I just accepted the role of Principal Engineer and as such I'll be the Product Owner for different projects. This video helped me better understand how the role works and interacts with other team members. Thank you.
Great analysis Diego! I am a product owner and often times these roles gets interchangeable used. I just shared a video on my channel talking about what a product owner really does. Already subscribed!
Gracias Diego! I'm about to take the SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) certification and this helped me clarify the differences between the two, after many other resources were NOT helpful.
My understanding is that a PO is just a software project manager, but the PM is also responsible for discovering and validating market opportunities and customer feedback
I am geeting POPm certification. I m into PM more than PO, but, l will have to get some PO experience before moving to PM.. l am now working as a BA and assisting my POs.
Thanks Diego! I am often asked about the difference between product owners and product managers. The visuals and straight forward approach is appreciated. Very helpful video.
You couldn't have explained it more clearly! Do you have any advice for someone with a master's degree in computer science and three years of experience as IT business analyst who wants to become a PM? Even getting to the first interview is not easy. Maybe an APM program would help?
@@PMDiegoGranados Thank you, it's been really helpful. It made me discover a new perspective. However, I'm not entirely convinced about the online networking. I don't think I'd like to be contacted by unknown people who want to know more about my job, but maybe some people don't mind. I'll try to put your advice into practice.
Thank you for the clear explanation. It really helps. In addtion to FAQ, can I work as a PM but not as a PO? I initiated a product in a corporation and worked as a PO running a scrum team. Since the size of the team has been growing, I had to recruite a PO so that I focus more on what CEO does. Since I'm in a corp. I can't use CEO or founder for my title. In this case, should I call myself a PM or a Product Lead? It would be awesome if you could also share the difference between Product Lead and Product Manager. Thank you!
Absolutely! You can be a PM without being a PO - you'll focus more on the vision, strategy and customer problems to solve. There's no perfect mix or balance, but the goal is to be more strategic in your role as PM. As far as Product Lead and Product Manager,... Titles across different companies change, but you can think of this as: Associate PM - PM at the bottom of the hierarchy PM - individual contributor Sr. PM - individual contributor Product Lead - Manager of Product Managers ........ And then there can be VPs of PM, CPO, etc. Let me know if this helps
@@PMDiegoGranados Hello Diego, thank you so much for this clarification. It definitely helps a lot! I'll apply this into my team structure and use this to communicate with my stakeholders. Again much appreciated for your advice!
I am so admired that I have seen your videos. I am preparing for PM interview and yes, you have created awesome content for PM interview. Can you suggest some courses for technical PM roles?
Thank you Vruttik! My suggestion for technical PM roles is to start by looking at the company/role you are applying to. For example, if you are applying to a Technical PM in cloud (e.g. Google Cloud, AWS, Azure), then knowing the fundamentals of Cloud, the tech stack, those kind of concepts will work. While there's no specific or unique set of questions for technical rounds, in my experience I've seen and heard from others that they are typically related to the role you are applying to. If you want to refresh your technical skills from the basics, Harvard has all its basic computer science course for free on their website!
Great video! I was looking for contents related to PM vs PO role and I am glad I found this explanation. This validated my understanding. Thanks a lot!
My official title is PO, but I have done everything in both PO and PM responsibilities shown in the video. My salary is more in line with a PM than a PO. What am I?

Product owner is a role, product manager is a job - after this it all just clicked. Thanks for much for this video!
In my opinion the best way is to have the PM be a product owner! Makes the job for success for easier!!

Question for you, is being a PO a bit chaotic? I just accepted the role of PO and I feel a bit overwhelmed -jusy started this week.

Thank you Diego! This is one of the clearest explanation of the differences and similarities of these roles!!

Thanks a lot brother Diego :) keep up your inspiring work going!
I read a PO reports to the PM is this valid?
Not necessarily, some organizations do have this reporting structure while in others the PO and the PM both report to a common director.
I’m still confused. The pm should be the po then? Both of these roles do the same things
PO is just a role within the Agile /Scrum , a PM is a job.
Awesome content.
Glad you think so!
which position makes the most money? and least stressful?
Somehow the audio was faint and the bg music not needed.
At the end of the day both of them are just titles on paper and believe me titles are always misleading in the IT industry
very confusing
Great video!
