Some tips from a linocutter: 1. You seem to have figured it out, but rule 0 is don’t carve toward yourself. That includes your other hand that is gripping the block. There is a special tool called a bench hook that is made to keep the block from sliding when you carve. I would suggest that you invest in one if you plan to continue carving. 2. If you have trouble with how hard the block is, heat it up. Linoleum gets softer when it it warm! Either leave it in the sun for a few minutes of use a hair dryer. 3. Instead of moving your gouge in big sweeps, try wiggling it just a bit as you go. It really makes it better carving. 4. When you’re cleaning the block after printing, don’t rub it with anything textured if you are planning to use it again. Little grooves can form on its surface, and that’s bad news for an art medium that is purely using negative space. 5. There are linoleum blocks like the one that you used, and there are ones that are mounted on cork. Both types are good in their own ways. The type you had, which is just a thin linoleum slab, is nice because you can simply cut off outer pieces instead of having to deal with lots of chatter (which is what the completely carved out areas are called. The lines in these spaces are “chatter lines”). However, they also slide easily and are more fragile. With linoleum that’s mounted on cork, you can’t cut anything out, so you have to deal with a lot of chatter, but it doesn’t slide around nearly as much, especially if you have a bench hook, and it is much sturdier. It’s all a matter of preference which one you use (I like the ones on cork). 6. Pieces really do turn out nicely when you use ink. However, it can be pretty expensive. A good brand to buy ink from, and pretty good carving tools from as well, is Speedball. I usually like to buy my blocks from them, since they are only 6-7 dollars from them at 5x7 dimensions, which is a good size. Hope these were helpful to someone! (: Feel free to ask me anything, too
Oo I have some more tips I'd like to add. If you ink up your piece and do some trial runs, leave the linoleum alone for like a day and it'll hold on to ink so much better than the day before. To get off all the scraps or dust like particles after your finished carving, I like to use a cheap toothbrush and lightly go across the whole piece in little circle motions. Newsprint is the go to paper for trials and Stonehenge is the go to for final results. Finally, if you do accidently break a piece of your linoleum off, superglue works, but make sure you don't get any on the part that you'll be inking, because the ink won't stick on it.
Oh also Stonehenge has a right side and a wrong side. Most of the time the wrong side is the side that has a number written on it in pencil that's on it when you buy it.
Tips that I have learned over the years of doing linoleum printing: -Get a heat gun if your continuing doing this -You can rub graphite on the back and trace it to have those lines then go over it on the linoleum with sharpie (or another marker that doesn’t wash off with water, I have made that mistake before) -Get a smaller brayer! You can use a smaller brayer then do a light ink layer over a couple times can make your prints come out clearer and those small details will come through. -Don’t flip the linoleum onto the paper, flip the paper onto your linoleum, rub it with your hand to get the friction, then roll it, peel a corner off, and let gravity do its work to pull it off. -wash your hands before you peel off the linoleum so you keep your paper clean and free of fingerprints or smudges -Make sure your space is also clean, don’t roll ink in the same place your paper is -You can also use chalk or transfer paper for a sketch/line design to the linoleum All of these things I have had to figure out the hard way and my grade (and art quality) had decreased because of those mistakes I made over the years. Obviously if you want more tips on a few other things on any type of printing (linoleum, wood, screen, etc...) I have plenty that would be helpful.

ok so in art class this year I was cutting something out with an x-acto knife and I accidentally sliced my finger open. my finger started bleeding a lot, all over the portrait I had done for an art competition at school! The worst part was that the portrait was due at the end of class in order to be submitted for the competition! I was embarrassed so I didn’t tell my teacher but the kid next to me (thank god) got me some paper towels and I tried to clean as quickly as I could. I then proceeded to cut out the portrait with one hand and then glued it onto a different piece of paper. my teacher never noticed 😂
We are all 12 when we go to high school in Australia lol. I was 11 in grade 8 because I started school early. We generally start prep the year we turn 5, then year 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 is primary school and we then go to high school to do years 7,8,9,10, 11 and 12. I think it is stupid, year 7 should still be primary school. We just changed over in my state because year 7 used to be primary school but the other states have been doing it that way for yonks.
Hainne Lim I said he sucked because he took credit on his channel for someone else’s work. Watch the one where pand4 boss says that he made a song that he hopes we like.
The secondary school equivalent of high school in Australia is from ages 11 to 18 if im not mistaken. Newsflash, there are more countries with many different schooling systems in the world than the US!
Jazza I really appreciate your willingness to admit that you haven't tried things before, and I also like seeing you improvise! I appreciate how down to earth and relatable you are in that way. (:
I wish I could do this again. I did this in high school, and it was actually one of my favorite art projects. I had never heard of it before, so I was surprised with how well mine went! I think it’s because I was a more patient carver than my classmates. The carving went really well, but I screwed up applying the paint quite a few times. We had to make layered ones, so we carved the first layer, printed it, and then carved the same block further for the foreground of the print. So we couldn’t reuse our blocks like stamps because we basically ruined them all by the second carving. I can’t draw at all, but sculpting and carving actually works pretty well for me. Guess it’s time to invest in some carving tools...
Sounds like you did a reduction print. :) They take a lot of planning, but have some seriously neat results. You should hop back in to lino. There's a great FB group called "Linocut Friends" if you're keen on getting in to it more seriously. The medium is really fun. I'm glad it's been gaining popularity recently.
I cut my finger during art class in 8th grade using one of those things right after our teacher told us not to. I started bleeding but played it off like it wasn't a big deal but it really hurt :00000
Usually this is the case, but this time i wasn't really that impressed, i mean the drawing itself and the carving out of it was really good, but the actual outcome was quite dissapointing in my opinion, i've done this before and he did quite alot wrong... im not hating im just critiqueing (JUST THIS VIDEO IN THE OTHER ONES EVERYTHING IS AMAZING)
I'm not surprised. Oftentimes, people who are good at drawing are also skilled in other areas of art as well. That's my observation as a graphic arts student.
@Jeeblets Aside from the obvious of using acrylic paint instead of ink, you typically want to keep the lino face up and then place the paper on top, smoothing the paper rather than struggling to push the lino down. He does it once but then resorts back to flipping the lino over instead. Not to mention he also makes the final piece harder on himself to make by cutting out a lot of the lino to use as a stencil rather than re-using the same block after washing it clean of the original colour. I'm not sure if other people cut the block to make a stencil like Jazza did, but I was taught never to do that as it leads to more room for error (like a wonky boarder or in Jazza's case, broken pieces)
I have also injured myself carving out Lino in school. Kinda stabbed the tip of my finger with the carving tool. The art didn't even look good, totally wasn't worth it lol
I never have, (Edit: cut myself, grazed my fingers with the tool once though) but the art still turned out bad. (I also only got to stamp it twice before we were kicked out for Quarantine, so that was great.)

I have a similar scar on my left index finger. I was in a photography class and sliced open my finger cutting mat frames! Three stitches and all my photography instructor could say is buy them premade! She was a great photographer, but not the most nurturing of persons. She actually had dead plants in her office covered with cobwebs. I have fond memories of that class. Great video Jazza!
I am always accidentially saying that. Cause where I live theres only 2 schools. Grade 1-4 is elementary school and 6-12(or 13) is high school. So ehm you start "high school" at 10. But then I usually realize that the person I am talking to won't know that and will assume the average high school aka 9-12th grade
Hey jazza. You know those face printers that you could put a hand or face in and it would liner it using those plastic sticks? You should buy a huge one and draw it using that.
As a woman with deformed wrists, I have a real love/hate relationship with lino carving. I love how satisfying it is but hate how I get super sore and tired very quickly.
Ok so I know this is an older video but it came up in my recommendations. I took a class in college. I have a tip. (Or two) Use anti slip mat under the block while carving. These are often used in kitchens as drawer liner Also use your dominant palm at the back of the carving tool and two fingers of your non dominant hang on not quite the tip, but part of the metal to push your tool (this was what the professor had told us to do and it made carving the linoleum smoother)
IKIIIIIIIINKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK AHHHHHHH JAZAAAA ITS LITERALY CALLED LINO PRINT MAKING AHHHHHHHHHHHHHGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Hey since you’ve done this try some more multi block, or reduction prints. Maybe even try some woodcut relief! Also please turn your block not your tool around curves! The first few moments of this carve had me so nervous!!! If you want to make the jazzatar a stamp to keep, reinforce it with a slab of wood and add a handle! I also recommend using relief printmaking ink and a jig for registering accurately and consistently. Brayer instead of a sponge roller (which soaks up your ink/paint). Anyway would love to see more of this. As you seemed to enjoy it a lot and I absolutely love printmaking like this! (Particularly woodcut as it has a certain warm to it and is easier to do puzzle cut blocks like your final product! I recommend a 3 layer birch plywood with quick wood polymer for repairs :P )
great vid, I'd love to see these prints with the right paint or ink. You should experiment with Rorschach paintings! they're easy, fun to make and look so satisfying when you're done! I've got a bunch on Etsy.

Love your videos Jazza! I’ve neglected art for a while and watching your videos has helped inspire me to take risks, and learn so many new art style! So thank you so much 🥰 So excited for print making I love it so much and can’t wait to learn how to do it at home!!
I did this at school too (year 7 or 8), a few decades ago now! I recall doing multiple colours by masking the block and/or painting on the colour in specific areas. No injuries that I remember, the boys were closely supervised . . .
I can't believe I'm saying this to the guy that does art for a living but, acrylic dies in about 3 minutes while oil paint with the speed up chemical take 3 days.
I did that at school... It was so painful I cut my finger every 5 seconds and I hated the result of the artwork. It wasn't as clear as I wanted it to be. 😂
I like to think in the future Jazza will pay a witch to enchant his Jazza stamp so if he “Jazzaes” someone they slowly turn into Jazza. I guess you could say his Jazza stamp would be obnoxious, but consistent.
It makes me happy when you incorporate things you have learned from past videos into your art, like the doodling

THIS MAN WAS 12 IN HIGH SCHOOL I WAS 12 IN 6th GRADE
I know the school system is different in Australia BuT sTiLl
We are all 12 when we go to high school in Australia lol.
7th grade to 12th grade is high school for us

JohnIs_Trash that’s unnecessarily rude
Hainne Lim I said he sucked because he took credit on his channel for someone else’s work. Watch the one where pand4 boss says that he made a song that he hopes we like.
JohnIs_Trash oh that’s reasonable. You should have put some context tho lol
JohnIs_Trash ooo I’m sry for assuming
Só is everyone gonna ignore the fact that he said he was 11 or 12 in HIGHSCHOOL???
MAYOO Maybe the high school designation is different in Australia?
In Britain and Australia the school system is very different search it up if need be
yh im british and im in highskl.......
Yeah I was in secondary school at 11
The secondary school equivalent of high school in Australia is from ages 11 to 18 if im not mistaken. Newsflash, there are more countries with many different schooling systems in the world than the US!
You should do a video where you create an art piece using all the different skills you have learned from Skill Share
Can you make an art challenge where you try to use ALL of your colored markers in one single drawing?
It would be interesting to see
Jazza I really appreciate your willingness to admit that you haven't tried things before, and I also like seeing you improvise!
You probably did linoleum print? Usually there you carve every layer on the same plate :0
We make lino art every year in school 😂 I've stabbed myself more times than I'm proud to say :p

honestly, I love printmaking with lino blocks

this sounds really hard... how does jazza keep making amazing art with these materials?? so talented :OOO
I see Hamilton 👀
I see you've been perfecting your doodling skill as well, great piece of art work, time to add another skill level to your arsenal lol
PLEASE TRY EMBROIDERY
I have also injured myself carving out Lino in school. Kinda stabbed the tip of my finger with the carving tool. The art didn't even look good, totally wasn't worth it lol

Block printing was one of my favorite parts of art class in high school. I'd love to do it again.

"11 or 12 in high school" dang you smart jazza.
Kaden Eckert Australian high school starts at 11 and 12
I am always accidentially saying that. Cause where I live theres only 2 schools. Grade 1-4 is elementary school and 6-12(or 13) is high school. So ehm you start "high school" at 10. But then I usually realize that the person I am talking to won't know that and will assume the average high school aka 9-12th grade

So excited for print making I love it so much and can’t wait to learn how to do it at home!!
I did this at school too (year 7 or 8), a few decades ago now! I recall doing multiple colours by masking the block and/or painting on the colour in specific areas. No injuries that I remember, the boys were closely supervised . . .
The final picture would have been a great mural
