    i think the mountain eraser is a reference to the japanese proverb, "塵も積もれば山となる (chiri mo tsumoreba yama to naru)" which means "even dust if piled can become a mountain” which is really motivating, meaning each and every one of your small efforts count towards your end goal! :D

    As an art teacher the cat that connects to the bottle would be nice so the kids aren’t up every 5 mins emptying the full basin of shavings!

    • @sweeety969
      @sweeety969 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      That’s exactly what I thought. Even as a layperson it seems invaluable because instead of a small container that can only hold a few pencil shavings like the other sharpeners, you get to attach it to a bigger container and not have to worry about emptying it out all the time. I go through my coloured pencils or my nephew’s pencils periodically and give them a quick sharpen and usually have to either bring a trash bag with me or sit near a bin but with that I would just be able to pull it out and go.

    When you work with pencils and you’re doing a large art piece , especially prisma color pencils because they’re soft and dull quickly, you can easily and quickly fill that bottle. Also dull tips are great for soft or light shading. I will look for those sharpers next time I’m in japan. 👍🏾

      Yes, I use the T’GAAL sharpener for all my colored pencils. I like my Prismacolors sharp, but if the point is long they are more prone to breakage. The sharpeners are super popular with colorists here on TH-cam. I bought mine on Amazon.

    Important to note that what may appear to be a gimmick might be a tool useful for elders and those with disabilities. The ratcheting #3 sharpener would be so useful to those with limited rotational mobility in their wrists (arthritis, etc). The popcorn brush would allow people who, say, had a stroke and limited control of their hands, to paint again.

    • @skunkyraccoon7572
      @skunkyraccoon7572 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I was thinking the same thing for the eraser dust cleaners. I don't know how well they would work for someone with mobility issues, but I think that's the intent.

    • @petrescuework-difficultcas6581
      @petrescuework-difficultcas6581 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually I thought the same thing. The ratchet sharpener instantly appealed to me because of that reason. The usual twisting motion of sharpening pencils hurts my wrists and this looks way more doable.

    My grandparents had the k'zool sharpener in their house when I was a kid and took it to school in Japan every time I visited them cos I was just bewildered by it and the sharpness thing. Also the push button in the top is for when the pencil lead snaps and gets stuck in the sharpener so it pushes it out from the inside it's very cool

  • @ArtsyBeau
    @ArtsyBeau 4 ปีที่แล้ว +107

    I can imagine the pencil sharpener with the sharpness settings could come in handy for color pencil illustrations, where you rarely want the pencil to be super sharp unless you're doing fine details. The sharper it is and the softer the lead, the easier it breaks too.

    • @illegalmaknae550

    Reasoning why people would want a certain sharpness for their pencil: Whenever I'm drawing with a wooden pencil, if it's really really sharp, it makes it harder to draw. What I usually do is rub my pencil up against a paper to make it dull but one of those sharpeners would make the task less of a hassle

    • @Garouwerks

      Exactly. When you use graphite, and draw, you want differing points to your pencils for lines, shades, crosshatching, etc.

    • @MrGhostTheBigRoast
      @MrGhostTheBigRoast 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      i sharpen my pencils so that the graphite has four sides (so the horizontal cross section is a square) and a chiseled point at the end. you can use the edge of the tip for sharp straight lines, the corners for sharp details and the flat bit for shading. if the edges loose sharpness, i rub the flat bit on paper and its sharp again. obviously works best with thick pencils.

    • @illegalmaknae550
      @illegalmaknae550 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      some reasons why I like my pencil at different sharpness is because when I doodle in class I like my pencil to be medium-sharpish(but change it depending on what I'm going for in my drawing) because this is the easiest for me, then when I do my notes I want my pencil pretty dull because when I write I press down a lot and hold the pencil very tightly (I still manage to have good handwriting tho) and when I'm done with the class I have a sore hand and I always have a callus on the finger I push the pencil on, my writing is very dark and hard to erase because of this, lighter pencil would be better for my writing.

    The popcorn/squid looking paintbrush would be fantastic as adaptive tech for people who struggle to hold paint brushes. I could see a lot of people with disabilities and fine motor issues getting use out of it. I've painted hand over hand with some clients who can't grip a brush and I bet they'd love that.

      There are small foldable scissors too, they aren't stabby and usually are sold as keyring attachments. It's not a japanese product, just generic old timey international one, i think. I loved mine as a kid, because as someone who didn't have a swiss army knife until i was a teen they came in handy a lot for all sorts of things. I even used them for sharpening the graphite tip of pencils a few times - as in not the wood casing.

      I used to carry around a tiny Swiss army knife for lace tatting and crocheting on airplane reasons. Was bad at unfolding those folding sewing scissors (regularly stabbed myself by accident) and it passed airplane regulations. Lost it a couple years back b.c it fell out of my luggage, but the scissors on those 11 dollar Swiss army knives might be more useful than the mini scissors in this video. If those are no good, baby nail clippers are also good (I keep one packed in my travel tatting kit)

    The Tgal pencil sharpener is amazing. It’s really useful when the core of the pencil is different. If you have soft core pencils the the short setting is great as it can help with lead breakage, but if the core is hard then the longer setting is great for getting really sharp points. I’ve seen this sharpener recommended a few times so I got one and I think it is one of the best ones I have ever used, even alongside the manual and electric ones with a handle. And the fact that the price is so reasonable is such a bonus. Great video as always. Just love your channel. 💕💕

    For the cat sharpener thing, I can definitely see why it attaches to bottles. I use colored pencils a lot and having a small sharpener can be a bit annoying because having to sharpen so many pencils fills up small sharpeners really quickly and that means having to empty it every 10 minutes. Being able to have a whole bottle could definitely make it easier because you wouldn't have to empty it all the time ig

    For the people who are kinda baffled by the pencil sharpeners, it’s super useful for 硬筆 (kouhitsu), a way of practicing the Japanese written language. The best way to describe it would be a form of pencil calligraphy? The sharpness dictates how thick the lines and/or how much pressure you can use while writing. It used to be a common school class but not so much anymore.

    Oh I can totally see how the bottle gadget is actually useful! If you're drawing with colored pencils and you have to sharpen them alot you can just go on and just... never get up to empty your shaving jar. Especially if you don't have a separate art desk and have to draw on your couch instead. It's a pro lazy tool basically.

    Perhaps you’re supposed to trace the little man rather than using him as a reference? To avoid having to draw a human profile...? I dunno

    • @hellsingmongrel
      @hellsingmongrel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At the same time, unless you're standing un a very uncomfortable pose, or only standing extremely straight, it would give you a terrible profile. The hips and shoulders twist and bend in pretty much any pose you would be trying to draw from that, and it doesn't take that into consideration, so the thing just looks awkward.

    I think the hole in the blue mannequin's head may be to push a pin through, if you wanted it fixed on a wall or a desk, since the plastic is so thick.

      It would also be great for traveling or sketching somewhere that you don't want to plop a traditional one down but still want to see a pose, or just practicing different poses. And it folds up so small it would fit in my pocket sketch kit! I definitely want one. I also want one of those pencil sharpeners and the tiny scissors and the little tombow eraser from the eraser video. They'd all fit in one of my pocket kits and now I need to find them all. Well, I could probably make the template, but I still want it.

    On the subject of going out of one's way to avoid using hands to clean up eraser dust, my daughter is starting elementary school in Korea (and the school system has some degree of influence from Japan due to certain events of history) and she is expected to have 4 sharpened pencils (as sharpening is only allowed during breaks) and a mini dustpan and brush. I would imagine that keeping clean hands is seen as preferable for penmanship and brushes are less likely to smudge children's heavy pencil lines than fingers.. so there are good reasons and an educational precedent for those desk cleaners ♡
