I'm a professional papermaker and love when artists start to get into handmade papers! A tip for when you are looking to work with handmade papers: Ask the maker if they add any sizing to their papers. Sizing can be internal (Added to the pulp) or external (Added to the surface once the paper is dry). Sizing is what allows us to use wet media on paper without the lovely soft fibers absorbing it all up. If a papermaker doesn't use sizing but you are in love with their paper, don't fear! You can always add external sizing. You can even make up an external sizing using egg whites ;) Some of my favorite watercolor papers are handmade paper that were never ever intended for watercolor but with a bit of sizing magic you get something really unique.
Not a papermaker - yet ^^' It's on my evergrowing list of things I want to try, though :3 I read somewhere that one can use gelatine, too. The handmade paper seems like it would be great for charcoal or conte. Not too great with pointy materials, too absorbent for wet media, but the pencil lifted VERY easily. You have lots of greys tones so you should totally try charcoal or less harsh pencils (mechanical pencils will definitely just rip at it)
You want to really see the wow factor on those metallics and holos use them on black paper. I have a set of 40 Mozart Komorebi Watercolors that has 6 neons and 8 metallics (you should definitely review them, they're like a budget friendly Gansai Tambi watercolours) and the metallics look good on white paper but they are stunning on black paper!
This is exactly what I need after 3 hours of science homework (and not looking at the checklist and spending over 2 hours on an assignment that was a choice between two- I had done the other one in 5 minutes -_-) thanks Kasey!!!! :)
I get specialty handmade watercolors from etsy (glitter, duo and multichromes, etc) and they are absolutely amazing. I also make and sell mini watercolor sketchbooks with all kinds of fancy fabrics that my customers seem to like.
I've actually had a bad interaction with Canson's paper before. Specifically the XL. It was so bad I thought I had lost any skills I had as a watercolour artist and nearly gave up entirely. I watched a paper comparison review on The Mind of Watercolours and only then did I learn that the problem was the paper. It's ok if you only do fairly flat colours, but the second you try to layer them it just eats the stuff into oblivion. If I were making watercolour books I'd not use anything that wasn't 100% cotton. Its just not worth the loss in quality. I'd want people to want to reach for my book at every chance and not rely on just those who don't need to layer a million times. No shade what so ever to people who like this paper. I am here and Kasey is known for that very smooth flat colour look and I LOVE it. My style just is super blend heavy and Canson XL doesn't really work for me. I mean I still use it for things like playing around with colours, testing values and it's great for things like greeting cards and making tags for gifts, but I can't make a painting on the stuff. All of this said, I haven't used the specific type of paper that is in that book and for all I know it could be god tier. I just wanted to say that in my opinion you _can_ in fact "go wrong" with Canson. Lol. I hope this helps.
Fkcucjsz. I wish I could have gotten this comment days ago. I ran to my art store just before my city went into lockdown (again) and picked up Canson's XL watercolour pad. And it just. More or less repelled the water. It's been a while since I've painted with watercolour, so I thought all me issues were all me. Thanks, I'll keep this in mind if I'm able to go to the store again.
@@Anjel1e I got lucky, after having trouble with my watercolour paper, and watching the review, I realized that I had some Arches watercolour paper I found when someone put it out on their curb for someone to come and take (had a "free" sign on it) and so when I was able to get over the depletion of self worth I felt, I used it and wow. If you can afford it, Arches is considered the best for a reason. I also purchased a small hot pressed watercolour block and it's my favourite. It's a Chinese company called Baohong and it's also 100% cotton. I really didn't know anything about the importance of paper when I first got good enough at watercolour that I was having fun, and The Mind of Watercolour really opened my eyes. I now look into the paper I buy just as much as I do the paint, and because I'm poor, I need to make sure things don't go to waste. Even though Canson is a fraction of the price of Arches, it's a bigger waste of money for me because I'm just not going to used it as much. Heck, I let my 10 year old use it, when I would never do so with the Arches stuff. I hope I'm able to help you for future purchases ♡.

It definitely depends on how you paint. I’ve used a lot of papers including Arches, and Canson XL 140 lb is my favorite for my painting style.
