Hey Cliff, again great video. It would be good in the future to differentiate between the Paxton Boys and the Paxton Riflemen. The PR were the official state sanctioned militia group and the Paxton Boys were a splinter, hot headed, rouge group who acted on their own as a vigilante group. Many of the PB leaders were seen as disrespectable from that time on by the local Paxton inhabitants.
Such a sad story. You are correct, though. We need to present history as it actually happened and in a manner that reflects all parties involved. We need the truth if we are to learn from history. Thank you for this presentation, Cliff.
Blackwater hat?!?! Is that a reference to the massive WY fire in 1937??? Wyoming. Named after the Wyoming Velley just down 309 from me (I’m in Mountain Top) Glad I found your page!
When reading resources about native tribes and why they did what they did, it's important to remember that this story was told by the white settlers, not the native. The indigenous people of PA were swindled out of the land they relied upon for thousands of years by religious and greedy people. The native people didn't redirect their anger, they were pushed out of their homeland so they did what they did out of survival. The Paxtang boys weren't redirecting anger, they were directing it upon a culture they thought they were superior to.
Bro it sounded like you were under attack at the beginning of this video. But, as always, great video, and a period and event in PA and American history that should be much better known.
Like the term you used, redirected anger. Thinking how much of redirected anger is going on in today's society. This is a great piece of History, and you did make the story come alive. Your a natural at storytelling, teaching, while adding your own philosophies. Awesome taking us to the downtown theater. Beautiful building ! This video is a Great gift to society, awesome Cliff .
Another great history lesson Cliff, thank you. Talking about revenge on folks that had nothing to do with whatever the hissed off people are taking revenge on the recent riots of 2019/20come to mind.
I see you came to my neck of the city of Lancaster I was also planning to do the same and cover this since it's Lancaster history buti love how this ties in with your F&I war series as well looking forward to meet you one day while out exploring.
Thanks for clarifying that these massacred native Americans were pacifistic Christians. They were adopting the beliefs of their non-resistant Mennonite neighbors. The Mennonites took them to the prison for protection. This account shows that when society is prejudiced, the innocent are condemned and betrayed.
They WERE cowards! The whole town. They watched the Paxton Boys ride into town having full knowledge of why they were there. They rode strait to the jail (Lancaster Gaul) and pulled them out, hacked them into pieces (took souvenirs') the whole while being watched by people who stood there and did nothing. Then they rode out of town. I'm working on compiling a list of exactly who these men were. I want people to know. Do some more research on what the "Quakers" did in Philadelphia to protect the Delaware Indians from the Paxtons. THEY were the heroes.
Thank you. I enjoyed your lecture and the beautiful scenery of PA. 😊😊 The French and Indian War split the Iroquois Confederacy. The Cayuga, Seneca and Mohawks tribes sided with the French. The Onondaga and Oneida tribes sided with the British. Between all of them their territory practically covered what is now New York state. *Mohawks* Area: Mohawk River northward, through the Adirondacks to the Canadian border/St. Lawrence River and along the western side of the Lake George/Lake Champlain corridor (I am not sure of the southern reach of their territory) *Oneidas* Area: West of Mohawk River, near Rome, NY, westward to the western shore of Oneida Lake. North to the shore of Lake Ontario. Rome, NY = Fort Stanwix and the Oneida Carry (I am not sure of the southern reach of their territory) *Onondagas* Area: West of the Oneida's territory; westward to the area just east of Cayuga Lake. This would include the cities of Syracuse, NY, northward to Lake Ontario to Oswego, NY. (Fort Oswego/Fort Ontario) South to the current Cortland County/Broome County line (confluence of the Otselic River with the Tioughnioga River -- Whitney Point, NY) *OR* Perhaps, a little further south to either the current location of Chenango Forks, NY (confluence of the Tioughnioga River and the Chenango River) *OR* The confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers at Binghamton, NY. *Cayugas* Area: Both sides of Cayuga Lake. North to Lake Ontario. (I am not sure of the southern reach of their territory) *Senecas* Area: Both sides of Seneca Lake. Westward into the western part of NY state. I am not sure if their territory went as far west as Buffalo. That area was in dispute for a long time. North to Lake Ontario. (I am not sure of the southern reach of their territory) *Tuscaroras* The Tuscarora's were the sixth tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy. They had migrated from Virginia/North/South Carolina areas into Pennsylvannia and northward, to the territory of the Onondaga and Oneida over a a period of about 90 years. *The territories of the Iroquois Confederacy tribes ebbed and flowed at the edges.* The Native Americans were constanly at war with each other; even BEFORE the Europeans arrived (North America was not some utopian, peaceful paradise, despite depictions by European poets and novelists) Wars increased as different tribes aligned with either the British or the French as each tribe or confederacy of tribes sought to dominate the fur trade (Those people really wanted those trade goods!). During the French and Indian War the Iroquois Confederacy sided with the British and the American Colonials. During the American Revolutionary War, the Iroquois Confederacy's tribes, initially, were neutral. Finally the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga and Mohawk tribes sided with the British. The Oneidas and the Tuscaroras living within Oneida territory, remained neutral and eventually sided with the Patriots (pro-revolution side) Thank you again for such a nice video 😊 (subscribed)
The Paxton Boys were also angered that the NA still owned property across the Susquehanna River and they felt they had no right to the land since they had been conquered. Also, make a note, that the Susquehannock's were not destroyed by these foul deeds, they still survived up in New York State with the Iroquois tribes and continue to this day.
You mentioned George Washington early in this video. In your research involving him did you happen to run across the name of Christopher Gist? He was a surveyor with Washington. I have read some about him but would love to know more. His brother Nathaniel was the father of Sequoia (sp). Also I am descended from the Gist's. I know that I comment on a lot of your videos about my ancestors, but I have done my research and am descended from a lot of the founding fathers of this country. Your videos are always interesting and enjoyable. Thank you for sharing.
My mother used to sing opera in the Lancaster opera company / Fulton opera house she said after late shows cleaning up etc it was very spooky in the basement and her and all her people said it was definitely haunted not that I believe in such things
This video demonstrates the crummy state of affairs in Pennsylvania's public education system. The vast majority of kids are not educated about important events like this in PA history (as well as a ton of others). So few people know about the massacre. So lame.
Wow that had me breaking out in goosepimples. What a terrible time, so many innocent lives lost. I feel that parson was more to blame there, he was supposed to be a man of God so in my book he was worse. What a Sad time. Thank you so much for this history it has me totally fascinated. Please stay safe and take care
The History of the world is not pretty. It is impossible for us to understand the 1700s, the people and their fears. Defending oneself and ones family has always been justified. It is unfair to judge the actions of the Frontiersman from today's perspective. I am sure they felt they were doing what they had to do to protect themselves and their families
Not so! Its the mentality of the race. Different races think differently. Greed is hate. Explain burning of the cross and lynching which carried on by the same kind of group past the 1700s.
What do you do if someone makes you sooo angry like they covered something up from your childhood, and , or won't take no for an answer such as elderly parents wanting to take your kids out to dinner and you don't trust their driving anymore and they argue and mention that they've had recent accidents. (But conveniently the LAST one wasn't their fault.) You just want them to leave you alone or you're going to beat them over the head with a frying pan or something. (You wouldn't really.) But you just feel like you're being coaxed into something that is a BAD idea and are being undermined. Oh and they ask that you kids get a nap before they see them. Good luck with that. You know how teens are. These are bright active girls btw. I'm sorry to comment on this. It's not you guy's job to fix this, I just needed to vent when you said about undirected anger I literally had just gotten off the phone w her and wanted to yell.
Oh it gets better. She lied and told my husband that she didn't want to take my kids anywhere in their car, that she just wanted to meet us for dinner and I'm the crazy one. Dear God, give us back Tupac and Biggie and I'll give you my parents.
Dont forget the Iroquis tribes took the name "snakes" from other tribes they harassed, stole from, and murdered. They were one of the most hated tribes by both the Indians and settlers because of how violent they were. Shouldn't kill women and kids but dont forget those women and kids were supported by thieves and murderers and would become thieves and murderers themselves if they didn't somehow grow out of their ancestral ways.
Although the Conestogas spoke the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) language, they were not part of the Iroquois Confederation and should not be associated with their upstate NY cousins. That's like saying Americans should be held responsible for the depredations caused the British in their empire just because both groups speak English. By the time of William Penn, the once mighty Conestoga tribe had been relegated to insignificance due to tribal warfare and population loss from European diseases. They never made war on the PA settlers.
I hope you heard that from ancestors of the Iroquois. History is always subjective and those who swindled the land from the natives made sure their stories made it into the historical records, not the native stories.
Wow kind reminds me of the Delaware Praying 🙏 to the white man God and singing Christian Hymns were still slaughtered and massacred women land children one by one were scalped and bludgeoned to death after ve scalped by the white men they turned Christian for. Everytime I hear that story of the Delaware praying Indians makes me cry.
I have been in Safe harbor many times , but never knew about the massacre. There was another Massacre near Christiana Pa I think in the 1850s of some black people , For got the reasons . Believe was in a stone church on the Upper Valley Rd. west of Christiana . It was not to far from my Great Uncle's farm on Lower Valley Rd.
That was a little different than the story I read, but you had the markers to back it up. Just goes to show you can't believe everything you read on the internet. It was a good video, and you traveled the distance to cover it.
we always hear of the first thanksgiving the starving settlers being tought how too plant after we had the first thanksgiving we took them out and killed them all why i think because they were different you read some way in the books but reality was very different they say that presedent lin. was killed sort of a consperacey there is the accepted way and there is the truth and we cant deal with the truth.
So, 2 wrongs dont make a right. So the savages and the barbarians were much the same. No matter how you cut and dice it, the Natives were invaded, and conned of their land.
Cliff As bad as the Indians were Their overall treatment by the People who came here was terrible. Innocent people are always the victims in every conflict. Two excaped. A husband and wife, but both were older. Look for the story of the Mother who broke her babies legs so it would fit under a bucket while the Paxton's were attacking the village. That baby died at the jail, the Mother died at the village.
Excellent video.
Thanks!!!
Thank you so very much for this video, it's so interesting to learn more about the history of my family!
Very sad I have a little susquehannock blood from my grandmother side i remember hearing about this when I was younger living in harford county md

Another great video!!! Thanks WW!!
I went to lower Paxton Junior High, now I know where the name came from. Thank you for sharing that history. Stay well.
Paxton was a corruption of the indian name for the "Peshtank" creek
David David, me too. Way back in the late '60's.

Thank you Cliff for the history lesson , I love hearing about the colonial times .
Someone has been leaving spirit bundles (blessings) on that plaque in Lancaster.
