    When you hear that ticking from the mag, means the impulse coupling is working to retard ignition spark. Basically is a safety feature.

      I've understood the impulse coupling's function to provide a good retarded spark to assist starting, but not as a safety feature. What's the theory behind that? The system is 'safer' since it'll give a good spark even at low RPM?

      @@MacMcCardle The theory behind the safety feature is if the impulse coupling fail.
      It will hinder the magneto's ability to generate sufficient spark energy
      It will lead to the engine firing in full advance timing and thus lead to a kickback during starting
      It will cause the propeller to rotate violently causing serious damage to the airplane
      That’s some of the problems.
