  • The speedometer gear on the four speed transmission is simple to install. It can be removed and replaced in less than five minutes. Today we will walk through calculating the right speedometer gear for the vehicle and then switch it out.
For some reason, it said I needed an "orange" gear, but the actual gear color for 16 teeth was white.

Bang on, Mr Smackeys. Toploader and SROD gears have
    a left-hand slant (\\\\) while the C4, AOD, and T5 style gear has a right-hand slant
    (////).

Yep! The funny thing is there was a RH gear jammed in my toploader. I might do a video on it to show what happened. I'm glad to have the correct (LH) gear now. It's actually accurate.

@@SmackeysGarage I've found this often with my Cheery pie OEM Fords. Often, someone has been in before hand, and the part in the stock trans is Stock anymore.
Since the the massive outsourcing of Ford gearboxes, like the 1978 4 speed SROD ( Orion Tremec T170), the 1974 Jeep and Mustang II SR4, the 1981 Mustang 3.3 liter T4 4speed and the 1983 ( for Ford, but 82 for Chev and Datsun) T5 were made under sub contract, Ford coudn't standarise on one speedo drive. Same with the European outsourced Rocket/ET 78 and Bordeux C3 automatic gearboxes, and the Jatco 3 speed Datsun Mazda automatic. HFII after 1973, outsourced everything to make a buck .
Ford changed things to suit production parts, always has

That’s a great history lesson and explains some of the inconsistencies I’ve seen. I wonder how many people have been in this transmission..

Not only were you able to get the correct Tooth gear in there, it looks like you found out you had the wrong RH gear in there to begin with. I had that same problem on my last Mustang, someone had install the wrong hand gear, causing the plastic teeth to get mangled on that gear. Nice fix!

Yep! Good eye. Was going to make a video on that… what happens when you put a RH gear in a LH transmission!

No problem. It’s really simple. Just make sure you grab the right gear for it. Check the inner gear first and see if you have a 6 or 7 tooth gear.

I've never done this and I can't believe how simple it seems. But I know Murphy would visit me if I had to do it and there's no way it would be that easy. Lol

It's was extra easy for me since I was missing the bolt that held everything together!

Good video. Do you think you should have lubricated the new gear you installed? If so, what lubricant is recommended

    • @SmackeysGarage
      @SmackeysGarage  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't usually lubricate mine. It's a nylon gear so it is self lubricating. If you were to add lubricant I would use a synthetic lubricant compatible with nylon.

Good news!! My dads house sold and escrow closed. Should be getting my cut from it next week. Two things are gonna happen. Gonna get a new car, probably a 22 Mustang ecoboost to replace my truck as my daily driver. Gas is killing me.
Next is I got a guy real close to me to wire up the mine. So the project is starting back up soon. I’m still dealing with health issues and waiting on surgeries but in the meantime I don’t have to stress over nothing happening on the 69.
Really looking forward to trying out the newer ones as I haven’t driven anything past a fox body. Thanks for the well wishes and once I get everything in place I’ll start making content again.

That's great news about the house. Those 22 Mustangs look awesome. I hear ya about gas. All of my vehicles are V8, excepts for the wife's... which takes 93.
I hope you start videoing the progress on the 69 when you start the project back up. There aren't a lot of people building them right now.
Sounds like you are getting everything sorted out and making progress on both your health and the vehicle. Glad to hear it!
