The original Death logo sported an upside down cross for the “T” but later Chuck changed it to more of an iron cross design because he didn’t want to be represented that way. A real case of hearing a songwriter truly mature and evolve for his own personal reasons and not to sell more records.

    • @KiNG_C0LD

@@KiNG_C0LD it was a German medal of Valor long before the Nazis existed, but they did use it so it’s kinda connected to the Nazis but not really. In Germany they’ve banned pretty much all Nazi symbols, but even they still allow the iron cross and use it as a medal. This was on Death's last album, and by this point in their career, they had pretty much transcended beyond death metal into more of a progressive metal band. In fact, from what i understand this was actually intended to be the first album of Chuck's follow-up band, Control Denied, and was supposed to have clean singing vocals, but the label insisted that he record harsher vocals for it and release it under the name Death. That band name's story: Chuck loved his brother so much. His best friend was his brother when they were kids. He lost his brother very young ages. He never forget his brother Frank, because i said, his best friend was his brother. So he named the band "Death" for memorial of brother. Source: www.emptywords.org/EmptyWords12-2010.htm
Also he was a philosopher. He just wrote some weird/gore lyrics for first album but he never loved this album. Because his opinion is: his songs must be meaningful deeply. He saw life with positive aspects. He never hated life and people. He loved people/animals and he hated money. So he was poor for treatment

Just to add a true story.
I went to a rehab called Times of refreshing.
It was a Seventh Day Adventist based place.
I was having hard times and one day i found a guitar in a closet .
I played it for about 2 days and all of a sudden the door burst open and an old mean lady named Barbara came in and snatched the guitar.
She said the Devils music would not be played in that place.
    I was broken.
I was playing Its been A while by staind .
I packed my bags and walked from Georgia to Clarksville tn.
The trip on foot from the Ocoee river, through Copperstown, etc etc changed me and helped more than the closed minded fools i left.
Thanks for being cool the world needs more of Christians like you.

Back in 1983 I sent away for a Demo tape of a band called Mantis. I was 16 in High School. The leader of the band Chuck.
."Evil Chuck" at the time. He was also 16 and washing dishes for some restaurant
He sent me his bands tape
Mantis. Not really that great. Poor production. But the c dude was really cool and into Metal like me. Hand written letter. He was very down to earth....reminded me of a friend of mine
We continued to write back and forth and he changed his name to "Death: band name.
They got alot better. Hired a dude Cam Lee. Great vocals. Better than Chucks.
I remember something happened and he said he might join Canadian thrash band Slaughter. Not to be confused w hair band of same name. They had a tune "Insinorater" I remember.
    But Death had Corpse Grinder...awesome
I think Cam then fronted Massacre..great band.
I bought first Death Lp. Then kinda got into other bands. He was coming up to NJ to play at "The Showplace" in like Dover Nj. He wanted to meet up and hang. This was like 1985
I threw out all my Metal memorabilia, letters ect
Wish I didnt. He was well respected not a follower.
Most so called death metal bands go off the deep end. He took the word Death as a real symbol of life. It happened. So intelligent. He used to always write.:Rot back soon Evil Chuck lol.But he evolved grew up

Wow. As a father and someone who has been, essentially condemned by religious figures during my life. Whether it be pastors, priests, chaplains, whatever title those "leaders of the church" have held, solely from my experience, this is somewhat refreshing on different levels. One, I want to most point out, is the fact you did this with your son. I could see in his reaction that he obviously loves metal music of different origins, but he is your son and the thing that stands out the most, is the fact that you as his father, encourage him and share memories in listening to and experiencing the music he is into. So many parents, regardless of religious affiliation, tell their kids that is devils music, or you're going to hell for listening to that or wearing the clothes you wear. So thank you for being open minded, taking your sons thoughts and likes into consideration. This has not been enough to fully convert me, but as a father, watching a father and son share the experience, epic win. Also, when I say "condemned" i do not mean that literally, but I had several friends pass away before we graduated high school and the mothers of those friends asked us to wear our favorite band t-shirts to the funeral, at which point, the pastor presiding, decided to go into this long sermon about how all of us "kids" were "damned to hell" for the music we listen to and the shirts we were wearing. It was very disheartening considering we were there to mourn the loss of a loved one, not to be preached at for our clothes or musical interests. It was supposed to be a remembrance of life, not a condemnation from a priest.

I listen to "mean" and "devil" music but I can still say that I am a true christian without lying to myself.

Just an interesting tidbit on their logo. Death used an inverted cross as the "t" in their name earlier on when the lyrical matter was focused more on theatrics and shock value. As time went on and the lyrics became more philosophical, they began raising up the horizontal part until it had vertical symmetry.
Compare their logos on the covers of Scream Bloody Gore and Symbolic to see what I mean.

Finally someone named Opeth... when I listen to them I'm mainly captured by the richness of their music made of multi-layers, some of which are so deep below others and hard to catch for a not fine ear, but their lyrics are also part of what makes of Opeth one of the best bands on the planet today and perhaps of all time. I cannot pick a song over another but hey Pastor @Robert Houghton I let you do the hard work here... I'm a non-believer and very critical with the concept of religion itself but I do already listen to you with care {and lotta respect, I'd say} so it makes sense to keep up my role a bit! PS: I believe a huge spot should be given to Layne Staley and Alice In Chains, because I believe there's a lot of messages there to analize and take out which can lead to making a service to yours community.

As a lifelong believer & lifelong metalhead & metal musician, life can be full of seemingly endless contradictions & "moral struggles" if you will. However, as you just experienced, all is not what it seems & there indeed is much light where it can appear darkness rules. I could go on forever, but I will just say it warms my heart to see a pastor glimpse into a world I know is one of the last to hear REAL truth. The metal community. Labels have kept us apart for too long. The most loving, compassionate, understanding, open-minded, intelligent & passionate people I know are metalheads. And when they stop judging believers & when believers stop judging them, THEN we will truly get somewhere.

Frederick and axe honestly play better than the original members on the back catalogue songs they play and Pers on the keyboard makes the old songs with no or bad keyboard mixes sound amazing. Just stream new albums before you buy them and dont complain because they still have the best back catalogue of any touring band.

I like this pastor guy. I appreciate that he's making a great effort to enjoy the music and it seems like he really is loving this track. Pastor man, may I suggest that you borrow the CD from your son and listen to the entire album, uninterrupted, from start to finish. It's a journey that is best enjoyed loud, and as said, uninterrupted. It's nice to see that a Christian pastor is sincerely attempting to listen to metal and giving it a chance from their perspective, instead of shunning it like most Christians do.

I wanted to tell you guys how much I appreciate what you do. From the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you. I grew up going to church and some of my fondest memories are going to church camp, one of my favorite times ever. As I grew I became an atheist, a devout atheist and lashed out. Years later I won’t say I’ve come full circle but I will say that through my personal experience that I will no longer say that there is no God. I don’t know exactly where I am at right now friends but I’m no longer willing to write off God. I really appreciate what you do because as a fellow musician, someone who actually really enjoys to listen to some of the darker music like slayer and death and so on, I love how you don’t judge the people by the music. There will always be some bad people out there however you can’t judge anyone by the music any more than you can judge an author for writing horror movies or horror stories like Stephen King. And I really appreciate the fact that you guys can look beyond a stereotype and actually look into the humanity of your fellow human beings. I love metal music, I’ve been listening to slayer death Sodom. And a bazillion other metal groups for the majority of my life but I’m also a good person, a father of three boys that I’m very proud of that Have grown and are now adults. I am an empathetic and compassionate human being and I really hope that I have taught my sons to be as well. Sorry didn’t mean to ramble but I just wanted to say that I appreciate what you guys do and for not being judge mental. I guess that’s really it. And I really like that you and your son can make these awesome videos.
