detroit-style pizza today is a square thick foccacia crust pizza baked in plenty of olive oil to provide a crisp, flavorful bottom and crust edge. The sauce is plentiful on the dough; the cheese is plentiful and rests on that. The cheese is deliberately piled on the edges so that it creates a crisp brown cheese rim on the outer edge. toppings, again plentiful go on top. Older versions are a bit more like Chigago-style... somewhat thinner crust, toppings under cheese. Most people prefer the newer version.
The picture on the can looks like an Italian tomato.San Marzano types have a narrow shape, resembling a chile pepper. The second one seemed to check all the boxes for what I am told is a proper New York pizza.
If you want the best pizza you have to go to Brooklyn. If you want the best square pizza you have to go to L&B's and you should try the Italian ices there.
A White pizza is my fav. Some use ricotta cheese and some don't, should try different white pizzas. Coal and wood fire give different taste also. I remember going in the mid 80s(high school) $1.50 got a slice and large drink
I know on my adventures nyc pizza is the best we offer in the usa if what i have tried. But ill be curious what one pizza joint was your favorite. Detroit style is a dark horse for some folks as best though.
You compared apples to oranges. Your deep Chicago and Detroit pizza's had pepperoni and sausage and the NY was just cheese and/or different toppings. More grease w/ pepperoni/sausage. You can make a frozen pizza great by adding extra pepperoni, cheese, black/green olives, bacon or anything else. $4-7.50/slice when you can make a whole for $10.00. We have 2 great pizza restaurants in Apopka FL, Rosati's, deep dish and Jet's, Detroit. You're looking at over $20.00 for a small/2 maybe 3.
I prefer to make my own pizza. I use a cat iron pan, thinish crust, a layer of Parmesan then sauce. Loaded with Italian sausage, pepperoni, bacon, Canadian bacon, onions, olives, mushrooms, bell peppers and lots of mozzarella. Sometimes jalapenos on top.
It is always a good idea to stick with a basic cheese slice when comparing pizzas. However, you should always get a slice of pepperoni (NY's favorite topping) as well, so see how well they do that kind of slice. So yes, you would have to get two slices at every stop! Of course, if you are still hungry, you could also try a slice of the square ("Sicilian") pizza to see how they do that as well!
Even though I’ve never had pizza in NYC, I know it’s the best (imo) I’ve had that style and it’s just the way pizza is should be. 🍕🍕 Not taking anything away from the other excellent styles, I’ll happily eat them all. GOD Bless America! 🇺🇸
New York Pizza is the best with very thin crust and floppy not too crispy or crunchy. We have the same exact Pizza in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Delaware and probably a couple more States. ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
As a native New Yorker I can say for Manhattan it’s John’s of Bleeker st but the outer boroughs have better pizza places. L&B Spumoni Gardens where the Sicilian slices are famous and probably one of the best. It’s on 86st in Bensonhurst Brooklyn. In Queens you can try New Park pizza for classic round cheese slices. Enjoy !
Glad you didn't just order plain slices. I'm 1 of a handful of 8 million NYers who don't fold pizza slices. My logic: Folded? You get 5-6 bites. Unfolded? You get twice the bites, hehe. I suggest you try white pizza (with shrooms, garlic oil...). I hope you guys had fun!!! I'll catch you on your next video.
Thanks for your recommendation on the pizza to try next time! White pizza with mushrooms and garlic oil sounds delicious. We love you your thought process! Unfolded pizza definitely looks bigger!!
As a lifelong folder, I gotta say, it’s hard to argue with your logic. Love the idea of making the slice last just a little longer. Might have to try that since I tend to body a slice within 2 minutes
I always try new places as plain....it allows Me to see how good the main parts of the pizza actually are without masking it with toppings...crust, sauce and cheese...after that I typically enjoy sausage and mushrooms...sometimes onions...lol...another good place since you are not to far is Pepe Pizza up in Connecticut...though I would tell you to hit Louis Lunch in New Haven and get the ORIGINAL hamburger...or...Nardellis for an Italian sandwich...just saying...
Pizza is one of my favorites I watch a lot of pizza shows supposedly New Jersey's got the best pizza. I'm from Texas never been so I can't say for sure.
"fancy" is one of the quality grades used for many canned foods - usually guarantees all are of the same variety (no mixing of different types of tomatoes in the same can, for example), of the same degree of ripeness and minimum bruising, etc. In the US, the USDA (the federal regulator) stopped using this term and now uses "Grade A" ... but fancy is a mark of quality in canned product Looks like it was a beautiful day to eat pizza outdoors in New York! I do tend to think of NY style as flaccid, but I know New Yorkers love it and I wouldn't turn down a slice for four bucks on a sunny day in June 😋😋😋
We actually had a hotel booked but we were delayed into NYC and it then didn't make sense to try and rush a review! it's definitely on our list of places to visit, where would you recommend?
I 1:21 , the Pizzaiolo am back here to educate. The reason the pizza was dry on the bottom... not greasy... for a few reasons 1) pan is very flat. Not nearly the oil put on the pan prior to laying out the dough 2) New York Style pizza is made with All purpose flour. (most popular brand... Trump's All-Purpose) lots of bromate that allows the stretch to occur. with less hydration, there is no need to put in olive oil. Let it self-rise and as long as the dough is covered, not much oil is added as the dough builds up gluten 3) NY style... you'll notice a little gray outer band... that is due to malt....to prevent it from tasting like a cracker...a quick drizzle of oil is added before and even after the pie is cooked... if it isn't added...then you have a very dry pizza crust 4) Extra oily ingredients such as pepperoni, sausage or ground beef on a very thin crusted pizza will exhibit the grease 5) cheese that is already shredded in the package comes with an "anti-caking agent" ...which is (believe it or not)a plastic...that causes a grease pool upon melting. Hope I helped😉👍
We appreciate your detailed explanation on why pizza crust can turn out dry. Thanks for sharing the knowledge with everyone and it is invaluable! Thank you!
It's fun to see the amount of fakery involved in these things, kind of like watching a movie shot in NYC and seeing someone teleport 30 blocks between takes. For a second I was like "Oh, cool, "Mamas Too", they're in my old neighborhood", except I literally lived across the street from that place, and that is NOT where they filmed the bit when they were eating the pizza. Also, while they're good pies, they're absolutely not representative of typical NYC-style pizza. It's a weird not-quite-Detroit-not-quite-Sicilian thing, and it's delicious, but it's miles away from a classic NYC pie. Taking the one round pie they make (The "house pie" which is just tomato, Mozarella and basil) and getting them to throw some pepperoni on it (if that even happened) is about as fake as it gets.
Thanks for watching but you are slightly incorrect, we ate the Mama's TOO! pizza around the corner no more that 50 yards away from the front door! on the corner of bleecker street and Christopher street. you can probably see the shops and bars behind us. Also, why would we ask them to just 'throw on some pepperoni?' It would make no sense?

New Haven has the edge over NY pizza, but those are whole pie restaurants, and not quite compatible with the slice places they were visiting. If they went to John's of Bleecker Street, then they could make more of a comparison.
Really loving your pizza tour. I. Originally from Detroit so i hope my hometown style wins but........i think you missed out on good Chicago thin crust.i lived in Kenosha Wisconsin for 25 years and can honestly say its my second favorite.
Thank you so much for your kind words! we are glad you're enjoying the pizza tour. Looks like we need to head back to try the Chicago thin crust.
John's of Bleecker Street New York is the best Pizza 🍕 😋 ❤
Thanks for the advice! next time we will definitely head to John's of Bleecker Street
I second this
Have you tried New York Suprema Pizza?
@@julesmo323
I have had John's of Bleecker Street cheese pizza and Sally's Apizza New Haven cheese pizza 🍕
@@davidengen1954 So you haven't. Just say no next time.
I eat pizza 5 times a week so I utterly admire your pizza series of videos.
Which is your favorite style of Pizza? We have a new found respect for Pizza after this trip!! Might have to get some tonight😂
Next time you guys are in NYC, you have to try pizza in Brooklyn. Chef’s kiss 🤌🏽
That's interesting! we'll have to try some New Haven-style pizza soon. Thanks for sharing your recommendations in Manhattan
Now I know what I’m ordering for dinner tonight! 🍕
Absolutely! its amazing! we are craving a pizza now as well.
I live in NY and had to pause this video halfway through otherwise I'd be tempted to go out and get a late night slice. But it's almost 11pm and I have a wedding to lose weight for in 3 weeks haha
😂Sorry for providing unwanted temptation! Congratulations on the upcoming wedding though and thanks for watching...
I love all types of pizza, but must say joe's is very, very on point! *that* is a ny slice. remember having a few after hitting the bars, perfect.
Totally agree with you on Joe's pizza being the best after a night out! we can really see that working.
bleecker st is one of my favorites, you should be able to hold a slice straight out unfolded in ny. new haven does have some great pizza as well
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll have to try the pizza in New Haven next time I'm in the area. We actually had a hotel booked in New Haven on this trip, but were delayed and it then didn't make sense to rush there for a few hours. We will definitely head there in the future.
THEY NEED TO TRY BEAU JO'S in Idaho Springs, Colorado. Colorado pies are amazing too!
We will add it to the list. 😀
Looked like some wonderful 'pie' (pizza). Wish I could sample that style here. (there might be some place that makes here in the Chicago / Rockford area. I just don't know about it). Thank you for the video. Take care - Be safe and waiting for the next video.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Stay tuned for more tasty content coming your way. Take care!
Sally's in New Haven, CT. Apizza!
We were trying to get there! We actually had a hotel booked in New Haven but were delayed on our flight from Detroit and it then didn't make sense to rush there for a few hours. We will definitely head there in the future.
@@thebritstry Next time then, see you there. Safe travels to you both.
Hey, thanks for letting us know about Comic Con! We'll try to swing by and soak in the convention atmosphere.
Fun video! Next time I would suggest going to sit down pizza restaurants like Lombardi's, Grimaldi's, Arturo's, and Patsy's.
Thank you so much for your support and for enjoying the video! We have many more exciting adventures coming soon!
New York style pepperoni is my favorite. I think it tastes better when you don't fold it.Mama too looked the best as well. It looked like it had that New York Pizza bite, cheesy bite where you can just sink your teeth into crust that is well married to cheese and sauce.
Thanks for sharing! the pizza from Mamas Too! had pepperoni and and was seriously good.
@@thebritstry I think pepperoni is the number one topping in the United States especially on a New York Pizza. You might get hooked on that and never go back to plain cheese again.
mmmm all these pizzas look great, I love pizza 🙂
Glad that you guys flew from place to place, it would take forever on the ground! 🙂
Totally agree, flying is the way to go! Pizza and travel, what more could you ask for?
Luv you guys!
As an American, the best pizza I ate in my entire life was in New York City, hands-down! 🤤
Thanks for sharing the detailed description of Detroit-style pizza! Thanks for watching
The picture on the can looks like an Italian tomato.San Marzano types have a narrow shape, resembling a chile pepper. The second one seemed to check all the boxes for what I am told is a proper New York pizza.
It was really tough to choose! Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing your white pizza love! It's great to hear about your memories from the 80s.
I know on my adventures nyc pizza is the best we offer in the usa if what i have tried. But ill be curious what one pizza joint was your favorite.
Detroit style is a dark horse for some folks as best though.
Where should we have tried? Might need an excuse to revisit😉
Those last two looked like the best.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, those last two were pretty awesome.
Of course, if you are still hungry, you could also try a slice of the square ("Sicilian") pizza to see how they do that as well!
.Love the pizza advice! Sounds like a great excuse to head back to NYC to try more 😉😉 We'll make sure to load up on slices next time.
Even though I’ve never had pizza in NYC, I know it’s the best (imo) I’ve had that style and it’s just the way pizza is should be.
🍕🍕
Not taking anything away from the other excellent styles, I’ll happily eat them all. GOD Bless America! 🇺🇸
That's the beauty of pizza, there are so many styles to enjoy!
New York Pizza is the best with very thin crust and floppy not too crispy or crunchy. We have the same exact Pizza in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Delaware and probably a couple more States. ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the information! sounds like we need to extend our Pizza tour !
Stay safe and enjoy
Thank you for your kind words! Thanks for watching
Gotta have basil baby...told you tomatoes are wonderful. ❤😂
Thanks for the comment! We are definitely starting to learn the joys of tomatoes. Basil and tomatoes are definitely a winning combo.
Enjoy !
We will have try them next time we go!
Love you guys
Thank you so much for your support!
next time in NYC, try the original Grimaldi's, basically under the Brooklyn bridge.
Thanks for the suggestion! We haven't heard about Grimaldi before. We'll definitely check it out next time we are in NYC. Thanks for watching
Looks like you guys are having a great time on your pizza tour! Are you sick of pizza yet? 🤣🍕🍕🍕
Not yet, let us know if there is any other places we should visit to try pizza
Lived in NY for 20 years. I'd take that second slice all day.
Thank you for sharing your experience! NY pizza is truly special. Thanks for watching!
yay! you're finally loving tomatoes!
😂It didn't take long once we tried good ones
Yes please 😋😋👏👏
We appreciate your enthusiasm, Which would you have chosen? Thanks for watching
Y'ALL MAKE MY MOUTH WATER ....ENJOY THE NY PIZZA !
It was delicious! we are really craving another slice! Thanks for watching
Now I'm craving one. Thank your for that lol.
As a lifelong folder, I gotta say, it’s hard to argue with your logic. Love the idea of making the slice last just a little longer. Might have to try that since I tend to body a slice within 2 minutes
Try Cuts and Slices in Brooklyn.
Thank you for the recommendation! Sounds like we need to head back to NYC to extend the review
I live in Chicago and my favorite pizza is the hotboi at Scarr's!
Thank you for sharing your favorite pizza spot, Scarr's We will have to try the hotboi next time!
I make it at home ❤😂😅😊😊😊😊 I'm from N.Y. 1ST GENERATION AMERICAN of Italian decent 😊
That's a great approach to pizza tasting! your right, it's always good to appreciate the basics first. Thanks for watching
Pizza is one of my favorites I watch a lot of pizza shows supposedly New Jersey's got the best pizza. I'm from Texas never been so I can't say for sure.
There must be good Pizza in Texas as well though? where is you favorite pizza from?
Who else thinks hubby looks like a British version of Chef Richard Blais 😅
John’s on Bleeker!
Thanks for letting us know! Next time we will give it a try! Thanks for watching
@@thebritstry my wife and I love watching you guys. 👍👍👍
"fancy" is one of the quality grades used for many canned foods - usually guarantees all are of the same variety (no mixing of different types of tomatoes in the same can, for example), of the same degree of ripeness and minimum bruising, etc. In the US, the USDA (the federal regulator) stopped using this term and now uses "Grade A" ... but fancy is a mark of quality in canned product
Looks like it was a beautiful day to eat pizza outdoors in New York! I do tend to think of NY style as flaccid, but I know New Yorkers love it and I wouldn't turn down a slice for four bucks on a sunny day in June 😋😋😋
We appreciate you taking the time to drop some knowledge on canned food quality grades. We didn't know that. 👍Thank you
Most fresh out of the oven pizza doesn’t fold well. When a slice is reheated is when the bottom really crisps up.
That's a great observation! Reheating pizza definitely changes the texture and can make it even better.
Excellent 🍕
Thank you 😋
When you have proper Italian tomatoes they are sweet. Not sure what you usually get in UK.
40 minutes to New Haven Connecticut by train from there…
We actually had a hotel booked but we were delayed into NYC and it then didn't make sense to try and rush a review! it's definitely on our list of places to visit, where would you recommend?
Sally's apizza
Another vote for Sally’s ah-beets! Pepe’s, Modern, Bar and Zuppardi’s, too! Can’t go wrong with New Haven apizza
So... Mama's Too!👑huh? I'm taking a mental note of that. 🤔
It was really good! we hope you get there soon.
I 1:21 , the Pizzaiolo am back here to educate.
The reason the pizza was dry on the bottom... not greasy... for a few reasons
1) pan is very flat. Not nearly the oil put on the pan prior to laying out the dough
2) New York Style pizza is made with All purpose flour. (most popular brand... Trump's All-Purpose) lots of bromate that allows the stretch to occur. with less hydration, there is no need to put in olive oil. Let it self-rise and as long as the dough is covered, not much oil is added as the dough builds up gluten
3) NY style... you'll notice a little gray outer band... that is due to malt....to prevent it from tasting like a cracker...a quick drizzle of oil is added before and even after the pie is cooked... if it isn't added...then you have a very dry pizza crust
4) Extra oily ingredients such as pepperoni, sausage or ground beef on a very thin crusted pizza will exhibit the grease
5) cheese that is already shredded in the package comes with an "anti-caking agent" ...which is (believe it or not)a plastic...that causes a grease pool upon melting.
Hope I helped😉👍
We appreciate your detailed explanation on why pizza crust can turn out dry. Thanks for sharing the knowledge with everyone and it is invaluable! Thank you!
I think all 3 types of pizza are delicious! Just depends on personal preference and what you’re craving that day ❤
It's a Great Point, Well Made! I am craving pizza now though
Yeh, but we all know that one is a little bit better than the rest...LOL.
@@makapan1 tough call between all 3. but NYC style for convenience. Chicago or Detroit if I'm ok with a food coma afterwards.
Where did you get nyc pizza that wasnt greasy?
The restaurant links are in the description of the video! Thanks for watching
So which city is best? I didn’t watch this whole one just want to see if Detroit wins.
