  • Paul Cangialosi of 5Speeds.com stopped by the shop to help me rebuild the T5 transmission in my 1979 Ford Fairmont Project. During the build, we needed to work out what speedometer gear I should use. In this video Paul covers how to determine how many teeth are on a speedo gear, and what gear is right for your application.
    So if you're looking to figure out what speedometer gears you're going to need for your next build, look no further.

Problem now is when I'm doing 70 on the speedometer I'm actually only doing 55. This video and his website will def help once I figure out how many teeth on my drive gear.

    You can also play around with tire size. On my one car, they stopped making the size I wanted in the tire I wanted 205/60/15 so I got 195/65/15. Less than a quarter inch taller but it brought the speedometer from 3mph optimistic at 70mph to about 1/2 a mile an hour optimistic which is much better. The 195mm also fits the rims a lot better too, the rims aren't really wide enough for 205 IMO.

  • @Foghorn436
    @Foghorn436 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The places the gear teeth end are known as "Starts" - this can apply to threads or worm gears in this case. The more "starts" on a thread the faster a nut will move down the bolt per turn. Normal fasteners are single start threads.
    Water bottles threads have many starts so the cap comes off in one quick twist.

      Go to GMPartsWiKi dot com. Look up the parts books for your 1969 A-Body and look at the speedometer gear tables.
      You need to know the three digit transmission-model RPO, year, model, tire-size, and axle-ratio.
      If you're using a TH700R4 or some other non 1969 transmission you'll need to look up the transmission RPO for the donor model year and go to the table in the parts books for a plausible donor vehicle that used that transmission.

    I kinda hate these 2 videos where this other transmission guy appears. I feel that whenever Eric tries to explain to the public what the guy is saying/meaning, he rushes to say what he has to say because the transmission guy keeps talking over Eric's speech.
    Eric, simply re-do the video without this Cangaroosi (or whatever it is spelled) guy, and explain the info in your usual way. He has a terrible attitude. I wonder why you simply didn't edit him out: the guy stops talking so you can speak, you are in the middle of a sentence and the guy resumes talking giving zero f***s. In both videos he does the same. What a disrespectful guy.

      They are explaining something, not having a discussion. Unfortunately, the transmission guy clearly seems he hasn't been on such a didactic video before, and maybe he was just acting naturally and he didn't mean to be rude.
      I know nobody's perfect and that I can't expect other to think like me or anyone else, but, c'mon... whenever you are explaining or talking along with somebody else, you know you have to take turns. It's something one learns from you parents or at school, unless you didn't give a dang about that.

    Some people just don't get it. Eric, I believe, Is taking what he has and making it work. That is the truest form of hot rodding. I'm sure if Eric wanted to he could go all out. He could put in some form of computerized crap. And then go digital with the speedo if he wanted. But instead he has opted to do this the old school way. By taking a combo of parts and making them work. Again, That is true hot rodding. As far as the guy goes that has taken time out of his day to fly out to help Eric with his trans,
    Why should anyone give two shyts on a hot a hot rock about his attitude? This is Eric's video. If he is OK with the guy, that's all that matters. I'm sure the guy knows what he is doing. Or Eric wouldn't have bothered with him. Now, Where is the whole rebuild video? I hope to see a complete video of this trans rebuild.

      +GALAXIE 500XL Thanks for this comment. Sometimes a small majority of people loose sight that they are getting great video production and information for free. The reason I decided to do a rebuild video with Eric is because he has a way better environment than my shop, a great camera man and awesome editing. The idea was to put out one of the best rebuilding videos for a T5 transmission. I know its going to be great. I was really surprised to see people poking fun about me being Italian. I'm not used to that mindset. I work with race teams and people who build pro-touring cars on a daily basis and in 34 years have never been subjected to the kind of disrespect I have seen from some of these people.

    • @galaxie500xl7

      +GearBoxVideo What it is, these people who are shooting from the lip are actually people who have no idea what they are doing. They like to run their mouth and hide in front of their keyboards. In other words, Trolls. The more you know about what you are doing, the more trolls you will attract. Eric doesn't seem to get a lot of trolls on his channel. But sometimes he does get them. The best thing to do is forget about it. I think I know what Eric is doing. Because I've done it myself. The cheapest way of doing something. But still doing it right and having a good outcome. That's also true hot rodding. A lot of folks don't have mega bucks to throw at a car. I'm reasonably sure Eric doesn't. The way he is doing this is the way a lot of people would do it. The speedo isn't what will spank the guy next to you when the tree lights come down.

Im about to pull it out this week amd see what tooth count is on the output shaft..but my question is how does it determine which ome you need if it isnt the original one? Maybe I'm missing something here..does the drove gear on the outout shaft not matter which one it counts as to what speedo gear we hook up to that to make it work or do i have this wrong? 😬 sorry 1st timer here trying figure this out.

      Each drive gear has a range depending what rear gears you have, Ex. A black drive gear might work wit 2.25 - 3.55 rears, then you fine tune it with the different driven gears the one that go on the spedo cable.

    Can anyone help me with a question I have. I recently purchased a 2000 Chevy Blazer with 200000 miles on it . The guy told me he has ran Mobil 1 synthetic in it since he bought it brand new. The car does have a small oil leak, would switching back to a thicker conventional motor oil fill in the space and possibly minimize my oil leak or should I just stick with the Mobil 1 synthetic? I am extremely good about changing oil and am wondering if conventional will help keep oil leaks at bay?

    • @BiggusDickus2
      @BiggusDickus2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no. it will not fix an oil leak.

    • @FCFordLord
      @FCFordLord 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mobil 1 isn't a good oil to begin with (sheering issues are common), but switching from it to a heavier oil wouldn't help with a leak.
      Heavier helps with slight burning, changing brands helps with burning (Mobil 1 is well known for burning issues from sheering), but not leaks.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The factory uses different colors for identification of different tooth counts. Most people will not know the color codes and the colors do fade over time. So laying them on their side is the best way to count the teeth where they come to an end. The yellow gear is 7 teeth and the other light blue gear was 8 teeth.

    Does the trans have to be dropped again to change out the speedometer gear inside?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some automatics its possible to remove the tail to change the drive gear. With a T5 and most manuals that is not possible.

      @@GearBoxVideo well that sucks...I wish I had seen this video before I swapped out the 3 speed with a toploader and installed a new rear axle with lower gears. Maybe I can peak in the hole to determine what color the drive gear is and try to go from there.
