Speaking economically, japan has what is known as a quality bubble. A quality bubble meams that their is no point in companies raising their price for quality because other competitors will have cheaper prices so everything stays the same price but quality improves

The paint is actually a refill for the Sakura paint set I live in Japan and when I run out of paint , etc, I usually buy the refill paint in Daiso , seria , 100円shop that’s why they come on separately

I don't live in japan, but the microns are like 2 dollars here. So it's kind of ok. But stuff like crayola are like 10-50 dollars. Even tho in North America it's supposed to be 1 dollar.

I know this just proves what a watercolour noob I am, but I never would have thought to put the white pencil crayon down before painting to make the highlights. These tools might be cheap but your execution with them makes them look top tier!

I'm not sure if you ever did it in elementary. But they yes to make you draw a hard line on one piece of paper and draw lightly over it with crayon and you get a picture. That's how I slowly learned about highlights atleast

And compared to the US, a lot of jobs such as a software engineer or a doctor get payed alot less in japan than the US. Food can be more expensive, houses are far more expensive and even some products can be more expensive (of course, excluding art supplies lmao)

I found a pack of 11 PaperMate Inkjoy gel pens for about $8 at Walmart (in North America). They’re water proof (for me at least) and come in 3 different sizes. I use them for my watercolors and Copics.

The Japanese are known for quality, specially when it comes to art. Many factors go into pricing, like distribution being more expensive in the USA because of the vast distances, or supply and demand. I'm sure a larger percentage of Japanese people are into creating art than American buyers. All combined contributes to their better price for better quality.

I so agree with you! A few years ago I wanted to try watercolor, but I didn't know any better. So I just bought some cheap stuff from a local craft store and decided it wasn't for me. Later on, my boyfriend bought mw my first actual watercolors, the cotmans, and I loved it. I really realised that quality is important and the cotmans are actually quite affordably. It gave me the chance to upgrade and go for artist paints, but I will always baby my cotmans because they got me started!
Exactly this! I just hate for people to get scared away by bad quality products. Just buy a couple of tubes of decent paints, that's all you need! :(

Li's NailLife tbh w&n cotman is my first decent enough set of water colors and I am in love with it, thanks to that set of 12 i started seriously doing watercolor

In Germany we have the watercolor brand "Schmincke"
Hella expensive but so worth it. I got a whole box of those from my dad because he quit drawing. A real treaure.
And funnily enough the word "Schmincke" sounds like the German word for "Make up"

The freaking daiso watercolor pack literally is better than the artist grade watercolor that reeves sells.
thank u so much for expkaining the watercolor going over the line art and looking weird. I always thaught i did smth wrong or i was just not precise with applying the materials. For now i prefer using cheaper art supplies cause if i bought professional things id be super anxious wasting them

I honestly think this is one of my favorite videos of hers I'm love the paints, with them being a cheap alternative, and the results.
We have a Daiso here in Texas. It's basically a 200 yen store, which works out to 1.50 US. I have never once been disappointed in anything I bought there. And I buy a lot, lol. They don't have a huge selection of art supplies, but between the art and stationary supplies I have purchased quite a few of my favorite, regularly used supplies there. I really wish there was a Japanese version of Wish. I would buy all the things! 😁

Daiso also has great watercolor for a cheap price. My friend bought me a 8 set watercolor and its vibrant! Great for starters!
I live in south east asia, we have daiso too. But the only good thing that is cheaper there are the umbrellas and the pill boxes.
But the markers in minisou is really nice and cheap tho.

I picked up some black Muji gel pens this year and ended up using all the way through Inktober, they've definitely become some of my favourites.
*sigh* i want and actually can buy and try them. But muji gel pens are the kind of stuff that i would sell my soul to some evil lord if i could get the full pack of them. So I'm restraining myself from buying them.

If anyone is looking for cheap art supplies Michaels has some decent packs of paint brushes for $5. XL is a good and cheap brand when it comes to sketchpads(cheapest at walmart). There's also a student grade brand called reeves that has a lot of different types of paint. The quality is decent and a pack of paint tubes is only $8. Amazon tends to be fair when it comes to supply pricing and get the Michael's app, There's always decent coupons on there.
Definitely agree for Reeves and Artist Loft as starter brands but once you move into Prismacolor, Winser and Newton, etc. you DEFINITELY need to move to Amazon. Michaels ups their prices SO bad on the more expensive art supplies. Even with the 60% coupon it still won’t beat Amazon.
@@eyess_cosm Amazon is best for bulk buys of art supplies but for individual thing you should go to Dick Blick or Jerry's Artarama they have good prices for individual open stock things (Brushes, paint tubes,Markers Pens etc)

Personally I don’t like the pentel water brush pens. My one pentel brush I have was like $7 and my set of 6 from arteza were $12. I like them a ton better and I have more control with them than with the pentel ones

I used to hate watercolor because I thought it was messy and not good for paper. (I didn't have watercolor paper then though.) Then I stumbled into your vids and they motivated me to give watercolor a chance and I'm really happy I did! I'm still learning though but I'm off to a good start. Thank you Kasey ^^

Wow, those are very watery... watercolors. I’m used to seeing them come out of the tube really thick like toothpaste. They paint pretty good for a buck a piece, though! Too bad we don’t have a hundred yen store in America. Our dollar stores suuuuuuuck. Everything I buy here, even though it’s only a dollar, makes me feel ripped off.
Some were VERY thick, some were almost straight water. If you could see, the purple even came out blue at first. They're $1... so I can't complain. They probably just settled or something, haha.

Perhaps Japan law about toxicity isn't as strict as say, the US so that's maybe one of the reasons why they can sell better quality paints, ie toxic paints because cheap art supplies tend to be for kids, hence the lowest toxic possible and therefore, crap.
I'm not sure about that but I don't think that's true. Many Japanese love their stationary products and art supplies. It may be a supply and demand thing.
@@sakitrain7766 yeah sounds pretty accurate. Also video games are cheaper there and I'm thinking probably instax films are cheaper too. I know here in Australia some stuff costs a lot more but you also have to consider the average wage. I have no idea what the wage is in Japan.
