Leah never ceases to amaze me. She is such a blessing to those of us who have to make repairs ourselves to save money ( broke single mom here) without investing in costly tools. Paint stirrers!!! What a great idea and free at any big home store. Thank you Leah for all the help you have provided me and countless others. You are so very appreciated.

Hi Leah. Haven’t read all of the comments because there are so many. Just a tip on shim use. You don’t use them like a wedge. Rather, you place them on either side of the space to be filled narrow edge to narrow edge. Then when you bring them together they remain parallel to the reference surface and the door, or door jamb etc. This fills the void fully. Especially critical plumbing door jambs etc.
    Keep up the good work.

I came across your video while studying up on how to fix a door that sticks. Your easy instructions on proper tools, carving the wood for the hinge and using shims for proper placement helped me to successfully lower my front door which was sticking so badly, the door was beginning to break at the top! The sound also used to scared small children. It now opens easily and silently. Thanks for the help!!

That was awesome!!! Today I bought a new door and i will be installing in into an existing jamb. I had no clue whatsoever as to how to transfer the measurements from the hinges. Leah, you make it look so easy, you are amazing!! thank you so very much.
I particularly love what you said at the end of the video."This is Leah and you can do it" I love it, you motivated me to do the job.
    God bless you!!!

Your methods worked perfectly. Thanks for the tips. I'm not afraid of a project, but I also don't have a lot of home repair experience. I bought a new door, realized I didn't know what I was doing because nothing would line up. I decided to youtube it.
Glad I did, found your video and figured stuff out. I didn't have shims, and I couldn't find my chisel, but after watching your video I knew I could make it work. I grabbed a couple of paint stir sticks and some screw drivers and a beer. I used the screw drivers for leverage to lift the door. The paint sticks worked great. With my feet working the screwdrivers and the paint sticks limiting their height, I marked the door with a mechanical pencil. Took the door out and found my new favorite tool that's been on the bench for a few years, the Rockwell Sonicrafter. I never realized how awesome this tool was. I didn't miss the chisel at all. I flew through the door hinge fitting with it, but then I had to line up the new door handle hardware. I literally had to recreate the door jamb to fit the new hardware for this door, the metric hammer wouldn't cut it alone. I'm rambling, but your video definitely helped. I used your video for hanging the video, not to fix my new door hardware. I couldn't be happier, my door shuts perfectly, and after finally fixing my door jamb, it latches, too.
For anyone interested in how I fixed the door jamb, I removed about an 18 inch section of it, and replaced it with new 1/4 inch plywood. Drywall screws to attach it to the existing good jamb and then chiseled out for the door lock hardware.

This was amazing. What I love is you don't take for granted any of the newbie stuff that would be issues. For example, in this video you mentioned the 1/4 inch hang of the hinge coming out which most videos would have skipped over but is so important or using the shims. This is the first video of yours I've seen and look forward to seeing more of them. Much appreciated!

I do love your videos and was so glad yours came up in my search. I have a situation where I removed a door and replaced the wall wood to clean it up for my handicapped father (so he didn't have to deal with the door with his wheelchair and the jam had a lot of different drill marks so I just replaced the wood new) but now as I sell the house after he is no longer with us, I need to re hang the door but I don't have the inset or holes on the door jam. This may not be exactly the way I need to do it but it for sure gave me skills to figure it out. Thank you.

Just a tip for anyone interested in making this even easier. Make sure you properly hone your chisel before starting. This can be the difference between a tough going job and an easy one, and it also significantly decreases the risk of accidents since a honed chisel will do most the work for you and you wont find yourself fighting with the wood. Honing guides can make this step fairly fool proof and although it requires a little investment of time and effort, it is worth it. And in case you weren't sure whether your chisel is honed or not, if you just bought it, I can almost guarantee it is not honed. A honed chisel will contain the primary bevel Leah identified in the video (the angled face) and a secondary bevel too which will be another much smaller angled face just off the cutting edge. A professionally honed chisel is like a razor, but for the average DIYer a little time spent with a honing guide and whetstone is enough to make a huge difference.

Great video and, since I just happened to have to hang a new door on in an old casing, it was a Godsend. Having said that, I'd like to offer one observation: At approximately 3:57 in the video, you demonstrate how to measure from the back of the hinge pin, to the the edge of the door jamb, and you indicated it was approximately 1/4". In reality, since you used the front of the tape to measure, you would have to account for the thickness of the end piece...which is probably around 1/16". To put that in perspective: a 1/16" variation, over the course of 16" will create a 1" gain or loss. Multiply that times 8' (a typical wall stud) and you can see the potential problems.
I know it sounds trivial, but too many people forget to allow for the thickness of saw blades, etc., and end up making some bad cuts. Obviously, if the cut is too long, you just cut more off. But, once the cut is made too short....you have to spend time, effort and -sometimes- money to fix the mistake.
Thanks for the video and I look forward to learning more tricks.

Wwhat a great video, very well narrated and so informative. I have hung several doors both interior and exterior but I like to look at videos like yours to see in I can pick up any tips to make the next one easier. I plead guilty to snatching a couple paint stir sticks on every visit to the home improvement center. :) The only thing I could offer is for first time chisel users its easy to go too deep or to shallow when "mortising" for the hinge. What I find helpful is to use my razor knife to score the hinge pocket area with slices about 1/4" apart and to the depth of the hinge plate. Then when chiseled the smaller pieces pop out and its easier to maintain the proper depth and clean up the area with the chisel. Thank you for an excellent video.

Leah, thank you so much for all of your videos. I love it how you explain everything in the most simple way for even the novice to understand. I also appreciate the fact that you use tools that most of us already have in our garage/toolbox. I hate nothing more than looking at a video thinking I can tackle a project only to realize I will need to refinance my home to purchase all the fancy tools in order to complete it 😳. Keep up the great work! I appreciate you!
Now if you can only teach me how to convert my double folding door closet doors to regular doors I’d be a happy girl!!! ❤️

Thanks so much I looked through about a dozen videos and no one answered the questions u showed here. Every one skips the chisel parts or doesnt even mention it or goes on some long complicated thing using electric tools and stuff I never heard of lol. Thank you!
