Very sad that my comment got lost in the ether of youtube. Basically. Shortly after Chuck released this record he was diagnosed with Brain Cancer. After ridiculous amounts of money and nearly bankrupting his family, he was deemed cancer free. As Chuck was wrapping up the Control Denied record, his cancer returned, and I remember as I had just come down to Florida at the time (Death is from Tampa) all the fundraisers going on to get money for Chuck's treatment. But musicians have no health insurance. And despite eventually raising enough for treatment, it was to late and less than a year after its return, Chuck was dead. The last song on that last album from Control Denied was "The Fragile Art of Existance".
As people have said, Chuck was a really really sweet guy that loved animals and his family and was an incredible lead guitarist and songwriter with a unique voice that had tons of character (it is a bit tough to get in to at first though, Vektor is similar). The world lost a giant in the metal community and he is considered by many to be the father of death metal (Scream Bloody Gore was one of the first ever death metal records, some debate exists but the other bands were all in the same year span). And without a groundbreaking record like Human, progressive and melodic death metal would sound very different if it would even exist at all as we know it.
    RIP Chuck

Its a really tragic story, he was so innovative and only 34 when he passed. Cancer sucks. Check out this interview with him that I think is really something to show to anyone who makes assumptions about the people in a band with the name of Death. th-cam.com/video/VuX2cPOQ5qY/w-d-xo.html

Did he die of cancer? I read somewhere that his cancer treatment was actually successful, but he got some kind of lung inflammation after he was released, because he couldn't afford to stay in hospital. These things are pretty common after serious treatments. I had it happen in my family, but thank god the European healthcare system would never allow just releasing someone in that state, no matter what their financial situation is.

Don't get me wrong, Voice Of The Soul is amazing, but what are they gonna talk about? It's all subjective interpretation. For a second round, I'd rather suggest something from Symbolic, 1000 Eyes or Crystal Mountain.
They're also much less Opeth-esque or Jazz-influenced for that matter. In fact, I personally don't think Flesh is a very good introduction to Death at all for a regular metalhead.

“The metal in this song is meh” you must have incredibly high standards to say that. Death is an insanely technical band especially for the time period. “The metal is Meh” is something you can say about a band like Avenged Sevenfold or something. NOT THE FOUNDER of death metal. That would be like saying you find Black Sabbath’s guitar playing bland..

Exactly. I try to tell this to everyone as well: While his contribution to metal puts him on the top, Chuck was one of the kindest and great men to walk the earth. There are so many stories of small things that he did just because he wanted to be nice.

/mu/ck Of course anybody can post such like this with no fear of rebuttal (since Chuck has now passed.) While there may be certain instances where he actef like that, on the whole this seems a touch fabricated (unless you have some first hand knowledge or experience?) "The guitarist Shannon Hamm and bassist Scott Clendenin were present in the line up of Death and Control Denied, the two bands captained by Chuck Schuldiner. More than music, there was and still there a feeling of friendship that goes beyond time, silences and absences.
"There are no words to describe Chuck, how much influence he has had or will continue to have the years that follow. He was unique and very genuine. He always wanted everyone around him feel good, treating everyone with respect, regardless of your situation or circumstance. Chuck Schuldiner was simply the most sensible and the kindest human being I have ever known. I think that his words and his music remain strong enough that people understand this without being told anything", says Shannon Hamm.
For the guitarist, being a part of Death and Control Denied was a very rich experience. "I could write an entire book on this single issue. Being a member of an influential band was the high point in my life. When Chuck got sick, it was like a dream becoming nightmare because I was witnessing the fall of a soul so remarkable, and there was absolutely nothing I could do to help. I could go on forever trying to explain everything that I learned from Chuck, either as musician or as a person. To me, Chuck Schuldiner was more than one friend, he was like a brother ", he says.
Shannon Hamm said he have a letter from Chuck, where he describes his last requests. "I keep the final letter he wrote me under lock and key. This letter explains in detail the whole album, title, order, and his final wishes. I will never be in peace until these last requests are fulfilled. After waiting anxiously for the completion and release of the final masterpiece of Chuck for almost a decade, I can still say with confidence that I will keep standing up against anything on the market today. The job of a true genius never becomes obsolete and the spirit of Chuck still has much to say", he concludes.
The same emotion can be seen in the bassist Scott Clendenin, who remembers that period of life as ‘a great step.’ "Chuck and I used to go out in the early days, more than the other guys. We went to Orlando a lot. He was very respectful of others and kind to everyone around. We exchanged many experiences together going to parties, clubbing, chasing women. We were "brothers of Metal ', and I miss my friendship with Chuck. I think there's a lesson this time and it is related about how musicians become close when they work together. There is a fellowship a little deeper than the mere co-workers,” concludes Clendenin."

Be sure to let Gene Hoglan and the many others about that.
Chuck was an assertive business man and very stubborn when it came to his principals. That only made him achieve what he has. The thing you do hear mostly, is "Him having a gentle soul". A gentle soul doesn't mean that he would bend over to anyone.
When people who could trash on him and smear his importance if they wanted to, talk highly of him as a person and a musician... I take their word for it.

    • @squashedeyeball
      @squashedeyeball 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      /mu/ck
If he was not friends with Cynic anymore, we can assume that something went on between them? I don't know, I'm not them or Chuck. Do all people get along? No. I have one friend who will say that I'm a good man, but the guy next door will hate me.
Unlike Chuck, I don't have many, many other people who will talk highly of me. But I also don't have many others who will have feuds with me.
So, Chuck was just a man, like all of us. But from what we know "fatsos" like Hoglan (Who is very respected) and others, his positive sides were very clear.
And he was still very young when that took place with Atheist. As they themselves said, it was edgy calling your band Death, Chuck was young and wanted to try the extremes in metal. And as they added, later he became open to more technicality. Again, he's a man, like us. I am no way near what I was at 16, I am no way near what I was at 25 either.
That being said, they didn't try to trash him. They just said that contrary to what *people" think (Not Chuck himself), Atheist and Cynic did their own thing and Death were not the sole creators of technical metal.
Many of us consider Chuck to be the godfather of the genre, but well, Death was the bigger band back then.
What Martin van Drunen said in an interview 5 years after Chuck's death is all nice and fitting, in his perspective. Chuck has NO way of responding to that. There are always two sides to every coin and how comfortable in this case that Chuck was dead, unable to respond...
And saying something like "Therefore his death meant not much to me" (From the interview), is a clear indexation of him being a salty man. As a fellow musician, he could show some class. Like the guys from Atheist, who knew how to give their own perspective while still remaining both respectful and making sense.
      Kam Lee...
"Chuck wanted to be the center of attention... He couldn't stand it that all the little whores wanted to suck my cock and not his... So he wanted some of those sluts lusting for his boy sausage as well! So he decided to start singing.."
This is not a serious man to me. Plus he talked trash himself on another cover artist in this very interview.
He is talking about the really early days of Death, when Chuck was forming and shaping the band. Chuck writing songs, lyrics and singing was him wanting to be the center of attention? Or could it be that he has a vision to his band and so acted upon it?
"Yeah, i wanted to record this stuff, but because of the whole shit between Chuck and myself it never got the true spotlight it deserved! Too bad really... Who knows, maybe all the death fans should write to Chuck and convince him to record this stuff with me, and then we could show the world what real Death Metal is!"
So he wanted more spotlight for himself, his and Chuck's egos were "... too big for the both of us!"
, but he doesn't mind getting back to death to write a song (I assume this interview took place in 2000).
What I get from it? Kam Lee and Chuck were VERY young in 84/85, they had some fights/arguments. That's it pretty much. People grow up and chance. Sad that Kam Lee didn't.
I don't know why you are so angry at Chuck... For those "best man to walk the earth" comments? Well, from what many others say about him, he was a one of a kind guy who was very passionate about metal and indeed in fact had a kind heart. Despite all that, he was just a man of course.

How can you say that's not top Vin??? Did you know Death and his craftman, Chuck defined the whole Death Metal genre???? Without him, probably a lot of bands you have listened on this channel never would exist.
Riffs with class and emotion (look at his riffing while doing solos... nobody plays of that way). Rhytmic section top notch for sure, with great jazzy elements, executed by quality musicians .
Check out their discography, because each album they released reworked the whole Death metal world itself, creating Progressive Death metal along with Atheist and Cynic I would say.
Their lyrics have been nearly a life changer for a lot of people, for sure. He usually read about Platon and Nietzsche, specially the last one regarding the vitalist and anti-religious themes he used on his works. He delivered them in such a great poetic way...

I’m interested to know what you mean by “the Metal”? Death, Nevermore, Strapping Young Lad and Opeth have all been scored fairly low by Vin when referencing “the Metal” yet are praised as pioneers in their respective genres. Judas Priest was also scored low yet helped birth the entire Metal genre. So could you please define what you’re looking for in “the Metal”.
If I could also make a suggestion for your underground reactions: try Suffocation’s “Catatonia” or Dimmu Borgir’s “Kings of Carnival Creation”.

Lolz. I think near the end it was the length of song, like a lot of songs of that time, such as Metallica, kinda just lingered on longer than needed for the limited lyrics and riffs. I think the middle solo was used to gap out the song, but once it picked up it really didnt go anywhere else. Death is a HUGE classic among death metal and thrash, but it still suffers from the genres formulas for this era. Song could have been more concise.

So Death is the pioneer of death metal and redefined the genre each time with each album and highly recommend you listen to some other areas of Chuck's discography so Pull the Plug or Spiritual Healing is the old school genre defining death metal e next step would be the more progressive stuff before they went to this might be more of your liking i.e. "The Philosopher". If you want some more clean and progressive listen to breaking the broken from his side project before Chuck died Control Denied. This might have not have been the best starting song as its not a straight forward instrumentally but either way good talk and the whole flesh talk was quite interesting

I love this track - I think in your analysis, Sori is more onto it - If you listen to some of Death's other work (crystal mountain, living monstrosity) they are critical of a certain type of care-free attitude - the "I can do what I want" aspect of modern society, without an appreciation for the Consequences.
I've always listened to this song in 2 ways:
1: a critique of Materialism - that without anything of substance - if you simply live for Pleasure, you will end up destroying everything
2: A cautionary tale about how strong various impulses are

Yea no joke, this album was considered genre defining. I love the riffs in this one. I think the progginess of the song may have dulled some of the impact for you. I'm still suprised you like Tool as much as you do. But next time do Empty Words or Spirit Crusher if you really want something with memorable riffing and metal.

Hey Vin I hate to say it but Sori outclassed you on this one man the lyrics are pretty much in your face at face value, you trying to add biblical references to certain lyrics you're being over analytical dude,Sori totally got it and thanks for not doing another Tool video appreciate the break but Hey you guys need to do another a Black Fire vid.I suggest Belphegor's song Baphomet and by the way Belphegor is like Behemeth their blackened death metal.Dark Funeral's Vobiscum Satanas,Nail Them To The Cross any song from Enthroned or Dimmu Borgirs Mourning Palace

    • @thenecrosanct4906
      @thenecrosanct4906 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's possible to put a biblical spin on any song. Doesn't mean it has anything to do with the song or the songwriter's intention, though. It's especially easy with Satanic and antichristian songs, but Death never had anything to do with that. I'm guessing Vin is using the bible as a lens when reviewing these songs, which in itself is an interesting approach but it just doesn't hold up half the time because the song has nothing to do with it.

Right, and it's me again ("hello me, it's me again",) and now I am conflicted - before I fell asleep yesterday I had a thought about Vin that kind of emerged due to me not really being sure what's going on with him in the above. Don't think he will like it too much, and don't claim it's spot on, but makes too much sense to me...
... so I will just write it out anyways, because now it's too late. What if Vin and Sori, as they stated initially, indeed made the channel and all the Village ideas kind of winging it and Vin felt great about Christianity and bringing people together, but now the opposite is happening (people's perspectives making Vin unsure about his faith)... That is, he subconsciously feels that doubling-down of Christianity in the long run will only bring more and more internal conflicts and he will have to restrict his mind one day to stay "true" to his faith. I know he often mentions how his faith is solid as a rock, but that's not helping... it's often a sign that at the fundamental level this is not the case, and it's an arbitrary choice, but then, if it's an arbitrary choice, then what really is the intrinsic value in it... Sooner or later there's no escape from those spirals of thoughts, and maybe Vin is starting to sound "weird" because does not now what to do with the whole situation so rejects the possibilities there are there, in plain sight, in lyrics of bands such as Death. When this happens, you have Sori making perfect sense and everyone else thinking "wait, what happened to Vin from a week ago..."
Now, of course I can be wrong, but, I am writing it anyways, because I would feel bad if Vin did not have a chance to consider the idea (and I can see that, if it was true, how it could scare the proverbial "shit" out of Vin and Sori, but I don't see it some kind of a disaster and a destructive force for the future: imo it can be mastered and forged into even better things ...
(Pretty sure that to some now I sound like some kind of Satan trying to twist Vin's mind... oh well...)

I always interpreted the song as about lust and how the flesh can deceive you into sorrow. "When beauty shows it's ugly face" - he's referencing the beautiful person who turns out to be ugly on the inside. Looks can be deceiving so you shouldn't be shallow and put too much value into what is pleasing to the eye.

What I got out of it is that there are two sides to every coin. A lot of people get so focused on the side they want to see, they cast a blind eye to the other side. An analogy I would think is someone seeing a beautiful frog and picking it up before realizing or even caring that it's a poison dart frog. How many people do you see buying something they can't truly afford so they can project a certain image, only to be living in debt and ultimate misery?

I don't think Vin took note of when the album was released(turns 20 this year), but I suppose it doesn't matter. I am also pretty sure he doesn't know who Death is or was.
"Average metal" hmm okay, I guess that would be correct if what I am assuming is true; which is that you like Tool a lot. I haven't listened to a tool song since I was probably 12 and still on myspace. Also haven't watched a Tool reaction video because I know I don't care for them.
I guess I understand that you didn't really like the song, but this was Death's 7th and final album and not a single album failed to progress, I'm almost certain it's the longest track on the album as well and I think it deserved to be with it's dire message, it's an epic like Trivium's Shogun. The further back you go in the Death discography the more raw it gets. I don't even know how you will like their earlier stuff, given that you seem like a mainstream metal person. I don't think I would like to know what "death metal" you do like if you even do.
I'm not sure what songs to suggest, I actually thought you BOTH would like this a lot and it's why I suggested it the day I found your channel.
Sori made a remark about the band possibly being a Christian band or something along those lines, and well no it seems. This is an interesting subject because on the previous album he makes a direct stab at Christianity with Crystal Mountain, BUT then there was this song 3 years later, and also another song on this album that suggests the end is "etched in the book." To further prove this assumption, in Chuck's side project Control Denied he has a song titled "Believe" and yeah, I think it confirms his beliefs, also another song on their only album titled When The Link Becomes Missing. The name of the album is The Fragile Art of Existence, so yes, Chuck was a very self aware person.
My suggestions are based on what I would like to hear from your Christian perspective.
    Death - Altering The Future
    Death - Spiritual Healing
    Death - Suicide Machine
    Death - In Human Form
    Death - Crystal Mountain
    Death - Symbolic
Rainbow - Man On The Silver Mountain
    Rainbow - Gates of Babylon
    Control Denied - Believe
Dio - Don't Talk To Strangers

Love the vids Vin and Sori! Although I've been a longtime listener of metal and its many sub-genres, I've never really looked into the lyrics of songs unless it is part of a concept album. Your videos are giving me a newfound appreciation for artists I never really paid much attention to due to not finding their initial sound appealing.
Also I recommend you two to check out The Secret of the Secret by Esoteric if you guys are ever feeling adventurous. For the underground show. Either In De Naam Van De Duivel or The Possession Process by Carach Angren. They're a symphonic black metal band that writes their albums as horror stories. These two work as stand alone songs though. Think you guys will love em.
And Babel's Gate by Septic Flesh. Symphonic Death metal and you'd get a kick out of the lyrics.

Bro it's been 5 years but I felt the need to correct you on that "beauty" argument. To understand what Chuck means here, you need to think the things like heroin addiction. From it's user's perspective it's the most beautiful experience one can ever had when ther first experience it but as they keep using it, it will reveal it's ugly face with visible deformations on the body, mental issues and the addiction itself. The beauty there isn't just about aesthetics like the beauty of the lady sitting next to you. It's a metaphor for all things make you want themselves by appealing you with their best qualities(like euphoria people feel when they first use the heroin) and keep you hooked up until the point that there is no more "you" left.

Also, just to add to the initial discussion about Chuck and the connection to Colossions, Chuck Shuldiner was a spiritual person who was very critical of what can be known as the “human condition,” which is the concept that humans are evil and selfish to the core. This can be seen in so many of his lyrics throughout his career, the most prevalent in his albums (in my opinion) Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Spiritual Healing, and The Sounds of Perseverance

I am not going to do it, but oh ho ho be prepared to be "schooled" about Death. Many of your viewers are NOT going to be pleased with Vin's score or comments about the metal lol.

Chuck died on my birthday. We (Sadistic Artistry) played his memorial show at the Brass Mug a week later. The best of times.

Now you guys definitely have to do some Vektor. Vektor are heavily influenced by the band Death, though they are more prog thrash with black metal vocals.

Death has a lot of really deep lyrics from the album Spiritual Healing and after where they got more progressive and melodic with each album. You should definitely check out more from them. I recommend anything from Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns or Human. You were spot in with your interpretation of the lyrics. I'd love to hear more.

so glad I met Chuck Schuldiner before he died, he is and always will be one of the biggest inspirations in music for me. Every time I listen to DEATH Chuck comes alive again, hes still with us and will never leave us.
